Sometimesit’seasytoforgetjusthowbrilliantBirminghamis.Familiarity breedscontempt,andallthat!Yes,ofcourse,thecityhasissues(theyalldo) andcouldalwaysbebetter(theyallcould),butreally,wearesoincredibly lucky.Thisthoughtwasuppermostinmymindafterspendinganeveningwithmywifeacoupleofweeks agoinBrindleyplace.
ThereasonforourvisitwastoloseourselvesforafewhoursinthemagicalmusicofJasonMrazat SymphonyHall.Theconcertwasgreatasweknewitwouldbe(we’vebeenhugefansoftheAmerican singerandsongwriterforyears),andthevenuewaspitchperfectwithawonderfulvibe.
Strollingaroundbeforeandaftertheshow,takinginsomelovelyfoodandatmosphere,wewerereminded justhowmuchwarmthandstyleourcityhastooffercomparedtothelikesofLondon,whichiscoldand oftenunwelcomingtovisitors.
AllofwhichmakesthosewhoknockBrumlookrathersadandfoolish.TakeRobertJenrick,theShadow SecretaryofStateforJusticeandShadowLordChancellor,whokickedoffarightspatafterdenouncingpartof Birminghamonarecentvisitfornothavingenoughwhitefacesandlikeningittoaslum.WhatashameMr Jenrickchoosestolookforthenegativesandnotpositives.Buthey,Iguessbeingcontroversialwithcomments basedonignorancegetsyouintheheadlinesandraisesyoursocialmediaclicks.So,that’salrightthen! KitHolderhasenjoyedasparklingcareerat BirminghamRoyalBallet(BRB)dancing someoftheworld’smosticonicrolesand now,aspartofthecompany’sartisticteam,he’s helpingtobringanewgenerationofdancersthrough theranks.ButwithoutSirPeterWright’sNutcracker, hemayneverhavefoundhisdancingfeet.Wecaught upwithKitaheadofthe35thyearofSirPeter’s productionofTheNutcracker–theballetthat changedhislife.

BlackSabbath:TheBalletisagreatexample.Kit wasatthepointofretiringwhentheideaofSabbath wasmooted.Hepausedhisretirementplanstosatisfy hiscuriosityabouttheshow.Hesaystheydidn’tfinish theshowuntiltheafternoonofopeningnight,soit wastouchandgo,butit’sbeenanabsolute phenomenon.“WhileTheNutcrackerisalotof peoplesfirstballet,soisSabbath.Metalfanstooka chanceonthisandtheaudiencesgowild.When you’reonyourninthshowoftheweek,thatenergy fromtheaudienceiswelcome.”
OvertimeKitbecamemoreinterestedinthe processofcreatingshowsandchoreography,soafter retiringasadancer,hewasthrilledtobepartof BRB’sartisticteamparticularlyworkingwithBRB2 whichshinesaspotlightonsomeofthebestyoung dancersfromaroundtheworldaged18to22.He says:“Igettoworkwithyoungdancersthathave graduatedfromthebestschools.Asacompanywe canattractthattalent.”TheoriginalcohortofBRB2 dancersMaïlèneKatoch,JackEastonFriedaKaden, OscarKempsey-FaggandMasonKingallcompleted thetwo-yearprogrammeandhavenowjoinedthe maincompanyasartists.

Somepeoplegothroughanidentitycrisis,butI’ve beenlucky.Myroleisreallyfulfilling.CoachingBRB2 andwatchingthemnailthechoreographyisbeautiful. Ihavenodesiretobetakingthecurtaincall,soIknow it’srightforme.”
