F

or most folks, Fluffy and Fido are true family members — and that’s certainly the case for many active adults, whether they live in a single-family home community or in an independentliving community with apartment-style living spaces.

Therefore, when considering a move to an adult-oriented community, one of the most important questions to ask is: will my four-legged friend(s) also be happy here? Fortunately, at many of these

communities, Flossie and Felix often have their own amenities, sometimes shared with other community members, sometimes right in their own home.

At Robson’s active-adult communities, pets are top of mind, thanks to the company’s founder and chairman, Ed Robson. “We love pets; it is one of our core values,” said Steve Soriano, executive vice president of Robson Resort Communities. “Mr. Robson adores his dogs and brings them to the office almost every day. He currently has four dogs in his family: Zoe, Duke, Ricky and Baily. They stroll through the halls looking for treats or someone to throw the ball to them.” At Robson communities, the dog parks are popular gathering and socializing places — for both humans and their canine companions. “They are segmented by size

Benefits of a senior-living community “Perhaps the biggest benefit of living in a retirement community comes from being around others and the availability of enriching programs,” said Christy VanderMolen, the community’s sales manager. “Research has shown social engagement can lead to better health and longevity, while social isolation and loneliness leads to poorer health and a shorter life.” Studies have also shown that people’s health improves after moving into a retirement community, Biel added. “Researchers attribute this to eating more nutritious meals, getting more exercise, socializing with others and participating in lifeenriching programs. And the healthier people are, the more independence they have and the more control they have over their future,” he said.

Ask the Experts

QAwith Dr. Matthew Goetz, DVM

O

ur experts are Dr. Matthew Goetz, DVM, Medical Director of Arizona Animal Welfare League, and Dr. Ryan A. Dunning, DVM, Managing Veterinarian of Countryside Animal Hospital in Tempe.

Q: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MICROCHIPPING YOUR PET? GOETZ: Microchipping significantly increases your chances of recovering your lost pet. Tags can be pulled off, collars can be removed, but microchips are implanted under the skin and are active for the life of the animal. They are a permanent ID solution. Q: HOW IS IT DONE? DUNNING: We use a 14-gauge needle to implant the microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) under the skin between the shoulder blades. Q: HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN A PREVALENT TECHNOLOGY? GOETZ: Microchipping pets began in the 1980s but became widespread and popular in the 1990s. Q: WHAT IS THE AVERAGE COST? DUNNING: The average cost is anywhere from $25 to $75 depending on the manufacturer, registration, etc.

Healing technology

Q: DO MOST VETS USE THE SAME MICROCHIPPING COMPANY? GOETZ: No, some are contracted with companies who offer discounted microchip pricing; others have personal preferences on size and brand. All microchips for animal use do have to meet certain guidelines to ensure safety of the animal. Q: CAN ALL CHIPS BE TRACKED REGARDLESS OF WHICH COMPANY’S MICROCHIP IS USED? DUNNING: Most scanners today will read both the old and new frequency microchips. The scanners that we use will read all of the common microchips implanted in the U.S. Q: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KEEP YOUR CONTACT INFO UP-TO-DATE WITH YOUR TRACKING COMPANY? GOETZ: The only way for the finder of your animal to contact you is through the contact information you provide to the microchip database — so it must be updated for you to be contacted in the event your pet is found. Some charge a fee for updating the information but it is money well spent if it will help you reunite with your lost pet.

Innovative medical technologies offer effective alternative to traditional therapies BY LEIGH FARR, FOR LASERTECH PAIN AND BACK RELIEF CENTER

For LaserTech founder Craig Zimmerman, DC, helping people who suffer from chronic pain get their lives back is personal. A former gymnast and tennis enthusiast, Dr. Zimmerman introduced laser therapy to his patients 12 years ago when he couldn’t overcome the constant ache in his wrist after injury and years of overuse. “The pain in my wrist went on for 27 years and really affected my quality of life and my ability to engage in sports and activities with my family that I enjoy doing,” said Dr. Zimmerman, a chiropractor who is board-certified in physical medicine modalities and whose practice focuses on innovative medical technologies. “I tried chiropractic therapies, exercise therapy, acupuncture and pain medication, but the problem continued to the point where my wrist became severely degenerated.” After trying many types of treatments, Dr. Zimmerman knew he had to find a better solution for his condition as well as for his patients to improve their quality of life. The answer: a result-oriented combination of noninvasive medical technologies including laser therapy. “When my wrist was treated with a combination of multiple types of lasers,

it became totally 100-percent functional and I have been pain-free now for 12 years,” said Dr. Zimmerman. “Not only did the experience teach me there’s a different way to get relief, but I also discovered there’s a different way to get sustainable relief.”

Getting to the Source At LaserTech, the highly trained, compassionate team of doctors and technicians offers safe and effective treatments that manage pain caused by a wide array of conditions including arthritis, neuropathy, spinal stenosis, back pain, sciatica, shoulder pain and knee pain—without the use of medications, steroid injections or surgery. The treatment modalities offered by the LaserTech team have been shown to resolve pain and heal damaged tissue. “Pain is not really the problem, it’s an alarm telling you that there is a problem and you don’t want to turn that alarm off.You want to take care of the fire, so to speak,” said Dr. Zimmerman. At LaserTech, doctors address four key sources of chronic pain using a

combination of modalities specifically tailored to each individual patient’s needs. “We go after the sources of pain including healing damaged tissue, modulating abnormal nerve transmission, regulating chronic inflammation and promoting quality movement,” said Dr. Zimmerman. “When we go after these core primary sources we find we have the best chance at achieving sustainable change for our patients.”

Make sure to catch the last few weeks of the wildflowers blooming season through mid-May. There are several spots throughout the Valley that offer great opportunities to see the flowers in bloom. “The desert needs to receive rainfall beginning in October and continue through March or April,” Desert Botanical Garden Program Development Manager, Angelica Elliott, said. “The more rain we receive, the better chances of having a wildflower season.” The combination of rainfall and temperatures are the two factors that generally dictate the wildflower season. Elliott says it is always a difficult task to predict what the wildflower season will look like each Spring.
