Let’s learn! There’s no getting around it—back-to-school season is here. School supplies taking over store aisles and welcome letters from teachers are signs that the relaxing summer season is nearing an end. Soon it will be time to wake up early, get back into a routine, and start learning something new.

Whether a student heading off to grade school or college, or an adult seeking continuing education, this is a great time to get excited about learning. One of my favorite quotes comes from American humorist and writer Don Herold who says, “The brighter you are, the more you have to learn.”
Lifelong Learning is one of DC Ranch’s Community Values, and this month’s cover story highlights educational opportunities for a variety of residents’ interests. From cooking classes to writing workshops, you can read about all the offerings on pages 10 and 11.

Ranch Updates Security satisfaction remains high
T
he results of the 2018 Community Safety Survey returned ratings similar to the previous survey in 2016. Both the 2018 and 2016 surveys showed a 77-percent resident satisfaction rating for the community’s current security provider, Allied Universal. Residents were polled on satisfaction of service, professionalism, response rate, visibility of patrol vehicles and customer service. Residents were also asked if the frequency of security-related incidents had increased, decreased, or remained level over the past two years. While more than a third of the respondents felt that there have been more security incidents, the satisfaction scores remained consistent. Additionally, residents were asked about the quality of community safety services which also received high marks.

Taste of Summer Cooking Class
DC
Ranch residents enjoyed a Taste of Summer cooking class at The Homestead Community Center last month. Each course was made with fresh summer ingredients including berries, romaine lettuce and watermelon. Chef Cambria from the Classic Cooking Academy gave participants tips and taught them new techniques like how to pick produce and properly prepare a flank stank. At the end of the cooking class, residents sat down with wine to enjoy the fruits of their labor with neighbors, family and friends. “It was fun to do something different and get out to meet my neighbors. It really adds to our sense of community,” said Jessica Lindemulder, a resident of Camden Foothills.
The menu consisted of a curried watermelon salad, steak chimichurri with squash and roasted potatoes. To top it off there was a chocolate mousse soufflé served for dessert.
The class was a big success that left residents asking for more.
The Classic Cooking Academy offers a variety of cooking classes on different types of cuisines. For more information, visit ccacademy.edu.

Copper Ridge Goes Back to School
S
BY LINDSAY STOLLER-SLOVER | COPPER RIDGE SCHOOL
chool supplies, a new lunch box and a first day of school outfit—all are exciting parts of back to school for Copper Ridge students. Add to the mix excitement about meeting the teacher and getting to see friends again, and the end of summer turns into anticipation for the first day. Though summer might seem like a quiet time of year at Copper Ridge without the hubbub of students, teachers actually stay quite busy. So what goes on at a school over the
summer? Administration and office staff work throughout the summer to register middle school students for classes and to enroll new students. Teachers stop by to do a little work on their classrooms, and often attend professional development or training sessions. Of course, everyone takes time to relax and rejuvenate, but always looks forward to welcoming students and parents back in August. Parents and families often ask what they can do to ensure students are prepared for school to start, and here are some ideas:
BACK TO SCHOOL SCHEDULE Children take advantage of the summer to sleep in and relax; however, this can make the transition back to school a little rough the first few days. In the week or two before school, encourage your
student to follow a school schedule for waking up and daily activities. This will help ensure students are back in the swing of things the first day.
PREPARATION
Though students are usually excited about the start of school, they can be a bit nervous, too. Help your student think of the many great things about the upcoming year, such as books they will read or field trips they will take. For older students, try to brainstorm milestones, such as getting to change classes in sixth grade or being closer to high school for eighth grade. By doing this, students can better focus on the many positive things to come. The start of school will come before we know it and Copper Ridge is looking forward to a great 2018-2019 school year. The staff is eager to see parents and students at Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, Aug. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. For more information, visit susd.org.

Local businesses help families save time and reduce stress as school year starts
T
BY JEREMY STEVENS | COMMUNIT Y COUNCIL
he beginning of the school year can often be a stressful time for parents trying to juggle their children’s school schedules and extracurricular activities. That usually means tasks like grocery shopping and making dinner can fall by the wayside—there simply isn’t enough time.
AR-0008760782-01
For the ultimate convenience for weeknight family dinners or for foodies throwing together fun lunches, brunches, or dinners with friends, a new mobile app called “Bites” will arrange for an affordable in-home chef to bring locally sourced ingredients, farm-to-table, to your home and also prepare the meal from scratch in your own kitchen.
The Bites app was developed by DC Ranch resident Roza Ferdowsmakan, who is a busy mom herself. “The chef arrives with all the cooking gear and fresh ingredients. They do all the prep, cooking, and cleanup and can plate as many meals as the customer ordered,” said Ferdowsmakan. You can download Bites Foodie App onto your phone from the App Store or Google Play. Bites is a brand new app and it’s free.

Additionally, several grocery stores near DC Ranch now offer delivery or curbside pickup, saving residents time and making grocery shopping easier than ever.
Safeway at Market Street at DC Ranch offers same-day grocery delivery services if residents order before 1 p.m. Simply place the order online on the Safeway website and groceries will be delivered to the home in windows of one, two, or four hours.
For even faster service, the DC Ranch Safeway now offers the Drive Up & Go service. This allows residents to pre-order their groceries online, and within an hour the groceries will be ready for pickup at the store. Park in the designated spot and an associate will bring the groceries right to the car. Fry’s at Thompson Peak and Hayden Road offers a similar grocery pickup program called ClickList. Place the order online and indicate when you want to pickup the groceries. When you arrive at the store, simply call the designated number and your groceries will be directly loaded into your car.
For rush orders, Fry’s, Safeway, and the Bashas’ at Thompson Peak Parkway and Bell Road have partnered with Instacart to offer same-day home delivery within two hours. To get started, visit the website of your preferred grocer for further instructions.
No matter what your need, there are several convenient options to make your grocery shopping and meal cooking easier.
Neighborhood block party brings community together Grimaldi’s has earned more awards than any pizzeria in the country!

Using only the freshest ingredients, a “secret recipe” pizza sauce, handmade mozzarella cheese and dough, Grimaldi’s serves traditional pizza (as it began in Naples, Italy) in an upscale yet casual, family-oriented pizzeria. The intense heat of the oven evenly bakes the pies to create Grimaldi’s famous crispy and smoky thin crust that Zagat has voted best pizza year after year. he Desert Camp Village of DC Ranch is bringing back the traditional neighborhood block party to connect with neighbors and friends.
“These gatherings have been a great way to get to know our neighbors,” said Sheryl Lowenhar, resident of Desert Camp. “It’s also about safety and a sense of community. It’s so important to know the people you live around and see every day.” The idea, originally inspired by the Rosewood neighborhood in Desert Camp Village, was such a success that the Camelot neighborhood decided to follow in their footsteps.
The family-friendly weekly gatherings are on Wednesdays, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the pocket park near the front entrance of the Camelot neighborhood for all neighbors to enjoy. Marci Ann Walsh started the Rosewood block parties as a way to bring the entire community village together and the gatherings eventually grew to become something neighbors looked forward to after a long day. Lisa Olsen, a Rosewood resident since 2012, fondly recalls the gatherings as the perfect reason for everyone to come outside for drinks, conversation and laughs.
“These gatherings have been a great way to get to know our neighbors. It’s also about safety and a sense of community. It’s so important to know the people you live around and see every day.” —Sheryl Lowenhar “So many people come home and go right inside their homes and you never really see or meet them. I’ve made some solid, life-long connections with neighbors that I otherwise would’ve never talked to,” said Olsen. Jack Daugherty, Neighborhood Voting Member of the Camelot neighborhood, would like to see more people in his neighborhood get involved.
“Eventually, I’d love to have music and food out here. It’s exciting to get together and learn about your neighbors. Often, we have a lot more in common than we think. It helps to have a tight-knit community,” said Daugherty. To coordinate your own block party, contact your Neighborhood Voting Member for more information.

DC Ranch Pioneers BY NIA HUGHES | DC RANCH COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Julie Hancock and her husband Mark, are the Managing Directors of Camelot Homes, one of the oldest, familyowned homebuilders in the Valley.
Camelot Homes has been involved with DC Ranch from the very beginning and is still the largest single builder in DC Ranch building over 590 homes in the Haciendas, Montelena, The Verandahs at Silverleaf, The Villas and the Courtyards at Market Street.
“I can clearly remember sitting in on the early stakeholder and land planning meetings thinking DC Ranch would be something very special and different from anything we’d seen or been a part of,” said Julie Hancock. “At that point, it was nothing but land. There was a competitive process where we had to submit product designs—and they had to fit the vision for DC Ranch.” The porte cocheres, courtyards and covered patios to private entrances, that you see in various villages throughout DC Ranch are the designs of their architect who went above and beyond to create something unique for the new exclusive community coming to north Scottsdale. “DC Ranch was built on the value of human connectivity. There’s one way in and one way out, pocket parks, front yard living and communal mailboxes,” said Hancock. Although they could choose to live anywhere, the Hancocks’ are long-time residents of DC Ranch.
Meet: Julie Hancock They believe in the community and enjoy all of the amenities it has to offer including shopping and dining.
The couple’s daughter and grandchildren live just a few blocks away which further solidifies the Mark and Julie Hancock's Silverleaf home. sense of community Julie feels when she enters the gates to her Silverleaf home. According to her, all of their families’ major life events have happened in DC Ranch. In fact, her daughter and son-in-law were one of the first couples to be married at Silverleaf Club, where she and her husband are members.
“We attend the events, go to Halloween block parties, and hike the paths and trails with friends. I wouldn’t live anywhere else. I have a pride of ownership and I feel good when I see my neighbors. They’re still excited about their homes after all of these years,” she said. The home values at DC Ranch have increased over the years—something that’s desirable for all homeowners. Residents are choosing to remain in their homes, instead of selling, which Hancock believes speaks to the success and irreplaceability of DC Ranch.
“We’ve noticed that people are choosing to refresh their homes in DC Ranch instead of selling. That sparked us to create a new remodeling division specifically for homeowners who want to give their home a ‘refresh’,” said Hancock. LISSA LEE HICKMAN (480) 912-4115

Camelot Homes has noticed a big focus on indoor/outdoor living in recent years. Homeowners are taking advantage of the mild winters with retractable doors and guest houses as well as updating kitchens to brighter, more contemporary finishes and newer technology. “We see ourselves being in DC Ranch for the long haul; we don’t plan on ever leaving,” smiled Hancock.
