W.J. Maloney Plumbing continues to find success across five decades Even though Phoenix-based W.J. Maloney Plumbing has completed work in some of the most high-profile commercial building projects in Arizona during the past 50 years, CEO Kathryn “Kitty” Maloney-Langmade considers the expertise and dedication of her team of employees to be the company’s greatest accomplishment. “Plumbing is really an expert skill,” said Langmade, whose father, William J. Maloney, Jr., founded the company in 1964. “I am really amazed at the skill that I have on my team. We have people who have been with us for 20 years. I feel truly blessed to have people who are skilled at what they do and who care
deeply about this company. We really do know plumbing and that’s how we’ve been successful and been able to survive during challenging economic times.” Langmade, who took the helm of the company in 2009 after working in accounting and service repair for 13 years, is actually grateful for the trials of a tough economy that she faced shortly after becoming president. “The lean times have taught me to be happier during the good times,” she said. “I love the thrill of our company being chosen for a job and I’m more appreciative of everything I have—our employees, our customers, our vendors, friends, family and my faith.” Though Maloney does some residential contracting, about 90 percent of the company’s business is commercial, Langmade said, adding that initially, the company’s clients were primarily schools. The first high-rise building the company worked in was the Phelps Dodge tower at Central and Washington in Phoenix. “We were one of the first contractors to do prefabricated plumbing,” Langmade said, where workers assemble the plumbing off-site and then bring the completed work to the job site. Most recently, the company worked on the Mariposa Land Port of Entry complex near Nogales, Phase IV of the CityScape project in downtown Phoenix (the company has worked on all phases of this project), the Chicago Cubs Training Facility at Riverview Park in Mesa and on an office complex that will be part of Hayden Ferry Lakeside in Tempe. Maloney also has worked on the Esplanade office and retail complex in central Phoenix and Collier Center in downtown Phoenix. “All customers are extremely important to us,” Langmade said. “Whether it is a large general contractor or a homeowner who has a leaking water heater, every person matters. Our goal is to have every single customer have an outstanding experience and want to work with us again.”

THE VALUE OF GIVING BACK

Kristin Sager launched her promotional products business, Magical Marketing, five days before 9/11. But she found success so quickly that in spite of a faltering economy in the weeks following that cataclysmic event, she was able to repay the $10,000 she borrowed from her parents just four months later. This year, Magical Marketing’s sales will total close to $2 million. From the beginnings of her company, Sager has been committed to giving back to her community. She is most inspired by veterans and kids, she said. Working hard to be able to give generously is a value she learned from her parents and grandparents early in life. “When I was 13, I babysat and had a newspaper route and I was able to buy my own bike with money I earned,” she said, adding that she made donations with some of her earnings to her church. In college, she worked three jobs and learned how to fund-raise after helping to establish a sorority chapter on her campus. And she still found time to help her grandfather collect day-old pastries at bakeries in Buffalo, N.Y., which he would then donate to the local St. Vincent de Paul kitchen. “For as long as I can remember,” she said, “giving to nonprofits has been important to me.” Her philosophy, she said, can be captured this way: “I feel so blessed and so fortunate and it’s important to me to make sure my 7-year-old son Ian becomes a charitable member of society, so I want him to see my commitment to giving.” Her favorite projects include the annual Veterans’ Day Parade luncheon, which she helps sponsor and for which she donates her time and materials to create about 60 centerpieces. In 2007, she chaired a veterans’ charity golf tournament. While she was eight months’ pregnant, she raised $13,000 to help veterans returning from battle. Because of the nature of her business, Sager provides many

“in-kind” donations, including imprinted t-shirts, baseball caps, pens and cups. She regularly gives to the Honoring Arizona’s Veterans, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the Arizona Humane Society, Banner Health Foundation, Childhelp, the Child Crisis Center, Midwestern University’s “Cuts for Kids” program and Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. To be able to give even more than she already does, Sager intends to triple her sales over the next five years. “I don’t want to grow too fast, though,” she said, “because I won’t compromise the superior customer service that we’ve become known for providing.”

