A N O T E F R O M SHERRY SHARP Hello Friends, Welcome to Alzheimer’s Day in RVA. “The days are long, the nights even longer.” This is how I felt while watching my husband deteriorate as he struggled with Alzheimer’s disease. At only 63, Richard was younger than the average victim. I say “victim” because Alzheimer’s seemingly creeps into the human brain out of nowhere, and relentlessly attacks. It affects over 5.5 million people in the U.S. Behind every number is a person, but also a family, and caregivers. The statistics are easy; telling the stories in the numbers is much harder. However, I would like to share some of ours. Richard was my high school sweetheart, husband, father of our two daughters and grandfather of our grandchildren; he was also the smartest person I have ever known! He made the world around him a better place. He loved his family, his work and his local community. When Alzheimer’s raised its ugly head, he was forced to abandon everything he had worked to accomplish. Having access to some of the brightest doctors and finest institutions working on Alzheimer’s research, we learned that in the 21st century, little is understood about the human brain. As harsh as it sounds, less than 10 years ago the only advice given to someone diagnosed was to “go home and wait to die.” How is it that people who have made such a positive impact on the world are expected to silently disappear? Richard continued to live his remaining years in the same manner as he lived his life; trying to fix what is broken, and facing each day with courage. On June 24, 2014, with his family by his side, his battle ended. All things surrounding Alzheimer’s makes me wish never to have to think about it again. But because so many of us are at risk, I have to. Thank you for joining me in this fight. With gratitude,

M E E T O U R H A R P I S T MCKAY MAGNESS McKay began working on Alzheimer’s related causes at age 11 in honor of her grandfather, who has lived with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis since 2008. She published a memory book, “Little Moments, Precious Memories” last year as a way for kids to capture and preserve precious memories with parents and grandparents. All proceeds from the sale of the book benefit Alzheimer’s causes. Currently an eighth grader at St. Catherine’s School, she has been playing harp since age 8. As a member of the GreenSpring International Academy of Music’s American Youth Harp Ensemble, McKay toured the U.K. in 2017 and the East Coast of the United States in 2018. She also shares her love for the harp with memory care patients as a volunteer performer at Bickford in Chesterfield. McKay currently holds the title of Miss State Fair of Virginia’s Outstanding Teen, an affiliate of the Miss America organization, which gives her an opportunity to share both her music and her platform of Alzheimer’s awareness at events across the Commonwealth. McKay is delighted to support the Rick Sharp Alzheimer’s Foundation.

The Cure Alzheimer’s Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to funding research with the highest probability of preventing, slowing or reversing Alzheimer’s disease. Many of the dollars raised by the Rick Sharp Alzheimer’s Foundation have gone to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund. The organization’s unwavering focus on finding a cure is made possible by their Board of Directors, which finances all of their overhead expenses so that 100% of all donations go to research.
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine: Since its founding in 1876, Johns Hopkins University has become one of the premier medical research facilities in the world. Their Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center keeps as its mission the acceleration of new treatments for the mechanisms of the disease, and the quest for an ultimate cure.
