The acronym SaaS probably looks familiar; it is commonly used in the corporate world to stand for “software as a service.” Residential solar energy provider Sunrun, though, is hoping that a different use of the acronym will continue to catch on across the world: solar as a service.

The company also provides services to another group of people that might otherwise be intimidated by solar energy: those that want to own the solar panels themselves, but need help with the logistics of making that happen. For this group, Sunrun offers a “BrightBuy” plan to purchase the entire system upfront.
If you’ve never heard of the term before, you’re missing out on a major opportunity to use solar energy as a cleaner, less expensive way to power your home.

“Rooftop solar and energy storage is the foundation for the next generation of the energy grid. Unlike the grid of the last 100 years, rooftop solar does not rely on transmitting and balancing energy over long distances,” said Jurich. “Rather, it generates and distributes locally. Investing in rooftop solar systems is like building
cell towers instead of landlines - it’s smart and forward-thinking.” Sunrun continues to receive many accolades, not only for its game-changing sales model, but also for its supportive work environment. The company previously won the U.S. Department of Energy’s Change Prize and was named as one of Comparably’s Best Companies For Women. This year, joining the long list of Sunrun’s other honors, the company earned an award for being one of the Top Companies to Work For in Arizona. Employee surveys reveal that the top residential solar provider is also a highly desirable place to work, offering benefits ranging from an employee discount program to massages offered in the call center. One of the key benefits that employees enjoy, however, is an intangible benefit:
the satisfaction that comes along with advancing a cause that they believe in. Employees know that their work is directly helping homeowners save money while dramatically reducing the amount of air pollution and carbon dioxide they release into the atmosphere. The company makes sure to nurture that passion by taking what they call a “human-centric” approach to both customers and employees. Practically speaking, that means that every decision is carefully evaluated for impacts on the people it affects and that the company actively solicits feedback from customers and employees alike. Together, that feedback is helping them to advance their core mission: “to create a planet run by the sun” To learn more about this Top Companies winner, visit Sunrun.com

Top Companies to Work for in Arizona
Recognizing exceptional companies promotes Arizona as a leader in great places to work BY PAULA HUBBS COHEN
ponsored for the fourth consecutive year by the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA), Republic Media, The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com have partnered with Best Companies Group and BestCompaniesAZ to produce the sixth annual Top Companies to Work for in Arizona publication. “As the Valley’s top media company, we are committed to connecting this community with the kind of opportunities that make it a great place to live and work,” said Heather Kivatinos, Regional Enterprise Sales Manager-Recruitment, USA TODAY NETWORK. “We believe in recognizing companies that make a difference, invest in their employees and create positive workplace environments.” This year, a record-breaking number of participants took the survey, Kivatinos said.
“Each year the program gets more competitive with more qualified companies with excellent employee engagement,” she said, noting that scores were exceptionally high so the number of organizations honored was increased from 100 in previous years to 125 this year.
GOALS AND PROJECT OVERVIEW One of the goals of the project is to recognize organizations that create innovative workplace cultures as well as quality jobs and work environments. The project also provides benchmarks for employers by identifying companies that have achieved top rankings in employer practices, employee engagement and satisfaction scores. “When businesses consider where to locate or expand, one of the first things they look for is an abundant and qualified workforce,” Kivatinos said. “The Top Company winners are providing opportunities for fulfilling careers with award-winning cultures. These companies strengthen
“The top companies are the job-creators, risk-takers and entrepreneurs who are building amazing companies and a culture of innovation that is competing on a global scale. Industry leaders are taking notice and worldclass companies continue to select Arizona as the ideal location to grow their businesses.” —SANDRA WATSON,
PRESIDENT, ARIZONA COMMERCE AUTHORITY
Arizona’s workforce and economy through talent attraction and retention as well as bring economic growth to Arizona.” Peter B. Burke, president and co-founder of Best Companies Group (BCG), agrees, adding that an important goal of Top Companies is to raise the bar among our region’s employers, creating excellence and employee engagement in the workplace that will continue to attract talented people.
ELIGIBILITY AND EVALUATION The Top Companies program is open to publicly and privately held organizations, for-profit and not-for-profit. “Companies must have at least 25 employees working in Arizona,” Burke said, “but it is not a requirement to be headquartered in Arizona.” BCG managed the registration process, conducted the survey, evaluated the data and ultimately chose the companies that made the list.

