Once again, with our newest season we bring you more of the high quality films that our attendees have come to expect and appreciate. The opening night party has even made a re-entry into Fest orbit on Thursday, October 9th. And, now is the perfect time to take our hometown event to new realms. So...hold onto your theater seat as we join G-forces with the Scottsdale Cultural Council (SCC) and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts (SCPA)! (See the welcome letter from SCPA Executive Director Cory Baker.) Our official collaboration with the SCC and SCPA is a natural fit in terms of combining their powerful resources with our outstanding film programming expertise. Throughout 2015 and beyond we will be able to bring more films from around the world, host more special events, reach for the stars to bring more attendees to the Festival, and maintain a high caliber of programming all while building on our 14-year tradition of fine international cinema. Festival Policies ADULTS ONLY ADVISORY Many of the films in the Film Festival are unrated by the M.P.A.A.; therefore, viewer discretion is advised. Further, we suggest that you consider that the great majority of the films in this Festival are for adults only. Please use your discretion in determining whether your child is mature enough to attend.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES POLICY Please turn off your cell phone and other communication devices upon entering the auditorium. The staff will require cell phone users to leave the theatre until they have finished their calls. The staff will also require anyone operating a hand-held device with an illuminated screen to leave until they have finished viewing the screen. Therefore, please do not send or review text messages during the films.
RECORDING DEVICES Audio and video recording devices including Google Glass are prohibited inside the Film Festival theatres. Admission will be denied to any ticket or pass bearer who attempts to enter with a recording device. If a recording device is utilized, it will be forfeited and the operator will be removed from the theatre. Unauthorized recording will be reported to the appropriate authority.

VIP PASS provides priority position in lines to see any given film at the Harkins Shea 14 Theatre and also permits the holder to remain in the auditorium between films. VIP Pass holders must still arrive 30 minutes before their films start, and seating is not guaranteed to anyone once a film has begun. In the event of a sellout, no one is guaranteed a seat after the film has started.

Accessibility Seating: All Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Harkins Theatres are ADA compliant. Sold Out? We try to hold back some tickets for sale a few minutes before show time when a screening is sold out, but remember, your best
opportunity to buy tickets or passes is before the Festival starts. Refunds and Schedule Changes: All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges. In the unlikely event that a film becomes unavailable, the Scottsdale International Film Festival reserves the right to make a substitution. If a performance must be canceled after tickets have been sold, you will be able to exchange your ticket for one of equivalent value through the Festival box office. Q. DOES A TICKET ENSURE ME A SEAT?
JOSHUA CALDWELL
Joshua Caldwell is an accomplished director, writer, producer, former digital exec, and MTV Movie Award winner. He has worked with a number of high profile producers, including CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker, for whom he produced Cybergeddon, the online global motion picture event for Yahoo! and directed all of the film’s ancillary content for the immersive website. His award-winning short film Dig, starring Mark Margolis of Breaking Bad, has been featured in numerous film festivals. He’s directed episodes of Welcome to Sanditon, the new series from the creators of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Furrocious, a webseries for Discovery Channel Online. Most recently, he's released his latest short film, Resignation, and his debut feature film LAYOVER had its World Premiere at the 2014 Seattle International Film Festival, where it was nominated for the New American Cinema Award.
SUSAN KOSCIS Susan Koscis is the Director of Special Projects and Communications at Search for Common Ground. Previously, she was Vice President of Arts & Culture, where she created the Common Ground Film Festival. She has been a grants panelist for the U.S. Institute of Peace and for the National Endowment for the Arts. From 1989-1994, Susan was the Director of International Projects for the American Management Association in New York, designing and implementing management training programs and products for organizations and corporations world-wide. Susan has held a variety of positions in arts management, including: the San Francisco Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York Philharmonic, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, London Records, and CBS Masterworks (now Sony). While at CBS Records, she produced a classical music radio program that was heard in the NYC metropolitan area.
TRAVIS OBERLANDER TRAVIS OBERLANDER is a writer/producer and social media guru. In 2013, Travis produced his first feature film, LAYOVER, which had gone on to have its world premiere at the 2014 Seattle International Film Festival. Additional credits include, Furrocious, a webseries for Animalist.com a part of the Discovery Digital Networks; Just The Tip a webseries from Hazy Mills/CORE Media Group; and Ryde, a web-series inspired by the popular rideshare service, Lyft. He has worked closely with CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker, writing the cyber-bridges for the third installment of Zuiker’s Level 26 novel series and also served as the writer’s assistant on Zuiker’s ABC reality series, Whodunnit?

