“I am a Type 1 Diabetic and was diagnosed with preeclampsia early in

my third trimester. We knew there were several very real risks to early labor, so when my water broke spontaneously at 34 weeks pregnant, we had no idea what the next several weeks would hold. I was transported by ambulance over two hours to Cox South Hospital, where I was rushed into an emergency C-section. My husband and I got to see our baby for about 20 seconds before he was taken to the NICU for immediate treatment. The very sweet NICU staff helped us get set up to stay at the Ronald McDonald House. We were scared, hours away from home, and separated from our toddler and newborn. From the instant we walked into RMH, we were met with kindness, compassion, and respect. I ended up staying at the Ronald McDonald House for our newborn’s entire six-week stay in the NICU. When my husband had to leave Springfield to return to work, the staff made an effort every single day to check on me mentally. They brought treat bags to the NICU, made sure I was eating and taking care of myself, helped me with laundry, and even assisted me in finding newborn clothes for our baby when he was able to start wearing them. Spending time in the NICU is not something I would wish for anyone, but with the support of our incredible nursing team, the dedication of my son’s doctors, and the love of the Ronald McDonald House, we can look back on this time with gratitude.”