Last year, some 90 percent of the employees at the winning companies answered positively to the statements on the employee engagement and satisfaction survey, while 92 percent of employees at the winning companies answered positively to engagement statements. Burke said that this year, overall scores stayed about the same, meaning companies are maintaining very high levels of positive employee engagement.
TREMENDOUS JOB GROWTH The Arizona Commerce Authority’s strategies to improve Arizona’s economy complement the goals of Top Companies. The ACA completed its first five-year business plan in June 2017. During that time, the ACA worked 564 projects with companies of all sizes that committed to creating 87,132 projected new jobs and making $9.5 billion in capital investments—greatly exceeding goals for both metrics.
How the data was ascertained, compiled and analyzed PART 1: A confidential 76-question Employee Engagement and Satisfaction Survey was used to evaluate employees’ workplace experience and company culture (three-quarters of each company’s score).
ANALYSIS: The combined data allowed the experts at Best Companies Group (BCG) to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strengths and challenges that exist in each company. BCG’s experts then determined who made the final list.
PART 2: An Employer Questionnaire was used to collect information about each company’s benefits, policies, practices and other general information (one-quarter of each company’s score).

Fiscal year 2018 marked the beginning of a new set of ambitious five-year goals. To date, the ACA has already exceeded its first-year goals, with 75 projects representing 19,832 projected new jobs and $3.5 billion in capital investments.
Burke said that the organizations presented on the following pages are innovators and the ones other companies use as benchmarks. “As you read their profiles, you’ll see the myriad ways in which these employers help their employees, their businesses and their communities,” he concluded.
When employees say, “You’re good,” you’re good. Congratulations to all the winners of azcentral.com’s 2018 Top Companies for creating supportive work environments and quality jobs that employees appreciate. Your efforts strengthen our local economy and make Arizona a great place to live and work.

