Noah’s Story

IN A MATTER OF MONTHS, NOAH JAMES’ LIFE WAS TURNED UPSIDE-DOWN.
Amy James and her son, Noah, at the Ronald McDonald House in August 2012. On December 20, 2011, 15-year-old Noah James finished his last final exam before winter break. But he wasn’t feeling well — he had contracted a fever and a cough, which lasted about 72 hours. Nearly a month later, he still didn’t feel like himself. And even after several rounds of antibiotics, he was unable to rejoin his friends on the swim team. By the end of January 2012, he was admitted to a hospital in Evansville, Indiana, just a short distance from his hometown of Boonville. Eventually, he was transferred to a hospital in Louisville,
Kentucky, so that he could be seen by a pediatric pulmonologist. More than a week later, on his 16th birthday, Noah was released from the ICU in Louisville. However, he and his family left without answers, even after a lung biopsy. Another month passed, and Noah was still sick. His parents, Amy and Robby, took him to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, more than a 3-hour drive from their home. Doctors discovered that he was suffering from a rare and life-threatening form of non-reversible obstructive lung
disease, bronchiolitis obliterans. His small airway branches were being compressed and narrowed by inflammation. They then heard the news they were least expecting: Noah would need a lung transplant. The James family was faced with a choice — stay in Indianapolis or travel to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, which specializes in pediatric lung transplants. For Amy, the decision was easy. The two hospitals were nearly equidistant from their hometown, but the roads to St. Louis were better in case the transplant process took them into winter, and she wanted Noah to have the expert care of pediatric physicians. At the end of May 2012, Noah’s family traveled to St. Louis, where they lived in a hotel room for three days before a longterm apartment at the Ronald McDonald House became available. When it did, the James’ were beyond grateful. “It’s phenomenal,” says Amy of the “home-away-from-home” she and Noah shared from May until September. Noah received his transplant on June 14, 2012, less than three weeks after the big move. Following surgery, he spent only 11 days in the hospital, a remarkable recovery. “We’re close enough to home that home can visit us,” says Amy, noting that Noah’s father, brother and sister are able to visit two or three weekends a month. “The Ronald McDonald House keeps us all together in a very ‘home-like’ setting. We’re so thankful.” Noah returned to Boonville in midSeptember, where he was welcomed by more than 300 people while riding in a fire truck. Noah is scheduled to return to St. Louis in December for a 6-month check-up. This time, the James family hopes to stay at the Ronald McDonald House for less than a week.

