The Pantheon. The Panama Canal. The Hoover Dam. When you think of concrete, you might imagine great feats of engineering, or at least highway overpasses and other sturdy, stolid structures. But concrete has become a stylish medium in the home, thanks to interior designers and artisans.
“Concrete is such an amazing and cheap material. I can get an 80-pound bag from Home Depot and turn it into tables, vases and planters without using power tools,� says Boston-based designer Ben Oyeda, who offers instructions for several projects on his website, www.homemademodern.com. Finding a house or apartment to rent in metro Phoenix has been getting harder for years, but low-income families are being squeezed out of the market the hardest. Some reasons:  Many Millennials have opted to lease instead of buy.  Lots of former homeowners who lost houses to foreclosure have had to rent.  Many Valley rental houses and apartments, affordable to people earning below the area’s median income a few years ago, have been renovated and are now drawing higher rents and more well-off tenants. The upshot: Finding an affordable rental home or apartment in the Phoenix area has become much tougher for low-income households. The Valley’s median income household income is about $50,000, so families earning below that are typically considered lower-income households. A new study backs that up. It found there are only 22 affordable rental homes available for every 100 Arizona low-income households that have to rent. The problem is worse in metro Phoenix with only 19 reasonablypriced houses or apartments for every 100 families in need. The research from the Arizona Housing Alliance and Washington D.C.-based National Low Income Housing Coalition found another 142,000 affordable rental homes are needed for the state’s low-income population. That’s more houses and apartments than there are in all of Scottsdale. Nationally, 31 rental homes are available for every 100 very low-income households. Tax credits and other federal government programs have recently helped spur the construction of several affordable rental projects, including the Devine Legacy complex in central Phoenix and Apache ASL Trails in Tempe. But based on this study, more affordable housing aid is needed. In response to the shortage of affordable rental housing, Arizona housing advocates are calling for replenishing the State Housing Trust Fund to help finance more construction. The home was sold by Tracy Conrad, president of Nextiva Inc., a cloud-based telephone provider in Scottsdale.
$2,800,000 Paul and Tanya Freeman purchased a 5,535 square-foot home with pool built in 2009 on the north side of the Desert Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale. The home was sold by Richard and Kristine Weston.
$2,700,000 Scott and Lisa Taylor used their living trust to pay cash for a 4,514 square-foot home built in 2007 at La Posada in Paradise Valley. The home was sold by Scott and Laura Eller through their family trust. Scott Eller has served as executive vice president and secretary of Eller Media Corp., an outdoor advertising company founded by his father, Karl Eller. Last week the Ellers’ sold a nearly 8,000 square-foot home in Paradise Valley for $2.5 million.

Jim Hacking became president and CEO of Ingersoll Machine and Tool Partnership when his company the Jim Hacking Group bought the company and the Port Colborne Forging Group division from Ivaco Inc. in 2004. The company, which produces tractor-trailer axles, machine parts and munitions for primarily U.S. and Canadian customers, is in Ontario, Canada. The home was sold by Robert McKercher, as vice president of Biltmore Projects Corp., a Delaware corporation in Calgary Alberta.

Simple steps to protect yourself against online fraud Credit-card fraud and identity theft continue to grab headlines. Credit-card and online payments have made it easier than ever to manage our finances and monitor our bank accounts. For renters, it makes paying on time easier and saves postage or a trip to the office. However, there have been major security breaches with our favorite retailers and numerous banks. Despite all the work to keep our personal and financial infor-
mation safe, it’s still possible to become the victim of fraud. Small steps can keep data safer.
Online payments Many apartment companies allow residents to pay online, with a credit card, or deposit checks electronically. Most credit or debit cards use a third party to process payments. When you set your password, choose one with at least eight characters that isn’t easy to guess. Add characters, capital letters and numbers.
Some rent-payment companies have an app. It’s particularly important that you have a complex password for apps because you are often using different wireless networks on your mobile device.
Take care with Wi-Fi When you set up your home wireless system, make sure it has a secure connection that requires a username and password, and then set a strong password. Check with your provider about protecting your wireless network.
If you don’t set up a secure network, you will be vulnerable to hacking. Apartment communities often offer complimentary Wi-Fi for residents and guests in common areas. It’s a great perk, but it’s critical to be sure you are safe on their network. Don’t use an unsecured network. Ask for the password for the secure Wi-Fi.