Gallup’s 2017 State of the American Workplace, we encourage you to explore it. Its findings are fascinating. Only 33 percent of Americans working today are engaged. These people love their jobs and employers and proactively work to make their situation, and those around them, better. Conversely, 16 percent are actively disengaged and miserable at work. The rest, 51 percent, simply show up to work each day disengaged, delivering a mediocre performance. In organizations with fewer than 25 employees, 41 percent of those employees are engaged. In organizations with 5,000 or more employees, only 29 percent are engaged. More than half of those surveyed (51 percent) are actively searching for new jobs. No organization can keep 100 percent of its employees. But, the following examples provide valuable insights into ways your organization can leverage Covey’s seven dividends to build a unique culture and more effectively retain talent.
Ways to Build a High-trust Workplace Culture
Being an active listener, offering the benefit of the doubt in tough situations and limiting blame will help your colleagues feel as though they have a best friend at work. 10 percent is formal coursework and training. This is quite common and includes rote memorization classroom learning that culminates with a test or assessment. You’ve likely done this yourself through reading books, articles, case studies and white papers for certificate programs, community college courses or university classes. Through this learning, you’re taught theoretical frameworks and strategy. You’re not taught how to execute strategy. 20 percent, developmental relationships, may include networking, mentorship and reverse mentorship, executive coaching, engaging consultants, learning from superiors, peer counseling and joining a professional association. CCL suggests that 20 percent of your employees’ learning time may come from these informal sources. 70 percent, immersive experiential learning, can include making mistakes, failing, leading cross-functional projects, starting an entrepreneurial venture, taking a horizontal move internally, accepting a part-time job, nonprofit volunteering, vocational training, serving on a board of directors and other challenging experiences. This teaches you how to execute strategy and is extremely valuable in today’s ever-changing business environment.
3. ALLOW EMPLOYEES TO BEST EXPRESS WHO THEY ARE Every employee is unique in myriad ways. To start connecting with them individually, first understand they are far more similar than they are dissimilar. Although their learning styles, goals, perspectives, belief structures, etc., may be dissimilar, they all desire to have a credible leader, be trusted, learn continually, have a coach and inherently dislike change being bestowed upon them. Creating connection is about recognizing where an employee is in her life’s journey and acknowledging that you likely experienced similar ups and downs. Of the 155+ million Americans working today, 67 percent are disengaged or actively disengaged according to Gallup. Part of the reasoning behind this is that they don’t possess the tools, materials, equipment and other resources to complete tasks efficiently, in a way that uses their strengths or gives them opportunities to express themselves through their work.
4. LEADERS ALIGN WORDS AND ACTION Employees need to know what is expected of them when they’re at work, in terms of responsibilities and conduct, and much of this can be learned through a leader’s example. Leaders remove barriers to success so that all team
members do only the highest quality work. Through town halls, internal communications, group meetings, 1-to-1 coaching and walking the talk, leaders set the expectation that every employee is to emulate the organization’s mission and values. True leaders ensure personal and organizational missions are aligned, they confirm resources are available and do what they can to develop effective synergies.
5.HEALTHY WORKPLACE CONFLICT THAT DRIVES INNOVATION Many leaders attempt to use their own life lessons when guiding the behavior of their employees. The “don’t-makethe-same-mistakes-I-did” method. Unfortunately, your employees have different thinking/behavioral preferences, motivators, languages of appreciation, friends, access to technology, etc. Your leadership job isn’t to force them to emulate your life, it’s to allow each to blossom into the most unique version of him/herself possible. Employee differences may lead to conflict, and conflict can be a major driver of innovation. The more ideas that percolate to the surface, the more revenue opportunities you can create in a hypercompetitive world. Low up-front prices are shown clearly on every windshield. Neither sales staff nor customers have to ‘go ask’ and then negotiate over a price. Sales consultants do not work on commission so the price of the vehicle doesn’t affect their income. It doesn’t matter if the buyer’s budget is $5,000 or $50,000, the price, along with the customer’s needs and wants, are all that affect the car selections process. A trade in vehicle offer is an offer to buy. There are no games and, even if you don’t purchase a vehicle there, the trade-in offer is still good. Messina said being a part of the dealership’s diverse sales force offers good benefits and a great opportunity
for advancement. “There are so many success stories,” he said. “Four years ago, a manager from a local restaurant joined our team. He had good customer service skills and, here, he received valuable training to take it to the next level. This past April, he was promoted to Finance manager. His whole life has changed. A rewarding part of my job is mentoring youth and the next generation so they learn this business the right way. It is all about integrity, service and relationships.” There are admirable benefits for eligible employees, including medical, dental, vision, flexible health spending, life insurance, disability insurance, employee assistance, and 401(k). A wellness program helps employees focus on nutrition, understanding the importance of social interaction and mental wellness. In 2018, Avondale Dodge has partnered with FCA and Strayer University to provide an opportunity for employees and their families to earn a college degree tuition free! “Our employees really care about our business and our reputation,” said Messina. “When customers leave, we give them an exit package that contains all the numbers we talked about, our pest price, the dealer invoice, and, if it is a pre-owned vehicle, the certification pack. This transparent process makes it easier on our employee, which contributes to great consumer reviews and ultimately, we sell more cars because we are meeting the expectations of today’s buyers.”