turns colder and the holidays draw near, so does our Season of Giving. It’s a time when we open our hearts to families who cannot be “home for the holidays” this year. We do so by donating our time, talent and treasure. This can mean decorating one of the three Ronald McDonald Houses, donating time in the McGift Shoppe, preparing a special meal as part of our Family Dinner Program, or contributing to our first ever annual appeal: the Home Away from Home Appeal 2012. The Home Away from Home Appeal 2012 will help provide the financial foundation for the yearly operation of our three Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. If you have already joined us in this important effort, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. To learn more about how you can contribute, please turn to page 16. Throughout my past two years as Chairman of the Board, I have witnessed enormous growth. Our third House, located on the campus of Mercy Children’s Hospital, has already provided a “home-away-from-home” to nearly 1,200 families since opening in September 2010. Our progress continues as we prepare to launch another program in the spring of 2013, the new Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, in partnership with the Eyecare Charity of Mid-America. It has been a pleasure serving as Chairman of the Board for the past two years. Thank you for everything you have done to bring us to where we are today – able to provide comfort and care to almost 8,000 families, both local and out-of-town, every year. 8th Annual Tab Top Pandemonium May 12, 2012 Ronald McDonald House on Park Ave.
On May 12, 2012, RMHC supporters of all ages gathered at the Ronald McDonald House on Park Avenue for our annual Tab Top Pandemonium celebration. Schools, organizations, families and individuals brought huge amounts of tab tops to compete for the largest collection. More than 17,000 pounds of tabs were collected at this year’s event, making this year the most successful Pandemonium yet! Many thanks to Cash’s Scrap Metal & Iron for weighing the aluminum and turning it into a donation to RMHC St. Louis. We are grateful for all who contributed and volunteered. 27th Annual Cassidy Turley/RMH Dinner Auction & Golf Tournament June 3 & 4, 2012 Meadowbrook Country Club
On June 3 and 4, 2012, the 27th Annual Cassidy Turley/ Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament was held at the beautiful Meadowbrook Country Club. The two-day event kicked off on Sunday with a seated dinner, silent/ live auction and raffles, which raised $659,000! The next day, 240 golfers hit the links, where threesomes competed for the championship. The tournament concluded with Jeff Johnston winning the Chip-Off Contest. We would like to thank Cassidy Turley for their tremendous leadership as our Title Sponsor as well as for providing committee members and volunteers, who assisted at the tournament, solicited auction items, attended committee meetings and so much more! 3rd Annual Ronald McDonald House Ride June 16, 2012 St. Louis Community College at Forest Park
The 3rd Annual Ronald McDonald House Ride, sponsored by Mercy Children’s Hospital, took place on June 16, 2012, raising $165,000 through fundraising from cyclists, sponsors and donors! The RMH Ride offered several distance options, including a 6-mile Family Fun Ride with Ronald, 32-mile Fitness Challenge, 64-mile Metric Century, 100-mile Century and 100-mile Fondo (timed ride) starting at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. We congratulate the top three Fondo finishers in the male/ female overall results: Stefan Adams, Mike Roberts, Derek Glanville and Katrina Pon, Becky Sikorski, Lisa Sharpe. This year’s Ronald McDonald House Kids & Clays Tournament, sponsored by Marcone Supply, hit a recordbreaking goal of $320,000! The dinner auction was held on Friday, August 17, at the Edward Jones Atrium, where attendees came dressed in western wear and bid on silent/live auction items. The Sporting Clays Tournament took place at Winchester Nilo Farms where shooters participated in two flights and challenging side games. AHM Financial Group, LLC won the Highest Overall score, taking home four cases of AA* ammunition for the grand prize. 16 YEARS & COUNTING Every Wednesday, five dedicated volunteers continue a tradition of service, 16 years in the making. By donating their time, volunteers Mary Jo Blankemeyer, Linda Scott, Mary Beth Daniels, Nancy Neusel and Bonnie Turner help us carry out our Memorial/Tribute card program, which allows supporters to make a donation to RMHC St. Louis in a loved one’s honor or memory. “When they told us that we saved the organization time and money, we were glad to do it,” says Mary Jo, adding that when they first began, they

worked in the basement of the West Pine House. As the organization grew, their work moved to the West Pine kitchen, and now to the Park Avenue conference room. According to Linda, their favorite aspect of volunteering has been “visiting with the patients and their families.” She also notes spending time with one another as an added perk. And Mary Beth couldn’t agree more. “We’ve seen first-hand what [the Ronald McDonald House] does for families,” she says. “We like being able to help.”

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Cooking Up Compassion
Dinner Program volunteer Jenny Ablan in the kitchen of our West County House
Jenny Ablan loves to cook. As a mother of six, she’s well-versed in the art of preparing healthy, efficient meals for large groups. So it’s no surprise that when she first heard about the Ronald McDonald House Family Dinner Program, she was immediately interested. Part of the process to become a Family Dinner Program volunteer is finding an open date on the online calendar. In doing so, one date in particular stood out to Jenny: July 26. It was the birthday of her youngest son, Georgie, who passed away in an accident 15 years ago. Without hesitation, she signed up.

“I decided I wanted to spend his birthday cooking for families who are fighting for their children’s lives,” she explains. “I knew there would be no better way to celebrate his life and honor his memory.” On the evening of July 26, 2011, Jenny’s family and friends gathered in the kitchen of the West County Ronald McDonald House and helped her prepare some of Georgie’s favorite foods. As they spent time together, enjoying the smells of the meal as it came to life, they decided to make it an annual tradition. “My kids loved it; I loved it,” she says of the experience. This year, Jenny, her friends and family

returned to the West County House kitchen on July 26, just as they promised. “The families were different, but we were constant, and we cooked the same meal,” she says. As the families sat down to eat, Jenny paged through the kitchen’s food journal, a record of recently prepared meals. She was surprised to discover that there wasn’t much variety in the foods being served to the RMH families. That’s when she decided to build a body of healthy recipes that can be prepared onsite in a relatively short amount of time. Jenny hopes to develop a new program that provides 60- and 90-minute menus, including shopping lists and time tables for preparation, for Family Dinner Program volunteers. She has also offered to personally consult with those who lack experience cooking for large groups. “I know that nutrition and stress are tied closely together. People who are under high amounts of stress need food that is going to help reduce that stress, not add to it,” Jenny explains. It’s easy to see that, one meal at a time, Jenny helps make our House even more welcoming and comfortable for those who call it “home.” In fact, her dedication and compassion extend beyond her culinary creations. “I love not only providing a meal, but also another ear for the families,” she says. “It warms my soul that for that moment – for the 30 or 45 minutes that the families sit down to eat a meal – I can help and that the food we cook with love is being served in The House that Love built.”

