Dear Members & Guests, What a great time to be at Rockledge Country Club! The course conditions and facility are in fantastic shape, and we are working to improve them even more. This summer we made important additions to our maintenance fleet by purchasing a toro sprayer, a bunker rake to replace our aging machine, a pull behind aerifier for large area aerification, a toro rough mower and a toro fairway mower. The wish list of equipment is still extensive, but we are chipping away at the list. I want to share my appreciation for the maintenance crew at RCC, as I feel their job is one that is the heart of who we are. With summer also comes maintenance projects that you see happening on the golf course. We will be closing the course again on Mondays for scheduled maintenance and aerification. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we continue to always improve and maintain our course. We are excited to enjoy some summer Friday nights in the Vue! Starting Friday, July 15th some creative chef dishes and specialty drinks will create a theme for the night. This month, try Chef Gilberto's flavorful dishes! We would love for you to help us spread the word, so grab your friends and come join us in VUE 18! Adding to the fun we are rolling out our new Summer Sunset Golf Series beginning July 15th and will have fun formats and contests for all who enter. More information on how to be crowned the Series Champion can be found in the Pro Shop. On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to thank all our patrons. GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE It sure seems like a hotter than normal summer so far, but I think I say that every year. This is the time for growth and rejuvenation of turf areas. The long days of sunshine, combined with the heat and moisture, provide a perfect environment for bermudagrass. Along with this comes a tremendous amount of mowing, of course. The greens will receive another small tine aerification on July 18th. This will be the second of three greens aerifications this summer. We are doing three, instead of two, because the holes are much smaller in an effort to impact playability to a lesser degree, and to encourage a quicker healing process for the zoysia grass greens. The newly renovated tees are making great progress. We did have to resprig #6 black tee because the first application of sprigs didn’t take due to some irrigation issues we experienced in the early stages after putting the grass down. We purchased more sprigs and planted them in late June. This tee will be behind the others and may open later as a result. We hope to have the remainder of the tees open sometime in August. We will begin fairway and tee aerifications in the very near future. Most of these processes will take place on Mondays, but we will also be doing some cultural practices during the week as the schedule permits. Remember, aerification is a very important practice that relieves compacted areas and has many positive benefits that will enhance the turfgrass and soil environment to provide good conditions throughout the year.

The Championship Season at Rockledge Country Club The overarching goal of the golf operations team is to provide members and their guests with enjoyable golf experiences as well as competitive events throughout the year. Starting in August we will be “kicking-off” our “Championship Season” here at Rockledge Country Club. Please see below the proposed tournament schedule for the remainder of the 2022/2023 season: August • Men’s Member/Member - August 19 – 21, 2022 – this new 45-hole event will begin on Friday afternoon with a Demo Day by select vendors followed by a 9-hole Alternate Shot Tournament. Play will continue with 18-holes on Saturday and Sunday, so grab a partner and sign your team up to compete in this new “Championship Season” Kick-Off Event. September • Interclub Matches – Dates TBD – Twelve members are invited to compete against teams from Baytree National Golf Links and Duran Golf Club. This 54-hole event is comprised of several different formats and the teams from Rockledge Country Club have won this even the last two years. October • Member Match Play Championship – Pool Matches (TBD) with Bracket Playoffs to Follow. The formatting will be very similar to the WGC Dell Match Play. The event will begin with “pool play”, comprised of 16 four player pools. Each player will play matches against the other three members of their pool. The winner of the pool will then be seated for the bracket playoff which will occur over two weekends. On the final day, when the two finalists are scheduled to compete, the other 62 participants will be invited to participate in a fun consolation tournament followed by a reception when the Match Play Champion will be presented the W.W. Brown Cup, which dates back to 1918.

The Championship Season at Rockledge Country Club
November • Beyel Ladies Invitational – November 4, 2022 – on behalf of the members of the club, we will reach out to other clubs in the Central Florida area and invite teams to participate. This event will include a team format as well as an individual competition. There will be fun contests and the 18-hole tournament will be followed by a reception and awards presentation. December • Platinum Coast Invitational – December 2-4, 2022 – The Platinum Coast is an amateur tournament which has invited players from all over Central Florida for 50+ years to compete on our historic golf course. Our own golf professional Ryan Rozic has won The Platinum Coast twice!
The Championship Season continues in 2023 and includes: The T-Bowl (January), Ladies Member/Member (February), Men’s Member/Guest (March), Men’s and Ladies Club Championship (April), and Ladies Member/Guest (May). We encourage and welcome participation from all members and hope that you enjoy the Championship Season here at Rockledge Country Club.

In my experience of giving chipping lessons, the most common mistake I see is how the player sets up to the shot. Many players tend to set up to a chip shot with a wide stance, their ball position in the middle of that stance, and their grip at the end of the club. However, chipping is not a small version of a full swing. To promote this little swing, it is important that we set up well to promote this small shot. Here are a few key differences between the ideal chipping set up and the typical full swing set up. First, it is important that we have a narrow stance (approximately 1 club head width apart). Next, we want to play the golf ball on the inside part of our back foot.

Then, we want to grip down on the club almost where the grip and the shaft meet. Lastly, we want to put our weight slightly forward. Take a look at Tiger’s setup in the photo attached. By setting up like this we are promoting the club to hit the ball first and then brushing the ground after. To make sure we are achieving solid contact, try a few practice swings next to the golf ball and pay attention to where the club is landing. If your club is landing before the ball, it is likely one of these keys is off.

Once you master this setup, be creative! If you have tons of green to work with, try a pitching wedge. If you need to hit a shorter shot with less roll, use your sand wedge. For more tips like these, come see us for a lesson!