VALLEY CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS AZ EMPLOYEES: 66
Dan Kuiper, Administrator
valleychristianaz.org
There’s something about Valley Christian Schools that makes students and employees keep coming back. “As one of our employees who left and returned, I believe working for Valley Christian is so attractive because it truly feels like you are a part of a family,” said Kelly Clausen, science faculty, student council advisor and beach volleyball head coach. “When you work alongside people who have similar core values and are passionate about the same things as you it is incredibly encouraging even on the toughest days.” The positive environment for employees at Valley Christian High School is so strong, in fact, that the school was named one of the top companies to work for this year. That designation was heavily based on feedback from current employees, who were highly enthusiastic about their work. “For years, the knock on Christian education was that spiritual growth came at the expense of academic excellence. We’ve worked hard at Valley Christian to prove to parents they can send their student to a place where the sky is the limit both spiritually and academically,” said Dr. Greg Tonkinson, Spiritual Life Director and Bible faculty.
6900 W. Galveston St., Chandler, AZ
480.705.8888
The faith-based element of the school develops students as whole people, allowing students to view themselves as people with immense potential to contribute to the world around them. Each student is treated as an individual with unique passions and gifts from God, and is taught to develop those gifts to better the world they live in. In addition to the faith-based element that appeals to many Christian families, the school’s strong academics stand up on their own merits as reason enough to consider sending a child to Valley Christian High School. With an average student-teacher ratio of just 12:1, students and teachers enjoy a collaborative and interactive learning environment where every student gets the personalized attention they need to reach their full potential. With just 421 students, the school is a close-knit community where teachers and students alike feel valued and supported, and can thrive as individuals. Overall, both students and staff alike pride themselves on fulfilling the school’s mission: “that students know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, live like Him, and prepare academically,
physically, socially and spiritually, so they are enabled to make a difference in the world.” To find out more about this Top Companies award-winner, visit them at valleychristianaz.org.

where top consulting talent could make a difference and thrive, without having to sacrifice their life to achieve great things for their clients,” said Michelle Sirott, Practice Director for Point B Phoenix.
PROMOTING WORK-LIFE BALANCE For the past 23 years, Point B “has promoted wrapping work around life, rather than the other way around,” Sirott said. “Our smart, driven leaders own their path to success. Our people are supported and challenged to deliver creative solutions for clients in a way that ignites talent.
“We really do take company culture seriously,” she added. “In each Point B office, a cultural leader is charged with ensuring that traditions don’t fall by the wayside. It’s critical to us to be deliberate in celebrating culture in ways that are visible and engaging.”
EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION Point B became 100 percent employeeowned in 2014. “We are one of the few employee-owned consulting firms in existence,” Sirott said. “Employees make different decisions because of their stake in the game. They’re more apt to think
about the company they want to work for in 15 to 20 years versus how a partner is going to get paid out at the end of the year.” Point B actively sponsors and donates to nonprofit organizations across Arizona, and offers support to associates who take a leadership role on nonprofit or community boards. “Our associates have the chance to make a difference with their leadership skills in support of causes they care about most,” she said. “Our employees, across the age spectrum,” Sirott pointed out, “all want the same thing: to apply their talents in pursuit of a larger purpose; to work for a company that genuinely cares for them; and to surround themselves with people who share their values and who they enjoy being with.”

It’s probably the biggest investment of anyone’s life and it remains the enduring symbol of the American Dream. With a responsibility that large, it’s no wonder that a homebuilder like Taylor Morrison puts such an emphasis on employee satisfaction. Taylor Morrison is more than just one of Phoenix’s largest homebuilders – it’s also one of the best places to work. “I’ve been in homebuilding for more than 20 years and this is one of the greatest places to work,” said Brad Schoenberg, Phoenix division president for Taylor Morrison. “The care and drive to take the responsibility to deliver a family a home, the most expensive asset they’ll ever purchase in their life, and the honor to do that, is second to none in homebuilding.” Taylor Morrison has approximately 25 communities currently under construction in the Valley. Its 145 Phoenix Division employees delivered 1,200 homes in 2017.

