WELCOME TO OUR STORY

STUDIO CONCEPT

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to acknowledge the Yallakit Willem people of the Boon Wurrung Country where I live and study. I respectfully acknowledge their Elders, past and present along with all other First Nations people here today. This semester I have been working closely with Uncle Leonard Clarke and the Kirrae Whurrong community. I would like to thank and pay my respects to Uncle Lenny and his community and family for their generosity in sharing their knowledge and culture with us, in particular to Yarning circle, bonfire, Brett Clarke, Aunty Pat, Kirrae and Lurpeen.

SEMESTER 1 2021

ON COUNTRY: FRAMLINHAM 3.0

UNCLE LEONRD CLARKE

The overall concept of this studio was to design a international standard music and performance centre along with a cultural/life education centre at framlingham. This is a response to an invitation we received from a highly respected Aboriginal elder, uncle Leonard Clarke, to conceptualise a vision he has for his family’s aboriginal owned land on Kirrae Whurrong land in the western district of Victoria. This vision is to create a world class cultural arts and music centre that not only celebrates and showcases aboriginal culture to a broad and international audience, but to also foster and provide opportunities for youth through cultural and life education programmes as an alternate to incarceration. This new centre will be called the shara clarke music centre, named after and in honor of uncle Lenny s late daughter.

SHARA CLARKE CENTRE

SITE PLAN

SHARA CLARKE CENTRE The SHARA CLARKE CENTRE consists of three parts, the front house complex area (exhibition/restaurant/retail outlet/welcome space), ARCHIE ROACH and REGINAL SAUNDERS performance space and BANJO CLARKE cultural and education center. The three parts are inspired by site landscape, bonfire and tent. In the end, the building will reflect the idea of aboriginal culture yarning circle through the splicing and fusion of the three parts, thereby creating an activity center to encourage people to listen and learn different stories and cultures through gathering and communicating

FOYER & REST AREA The form of the front house comes from the landscape. Landscape is not only the land, it is composed of land and rivers, which connect different land blocks and different indigenous tribes and countries. We divided the different areas of the front house into different volumes, and then connected the different areas with the eal trap representing the river, thus forming a complete and beautiful landscape

PART 3: BANJO CLARKE CENTRE

BANJO CLARKE CENTRE PLAN SPACES ARRANGEMENT

BANJO CLARKE CENTRE CONCEPT TENT STRUCTURE The BANJO CLARKE CENTRE adopts the concept of double-layer design of tents. The internal space is fixed, and the internal space is divided and arranged. The purpose of the second cover of the BANJO CLARKE CENTRE is to have the characteristics of flexibility. This structure can easily change to different mode, like open or close.( like the tent)

OUTER LAYER

BANJO CLARKE TEACHING ROOMS

The design of the BANJO CLARKE CENTRE is inspired by the tent. A tent is something that can make outsiders feel comfortable and relaxed. This will help them adapt to the environment faster. At the same time, the comfort of the tent will also enable people to learn and understand cultural knowledge and stories in a relaxing environment.

INNER LAYER

OUTDOOR GATHERING

FOUR TEACHING ROOMS AND OUTDOOR GATHERING SPACES

MID SEMESTER PRESENTATION The landscape concept of the front house is established, allowing people to climb and enhancing the interest of the building The bonfire form of ARCHIE ROACH HALL is established to guide people to understand and learn about indigenous culture and attract tourists. The tent form of BANJO CLARKE CENTRE is established. The tent has good flexibility, and the structure can be easily changed. The tent can also provide visitors with a relaxing environment to communicate and learn.

SITE PLAN

The overall building fully draws on the landscape of the site as a design form. The river will be regarded as a connecting tool to connect the different volumes of the building complex. When people enter the built environment, it is hoped to give them a feeling of entering nature.

The four corners of the tent can be raised or lowered to meet the space requirements of different situations. During class, the tent will be covered. When gathering activities, the tent will open and become a rest area.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN CONCEPT Trees and other local plants will be planted at the opening of the roof to fully connect the building with nature. At the same time, the trees will also create shadows for the active area of the roof.

