WELCOME TO THE SCOTTSDALE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL’S 15TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION! What could be better than the pairing of Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts – showcasing its 40-year history of presenting cultural and performing arts – with the Scottsdale International Film Festival and its 15-year commitment to the best in global film? Certainly the merging of resources and support are long overdue and make for a logical alliance benefitting Arizona, the Valley, the Center and the Festival itself. With an eye focused intently on our new partnership, you will find films with a tip of the hat to dance, symphony, choir and folk music. Our 15th annual opening night reception, the Landfill Harmonic film and the entertainment dynamic of the Recycled Orchestra prove that this year’s expansion of the Festival owes a debt to the resources of the Center. Our entire opening night event stands as a testament to the grandeur of a celebration that was formerly unattainable. The resources and audiences of the Center along with support from the nonprofit Scottsdale Cultural Council and Harkins Theatres will steadily elevate the Festival in the years to come. Together we can expand our reach and service to the community. In the truest sense, the Festival has become a destination event, and the community should begin to feel the impact on local tourism with more robust programming for film-lovers. We are delighted to inaugurate a special section that recognizes women filmmakers. The topic of gender-based inequalities in Hollywood is legend. On the other hand, this Festival found reason to program every single film based upon merit and not the gender of the director. In doing so, it just so happens that we also reveal an exceptional lineup of new films made by women from around the world. This actuality should resonate as an eye-opener to anyone bankrolling filmmakers. A noteworthy piece of history in our community involves the original LGBTQ film festival known as the Out Far! Film Festival, which I founded in 1997. Out Far! ran for 10 seasons before it was shuttered eight years ago, due in large part to positive shifts in an ongoing, nationwide dialogue. Today, LGBTQ films and filmmakers have become part of the fabric of content regularly produced for mainstream audiences. And luckily, the Out Far! audience remained loyal by helping to seed the Scottsdale International Film Festival. As thanks, we programmed a tribute to those longtime/founding patrons with a sidebar of exceptional alternative themes. Saturday night’s Centerpiece film, Carol, is just one of the timely and relevant examples of the natural progression of what was once regarded as niche programming for a disenfranchised minority into the mainstream. Over the years our patrons have also built up a healthy appetite for documentary films. In the formative days of the Festival,
documentary films would hardly fill up a row with attendees. Many seasons later, films such as Nicky’s Family and Antarctica: A Year on Ice went on to win our Audience Award for “Best Film.” The evolution in viewing taste gave me the courage to go all out this season and create our first-ever documentary sidebar. We are replete with documentaries tackling a realm of social, musical, artistic, humanistic and political issues. A special note of gratitude to the entire team of the Scottsdale Cultural Council and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, from Neale Perl, who green-lighted the opening night’s extraordinary postfilm performers coming to us from Paraguay, to Ally Haynes-Hamblen, who as a kindred spirit has patiently steered me through the unknown territory of a large nonprofit organization, and all the way back to every single Festival patron, foundation, donor, member, volunteer, grantor, sponsor, board member and advertiser. I share with you my delight at the distance we have traveled together and the many new journeys to discover. With gratitude,

ADULTS-ONLY ADVISORY Many of the films in the Scottsdale International Film Festival are unrated by the M.P.A.A. and viewer discretion is advised. We suggest that you consider that the majority of the films in this Festival are for adults. Please use your discretion in determining whether your child is mature enough to attend.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES Please turn off your cellphone and other digital devices upon entering the auditorium. The staff will require cellphone users to leave the auditorium until they have finished their calls. The staff will also require anyone operating a hand-held device with an illuminated screen to leave until they have finished viewing the screen. Please do not send or review text messages during the films.
RECORDING DEVICES Audio- and video-recording devices of any kind are prohibited inside the Festival auditoriums. Admission will be denied to any ticket or pass bearer who attempts to enter with a recording device. If a recording device is utilized, it will be forfeited and the operator will be removed from the auditorium. Unauthorized recording will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

