LETTER
FROM THE CHAIRPERSON Momentum, Fortune and Luck. As former Chairperson, Felicia Malter, shared last year, we set many high-water marks in 2016 for our charity. That momentum continued throughout 2017, resulting in record revenues and a House occupancy rate of 94%, serving 1,654 families. Similarly, our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms served 12,318 families and had more than 86,500 visitors, a significant increase over prior years. And while we are halfway through 2018, our momentum continues! We have been blessed with so much good fortune. Our donors provide us the means necessary for us to deliver our promise of providing a home-away-from-home. We do so with great efficiency, effectiveness and impact. As Thomas Jefferson once said, “I’m a greater believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.” Similarly, our own Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald’s, commented, “Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get.” Our foundation is built on the sweat and effort of an army of volunteers and dedicated staff, with an abundance of passionate committee and board members. What a powerful combination.

CORE PROGRAMS One of the worst things that can happen to a parent is to learn that their child is sick and needs to be hospitalized. Suddenly, life stops overnight, and the world is full of worry and fear. For many of these families, there is an added stress: distance. Sometimes the best medical care available is hundreds of miles from home - or more. In addition, families face the financial demands of mounting medical bills, job insecurity and a healing journey that can take months or even years. This is why Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms exist: to keep families close to their seriously ill children.
RONALD McDONALD HOUSE® • Three Houses and eight extended-stay apartments in St. Louis serve as a home-away-from-home for 59 families of seriously ill children each night • Provides the comforts of home to more than 1,600 families per year, including private bedrooms, home-cooked meals, comfortable living areas, a kitchen and laundry facilities • Open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year
RONALD McDONALD FAMILY ROOM® • Four St. Louis-area Ronald McDonald Family Rooms each serve as an oasis inside Mercy Children’s Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital • Provides comfort and care to over 12,000 families each year, with 86,000+ visits annually • Each Family Room is equipped with a kitchen area, complimentary snacks and coffee, showers, laundry facilities, Internet and TV

MEET AUGUST On July 1, 2017, Patrick and Holly Smith welcomed their fourth child, August, into the world. “Auggie,” as he is affectionately called, was born at 27 weeks and 5 days. Because of his early arrival, the Smith family traveled 75 miles from their hometown of Salem, Illinois, so he could stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. “With Auggie being born so early, there were many times we were scared and tired when we left the hospital,” says Holly. “It was great knowing we didn’t have to drive back home to Salem every day.” Holly, Patrick, and their three daughters stayed at our Ronald McDonald House on Park Avenue for nearly three months until baby August was strong enough to go home. During their stay, the family also found comfort and care inside the Ronald McDonald Family Room at the hospital.
“It was like a short escape from the hospital room,” says Holly, noting that it was especially helpful for her older children by providing them a place to gather, as a family, outside of the NICU – but still just steps away from Auggie. Although their time in St. Louis was difficult with Auggie being in the hospital, the Smith family was able to find joy throughout their stay. One of their favorite memories is celebrating their twin daughters’ birthdays at The Magic House. They also appreciated being able to spend time with other guest families, as well as RMHC staff and volunteers. “Besides the convenience of being close to our baby, we also made friends and enjoyed many meals,” says Holly. “We were so glad to have a place to stay close to Auggie.”

As we closed out 2017, we were finishing the build-out of our new (and fourth) Ronald McDonald Family Room, located at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. This will allow us to serve more families each day.

One of the highlights of 2017 was the development and completion of a new long-range plan, which will serve as our roadmap for future growth and improvement. As you can see by reading this report, 2017 was another incredibly successful year for Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. While our revenue streams continue to grow through the generosity of our many donors, friends and participants in our events, our impact on families continues to grow, as well, in all facets of the organization.
