Here are some of the ways you could help: General Committee, Sub Committees, Property Maintenance, Boat Maintenance, Safety Boat Drivers, Photographers, Race Management Volunteers, Chaperones for youth events and more. We rely on our committed volunteers to make our days on the water successful. It takes approximately 10 volunteers each time we go racing. We run a series of training programmes for our volunteers including mark laying, first aid and boat driving – all of these also make excellent professional development for young sailors. The more our members get involved, the stronger our community becomes!

To ensure the ongoing support and success of our programmes we welcome donations. Some of our most passionate members have chosen to leave a legacy to their club by making a bequest. As a non-profit sports club and community, we are reliant on funding from trusts and donors to grow and develop our programmes and support young sailors in our sport. The three main areas that we seek donations for are: 1.The International Sailing Fund to support our members representing RNZYS to achieve success on the international stage. 2.The Youth Training Programme to have a long-term fund in place that ensures the programme and required equipment are well resourced and remain viable well into the future. 3.The RNZYS Foundation to support major projects, purchases and upgrades to secure our tenure.

COMMODORE’S Message

Dear Members, Welcome to the 155th season of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron – a busy one, with plenty refreshed for members to enjoy. Our nine-race PIC Wednesday Series starts 7 October, and the ever-popular Friday evening Sundowner Rum Race Series returns from 2 October, both running through summer alongside December's Christmas Race. New this year, the City of Sails Sprint Series launches 29 September, RNZYS is pleased to work alongside our neighbour's Northcote Birkenhead Yacht Club and Ponsonby Cruising Club to bring five Auckland keelboat fleets together for Tuesday and Thursday evening one-design fleet racing. Our Commodore's Cup Series gains an extra race with the Roy McDell Memorial Race on 3 October, and Squadron Weekend – now 12–13 February – features the Night Race to Kawau and Round Kawau Race, plus a cruise-and-rally option. We're also hosting the 2026 Pied Piper National Championships (6–8 November) and welcoming back the Squadron Picnic in early February. This season carries something extra: The Ocean Race returns to Auckland from late February to early March, with the inshore race on 7 March – our first stopover since 2018. This is a wonderful chance to be part of a world-class event, and to cheer on our own Squadron-flagged entry, skippered by Conrad Colman. Looking further ahead, the 38th America's Cup begins with the Louis Vuitton Cup in Naples in May 2027, ahead of the match itself starting 10 July 2027. Stay up to date with everything going on, by checking our website and weekly Mainsheet email, plus our social media feeds on Instagram and Facebook.

Enter a race, join a rally, or simply come down to Westhaven and watch from the Members' Bar. We look forward to seeing you on the water and around the Squadron, to enjoy an exciting season ahead.

David Blakey • Commodore

COMMODORE’S MESSAGE

If you have been considering entering but are unsure where to begin, reach out to the Sailing Office or fellow members — we would love to see you involved. If you’re not yet a member, take a look at our membership options online. And if you are already a member, we encourage you to invite friends and crew to join our Squadron community.

CLUB HISTORY Auckland’s hills and shores embrace the sparkling Waitematā Harbour, making the city a natural home for boating of every kind. A regatta marked Auckland’s founding in 1840 - an appropriate beginning for a city in which sailing would flourish and eventually earn an international reputation. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron traces its origins to the Auckland Yacht Club, established in 1871 with 30 yachts and 120 members. By the turn of the century, yacht racing was a thriving spectator sport, attracting large crowds, keen punters and detailed newspaper coverage of intense sporting rivalries. Competition between the Logan and Bailey boatbuilding families helped produce an outstanding fleet of racing yachts, many of which joined the club. In 1901, the Auckland Yacht Club became the New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The following year it received a royal warrant from King Edward VII, becoming a Royal club. Membership nearly doubled as a result, rising from 157 in 1901 to 300 in 1903. Yacht racing was largely suspended during both World Wars. Squadron members served in every theatre and across all branches of the armed services, while those remaining in Auckland contributed to harbour defence and patrol duties. As membership grew, the RNZYS occupied a succession of rented premises before purchasing a handsome two-storey brick house in Parliament Street in 1955. With sweeping views across the Waitematā Harbour, it served as the Squadron’s first permanent home. A decade later, the club leased the former Trillo’s cabaret and dancehall at Westhaven. Establishing a foothold there was a strategic move, as Westhaven had been selected for development as a major city marina. The Squadron retained its Parliament Street property for almost another decade before moving permanently to Westhaven in 1975. From the 1960s, RNZYS sailors emerged at the forefront of international competition. In 1966, James Davern sailed Fidelis across the Tasman and claimed line honours in the gruelling 630-mile Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The yacht established a new race record, while its 17-hour winning margin remained the largest in the event’s history for many years. Three years later, Chris Bouzaid and an RNZYS crew aboard Rainbow II won the prestigious One Ton Cup at Heligoland, Germany, defeating experienced competitors from across Europe and the United States. These achievements laid the foundations for further international success. The Squadron’s trophy cabinets have since held many of sailing’s greatest prizes, including the Half, One and Two Ton Cups, the Admiral’s Cup, Kenwood Cup, Champagne Mumm World Cup, Whitbread Round the World Trophy, Louis Vuitton Cup and America’s Cup. Carrying the RNZYS burgee, Team New Zealand won the America’s Cup in San Diego in 1995 and successfully defended it on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf in 2000. Both contests were settled by decisive 5–0 victories. After losing the Cup to Switzerland in 2003, Emirates Team New Zealand won the Louis Vuitton challenger series in Valencia in 2007 and San Francisco in 2013 but fell short in the subsequent America’s Cup matches. The team reclaimed the trophy in Bermuda in 2017, defeating Oracle Team USA 7–1 and returning the America’s Cup to Auckland. Coinciding with the Squadron’s 150th anniversary in 2021, Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the 36th America’s Cup on the Waitematā Harbour, defeating Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli 7–3. A third consecutive victory followed in Barcelona in 2024, where the team defeated INEOS Britannia 7–2 and confirmed the RNZYS once again as the home of the America’s Cup. The Squadron also reached an important milestone in 2024 when Gillian Williams became its first female Commodore, breaking new ground in the club’s 153-year history. The 38th America’s Cup will be held in Naples, Italy, in 2027. Its Protocol was signed in the Squadron’s Cornes Library on 12 August 2025 by Commodore David Blakey, Grant Dalton, Royal Yacht Squadron representative Bertie Bicket and Sir Ben Ainslie. The agreement introduced some of the most significant changes in the competition’s 174-year history. In 2026, the Squadron’s long relationship with Kawau Island entered a new chapter with the sale of its Smelting House Bay property, including historic Lidgard House, to Ngāti Manuhiri, the island’s mana whenua. RNZYS had owned the property since 1989. The sale preserves an ongoing connection with Kawau, with the Squadron retaining access to the beachfront, jetty, pontoon and lawn for key events for the next 20 years, as well as its four local moorings for members’ use.

