Adult luxury living Different (luxury) strokes for different folks… By PAULA HUBBS COHEN | PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHEA HOMES ACTIVE LIFESTYLE COMMUNITIES

A

dult luxury living means different things to different people. To some folks, it means a beautiful single-family home in a master-planned community filled with activities and amenities, while to others, it implies sumptuous apartmentstyle living in a resort community that offers various types of intimate neighborhoods with lifestyle assistance levels ranging from none to more intensive. Guess what? Both answers are correct.

Active living and entertaining At Trilogy at Verde River in Rio Verde, the community’s single-family homes are designed for those who desire a luxuriously laidback lifestyle with an emphasis on active living and entertaining. Homes are built with open living areas that seamlessly integrate the kitchen with the gathering spaces, according to Hal Looney, Arizona President, Shea Homes Active Lifestyle Communities. “Certain plans also offer detached casitas,” he added.

Energy-efficient single-level homes At David Weekley Homes in Victory at Verrado in Buckeye, the builder’s single-level homes have great appeal among the active-adult 55+ residents of Victory at Verrado. “Here, you can start living the lifestyle you’ve been dreaming about in a beautiful energyefficient home with stunning golf course homesites,”

said Angela Elliott, Marketing Coordinator for Phoenix and Colorado Springs for David Weekley Homes. Ranging from two to five bedrooms, these homes feature flexible living areas, allowing homebuyers to create a personalized floor plan that blends bright and airy living spaces with upscale finishes and fixtures.

Fitness and social amenities Residents at Victory at Verrado appreciate a lifestyle focused on fitness, biking, hiking and golf as well as mixing and mingling with their new friends and neighbors, Elliott said. “They can enjoy the Vic Restaurant, the Vic Club, the Spa at Victory, the fitness and life-performance training center and an extensive trail system,” she said. “Residents can gather with friends in the clubhouse or community center, grab a workout buddy and hit the

ADVERTISEMENT problem in the first place. Once you have an injury the tendency is for it to fester. The best way to deal with that is to take care of it thoroughly and as soon as possible. Once something becomes chronic meaning it’s there for weeks and months, it becomes an actual progressive disease. It tends to start causing more trouble and more issues and becomes more extensive. And even if it doesn’t hurt more, the condition itself can become more rooted and more significant and more lifestyle altering. Because chronic pain tends to be progressive and because of the fact that we want to try to get the best results possible and minimize troubles in the future, it’s always best to get it treated and to treat it in a way that’s going after the condition and causes, not just the symptoms.

Most people are told when they have pain that they can do physical therapy, they can do pain management or they can have surgery. And oftentimes people are told they don’t have many choices and they just have to live with it. During our free consultation, they have an opportunity to talk and be educated on what other options could help them. It’s a really important process, we’re very detailed in it and many patients have told us that they learn more about their condition with us than they have with any other doctor or clinic they’ve been to. The treatment that we prescribe is noninvasive, it’s comfortable and there’s really no downside to it.

For some people, living with constant chronic pain is a way of life that they have learned to accept. But it doesn’t have to be that way, said Craig Zimmerman, DC, who is board-certified in physical medicine modalities and is also a chiropractic physician. As the founder of LaserTech Back and Pain Relief Center, Dr. Zimmerman helps people throughout Phoenix and Scottsdale who have chronic pain issues get back to the activities they enjoy doing. His highly trained, compassionate team uses low-level laser therapy and other noninvasive technologies to treat pain Q: If you have tried to manage without the use of medications, steroid your pain, but nothing worked, is there another option? injections or surgery. Here, Dr. Zimmerman tells us why getting treated early can improve quality of life and stave off future problems.

Ballet Arizona, Studio Spotlight WHEN: April 20, 7 p.m. WHERE: Dorrance Theatre, 2835 E. Washington St., Phoenix INFO: BalletAZ.org; 602-381-1096 COST: Varies THE SCOOP: Enjoy an intimate rehearsal and experience a behindthe-scenes look at a production of All Balanchine.

A: We focus on treating chronic pain in patients who have tried many other treatments and didn’t get the results they were looking for. We have had success when most of these other treatments have failed. If we take the case there is a good opportunity you are going to get results. Our focus is on treating the problem, the thing that we find is causing your pain instead of only going after the pain which has not been very successful. The way we do that is to spend some time with each individual patient to determine what exactly is causing the problem. We have a free consultation where a patient comes in and sits in a comfortable environment to talk with the doctor and go through the details of their condition. Once we understand what’s been done, what tissues are involved and determine the causes of their condition, we will recommend treatment geared toward treating those specific things.

Q: How long does it take before you see results? A: For most of our chronic cases we don’t have a long-term treatment plan. the treatment recommendation can be done in as few as two times a week. There’s got to be enough frequency and dosage but we give them a range of opportunities to come in and most people can accommodate. Q: Is it ever too late to seek treatment?

it becomes detrimental to not do a surgery or something of that nature. I can tell you that as long as there’s no absolute need to do some other treatment from a medical standpoint, we’ve taken very long-term chronic issues and been able to resolve those. We need to take every opportunity we can to get better and there’s always hope in my opinion.

A: As part of our consultation, one of the things we need to figure out is if a person has let it go so far then

Q: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A POOL, SPA, SWIM SPA AND SPOOL? A: A pool is major construction in your backyard and can be built in many different sizes and shapes. A spa is sometimes built as part of the pool and has a few therapy jets. A swim spa is a fully self-contained product that is specifically designed for exercise, hydrotherapy, relaxation and fun. The heaters are electric and you can use it every day of the year at minimum cost. A pool would cost up to five times as much to heat during the winter months. A spool is a small pool built like a pool but with some therapy jets and maybe some swim-jets.

Q: IS A HOT TUB THE SAME THING AS A SPA? A: No. A hot tub is a self-contained product with multiple hydrotherapy jets positioned to provide specific types of massages in every seat. A hot tub is heated with electric and is cost-efficient and always ready to use. A spa as part of a pool has a few therapy jets and is expensive to heat. Q: HOW MUCH SPACE IS REQUIRED FOR A SPOOL OR SWIM SPA VS A POOL OR SPA? A: Swim spas come in sizes starting at 12-feet by 8-feet so space requirement is minimal. It’s delivered and wired to electric and ready to use a few hours later. A spool can be built in small spaces but the expense can be high because of the labor. Q: WHAT TYPES OF BUYERS/ LIFESTYLES DOES A SPOOL OR SWIM SPA APPEAL TO? A: These products appeal to people with smaller spaces that are looking for something they can use every day of the year that will provide exercise, true hydrotherapy and fun for the family. Edward J. Robson:

An Arizona Icon One of the most respected and legendary names in Arizona real estate By PAULA HUBBS COHEN

E

d Robson grew up in the suburbs of Boston where he was a high school hockey star. Continuing to stay active in hockey, he “went west” for college to Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Banking in 1954. After graduation and marriage, Robson joined the United States Marines. In 1955, he was granted leave to play hockey for Team USA, and the next year, he was selected to become a member of the U.S. Olympic hockey team. Robson completed his final three years in the service with flight school and flying Marine helicopters in Hawaii.

Q&A

“My first job was delivering newspapers at age 11. My best job is what I’m doing right now.”

with Ed Robson Q: DID YOU ALWAYS PLAN TO BE A HOMEBUILDER? A: No, but from the time I was nine years old or so, I planned to own my own business. I wasn’t sure what type of business, but I knew I wanted to be a business owner. Q: HOW DID YOU GET INTO HOMEBUILDING? A: After working at Del Webb and seeing their success with Sun City, I formed my company in 1965 with th three partners. We set out to deliver a Sun City-type community with low prices and that’s how Sun lower La Lakes was born.

Real estate career In 1960, Robson began his real estate career with Coldwell Banker in Phoenix, and shortly thereafter, joined the fast-growing Del Webb Corporation (“I have tremendous respect for Del Webb,” he said.) In 1972, he started his first Robson community — Sun Lakes — located in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Today, Robson oversees active-adult communities in Arizona and Texas including PebbleCreek in Goodyear; Robson Ranch Arizona in the Casa Grande area; SaddleBrooke, The Preserve at SaddleBrooke and SaddleBrooke Ranch, all in and around Tucson; Quail Creek in southern Arizona in Green Valley; and Robson Ranch Texas in Denton, Texas.

Honors and awards A very small sampling of Robson’s numerous accolades includes: • Icon of the Industry, National Association of Home Builders 55+ Housing Council • Builder of the Year, National Association of Home Builders 55+ Housing Council • Hall of Fame, National Association of Home Builders • Grand Award, Home Builders Association of Central Arizona • Entrepreneur of the Year, Arizona State University His favorite award? “Being inducted into my high school hockey Hall of Fame,” he said with a smile.

ED ROBSON PHILANTHROPY Philanthropic efforts by Robson include significant contributions to the American Heart Association, Barrow Neuroscience Tower at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Crisis Nursery, Arizona Humane Society, Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Wounded Warrior Project, Arizona State University, The University of Arizona and Childhelp USA.

Q: W WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABO BUILDING HOMES? A ABOUT A: I love A l providing homes that people lo to live in. Most of our people are love h happ happy with our product and we have a go good reputation of building a quality home. Your reputation is important.

In 2008, the Ed Robson Family branch of the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Phoenix opened its doors, and in 2015 contributions were made to Boys Hope Girls Hope of Arizona. Robson also contributed millions of dollars to his alma mater, Colorado College, for the future on-campus indoor hockey practice facility (the Ed Robson Arena), and to Arizona State University, as Founder for the new Sun Devil Football Stadium.

The bottom line When asked what keeps him going when he could easily kick back and enjoy the fruits of his decades of hard work, he said: “I love life and love what I’m doing. I’m 87 and hope I am still doing okay. Being part of the team and making things work — that’s what brings me to the office every day.”

Q: WHAT GUIDELINES DO YOU LIVE BY? A: Be fair. Treat everyone the same. Family is important. Q: IF YOU COULD BE ANYTHING BESIDES A HOMEBUILDER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? A: I’d be a fisherman and own my own charter boat somewhere in the Caribbean. I love fishing, it’s peaceful.

Ur, eat. Lit, nesequibus qui re, sit quas sit, que doloreperi cus. In nemporerum quat et lacessi nusantibus dem voluptur am et pos as alici conse

Active, resort-style independent living suits today’s modern senior By LEIGH FARR

T

hese days, retirement has taken on a whole new meaning. Active adult communities are designed around the needs of seniors seeking an active lifestyle in a luxurious setting. “Today’s senior wants more than just a comfortable place to retire in,” said Mark Aronauer, marketing director at The Palazzo, a newly renovated adult community in central Phoenix. “They want a community where they can do all the activities they now have time to do and with people who are as excited about maintaining an active lifestyle as they are.”

Luxury living In high-end senior living communities like The Palazzo, residents have the option to live independently while having access to a full calendar of activities and social events. “Sometimes people tell me they are not old enough to move into Independent Living, but when you move into a community like The Palazzo you can tell your friends and family you have your own chef, your own gardener, your own housekeeping staff, your own driver and a full activities staff creating different activities for you to participate in when you want to,” Aronauer said. The Palazzo’s stylish Independent Living apartm ments—among the largest in central Phoenix—feature a full kitchen, roomy closets, a spacious living area and bathroom, a balcony or patio and plenty of storage space. Each unit offers natural lighting and soothing creamtoned colors and a view of the mountains or well-manicured courtyards. Residents can meander through the campus and enjoy the traditional Tuscan-style architecture featuring stacked stones, green and burgundy colors and beautiful archways. Residents are encouraged to take part the community’s liv music and entertainment, wide array of fitness classes, live outings to local area attractions, happy hours and themed parties. On Main Street, residents can enjoy coffee with friends at the bistro, mail a letter at the post office, enjoy a novel in the library, take in a film with friends or stop at the salon to have their hair styled. “We cater to a wide variety of needs, interests and abilities and because we’re a continuing care community we offer the ability for independent living folks to move in while they’re still on the younger side and be able to age in place,” Aronauer said. “Our residents love being able to live an active, social lifestyle while knowing that everything is taken care of for them and if they need a little extra care, it’s always available.

Palazzo

Palazzo’s residents live an active, social lifestyle.

Empowering seniors At Beatitudes Campus, a Phoenix retirement community offering multiple care levels, residents in Independent Living are encouraged to actively participate in shaping their retirement options. The unique approach allows residents to be empowered to play an active role in the decisions that affect their community. “We have a real driving determination and very deeply held value about resident self-determination and having our residents help us design good senior living,” said Rob Bailey, senior vice president. “I’ve never seen anything quite so resident-centric and so powerfully workable.” The result is a community rich with activity and social engagement. With input from residents, the Life Enrichment staff offers more than a hundred clubs, affinity groups and opportunities for service in the community, in addition to a vast array of traditional activities.

Living and learning Many of the activities for residents in independent living focus on the outdoors, whether that means putting on craft shows, flea markets and outdoor fundraisers or working in the community garden. “Our residents raise a lot of produce and then they put it in baskets in each of the Independent Living buildings and anybody who wishes to can take it. It’s good for a lot of things, the engagement, the sense of community and good food gets produced as well,” Bailey said. Bailey is especially excited about the campus’ lifelong learning program which contributes to the “purposeful living” seniors at the Beatitudes have come to expect. The institute, run by residents, hires university-level instructors and offers more than 30 classes. The institute is another example of how residents at Beatitudes take action to shape their environment. “We are able to really enlist the help of residents in helping us see a picture that may be broader than we thought about,” Bailey said. “Their participation is just invaluable.”

H

Door Dash – With more than 2,000 restaurants to choose from, you’re guaranteed to satisfy any craving. But if you just can’t decide, use the DoorDash Delight scoring system, which recommends the best restaurants in your area. UberEats – You trust them to drive you around town, why not trust them to deliver your burger? Postmates – With this service, you can get more than just food. Postmates will pick up just about anything from just about anywhere and deliver it to your door. The service doesn’t partner with restaurants, so the only thing you’re limited by is your location.
