In this exhibition, Philippe Pastor (b. 1961) debuts paintings from his new series North Pole: expressive, abstract canvases inspired by the crisis of melting ice across the globe. Characterised by predominantly monochrome and complex textural surfaces, the works confront the fragility of the planet’s polar and glacial regions, conveying an urgent warning of the catastrophe that is unfolding.
The North Pole paintings are shown alongside examples from earlier series, tracing a journey through the artist’s research over the last decade. The exhibition is articulated across two spaces – in the more traditional gallery setting on Via della Spiga, and at an expansive venue in via Gargano, where the artist’s large-format canvases offer a monumental climax to the cycle
Each work presents a topography of paint and pigment, a material landscape achieved by the artist through a balance of precise and expressive manipulation of his mediums The creation is a multi-layered process, with the final patina enacted through exposure to the elements; at the end, Pastor leaves the canvases outside his studio in northern Spain, often for months at a time, allowing sun, wind and rain to intercede.
Collectively, the paintings of Philippe Pastor impart a powerful message of the vulnerability of Earth’s climates and the immanent danger this poses to us all