WHY I GIVE DEB VOGT, a member of our Board of
Directors, shares why she contributes to the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis.
As a longtime volunteer, I’ve witnessed the RMHC mission at work many times. I’ve had a chance to meet the families we serve – from the mother who walked into the Ronald McDonald Family Room one night because she needed to tell someone about her daughter’s progress after surgery, to the kids who gather in the Family Room to share dinner with a hospitalized brother or sister. I’ve talked with a mother at one of the Ronald McDonald Houses who told me that she’d been sleeping in her car while her daughter was being treated at a small Board members Colleen town hospital. Her deep appreciation for the House and the comfort Schoendienst and Deb Vogt it provided was inspiring. Through these firsthand experiences and countless more, I’ve seen the ways that we make a supportive difference in the lives of the families we serve. I have been on the Board of Directors for 6 years and on the Audit Committee for 8 years, which means I have worked on various financial and operational projects alongside staff and other volunteers. I feel confident in the stewardship of my donation; I know I can trust them to make sound financial and operational decisions. Most importantly, I respect the organization’s quality of work and its dedication to the families we serve.

PAYING IT FORWARD THE MORAN FAMILY REVISITS THE RMH, WHICH WAS ONCE THEIR HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME On March 2, 2010, Molly Moran was born with a condition known as persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). Immediately after delivery, she was airlifted from her family’s hometown of Neoga, Illinois, to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center for treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). “I stayed in a sleeping room at the hospital the first two nights,” says Molly’s mother, Maria. “Then Molly crashed, and I was told we would be at Cardinal Glennon for much longer.” Soon after, Maria was introduced to RMHC St. Louis. “I sat on the couch there and bawled my eyes out because this meant I was going to be living away from my family,” Maria says. (Because the Morans’ two older children still needed to attend school and daycare, Maria’s husband, Paul, had stayed home and continued to work.) “But after the first night, I realized this place was right where I needed to be,” she says. After spending 21 days in the NICU, seven of which were spent on a lung bypass machine, Molly was released from the hospital. Doctors warned Maria that Molly might have trouble eating, walking, learning and talking. However, today, according to Maria, Molly is nothing short of a miracle. “If you would meet Molly today, you wouldn’t know that saving her life was a daily task for the doctors at Cardinal Glennon,” she explains. Although the Morans haven’t needed to stay at the Ronald McDonald House since 2010, they’ve remained involved in its mission. In June 2012, they traveled to the Park Avenue House to make a donation of tab tops, money collected from a penny drive, and other supplies for families staying at the House —

all of which were their son Mitchell’s ideas. When Mitchell realized he could help sick children and their families just by collecting tab tops from soda cans, he jumped at the idea. “He just started asking his friends to keep their tabs because we were doing it at home,” Maria says. Mitchell received overwhelming support from the community. Between donations from staff and classmates at Neoga Elementary School, the religious education program at St. Rose, and Harris Metals in Mattoon, he collected 75 pounds of tab tops. “Mitch has always wanted to help kids that had to endure what he did at a young age,” says Maria. “This was all his idea, and he loved doing it!”

Home Away from Home Appeal, an annual giving program that will provide the financial foundation for the yearly operation of our three Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. Families who call our Houses “home” are asked to contribute just $5 a night for their stay, despite our estimated actual costs of $70 per family, per night. Still, this fee is waived approximately 40% of the time to ease the financial stress caused by mounting medical bills. NEW FAMILY ROOM FACES We are happy to welcome Erin Meyers and Jacob McGuire to the RMHC team! Erin Meyers joined
RMHC as a Family Room Assistant in September. For almost three years she has worked in the Volunteer Services office at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and is a graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism. Erin spends her weekends watching Mizzou football, volunteering with the Girl Scouts and traveling.

is very excited to have joined RMHC as a Family Room Assistant in September. Jacob graduated from Quincy University in May with a Masters in Educational Leadership. He joins RMHC with two years of nonprofit experience from the Historic Quincy Business District and Midsummer Art Fair in Quincy, Illinois.