SCC Moderator, Darrell Copp, received his BS in Communication and Performance Arts from Eastern Michigan Uwniversity and his MA in Communication from ASU. He coordinates the Film Humanities program in the Department of Communication and Performance Arts at Scottsdale Community College.
JANET ROBINSON
SCC Moderator, Janet Robinson has been teaching film studies at Scottsdale Community College since 2000. Besides years of experience in the Los Angeles movie industry, and her Master’s degree in Education, Janet has also taught foreign film abroad, ranging from silent film in China to Czech film in Prague, through the Education Abroad Program at SCC.

Since the age of 6, Fred has had a passion for the world of great cinema, and at 74 he remains a dedicated film aficionado. He teaches film studies in the OSHER/ASU Lifelong Learning Program for people over 50, at the Tempe Library.

In 2004, at the age of 56, Catherine Breillat suffered a serious stroke. Her left side was initially paralyzed and during five months in the hospital, she worked like a demon to walk again. Not long after, she prepared an adaptation of her novel, Bad Love, and decided to cast the notorious “swindler of the stars,” Christophe Rocancourt, fresh from a jail term for fraud. Over the next several months, Rocancourt took advantage of Breillat’s condition and stood by her side as she wrote him checks amounting to 650,000. Told in flashback, and bookended by a German student’s search for his biological father in 1970s Israel, the film tells the story of Albert (Christian Friedel) a Jewish boy fleeing Nazi persecution during WWII. Traveling through the mountains of the Black Forest and unable to cross the heavily patrolled Swiss border, Albert is given shelter by a farmer Fritz (Hans-Jochen Wagner) and his wife Emma (Brigitte Hobmeier). Working together on the farm, Albert and Fritz develop a bond and Fritz confesses to him that the couple has been unable to conceive. The frustrated farmer proposes an unusual arrangement—Albert is to father a child with Emma in exchange for continued shelter and protection. Emma is very unhappy about this Closed Season (Ende Der Schonzeit) idea but she relents and soon finds herself falling in love with the young stranger. We observe the Navajo Nation from the inside out through the eyes of these three unlikely characters. In this inspiring and intensely personal documentary, filmmaker Jean-Albert Lièvre confronts his mother’s Alzheimer’s disease. At first, Flore is placed in secure, prison-like facilities and medicated to a state of near-stupor. Watching her condition steadily decline, Lièvre, heartbroken and desperate, takes Flore out of the institution in a wheelchair and installs her in a house in Corsica. There, surrounded by the sea, the sun, and the wind, and no longer medicated, she begins to walk, smile, and even paint again. Chronicling Flore’s life over three years, he learns that this debilitating condition is not something you die with, it’s something you live with. What began with a cell phone camera recording the negative effects of drugs became a touching film about hope, about recovering dignity, and ultimately, about a son’s gratitude. FESTIVAL PROGRAMMERS TAKI ERNST speaks fluent Japanese and possesses a special passion for Asian film.
SANDRA FROMM is passionate about film and sees more than 100 a year. Along with her love for travel, she is an ardent supporter of foreign films.
CRAIG PRATER began his film festival career with entertainer, Sonny Bono, and served as Executive Director of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Prater then joined the Royal Thai government for four years as Executive Director of the Bangkok International Film Festival. He is currently Executive Director of the San Diego Jewish Film Festival.
DURRIE PARKS is an awardwinning record and film producer, and founder of the Arizona Film Society.
CYLAN SCHAFFER discovered his love for the arts while
taking a number of film courses. Shaffer also studied dance at the UA School of Dance. Combining his two passions, he directed a short narrative dance film as his senior thesis. MICHAEL SIMONYI is a foreign film buff, and a former world music critic who has assisted with the Festival’s programming for 10 years. MICHAEL TUCKMAN is a veteran of the independent film industry, beginning his career at The Cinema Guild, where he created the company’s
theatrical distribution division. He now provides theatrical booking services to independent film distributors and also works directly with filmmakers to release their films under their own banners. He has served as a panelist and juror at multiple film festivals and is a frequent participant in film industry panel discussions. FRED LINCH - OSHER Moderator. Fred Linch currently teaches at the ASU Lifelong Learning Program for people over 50, at the Tempe Library, and Sun City Grand.