FSW Funding owner finds creative way to support determined students Because she works in the financial services industry leading her own company, Robyn Barrett wanted to find a way to make a lasting impact with her contributions to the nonprofit community. She started her company, FSW Funding, in 2001 to help small businesses with shortterm cash needs. Her company provides accounts receivable funding, called factoring, that’s designed to improve cash flow without requiring businesses to wait for customers to pay. Though Barrett has always been generous with donations to nonprofits, she realized that helping college students who dream of becoming business owners themselves was an ideal fit with her philosophy to promote entrepreneurship. So in 2011 she established the FSW Funding Entrepreneurial Scholarship. One Arizona State University student each year is awarded $1,500, based on an essay about the importance of being entrepreneurial and how the student embodies an entrepreneurial spirit. It’s open to any full-time ASU student in any major with at least a 3.0 grade point average, said Barrett, who serves on two national finance association committees for advancing women in commercial finance and who co-moderated the first Women in Commercial Finance event for the International Factoring Association in 2013. When reading the essays for the entrepreneurial scholarship, she looks for either an applicant already running a small for-profit or nonprofit business or someone who anticipates doing so in the not-toodistant future. “We see a number of essays that truly reflect an excitement and a passion for entrepreneurship,” Barrett said. “That spirit really does come through in the best essays.” But she didn’t stop with a single scholarship in her innovative approach to helping the next generation of professionals. This year, she started a scholarship program for women pursuing majors in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM). The FSW
STEM Award will go to a woman enrolled in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU. The winner will receive $1,500 per year for up to four years and will receive regular mentoring from Barrett, guidance that Barrett hopes will encourage the winner to stay on her chosen career path even if she faces discrimination or other challenges in these male-dominated fields. “I want to make sure the winner feels supported in her major,” Barrett said. “Too many women who start out in STEM majors drop out because of a lack of support. I want to change that.” Hers is the only forprofit company in Arizona providing both an entrepreneurial and a STEM scholarship. “For a long time I wanted do something for the community that made sense for our company and helped entrepreneurs and women in science and technology fields,” she said. “We’re thrilled to be able to provide these scholarship opportunities.”

‘CUP’ CONNECTIONS
‘Red Cup Living’ helps drive success for local business owners
Kathryn “Katy” Romley and her husband Mike have found a way to operate a highly successful business while promoting a lifestyle that renews the concept of community and brings neighbors together. “We honestly didn’t know if our idea of selling reusable red party cups would become a viable business,” Kathryn said. “But we are passionate about helping people connect and the traditional singleuse red party cup is a symbol of that.” The idea for their business came to the couple one weekend after hosting yet another weekly Friday night neighborhood gathering on their patio, a tradition they’ve been drawn to for a long time. “Why isn’t anyone manufacturing and selling reusable, dishwasher-safe red cups?” they wondered, thinking of all the thousands of disposable red party cups they and their guests had thrown away over the years. Almost immediately, they set out to fill that niche in the party-ware market. With manufacturing contacts from Mike’s kitchenware business, they took a year to research and develop the concept of reusable hard plastic party cups and to design their own products with plastic injection molding. “In 2011 when we launched, literally no one else in the world produced this type of product,” Kathryn said. “We are the absolute hands-down original.” The bulk of their business is wholesaling to major retailers, including Urban Outfitters, Cabela’s and Total Wine & More, but consumers can buy their products through the company website. In just over three years, Kathryn and Mike have racked up some impressive accomplishments. Their revenue has grown by more than 600 percent since they started the company. “We started with three products and now we have a line of 40 products, including apparel,” Kathryn said. They have 4,000 customers, both domestically and internationally. This year, their sales volume is expected to be in the millions.
Plans for growing their company are framed by their commitment to enhancing a sense of community around the globe. “Even though we have all these ways to connect technologically,” Kathryn said, “we’re not really connected the way neighbors used to be. We have plenty of online friends, but many of them aren’t in-person friends. We want to bring back face-to-face neighborhood get-togethers.” They want to launch initiatives to get people onto their front porches to greet their neighbors. “We hope to create an emotional connection between our brand and the consumer,” she said. “We believe the sky’s the limit if we look at this as a lifestyle brand, where the red cup signifies the art of getting together.”
