Welcome to the RNCM
Welcome to the RNCM’s latest Autumn season! Our new programme is a celebration of the joy that comes from creativity and from experiencing music and music-making together – from playing and performing it, to listening to and engaging with it. As musicians and as audience members, we are offered the unique experience of jointly appreciating the collective endeavour and expression of a piece of work, and those moments of human connection will be central to our events over the 2026/27 season. The RNCM has thrived as an institution for more than 50 years because of its unique relationship with the city: as an educator, a public performance venue, and a hub for creativity and community. Our editorials this month highlight just some of the ways we continue to do that – starting with an interview with Co-Artistic Director of Manchester Collective, Rakhi Singh, who tells us about the ensemble’s new production, Constellations (coming to us in October), and about the impact of our ongoing professional pathway, RNCM x Manchester Collective Studio (pages 4-5). We shine a light on our free Spotlights concerts – a recurring series in which student musicians are encouraged to take risks with new work that challenges their own artistic ambitions (often through crossdiscipline collaboration) and to offer audiences a fresh perspective on the ways young musicians are engaging with classical traditions (pages 6-7). We also take a Deep Dive into our Inspirational Artists strand, which in its third year is becoming a great asset to the cultural landscape of Manchester – bringing renowned international artists, some for the first time, to work with the next generation of musicians and play for new audiences (pages 20-21). We hope you enjoy all this season has to offer, and we look forward to seeing you at the RNCM.

RNCM x Manchester Collective
Manchester Collective continues as Artist-in-Residence at the RNCM in 2026/27, bringing world-class productions to our venues and working with our students to support diverse futures in music through the RNCM x Manchester Collective Studio – a hub for creativity and experimentation. The Collective begins the season with Constellations, drawing on the music of West African and western European cultures (Fri 9 Oct). And, as well as a second original production in 2027, the ensemble will also perform side-by-side with the RNCM musicians taking part in the new Studio partnership. Rakhi Singh, Co-Artistic Director and CoFounder of Manchester Collective, tells us more: ‘For me, music-making is about creating a space to transport the audience through a communal and individual experience.

‘This year, we are deepening our relationship with master djembe player Sidiki Dembélé and his ensemble in Constellations. This project is a deep dive into music from two different cultures, West African and western European, portraying universal human stories and bridging the gap between cultures with fluidity, sensitivity, and joy. A premiere by Nwando Ebizie continues this living tradition as she creates a contemporary reaction to both lineages. ‘Throughout the year, I’m also working with the students of the RNCM x Manchester Collective Studio on mastery of craft and how to be an artist, as opposed to an instrumentalist. Firstly, asking what we want to say, and then exploring how we do that through the medium of music both through performance and curation.’

The RNCM has always been an engine room for experimentation and crossdiscipline collaboration, and it’s a tradition our Spotlights series continues – enabling student musicians (soloists and ensembles) to bring new, often risky ideas to audiences through free to attend, early-evening, walkin concerts. Student-devised and usually scheduled ahead of major performances in our Concert Hall and Theatre, Spotlights take over our less formal spaces (Carole Nash Recital Room, The Lounge, RNCM Café) and give musicians complete freedom to step outside their teaching and traditions. Here, they can collaborate and experiment in a fail-safe environment that supports their ambitions, creativity, and artistry away from assessed and commercial considerations. There are 11 very different Spotlights in our Autumn season alone boasting a great variety of repertoire and originality. Composer and current student Kámea Nemeth says their Spotlights experience was ‘one of the most valuable projects I have been involved in in my time at the Royal Northern College of Music’, adding: ‘There is no other project that lets you explore beyond your individual studies to the extent of this one, and being involved in Spotlights concerts has given me a platform to build on personal ventures that I might not have otherwise. ‘These concerts feel quite special to me, and they keep the RNCM's live music experience fresh and exciting.’

Returning in 2026/27, our Inspirational Artists series celebrates the musicians utilising their skill, experience, and training to reshape expectations about classical music, and to offer the next generation of musicians insights into where their own practice could take them.

Our Autumn season features six performances in the Inspirational Artists series, starting with Manchester Collective and Sidiki Dembélé (Fri 9 Oct, see pages 4-5 for more) and continuing in October with two Manchester debuts: the trailblazing Chiaroscuro Quartet (Mon 12 Oct) performs music from the classical and early Romantic periods on gut strings and with historical bows, and then pianist Tiffany Poon brings her acclaimed ‘beautiful sound, sensitivity and expressive nuance’ to the RNCM in celebration of her new album, Nature (Wed 28 Oct). In November, saxophonist Emma Rawicz and pianist Gwilym Simcock collaborate as part of RNCM Saxophone Day; one of the most respected names in British opera, renowned dramatic soprano Susan Bullock CBE, is joined by sought after collaborative pianist Jonathan Fisher for an exploration of operatic art song (Thu 19 Nov); and Charles Hazlewood's extraordinary collective of disabled and non-disabled musicians, Paraorchestra, returns to the RNCM for a performance of Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians (Fri 27 Nov).
