Product: Lumivive

Think UV rays from the sun is the only thing bad for your skin? Think again…especially if you spend the majority of your time locked in on your phone or computer. Consider this: The average American looks at their phone about 45 times a day and spends about 10 hours a day in front of a screen. The blue light emitted from our devices can be particularly damaging because it penetrates deeper than some forms of UV light, down to the third layer of the skin. This can accelerate visible signs of aging, such as dark spots, wrinkles, and loose skin. Fortunately, an innovative skincare product is now available that shields skin from blue light during the day, and recharges the skin’s essential repair process at night. Called Lumivive, it works around the clock to support optimal skin vitality and radiance. And the best part? It doesn’t fade throughout the day or wash off, giving you all-day protection and revitalization.

Procedure: Hydrafacial

If you have 30 minutes to spare, be prepared to have the best facial of your life. In three easy steps, the Hydrafacial uses patented technology to cleanse, extract and hydrate your skin with “super serums” made with nourishing ingredients that create an instantly gratifying glow. Whether you have fine lines and wrinkles, decreased elasticity and firmness, brown spots, oily or congested skin, or enlarged pores, this procedure works on all skin types. You can even tailor your treatment with a booster for your specific skin concerns. For example, minimize the appearance of discoloration with the Bright Alive Boost, or tackle wrinkles with the Growth Factor Boost.

3

Package: Liquid Lift

For the ultimate in facial rejuvenation, treat yourself to the Liquid Lift, a comprehensive package that provides a natural and refreshed look without surgery. Over the span of a series of appointments, you’ll receive collagen stimulation, skin tightening, and facial shaping with the re- ation of lost facial volume. The package includes five syringes of filler and 20 units of Botox, as well as Ultherapy, which kick-start s your skin s collagen and reverses nearly a year’s worth of aging per month over six months. Also included is a ResurFX treatment to improve fine lines and wrinkles. For added measure, tack on a plateletrich plasma PRP facial, which aids in cell turnover.

Whether you're looking for the season’s “it” product, the musthave procedure of the moment, or want to indulge in a full package designed to turn back time, here are the latest and greatest trends in skin care.

Q&A:

Surgical Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

D

r. Raman Mahabir, a board-certified plastic surgeon with awley Plastic Surgery, answers your questions to choosing a surgical facelift to rejuvenate and restore your youthful appearance.

HO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR COSMETIC SURGER Just about anyone at any age could be a good candidate for cosmetic surgery, just as long as they don’t have medical conditions that impair healing, don’t smoke, and do have realistic expectations. When you feel younger than you look, it may be time to consider a facelift. Compared to non-surgical options like injectables, a facelift provides more significant and visible results.

HAT ARE THE RISKS INVOLVED GETTING A FACELIFT

ITH

HO SHOULD OU PREPARE FOR A FACELIFT Optimize your face and neck skin health with a deliberate skin care routine, which we can help customize for you during your consultation. Also, avoid taking aspirin, anti-in ammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding and bruising.

HO LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM A FACELIFT For the first few days after surgery, plan on taking it easy and having someone around to help you. The recovery period is usually short, and stitches are typically removed after the first week. Most people feel comfortable returning to work, driving and other normal activities before the three-week mark. While most people are presentable to the public at that point, it will take two to three months for the face to feel “back to normal” in terms of texture, sensibility and loss of tightness. To optimi e your results, avoid major photography or TV exposure for at least six weeks.

The surgery is performed under a general anesthetic with a board-certified anesthesiologist. While there is a small risk of bleeding, infection, poor wound healing During your consultation, be prepared to discuss and skin loss, pain is our goals typically minimal. HO LONG ITH THE RESULTS LAST Although we can’t guarantee the precise length your results will last, the effects of most facelifts typically last for years. If you’re looking for ways to prolong your facelift results, these tips are a great place to start: Get serious about sun protection Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of signs of aging because

UV rays break down important proteins in your skin. This can accelerate the appearance of lines, wrinkles and sagging skin, which could compromise your facelift results. Wear sunscreen every day and avoid deliberate tanning. This will help protect your skin from sun damage and the accelerated aging that UV ray exposure can cause. Use he righ s in care produc s Good lifestyle habits like wearing sunscreen and eating a balanced diet are just part of maintaining your facelift results. The second half of the equation is using the right topical skin care products for your skin type and concerns. Medical-grade skin care products that contain ingredients like retinoids, peptides and antioxidants can all be great tools for brightening and smoothing the skin. Take advantage of cosmetic treatments Cosmetic treatments can complement your facelift results by acting as an extension of your regular daily skin care regimen. For example, laser resurfacing treatments work by gently

removing the outer layer of skin to reveal the smoother, more youthful-looking skin cells beneath, while Ultherapy can work on the deeper layers of your skin to tighten and increase turnover. Other types of skin rejuvenation treatments include photofacials and chemical peels. If you’ve just recently had a facelift, check with your plastic surgeon about how long you should wait before scheduling any non-surgical cosmetic treatments. You’ll need to give yourself enough time to fully heal first. Nourish your skin from the inside out Another important aspect of maintaining great, healthy-looking skin and prolonging your facelift results is to eat a healthful, balanced diet. Piling your plate with fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains can have a positive impact on the way your skin looks and feels while helping to stave off skin aging. Just as important as eating the right foods is limiting or eliminating the wrong foods from your diet. Dairy, peanuts, soy and gluten can all play a potentially negative role in skin health. Be sure to discuss this with your surgeon.

Beauty from the Inside Out Proper diet and nutrition is key to healthy, glowing skin

J

ust as a nutritious and balanced diet is good for your overall health and well being, it’s also essential to having glowing, radiant skin. That’s because foods get digested and broken down into vitamins, minerals and amino acids your body can use to build healthy skin. Experts say the best diet for your skin is one filled with fresh fruits and vegetables, especially in a variety of colors. The darker and brighter the color, the more nutrients they have.

You are what you eat

When eating for healthy skin, the first thing to avoid is highly processed foods, which often lack the vitamins and minerals your skin needs. Also minimize dairy, foods high in sodium, and sugary foods. Instead, focus on fresh, natural ingredients, like fresh fruits and vegetables—especially those that contain vitamin C, which is critical for new collagen synthesis. Interestingly, some experts recommend eating specifically red, yellow and green vegetables. For instance, red tomatoes are high in lycopene, which helps fight free radicals. Dark green vegetables like kale and spinach also fight free radicals that break down collagen over time. For healthy sources of protein, opt for chicken, beans, eggs, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, sardines and tuna, as well as chia seeds, axseeds and walnuts. Also consider a protein powder to supplement your diet, as well as vitamin C and magnesium, which can help boost the immune system and decrease in ammation.

Foods that heal

What you eat is also important when having cosmetic surgery, particularly when it comes to recovery and healing. Before surgery, eat foods that have anti-in ammatory properties such as berries, fatty fish, avocados, and turmeric, and foods rich in antioxidants like nuts, beans and even dark chocolate. Eliminate processed foods and carbohydrates such as bread, rice and cereal, which are known to promote in ammation. fter surgery, continue eating the same anti-in ammatory and antioxidant-rich foods, but add more protein to your post-op diet. That s because protein is made up of amino acids, which are needed to build new cells and structures throughout the healing process. In addition, immune system cells, which assist in balancing the in ammatory response in the body, are primarily made up of proteins. Collagen is also a protein and is needed for proper scar and skin repair.

Juice, Juice, Baby

To further aid your body in preparing and recovering from plastic surgery, all of our locations offer a variety of organic juices designed to reduce in ammation, improve healing and decrease swelling. Signature blends include: Gorgeous by Gawley Made with pineapple, wheatgrass, coconut water and lemon, this antimicrobial and antioxidantpacked juice aids in resolving bruising, swelling and in ammation. Turmeric Frankincense Water A powerful blend of turmeric root, ginger, lemon, frankincense oil and spring water, this juice promotes cell regeneration and aids in reducing swelling. Flawless Finish Made with grapefruit and cayenne, this juice increases blood ow, stimulates collagen, and is filled with antioxidants.