ESQUISSE 1 Yao Xiao

The first week was to go to the Melbourne Museum to see and listen to the stories and history of aboriginals, so as to have a preliminary understanding of the aboriginal culture.

Maquette is inspired by the amazement of the long history of indigenous culture and the inheritance of the culture.

Make a physical maquatte based on understanding of indigenous culture

Three tree root-like structures nestle and accompany each other. The hovering and flying tree roots herald the longevity of indigenous culture.

SANCTURARY

Yao Xiao & ChuKang Liang

---Many Dreaming sites (Described in Chapter 3) are located in areas which the particular species is prevalent. Dreaming sites are located near fresh water, and the fresh water is understood to be the final resting place of deceased members of the clan.

Chapter 5 of Nourishing Terrains

Aboriginals have a special connection with everything that is natural. Aboriginals see themselves as part of nature.

---‘When the blacks went the fish went:’ meaning that the habit of preserving the wild was destitute in the ordinary white settler. Beside the fish, where there were deep valleys, running water and much timber, the natives invariably set aside some parts to remain as breeding-places or animal sanctuaries.

Create a design logic and rules through the exploration of the article and the study of architectural precedents.

WATERS OF LIFE

---Indigenous people attempted to use the water to best advantage by working from the most arid places with the most ephemeral waters in toward the more well-watered areas with more permanent waters ------The use of the water by the indigenous people is very different from the use by the European settlers. DANGER Indigenous peoples try to maximize the use of water by moving from the driest place with the least amount of water to the place with more water and longer water levels. (The most abundant ---Dangerous places must not be damaged. The fact that they exist all over Australia has, for those and reliable source of water may also be where animals and plants are protected. In arid Australia, who respect these matters, the social effect of ensuring that strangers whose intentions are water is the life of all people, not just human life.) honest will consult with owners rather than go stumbling around blind, bumping into things. ---Sacred sites are protected. No hunting, fishing, gathering or burning can take place within prescribed boundaries. These sites are often the sites for nesting or breeding

SEASONS OF THE PLACE ---The climates of Australia vary greatly, and the only thing that is certain over much of Australia is the massive unpredictability.

Then use the established rules to make a physical maquette. And draw a scene picture that can reflect the design concept

‘I’m Lost in Paris’ House by R&Sie In a Parisian courtyard

---Australian climate is greatly and unpredictable. The boundaries between seasons are not clear. However, the seasons can be tell based on the knowledge of the land and the relationships between living beings.

Hidden in a courtyard in an undisclosed location, the house is swathed in ferns, hiding it like a birdwatcher’s lookout. Amid the greenery are bulbous glass vessels, the project’s strange ecological edge – a bacteria farm.

The interior and exterior of the building are full of contrasts, but they also influence each other

All the collecting glasses were made by a crafty technique, called Glassblowing. This is a glassforming technique that involves inflating the molten glass into a bubble, or parison, with the aid of the blowpipe, or blow tube.

---‘when the old woman puts on her possum skin rug, rain will come

RULES BASED ON RESEARCH

PHYSICAL MAQUETTE

The design should reflect changes in the water and surrounding environment

The design should respect all the natures and knowledges of that site.

The design should avoid any damages on the land and sacred sites

The design should take full advantage of the surrounding environment

The design should consider the natural aspects of that site from both domestication area and dangerous area

The model is designed with a large number of landscapes, connected from the ground to the roof, to bring a more interesting experience to the viewer. At the same time, the design form of ARCHIE ROACH HALL comes from volcanoes. In the model, it is easy to see that there are many elements in nature, which is also in line with the design rules set by ourselves.

ESQUISSE 11 Yao Xiao & Geordan Ennis—Thomas

During the two days of visiting Uncle Lenny, I spent a lot of time visiting and browsing the land. I learned a lot of indigenous culture, so I made an experience map with Georgen. Here is a record of Uncle Lenny's speech, the interesting things we encountered. At the same time, I also feel that I have a deeper connection with that piece of land