Supporting-Level Members and Above: Reserved Seating Tickets Required on Opening Night One VIP pass allows bearer into all Festival films and the opening night reception, which begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, in the Dayton Fowler Grafman Atrium of Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Each VIP pass holder must preselect his/her Thursday film tickets online by Wednesday, Nov. 4. Appetizers and nonalcoholic beverages will be provided. Two soft drink coupons will be included with each pass for redemption at the bar. VIP pass holders also receive priority position in lines and are admitted into the Harkins Shea 14 Theatre first. In the event of a sellout, however, no one is guaranteed a seat after the film has started. Non-Members: Reserved Seating Tickets Required on Opening Night Purple/black-and-white VIP passes purchased without a membership require the buyer to preselect his/her tickets online prior to Wednesday, Nov. 4. With this package, you must preselect your tickets at the time of purchase. Tickets are required for entry into all auditoriums. One VIP pass allows bearer into the opening night reception. Pre-Ordered Tickets/Packages: Single tickets, Build-a-5 and Build-a-10 packages ordered by midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 28, will be mailed. Handling Fee: There is a $5 handling fee added to all orders, including will-call. (This is a flat per-order fee, not per-ticket.)
Will-Call Tickets: Orders placed after Wednesday, Oct. 28, and before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, will be waiting for you at will-call at either Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts or Harkins Shea 14 Theatre when you attend your first screening. To claim your order, please present a photo ID. Tickets at the Door During Festival: Subject to availability, single tickets may be purchased at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, Nov. 5, only for screenings at the Center, or at Harkins Shea 14 Theatre starting Friday, Nov. 6, before the first screening. Student discounts are available at the door. Students purchasing tickets must show a current student ID. Box offices open 30 minutes before the
first screening of the day and remain open through the start time of the last Festival film of the day. Please note: Tickets are not sold online during the Festival and Harkins movie passes may not be used for Festival films. Suggested: To avoid sellouts, plan your Festival schedule ahead of time and purchase tickets as early as possible. Sold-Out Films: When a film is sold-out, we try to hold some tickets for sale a few minutes before show time. Remember, your best opportunity to buy tickets or passes is before the Festival begins.
Accessibility Seating: Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Harkins Theatres are ADA compliant. (Please see FAQ on page 9 of the program guide.)
Refunds and Schedule Changes: All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges. In the unlikely event that a film becomes unavailable, the Festival reserves the right to make a substitution. If a film must be cancelled after tickets have been sold, you will be able to exchange your ticket for one of equivalent value. There are no exceptions to this policy. If there are changes, they will be announced at the Festival.

A. Provided that you are seated at least five minutes before a film’s start time, you will have a seat. However, all seats are on a first-come, first-served basis after the VIPs and return line/ multi-ticket holders are seated. There will be sold-out films, so it is best to queue up early.
Q. HOW EARLY SHOULD I SHOW UP? A. We cannot predict how popular a film will be and recommend being there 30 minutes to one hour before the start time.
Q. HOW CAN I OPTIMIZE MY SEATING AND FILM SELECTIONS? A. Festival screenings are a community experience. To help plan your viewing/queuing strategy, be sure to talk with fellow movie lovers while in line about which films are attracting the largest audiences.
Q. IF A MOVIE IS SOLD OUT SHOULD I JUST GIVE UP? A. No. Sometimes ticket holders do not show up and we form a “rush line” before the film’s start time for those Festival-goers who want seats that have not been taken. Rush-line seats are released five minutes before the film starts and are always at the front of the auditorium. Also, please keep in mind that it may be difficult to find seats together.
Q. HOW DO I DECIDE WHICH TYPE OF TICKET OR PASS TO PURCHASE? A. There are multiple ways to experience the Festival: If you want to be first into the auditorium and not have to preselect physical tickets, then you should become a Scottsdale Film Forum member at the Supporting level or above, which offers full access to all Festival films. If you want to be first into the auditorium and do not mind preselecting your tickets by Nov. 4 at 5 p.m., then you should purchase a purple/ black-and-white VIP pass, which enables you to select up to 27 tickets, including the opening night reception and film. VIP pass buyers receive a screen prompt while ordering to make their film selections. Only one ticket may be selected per film. Couples should coordinate their schedules before making ticket selections. If you do not require priority seating, do not want to attend the opening night film with reception and want to see up to 26 films at a significant discount, a Festival discount package is for you. If you want to buy 10 tickets to any Festival screenings of your choice, the Build-a-10 Package is for you – and it also gives you a special discount. (Opening night film is not included in this package.)
If you want to buy five tickets to any Festival screenings of your choice, the Build-a-5 Package is for you – and it also gives you a special discount. The opening scene of rolling ocean waves and crashing surf is a forbearance of the story’s schedule of turbulent events.