Since 1987, the Emirates Team New Zealand Youth Training Programme (YTP) has developed more than 1,000 young sailors, building generations of skilled, confident and highly competitive athletes. Graduates of the programme have gone on to compete and succeed at the highest levels of the sport, including the America’s Cup, The Ocean Race, SailGP, international match racing, offshore racing and national and world championships, as well as becoming leading sailors within New Zealand’s club racing community. Open to sailors aged 16–23, the YTP provides an intensive keelboat training environment designed to develop well-rounded sailors both on and off the water. Training covers racing rules, tactics, sail trim, boat handling, communication, teamwork, fitness and boat maintenance, with a strong focus on developing the skills, confidence and decision-making required to perform as part of a competitive team. The programme is delivered using the Squadron’s fleet of Emirates Team New Zealand Elliott 7s, with regular training throughout the season. Sailors are also encouraged to compete in RNZYS club racing, providing opportunities to broaden their experience across a range of keelboats and racing formats. Throughout the year, sailors have opportunities to compete in match racing, fleet racing and keelboat events, with teams selected to represent RNZYS at regattas throughout New Zealand and internationally.

NATIONAL YOUTH TRAINING WEEK This year, National Youth Training Week is coming home to the Squadron for the summer school holidays. While the Members’ Bar and Events take a break over early January, youth sailors will take over the Club, camping out in the Ballroom and spending their days training and racing on the Waitematā Harbour. Established in 1989 and historically held at Kawau Island, National Youth Training Week brings together young sailors from yacht clubs across New Zealand for an intensive week of keelboat racing, training and development. The move to the Squadron marks a new chapter for this long-standing event, while continuing the tradition of bringing the country’s next generation of sailors together on and off the water. Each year, clubs are invited to send a four-person youth crew to take part in a combination of practical on-water training and theory sessions covering boat handling, teamwork, communication, racing rules, tactics and the fundamentals of competitive keelboat racing. Sailing aboard the Squadron’s fleet of Emirates Team New Zealand Elliott 7s, the week gives young sailors the opportunity to experience the training environment at RNZYS, develop their skills and meet other aspiring sailors from around the country. National Youth Training Week is the perfect stepping stone into the Emirates Team New Zealand Youth Training Programme, giving sailors a taste of the training, teamwork and competitive keelboat racing that form the foundation of the YTP. Based at RNZYS in Auckland, accommodation, meals, training and activities are provided, allowing sailors to fully immerse themselves in the experience. It’s a week of sailing, learning, competition and fun — and for many sailors, the first step towards joining the Youth Training Programme.

Inherent in the sport of sailing is the risk of permanent, catastrophic injury or death by drowning, trauma, hypothermia or other causes. 20.2 All those taking part in RNZYS races or any other sailing events controlled by the RNZYS, as between the RNZYS and each of those so taking part, do so at their own risk and responsibility. The RNZYS and any sponsor associated with this event has no liability for any damage, loss or any penalty suffered by any boat crew or any other person taking part in such events. The RNZYS and any sponsor associated with this event shall not be responsible for the seaworthiness of a boat whose entry is accepted and/or the sufficiency and/or adequacy of its equipment or the competence of its skipper or crew. The RNZYS reserves the right in its sole and uncontrolled discretion to refuse entry. 21. INSURANCE 21.1 Each participating boat shall be insured with valid marine third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of $5,000,000 per incident or the equivalent. 22. FURTHER INFORMATION
