NORTHERN COLORADO IS HOME to a large and diverse cycling community—but not everyone has felt reflected in traditional bike spaces. That’s the gap Joyride aims to fill: a community-first bike repair shop, café, and gathering space built for connection, accessibility, and belonging.
The idea didn’t appear overnight. It’s rooted in years of grassroots community-building. Queer+ Bikes has become a staple across Fort Collins, hosting monthly rides, socials, off-bike events, and even a free gear closet—nearly 40 events in the past year alone. Meanwhile, RebeExplores has grown from online storytelling into real-world gatherings that center women and connection, making outdoor adventure more approachable.
Through this work, a clear need emerged: approachable bike repair, accessible education, and a welcoming, low-pressure environment— especially one that isn’t centered around alcohol. Joyride is the physical home for that vision. Women-, trans-, and queer-owned, and intentionally sober, the space is designed to feel different from the moment you walk in.
“Joyride was created by and for people who love cycling but haven’t always felt at home in traditional bike spaces,” say co-founders B Steele, Lauren Mehl, and Rebe Dunn. “Our goal is simple: to make cycling feel welcoming, possible, and fun—and to build real community around it.”
Event Profile:
FOCO FONDO
THE FOCO FONDO HAS QUIETLY BECOME one of the most respected grassroots rides in the country—selling out year after year and drawing everyone from competitive racers to firsttime riders. As longtime announcer Dave Towle often noted, “it’s more than a race.” True to its name—fondo, or “a big ride”— the event blends competition with community, where roughly 100 riders race while nearly 1,900 others simply aim to finish.
But what does it take to bring something like this to life? According to Whitney Allison, planning never really stops. “It’s a year-round endeavor,” she says, with the next event taking shape almost immediately after the last rider crosses the finish line. From there, momentum builds toward a January 1 registration launch and peaks again in July.
Volunteers are essential to that effort. The event’s unique program offers riders a chance to earn entry by working a
shift—supporting more than 80 participants annually and reinforcing the event’s accessibility.
That community-first spirit is at the heart of the Friends of FoCo Fondo Enduro stage race preview. Built in Fort Collins and anchored at New Belgium Brewery, the event reflects a collaboration between local businesses, nonprofits, and riders themselves—creating a weekend that feels less like an event and more like a shared celebration on two wheels.

Maker/Builder Profile:
IN A SMALL BUT STEADILY HUMMING corner of the custom bike world, Sean Burns is quietly building something remarkable. As the designer and fabricator behind Oddity Cycles, Burns has carved out a niche creating one-of-a-kind bicycles that blend precision engineering with artistic expression.
When he first started, there was no backup plan—only the certainty that it had to work. At the time, Burns was working as a project architect, hired in part for his ability to bring an artistic lens to technical design. He built bikes on the side, learning the craft through a mix of formal training and self-teaching, eventually refining his skills with guidance from mentor James Blakely.
Interestingly, Burns initially tried to keep himself out of the spotlight, even going by “Burnsey” to ensure the work stood on its own. It did—and today, demand often
KNOWN TO MOST EVERYONE BUT HIMSELF as “the voice of American cycling,” Dave Towle has spent decades bringing the sport to life—from announcing major races to shaping how fans experience cycling in the U.S. A Colorado native and self-described “Boulder kid,” Towle’s lifelong passion for the sport has evolved into a new platform: hosting The American Cycling Report.
Launched just six months ago, the independent podcast now features more than 35 episodes, with new releases twice a month. While much of cycling media focuses on European racing, Towle’s goal is to spotlight American athletes, events, and the broader cycling community. “You can be involved in cycling in a million different ways,” he says, pointing to everything from professional road racing to local events and grassroots organizers.
The podcast fills a noticeable gap. “One of the biggest problems in cycling media is simply the lack of existing,” Towle explains. Through long-form interviews, he dives deeper than race results—exploring the human side of the sport. Listeners hear what drives athletes and organizers, what sparked their passion, and what keeps them going.
For Towle, it’s simple: highlight what’s positive, what’s fun, and the people who make American cycling worth following.
outpaces what he can produce.