Once her holiday ends, the girl returns home and promptly receives a marriage proposal from a wealthy suitor. Soon after, the small-town boy comes to the city looking for her. Lust turns to love, and the modern-day Romeo and Juliet begin to devour everything and everyone in their path. The once seemingly harmless summer fling becomes a long-term, complex, frenzied and passionate affair with significant consequences for all concerned.

From dawn till dusk, paced by the calls to prayer, a surprising crowd wanders about on the rooftops of Algiers – closed spaces that have become open air mirrors to the contradictions, the violence, the intolerance of the endless conflicts that mar Algerian society. The film takes place during one day, focusing on the destinies of various characters, friends and families, all with their own singularity and their appropriation of these terraces that dominate the city. Their stories start slowly and show different facets of Algiers today. They all have in common a tragic event in their lives, and the calls to prayer echo all along the escalation of their squalid living. It is a perspective on Algiers seen from above contrasting with the lowness that the city reveals.
Kang, a long-time captain of the Junjin, is disheartened to learn that his ship has been sold by its owner, leaving Kang’s entire crew in danger of losing their livelihoods. Swallowing his pride, Kang pays a visit to Yeo, a human-trafficking broker, and decides to take on the dangerous job of smuggling illegal migrants into South Korea. SPECIAL GUESTS ROBERT ABERLIN With ballroomdancing parents and a ballet-dancing sister, Robert Aberlin found himself loving ballet and modern dance from a young age. He has served as a board member of Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island and on the boards of several New York City dance companies, including Paul Taylor and Think Dance, and acts as an adjunct adviser to Cora Dance. While working as a banker and then as the business manager and a teacher at a New York private school, he began making documentary films. He co-produced two award-winning documentaries, both of which appeared on WNET, the New York City PBS station: Lesson of September, which explored how a New York school dealt with the trauma of 9/11, and Broken Brotherhood, in which men who attended Colgate University examine the decisions they made during the era of the Vietnam War through the prism of today. Aberlin has also been involved in producing several short pieces on film for The Paul Taylor Dance Company and for Poly Prep Country Day School, where he presently works.
ALEJANDRA AMARILLA Born in Asuncion, Paraguay, Alejandra Amarilla is the founder and executive producer of Landfill Harmonic, and was also responsible for the film’s story concept. Integrating philanthropy and a commitment to community service into her daily life and vision, Amarilla has aided a variety of social causes. She travelled to Africa in 2008 with Athletes for Africa to support programs in Northern Uganda that provide education and therapy to former child soldiers and their families, as well as basic necessities for families in displacement camps. Amarilla has also been involved with Women’s Global
Empowerment Fund, whose mission is to reach underserved women through economic, social and political programs, creating opportunities for them. She also co-directed the short film Unleashing Creativity for Free Arts of Arizona. The film documents the healing ability of creativity and the arts. Her idea of making a documentary about her native country became the first step for her in creating awareness regarding children’s causes in Paraguay. Landfill Harmonic, her latest endeavor, hits close to home and has become her love project.
FAVIO CHÁVEZ Favio Chavez completed his higher education studies in engineering of human ecology and philosophy. He studied music at the Municipal Arts Institute of Asuncion and orchestral direction with Miguel Angel Gilardi and Leon Burke, among others. From 2006 to 2007, he worked for the IDB in the project called “Proyecto Procicla,” in the landfill of Cateura in Asuncion as a technician and manager of education programs, interacting with the different associations of garbage collectors from this landfill. In 2006, he began to teach music to the children of the garbage collectors, becoming the first music teacher in this landfill community. That same year, he created the Recycled Orchestra, which he has directed ever since. In 2010, Favio and the Orchestra became the main subject of the documentary Landfill Harmonic, which followed their lives for the next five years. In 2012, the documentary released a promo and Favio’s work became known internationally. He has been invited to give TEDtalks and conferences in Spain, Argentina, the Netherlands, El Salvador, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. He has appeared and collaborated in important publications about social work and music education. In 2013, he received an award from the Prince Claus Foundation in the
Netherlands. He has gone on several tours around Europe, South America, Central America, North America, Asia and the Middle East, directing the Recycled Orchestra at prestigious venues around the world. Landfill Harmonic, the acclaimed film about Favio and his Recycled Orchestra, has been presented in film festivals around the world since March 2015.
JESSICA COX Jessica Cox has famously eliminated the words “I can’t” from her vocabulary. Although born without arms as the result of a birth defect, she has never allowed that to be a limiting factor. While she suffered from self-esteem issues early on and physical challenges throughout her life, Cox managed to overcome and achieve, earning a college degree and a Taekwondo black belt, learning to drive a car with her feet, type with her toes and, in 2008, fly an airplane. That feat landed her in the Guinness Book of World Records and led to an audience with the pope, meetings with heads of state and a great deal of media attention. Recently married, Cox continues her journey. In the present, she has turned the tables on her so-called “disability,” allowing it to enable her as a motivational speaker and advocate in the United States and beyond. In the future, there is no telling where her feet will take her. Her website is Rightfooted.com.
KATE GEIS Kate Geis is an Emmy Awardwinning documentary producer. She began her career at Saturday Night Live and went on to produce documentary programming for WNET, Channel 13, History Channel, A&E and Metro TV. Her subject matter has been a diverse exploration of people’s lives: Saturday Night Live’s set design team, the last checker cab driver, whitewater river runners, public school principals, Eric Carle and Paul Taylor. Previous dance projects include profiles of Miranda Weese, Albert Evans, Patrick Corbin and Terry Dean Bartlett. Since 2006, Geis has been the primary documentarian of the world-renowned children’s book author and illustrator Eric Carle. In 2010, she was commissioned to produce a film about Mr. Carle called Eric Carle: Picture Writer, The Art of the Picture Book, which was honored by the American Library Association as a notable children’s video of 2012, and exhibited in Leonard Marcus’ groundbreaking exhibition at the New York Public Library, The ABC of It: Why Children’s Books Matter. Geis was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, and was introduced to ballet as a child going to the Kirov in St. Petersburg, Russia, with her foreign-service parents. She studied ballet and retired at 13 when she saw the film Chariots of Fire. Running, as it turns out, was not her passion, but filmmaking was. She is a graduate of Northwestern University and is a member of the board of trustees of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.

