Dear Members & Guests, Hello everyone, and welcome to my August newsletter article. Each month, as I ponder on what to write, it forces me to be reflective on events of the recent past. Although it is summer, and activity is generally a little slower, we still have a lot of action going on here at the club! Our Junior Golf Camps are winding down and many aspiring young golfers successfully completed the camps. We appreciate all our young players and hope they continue down the path toward a lifetime of thrills this game can provide. Our golf staff worked very hard providing instruction and guidance to each of our campers. The recent addition of our Friday Series golf events has been popular! Come on out and join us every other Friday night for some great competition and wonderful food that features a different theme at each event. For more info, the pro shop can fill you in on everything you need to join in on the fun! This year we are really trying to bring back the Member-Member event. Please support this by signing up. We have tried to find a spot on the calendar in the spring for this, but the busy schedule hasn’t allowed for it. There has been a lot of interest so I'm hoping this will be a very popular event. This event will need at least 25 teams to get it ff the ground. Also, our group golf games, such as, the Saturday Shootout, the Elite Net Sunday Shootout and the Friday Net Shootout are growing. These games are a great way to enjoy some competitive golf and a perfect way to meet new players. All the info you need can once again be found in the pro shop. We are sad to report Ryan Rozic has left our employment. We are so grateful for the short time Ryan was our assistant professional, and we wish him great success in his future teaching endeavors. Finally, thank you to my managers and staff who work hard daily to bring our members and guests a great experience. Until next time, take care!

Here we are in August already! Wow, where has the time gone!? The dog days are upon us, and so is the threat for hurricanes. Let’s hope they all dodge us, or we dodge them! We have had a good summer and are recuperating from the busy season by trying to grow back all the weak areas. We still have a fairway aerification scheduled and hope to commence soon. Weeds have been addressed and many of the bald spots in the fairways that were weeds are now beginning to cover with turf. We will continue with good growing weather until the middle of October when nights begin to cool. The newly renovated tees are coming along. We hope to open them this month, but some will not make that timeline, as we had a few issues along the way. We are currently working on weed control. Lower rates of herbicides are used to protect the young turf from damage. This means the process takes more applications than on normal mature turf. I am confident the end result will be worth the wait. The greens aerification went very well this time around. We had great weather on aerification day that allowed for dry sand. This makes it easier to move the sand into the holes. Once again, the holes are fairly small, so getting sand in them is more difficult. We have one more greens aerification scheduled for this summer on September 19th. Finally, I am going to ask all of you once again to be cognizant of where you are driving your golf cart as you traverse the course. Your efforts to do the right thing and follow the cart driving rules that generally ask you to remain on paths around tees and greens, will go a long way towards keeping our turf healthy throughout the year. Club Fittings Aren’t Just for Pros When it comes to golfers and their equipment, one size does not fit all. Height, arm length, grip size, swing path, angle of attack, club head speed and more factor into what clubs a player should be using. But all golfers do have one thing in common: they can reap benefits from a club fitting. On Friday August 19th from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm Rockledge Country Club will be hosting the following companies for a demo/club-fitting day to allow you to experience first-hand some of the best new equipment on the market today.

For everyone from beginner to advanced player, a club fitting can certainly help the enjoyment of the game. Perfecting the swing is complicated enough—from the grip and takeaway to the downswing, contact and follow through—so the last thing you want are clubs that don’t fit. For people just starting out, if they want to get that ‘wow factor’ out of hitting a correct shot, seeing it up in the air, their chances will improve with properly fit clubs. And for experienced players, the game is hard enough without having to fight your equipment that may not be just right for you.

What Happens at a Golf Fitting? The fitting process begins with an interview for each golfer in which the fitter discovers what the golfer has been using and how it has been working for them. Contrary to some golfers’ misconceptions, golf professionals are in the business to help you play better golf, not to sell you new equipment. When you schedule a club fitting bring your current clubs to the fitting and do a little comparison. At a fitting you will want to ensure that you are optimizing your launch conditions when looking for a new driver – if you’re only able to gain a few yards, your current driver may be fine, but if you can pick up 10+ yards it may be something you want to consider. The numbers don’t lie! After the interview, the player starts loosening up a little bit by hitting balls on a launch monitor to identify shot patterns. Once the fitter becomes familiar with your shot patterns, they will likely begin asking you questions in terms of your golf game so that they can recommend equipment to help you get the most out of your game. It doesn’t take very long for a club fitter to see tendencies and patterns – they can likely find out what you need after just a few swings. Advanced players have been getting fit and reaping the benefits of properly fit clubs for years. All players should go through a club fitting before their poor-fitting clubs drive them from the game. For those of you who have limped along with your old set of clubs because you’ve hit a few great shots with them, technology is passing you by. The technology and advancements in club fittings has improved significantly in recent years. If your clubs are four or five years old, it may not be time just yet, but if it has been 10 or 15 years since you bought a driver or fairway woods or hybrids or even wedges, the tech is just getting better and better to where I’d like to think that with a change you could see some improvement immediately