During a typical 20-minute presentation, Ambassadors show listeners all of the ways they can get involved while touching their hearts with inspiring stories and heartfelt messages. Our Ambassadors undergo specific training requirements before attending speaking engagements or giving tours on behalf of the organization. $1 MILLION PLEDGE for the 300th Ronald McDonald House in the world. Our local Chapter, RMHC St. Louis, is extremely grateful to McDonald’s, our largest
corporate donor, for its support throughout the past 31 years. In 2011, 16% of our revenue came from McDonald’s and RMHC Global. RMHC Chapters, including St. Louis, are not owned or operated by McDonald’s Corporation, but the company furthers our mission by supporting various fundraisers, such as the annual Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament, providing volunteers and spreading the word about RMHC. Local RMHC Chapters, including St. Louis, rely on franchise Owners/Operators in their own community. One way the local McDonald’s franchises help is by allowing RMHC to place donation boxes in the restaurants to help raise money. All in-restaurant sales of USA Today are donated to RMHC, as well. St. Louis’ local McDonald’s restaurants have made a 5 year, $1 million dollar commitment to our organization’s Capital Campaign. Beginning in 2009, 5 cents from every Happy Meal purchased in the St. Louis area was donated to RMHC St. Louis to help fund the construction of our third Ronald McDonald House, which opened in September 2010 on the campus of Mercy Children’s Hospital in West St. Louis County.

RMHC St. Louis is fortunate to have three McDonald’s employees, one from McDonald’s Corporation and two local Owner/Operators, serving on our current Board of Directors. Lee Renz is President of the
Central Divison of McDonald’s USA. Since starting his career in St. Louis 37 years ago, he has held various operations positions within the company. Lee has been a member of the RMHC St. Louis Board of Directors since 2011. Lee and his wife, Claire, reside in St. Louis with their three children, Pat, Allison and Leo.

owns and operates two McDonald’s restaurants in West County. She serves as a Board member of St. Joseph’s Academy and serves on the Women’s and Children’s Advisory Board of Mercy Hospital. She is a member of the Women’s Operator Network for McDonald’s and supports many fund raising organizations. Colleen has been a member of the RMHC St. Louis Board of Directors since 2009. She has three children, Henry, Erin and James.
Jimmy Williams launched Estel Foods, Inc., now James Williams, Jr. Food, Inc., to become a McDonald’s Franchise owner. He currently owns restaurants in Granite City and Pontoon Beach, Illinois, Spanish Lake, Missouri and Downtown St. Louis. He has been a member of the RMHC St. Louis Board of Directors since 2004. Jimmy and his wife, Janet, have one son, James Williams, III, affectionately known as “Trey.”

Our three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, which are located inside Mercy Children’s Hospital,
19th Annual Scramble for Charity Golf Tournament! This event took place on Friday, September 21, at the Norman K. Probstein Golf Course in Forest Park. Teams of four competed for great prizes in morning and afternoon rounds. Golfers had the opportunity to test their luck at several par-3 games set up on the course. To add to the fun, the Ladies of McDonald’s (YaYa’s) hosted a tent filled with exciting raffle items, as well as delicious food and drinks! Tournament winners included The Vivian Company and Regions Bank teams for the morning round, and the PGA Memorial and J.W. Terrill teams for the afternoon round. This year’s event raised a record-breaking total of $102,387! Thank you to all the golfers, sponsors, volunteers and committee members who helped make it possible!
St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, provide comfort and care to both local and out-oftown families with seriously ill children. Often referred to as “an oasis within the hospital,” a Ronald McDonald Family Room allows parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and grandparents to escape the hustle and bustle of the health care environment while remaining just steps away from a child’s bedside. These spaces, which are staffed by volunteers, offer the essentials of home — hot showers, laundry facilities, a small yet efficient kitchen, Internet access, television and a quiet place to relax — from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the year. Several St. Louis-area McDonald’s employees comprise McCliques, which are groups of people who have adopted a specific Ronald McDonald Family Room volunteer shift. Members of the McClique then rotate through to keep our doors open. Being part of a McClique is one more way that McDonald’s supports the RMHC mission.