JACK McGEE Born and raised in the South Bronx, veteran character actor Jack McGee is the youngest of eight children. Admittedly, this may have been his impetus to strive to get noticed – and successfully so, as he was the president of his senior class and a star football player at Cardinal Hayes High School. Shortly thereafter, he realized he had a knack for performing and joined the 1960s rock band The Young Rascals. Eventually transitioning into acting, he was able to make ends meet as a New York City firefighter in the late 1970s. Appropriately so, McGee got his first big part in the 1985 firefighter film Turk 182, and then moved to Hollywood, where he appeared in a number of feature films, television movies and TV series. His most notable television role has been as Chief Jerry Reilly on FX’s edgy firefighter drama Rescue Me. He also starred as Police Captain Mike Sutton on USA Network’s original series Common Law opposite Michael Ealy, Warren Kole and Sonya Walger. McGee has recurred on NBC’s Up All Night and in the Spike TV series Players. He also guest-starred on such TV series as Hawaii Five-0, Drop Dead Diva, Rizzoli & Isles, CSI: Miami, Criminal Minds, CSI: NY and Castle. Additionally, McGee appeared in the Tom Tykwer action-thriller The International alongside Clive Owen and Naomi Watts and Father of Invention with Kevin Spacey. He starred in the critically acclaimed film The Fighter opposite Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, in Moneyball with Brad Pitt and New Year’s Eve directed by Garry Marshall. He was most recently seen in Gangster Squad with Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone. McGee will soon be seen in CBS’ new comedy series The McCarthys as Arthur McCarthy, the patriarch of a sports-crazed Boston family.

