“Our sweet mono/di twin girls were born
prematurely at 33 weeks and 3 days gestation. Shortly after my water broke, we were sent to Springfield from southern Missouri to give birth at Mercy Hospital, where there was a NICU that could care for them after they were born. Miraculously, I was able to give birth to them naturally, and they came out screaming, which reassured my momma heart that they were going to be okay. They were rushed to the NICU with my husband and mother following close behind while I recovered, and a couple of hours later I went to see them. After 24 hours in postpartum recovery, my husband and I were desperate for a solution that would allow me to stay close to our daughters for however long they were in the NICU—we were told it could last over a month. Someone told us about the Ronald McDonald House just a couple of floors above the NICU, and we applied and were received with such loving care. For the next 15 days, I stayed in the hospital in Springfield while my husband had to go back to work the day after they were born (he is self-employed and couldn’t risk not getting a paycheck). My mom cared for my 2-year-old son two hours south while my husband worked, and I only saw them on weekends. But because of the Ronald McDonald House, I was fed, had a warm bed in a beautiful, cozy environment, and could pump and be with my girls around the clock until they were released to come home. Abigail and Eve did incredibly well and were off nearly all machines within a week. They just needed to learn to eat independently. The Ronald McDonald House allowed me to host my extended family in my room when they came into town to visit the girls and went above and beyond to serve us. We truly don’t know how we could have made it through those dark but hope-filled two weeks without the loving support of the staff at the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Kids.”