Each Oddity bike is a fully custom build, designed from the ground up. No templates, no repeats—just a continuous cycle of problem-solving and creativity. For Burns, every new commission is both a challenge and an opportunity: to translate a rider’s personality, style, and ambition into a machine that is as expressive as it is functional.

NEW TRAILS TO EXPLORE
KATIE HARRIS
MOUNTAIN BIKERS HAVE EVEN
more reasons to hit the dirt this season, thanks to two newly opened trail sections in Northern Colorado. Here’s what to know about these local additions, along with a few tips for riding safely.
BAY-TO-BAY TRAIL, HORSETOOTH RESERVOIR
Horsetooth Reservoir’s newest trail section opened last May. Connecting the peninsula at the southern part of Inlet Bay to the South Bay swim beach, the trail is accessible via the Blue Sky Trailhead or South Bay swim beach parking lots. Entry requires a $10 entrance fee, purchasable through a QR code posted in the parking areas, or Larimer County annual pass.
At two feet wide, and with steep, rocky terrain, the moderate-rated, sand-based trail is open to hikers and bikers but not horseback riders. The trail connects to Blue Sky Trail as well as Horsetooth Mountain Trail, extending the existing trail system with 1.8 miles of single track.
“Bay to Bay Trail provides an alternative route for any user to jump off the highway and get on a trail along that section, which has been a big positive,” says Larimer County Trails Supervisor Joel Schwab.
Schwab says the trail is highly frequented due to its proximity to two popular areas and reservoir views, and reminds bikers to communicate and yield when passing hikers, who may need extra time to step aside due to steep drop-offs along the trail.
Find more information at larimer.gov and visit trails. colorado.gov for trail conditions.
ELK MEADOW TRAIL, BOBCAT RIDGE NATURAL AREA
Last fall saw the completion of City of Fort Collins’ newest multi-use trail. The easy- to moderate-rated trail consists of 1.7 miles of natural surface footing, winding through the Bobcat Ridge valley, over seasonal stream drainages and among rock formations. Visitors can take in the views of red rock cliffs and foothills as they bike along the trail.
Accessible off the Valley Loop Trail, Elk Meadow Trail is wide enough to be utilized by adaptive bicycles as well as mountain bikers, hikers and horseback riders. The trail is multi-directional, and bikers are required to yield to hikers and horses. Riders traveling downhill should yield to those riding uphill.
Bobcat Ridge Natural Area is free to access, though parking is
TRAIL TIPS
YIELDING TO APPROACHING TRAFFIC: Stop and move aside for advancing hikers and horses. Downhill riders move aside for uphill riders.
PASSING: Alert others on the trail when approaching, announcing the number in your group, and pass on the left when safe to do so.
SCAN THE TRAIL: Keep your eyes ahead, not down.
PRACTICE PRESERVATION: Stick to the trail and don’t ride when wet or muddy.
BRING THE ESSENTIALS: water, spare tube, pump and multi-tool.
RIDE SAFELY: Always wear a helmet.
PROPER FORM: Keep your weight centered, bend elbows and knees, anticipate hazards and always keep one finger on the brake lever, prepare for hills by downshifting early.
limited and often fills on peak season weekends. Dogs are prohibited in the area, except for service dogs. To learn more visit cityoffortcollins. gov and visit trails.colorado.gov for current trail conditions.

CALL OF THE OPEN ROAD
MULTI-DAY BIKE ADVENTURES
DAN ENGLAND
SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS backpacking routes in the world, such as the Appalachian Trail, offer more than many days of hiking. They offer an adventure.
But backpacking isn’t the only way to spend weeks worrying about nothing but getting from one end of the country to the other.
Some even call it “bikepacking.”
Many of the bike routes pass through Colorado and neighboring states and offer the opportunity for shorter itineraries nearby.
THE MICKELSON TRAIL
This trail shows the beauty of converting an old railroad line into a path that people run, traverse by horseback, backpack and, of course, bike.
You’ll have to cover 109 miles without much cell-phone coverage and 15 trailheads to stash supplies. The trail features more than 100
converted railroad bridges, four rock tunnels and 14 trailheads. Many take a few days to do it, but some have biked it in a day.