JULIANA PENARANDALOFTUS Juliana PenarandaLoftus began her career working in production for numerous primetime television shows in Colombia. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she moved to the United States. She then completed her master’s in film and video at American University in Washington, D.C. After 9/11, she directed and produced a documentary about Aid Afghanistan, an organization fighting for the right to educate women. She has also produced three feature films and established her own production company, Hidden Village Films, with the purpose of producing films of social relevance. In 2012, she was one of eight women selected by the American Film Institute for their Directing Workshop for Women. Juliana plans to pursue the production of the political thriller film she has under development, after completing the Landfill Harmonic documentary film.
NESTOR RODRIGUEZ Along with Fred Roos and Arthur Sarkissian, Nestor Rodriguez executiveproduced the new feature Silver Skies, starring George Hamilton, Valerie Perrine and Jack McGee. Rodriguez also produced Acts of Worship, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival and went on to receive three Independent Spirit Award nominations, including the John Cassavettes Award for “Best Feature.” Winner of KTLA’s Find Me a Comic! competition, Rodriguez is also a comedian, who has opened for Jon Lovitz and performed at The Ice House, Laugh Factory, The Comic Strip and The Improv. Some of his TV credits include hosting gigs on HGTV’s The Fix and TV Guide Television. He has performed comedy on Showtime’s Look, SiTv’s Latino 101 series and Starz in Black’s Staan-Dup
comedy series. He has also appeared in Law and Order: SVU, The Good Wife and ER.
ROSEMARY RODRIGUEZ Rosemary Rodriguez wrote and directed the feature film Acts of Worship. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, including the John Cassavetes Award for “Best Feature,” and received a glowing review from The New York Times. After that, Rodriguez was accepted into the John Wells Fellowship, where she began television directing. Her episodic TV work includes The Good Wife, where she is a regular director (15 episodes, including the 100th), Denis Leary’s and Peter Tolan’s Rescue Me (where she was the first woman director in five seasons), Empire, Manhattan, Elementary, Vegas, Rake, AMC’s Low Winter Sun and Hell on
Wheels. Most recent episodes include: Marvel’s AKA Jessica Jones for Netflix and Outsiders. Her episode of The Good Wife (“Cleaning House”) was named by Entertainment Weekly one of the 10 best episodes of TV in 2010. Rodriguez also directed The Pregnancy Pact for the Lifetime Network, which was the network’s fourth-highest-rated movie with 24 million viewers. Rodriguez wrote and directed her second feature, Silver Skies, with George Hamilton, Valerie Perrine, Barbara Bain, Alex Rocco, Jack McGee and Mariette Hartley, executive-produced by Fred Roos (The Godfather movies, St. Vincent) and Arthur Sarkissian (Rush Hour movies). Rodriguez’s next feature is Loose Girl, based on the memoir by Kerry Cohen, executive-produced by Fred Roos. She is also developing the Showtime TV series Florent starring Alan Cumming. Rodriguez is the fourth vice president of the Directors Guild of America and lives in New York and Los Angeles with her standup comedian husband, Nestor Rodriguez.

Janet Robinson has been teaching film studies at Scottsdale Community College since 2000. With years of experience in the Los Angeles movie industry and her master’s degree in education, Robinson has taught foreign film abroad, ranging from silent film in China to Czech film in Prague, through the Education Abroad Program at Scottsdale Community College.

WHITNEY NELSON was born and raised in Scottsdale, Ariz. She received an A.A.S. degree from Fashion Institute of Technology and her B.A. in art studies from Arizona State University. Whitney has a performing arts background and was trained in classical ballet and many other dance styles at a local studio for more than 15 years.
DURRIE PARKS is an awardwinning record and film producer and founder of the Arizona Film Society. CYLAN SHAFFER discovered his love for the arts while taking a number of film courses. Shaffer also studied dance at the University of Arizona School of Dance. Combining his two
passions, he directed a short narrative dance film as his senior thesis. MICHAEL SIMONYI is a foreign film buff and former world music critic who has assisted with Scottsdale International Film Festival’s programming for 11 years.
MICHAEL TUCKMAN is a veteran of the independent film industry, beginning his career at The Cinema Guild, where he created the company’s theatrical distribution division. He now provides theatrical booking services to independent film distributors and also works directly with filmmakers to release their films under their own banners.