As a result, there are no set rules on how to enter the homebuilding business. While a degree in architecture or construction management might be ideal, there are plenty of roles that driven selfstarters can build into a career. “I was a PGA golf professional before I became a homebuilder,” Schoenberg said. You don’t need a specific degree. That family would select floor plans and view options through Taylor Morrison’s website, which the marketing team oversees. At some point, nearly every department in the company has an impact on that home’s construction and that family’s future.
Within the company, there’s a focus on employee satisfaction and unity. The TMLiving philosophy, as it’s called, emphasizes three components: Spirit and Pride, Health and Wellness, and Community and Giving. Employees are encouraged to celebrate victories with one another, take care of themselves and their families, and give back to the community. The result is a kinetic workplace, full of energy.

D.P. ELECTRIC AZ EMPLOYEES: 294
Daniel Puente, Founder and CEO

6002 S. Ash Ave. Tempe, AZ

“The growth of our people is the growth of our company,” said Daniel Puente, founder and CEO of DP Electric Inc, in Tempe. Established by Puente in 1990, DP Electric began with one truck and a workshop in a utility room off his garage. It has since grown exponentially to service major construction projects throughout the state of Arizona, with revenues exceeding $65 million and a work force of 300+. Always an advocate of personal and professional growth, he started DP Electric when he couldn’t find a company that earnestly fostered employee growth. “DP Electric has grown as a company considerably, especially over the past few years, but we have scaled responsibly, ensuring we have the right talent for the right projects,” Puente said. “Our ability to attract and retain top talent directly contributes to DPE’s consistent growth, profitability and industry leading projects. We are most proud that our employees’ experiences and feedback are at the core of our business.” DP Electric has an admirable roster of successfully completed ground-up commercial electrical projects for many of Arizona’s leading general contractors. It has created a loyal following with close to 90 percent of its business being repeat customers. Some of the reasons for this success are evident in the firm’s safety record, bonding capacity and the quality of projects completed. DPE has a history of 28 years as a dedicated trade partner. The company has developed markets and technologies to become an industry leader in
Mission Critical, Healthcare, Corporate Office, Aviation, Hospitality and Medium Voltage. Utilizing advanced pre-constructions processes including CAD, BIM, Trimble Robotic Total Station Layout, Design-Build and Value Engineering has allowed DPE to troubleshoot issues and maintain quality work throughout projects. DPE has a long-standing policy of dependable people-dependable performance. Being on-time and on-budget with top quality work goes a long way in establishing the stellar reputation DP Electric has built in the industry. Going above and beyond cements those construction partnerships, with activities such as appreciation lunches organized for each job site at least once each year. These get-togethers provide an opportunity for the DP Electric office staff to enjoy a friendly meal with general contractor staff, offering time to personally connect rather than just by email or phone. It’s a time when communications can take a good process or interaction to the level of great.
The appreciation lunches serve the dual purpose of also bringing together DP Electric office staff and its field personnel to connect, share announcements, communicate the company vision and values and ultimately show appreciation for all the hard work that goes into every project. These worksite gatherings are among the many initiatives benefitting the company and employees that are overseen by Christina Fernandez, Human Resources Director. “Christina is a key player in the cultivation and preservation of our company culture,” said Puente. “She devotes a good deal of time and talent gathering and assessing employee input, leading team building events and engaging stakeholders to ensure DP Electric is focused on the commitment to our team.”
an internal employee development program called DP University, offering 20+ courses designed to grow its team. A family culture is cultivated through a few yearly team building events, where the staff mingles and gets to know each other and their families by playing games, winning prizes and on occasion, partaking in a company sponsored happy hour. “DP Electric is a company built on the skills, abilities and dedication of many people,” said Puente. “Many of our key team members have grown with the company and their dedication and loyalty have helped shape the past two decades of growth for DPE. We look forward to continued growth and success based on our proven abilities to carefully listen to our customers; being thoroughly responsive to their needs; our staff ’s personal and professional integrity and the pride in the expectation of excellence in performance and opportunity for everyone in the DP Electric family.”
Among the most outstanding growth opportunities offered is DP Electric’s coverage of the cost for an apprenticeship program. For employees starting in the electrical trade, the company covers up to To learn more about this Top Compafour years of schooling. DPE also sponsors nies winner, visit dpelectric.com.
