Architects turn ‘good bones’ into cool home Ottavia Zappala Special to Arizona Republic USA TODAY NETWORK
Brian and Melissa Farling are respected architects. So when it came to building their dream home, they had a few ideas — and knew exactly how to execute them. Brian, lead designer at Jones Studio, is originally from Pennsylvania. Melissa, born in New York state, is the managing principal at HDR Architecture’s Phoenix office. They met at the University of Arizona and now have a 14-yearold daughter, Candace. In 1994 , Brian had just graduated from college when the couple bought their ÿrst home together, a 1956 ranch house in Tempe. They didn’t buy into the idea of a starter home and decided instead to focus on ÿnding a house they could mold to ÿt their needs over time. “We wanted to establish our roots,” Brian said. “We wanted to ÿnd a place that we could really dig into. We just really felt that if we had a property with some basic good bones, we could make it into anything.” Their ÿrst criteria was a good location. The Farlings wanted to be close to Arizona State University and downtown Tempe. Just as important, they were determined to ÿnd a home that hadn’t been recently remodeled, since that would make their own renovation job easier, as well as reduce waste. “Our focus was to ÿnd something that someone hadn’t layered all kinds of architectural decoration on, to make it more appealing to normal people,” Brian said. “We wanted to ÿnd something that

nobody had done anything to since the ’50s, when they were made.” For the ÿrst few years after buying their home, the Farlings carefully studied their remodeling plans. They took out a few walls and tackled weekend projects. It wasn’t until 2003, when they found out they were expecting a child, that they decided to add a studio and master bedroom to the back of the property. above the bedroom and master bathroom. The home now has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Then, in 2009, the architect couple tackled the original building. They compressed their family of three into the new part of the house for one year while the rest of the house was torn to shreds. The old section of the house was transformed into what the homeowners now call the “Yia-Yia Pavilion,” a large indoor/outdoor living and dining room space affectionately named after Melissa’s Greek grandmother. “Melissa’s grandmother was this amazing lady who loved coming to visit us and she loved big family get-togethers,” Brian said. This room opens seamlessly into the backyard and pool area thanks to a large sliding glass door. “So when you have everybody over for Thanksgiving and Christmas and the weather in Arizona is perfect, you slide the door open and you have this great space,” Brian said. A combination of timing and talent turned out to be crucial in the execution of this ambitious home renovation project. “This was 2009,” Brian said. “We had

access to lots of subs that didn’t have any work. So we had so many great concrete guys.” Brian acted as a general contractor, and every weekend he would have subcontractors work on the project. And since the resale value wasn’t a concern, he let his imagination run wild. Some of the unique features of the house were conceived with the intent of reusing material that was salvaged from other job sites.

The magenta pink flowers dangles from my palm tree like a waterfall of orchids. It happened after Clark Moorten gave me one of the “rat tail” hanging cactus they sell at Moorten Botanical Garden. I hung it from a cut stem on the trunk and let it dangle there. Regular squirts of sprinkler drift or misting with the hose gave my rat tail exactly what it needs to flower its heart out year after year. They are called many names, the most common are Discocactus flagelliformis or Aporocactus flagelliformis, so named for the whip-like stems that crowd the pots to dangle long and graceful in bright shade. They originate in dry forests of Mexico, although this cactus does not exist in the wild today. There are similar species but none this fabulous of a specimen, which could have been selected many centuries ago by the Aztecs for their fabulous gardens. It may have cross pollinated in European greenhouses since introduction in the 1700s to result in this particular plant that is cloned by cuttings. Dry forests explains their tolerance of our desert conditions. In habitat, they

grow in the ground and spread horizontally. This cactus also enjoys crotches in trees where its long tresses can dangle freely much like more pendulous orchids. This tells us they are more epiphytic than we think, and demand very
little soil to survive. This is why rat tails are always grown in hanging pots which are very spatially e“cient indoors and out. Hanging plants gives you more green beauty and flowers without sacriÿcing any living space to a standing container. This is one of the few danglers that is able to survive such low humidity. Hook your newly bought specimen to a fence, wall, post or hang from overhead structures. Then see how long her hair grows. Hanging pots provide ideal drainage and enough light to ensure that mealy bugs and scale are less likely to a’ict them. They also beneÿt from air movement in enclosed spaces such as greenhouses. Hummingbirds will guard a blooming rat tail throughout its bloom cycle adding more movement to those shaded spaces. Because this cactus thrives in trees, they also root quickly when a stem is laid upon moist earth. When a treegrown rat tail cactus becomes so long it reaches the ground, it becomes a terrestrial grower. Contact with moist earth elicits instant rooting to access supplemental moisture from the tree crotch above. Such rapid rooting facilitates change from lean food to rich earth for immediate hydration, a drought response. This led growers to spiral stems

on top of the soil to start a new pot of tails, which you’ll see if you look for it. Often succulent plants will root this way in lieu of burial with soil, which causes rot long before roots form. Over the coming weeks the rat tails will be flooding in to sell in spring bloom, but they’re here the rest of the year too. It’s just that nobody notices rat tails unless they’re blooming. It’s not as hard as you would think. Going plant-based can be a good way to reframe your party and shake things up. Some ideas:
