Technology

The ever-increasing need for technology in the classroom is top of mind for today’s educators. To best prepare students for college and career, Mesa Public Schools is upgrading its wireless infrastructure to improve internet connectivity in its classrooms. Laying the proper groundwork is essential so classrooms can be infused with laptops, computers, tablets and other technology devices. Technology allows for increased rigor and differentiation in instruction and makes learning more interactive, engaging and fun. A Classroom without Walls Technology allows students and teachers to explore the world. With the touch of a button, classrooms become global. Using webcams, teachers lead students on virtual field trips, exploring world-class art museums, national parks and historic battlefields. With Google hangouts, classes from across the street, country or ocean share information with one another. Kindergarten teacher Mary Dominis tapped into this technology to connect her Highland Elementary class with students from West De Pere, Wisconsin for a Read Across America event. Students prepared by learning new vocabulary words, participating in geography lessons and watching other hangouts on YouTube to understand the process. The day of the event students sat cross-legged on their activity mat, eyes focused on 14

the TV screen, as they connected with students from Hemlock Creek Elementary School. One student exclaimed, “Ms. Dominis, those kids can really see us and hear us like we were right in their classroom!” A Highland student stood before the camera, holding a photo of her dad next to a giant saguaro cactus to demonstrate its mammoth size and the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. The Hemlock Creek students shared stories about their winter weather. The excitement level was high as they shared their favorite books with each other, but calmed as Ms. Dominis started to read “The Day the Crayons Quit” to both classrooms. Ms. Dominis acknowledges, “Technology is increasingly becoming an integral part of the learning process. It is not just an extra tool that we may or may not choose to

She relies on it every day to facilitate data collecting during science experiments. It makes saving information and comparing results across multiple class periods a snap. The Skyline High School teacher shares, “I enjoy incorporating tutorials and videos in class because they make it easier for students to visualize the information. Sometimes, pictures or drawings don’t capture complex concepts, especially for processes like DNA transcription and translation.” Eisenhower Center for Innovation is a one-to-one computing school. Every student uses an iPad during the

instructional day. Tracy Yslas, principal, says, “This is an exciting time in education. By partnering with parents and the community and by bringing in new strategies and resources, we can provide a unique environment. Students may not have had access to these opportunities without the innovation we provide.” Jamie English, sixth-grade teacher, says, “Technology makes work more efficient because students can’t lose homework stored on their iPads. Instead of making copies, I AirDrop information to my students and they store it on their drives.” Students access their personalized learning plans by capturing QR codes that direct them to lessons and materials designed to meet their needs. Down the hall, Judith Laten attests, “When one student learns something, it spreads exponentially.” Her fifthgrade class works in small writing groups and collaboratively revises each student’s paper electronically. For Ms. Laten the best part of a student’s iPad is the opportunity for spontaneity. Technology at their fingertips allows students to immediately research unfamilar words. She says, “It’s music to my ears when a student asks if there is a way to bookmark Etymology.com.”

esa Public Schools is home to one of the few dual language programs in the East Valley. Keller Elementary School offers kindergarten through fifth-grade curriculum, with plans to expand through sixth grade in the 2014-15 school year.

Program goal The goal is for students to become bilingual and biliterate, while gaining an appreciation for other cultures. The Keller Elementary model is aligned to Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards. Students receive instruction in both languages, with the day divided into English and Spanish blocks. They are encouraged to use the learned language and content in group settings and during individualized instruction with the teacher. Cultural diversity is incorporated in the program through student participation in events that honor important historical figures, traditions and holidays. The Mesa Arts Center’s Dia de los Muertos Festival is one such event.

Keller Dual Language Program Programa de Lengua Dual de Keller

Increased support for all Research indicates children can transfer learning in one language to another, enhancing a child’s educational and cognitive development. Dual language programs transform the experience of students, teachers, administrators and parents into an inclusive school community. According to Vanessa Gaspar, third-grade dual-language teacher, “The Dual Language Program enhances support for English language learners, while providing Englishspeaking students the opportunity to communicate in Spanish.” Student achievement Increased student achievement results are linked to the rigorous challenges in classroom curriculum. In 2004, George Mason University published an 18-year study of dual language programs in 23 school districts and 15 states. They found that dual language immersion fully closes the achievement gap between 18

English-language learners and native speakers of English. Lourdes Mejia, fourth-grade duallanguage teacher points out, “The payoff is huge for our students proficient in both languages! Studies show bilingual employees make an average of five to 20 percent more than their monolingual counterparts.” Ellen Bialystok, a cognitive neuroscientist, has studied bilingualism for more than 40 years. In an interview published in The New York Times, May 30, 2011, she reported there are two major reasons heritage languages should be passed on to children. First, it connects children to their ancestors. Second, based on years of research, bilingualism is good for you because it makes your brain stronger. People who regularly use two languages tend to perform better on executive-function tasks and maintain better cognitive functioning with age. Open-enrollment students are welcome.