The trail, from Edgemont to the gambling town of Deadwood, was South Dakota’s first rails-to-trails project. It follows the line constructed by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1890-91 and last used by Burlington Northern Railroad in 1986. The entire trail was completed in 1998.
The scenic trail is mountainous and forested and generally snow-covered even in late spring so it’s good to check conditions before you head on out.
Bicycle guiding companies offer tours of the trail, and many of them last six days.
The gravel trail is generally gentle or moderate, but there are some challenging climbs.
For some good tips and a forum, go to https://bikemickelson.com.
GREAT DIVIDE MOUNTAIN BIKE ROUTE
This one cannot be done in a day, or even a month. Just ask Rick Arneson of Fort Collins.
This route is nearly 3,100 miles long and follows the Continental Divide as much as possible, crossing it more than 30 times. It took Arneson 62 days, with five days off, to cover it.
The two-month trip took an average of 50 miles a day to cover, no small feat on unpaved roads. In fact, about 90 percent is on unpaved trails and roads.
Arneson departed from Canmore AB, Canada in late July 2023 with a riding partner and finished at the Mexico border crossing of Antelope Wells, New Mexico, on Oct. 1.
“The route is simply dog-gone,
stunningly beautiful traversing the Rocky Mountains,” Arneson says.
Arneson, 67, trained by riding 120 miles per week for about a year, mixing in some hiking and skiing.
“I had a great desire to immerse myself into the route’s remote physical, mechanical and mental challenges of the self-supported ride,” he says.
The route did indeed challenge him, with an estimated 200,000 feet of climbing, but perhaps the mental challenge was the hardest part as he was beaten down by bad weather.
“I was disturbed by a deep sense of vulnerability, finding myself wet, cold and isolated in remote New Mexico unable to ride in mud,” Arneson says. “Three days later
we abandoned the route, riding 28 miles of washed-out roads to a highway, then 30 some miles to a tiny restaurant that offered us shelter, a shower and prepared food. The prolonged borderline hypothermia haunts me still.”
GOLDEN GRAVEL TRAIL
The trail was created just this year as a digital route to celebrate the Adventure Cycling Association’s 50th anniversary. It spans eight states, from Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.
The route features an incredible disparity in terrain, from the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains, over its 3,800 miles. It is primarily off-road and the longest route published by the association since 1984.
“This mixed-surface adventure combines the technical challenge of primarily off-road riding with the soul-stirring diversity of America’s most iconic terrain. Built through meticulous research and local partnerships, the Golden Gravel Trail is the ultimate celebration of adventure, endurance, and the transformative power of bicycle travel,” the website states.
TRANSAMERICA ROUTE
Kevin Black was no stranger to long routes before he and his wife, Kristi, decided to bike the TransAmerica
route, the premiere route to bike from the East Coast to the West.
He hiked the 2,660 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada prior to tackling the route.
He got a grant from Warrior Expeditions to hike that route, and both received another to bike the TransAmerica. The organization sponsors combat veterans by providing them with gear and a monthly stipend to complete a long-distance journey. Both are retired U.S. Marines.
Adventure Cycling put together the route in 1976, which not only had the route on its maps but places you could stay for free. The Blacks took full advantage of these places, some of which just asked for a little donation in return.
“We stayed in fire stations, churches, hostels,” Kevin says. “Even a converted jail.”
The route is nearly all blacktop on secondary routes through “small-town U.S.A.,” Kevin says.
“It’s a way nearly everyone misses because they’re on the Interstate,” Kevin says.
The two purchased camping equipment, including a tent, and used it about half the time.
Kevin says the most difficult part of the ride was the Appalachian Mountains, which surprised him—he thought the Rockies would be tougher.
“Apparently, they don’t believe in switchbacks,” Kevin says. “We would spend 45 minutes in first gear standing on the bike to get to the top of a mountain, and then five minutes down the other side.”
The 4,400-mile journey took them three months from Williamsburg, Va., to Astoria, Ore.
“There wasn’t one moment that we wondered what we were doing on the ride,” Kevin says. “We absolutely loved it.”
