It will soon be the holiday season, a time to reconnect with family and friends, and strengthen bonds that have developed over time.
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays as we have the opportunity to show gratitude to those who have been especially kind and giving. As author Melodie Beattie puts it, “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.”
DC Ranch resident Jennifer Gage is filled with gratitude because she is able to realize her dream. After opening a center in Scottsdale where children with Down syndrome could interact and grow together, she is now able to expand the facility and its services. Read how local businesses and individuals have come together to help make the new space a reality. To enhance your holiday entertaining, we have included some wonderful recipes on page 10 from The Country Club at DC Ranch and the Village Health Club & Spa. Get inspired and try something new! We have also compiled a holiday guide which includes everything from local charity galas to family-friendly holiday events. I hope you’ll join me in sharing thanks and gratitude this month. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Community Center access update
esidents often say that Desert Camp and The Homestead Community Centers are the heart and soul of DC Ranch. As such, DC Ranch is committed to creating a welcoming environment, ensuring safety, and preserving the amenities for homeowners, tenants and guests. Beginning in January 2018, new key fob guidelines will be in place. All homeowners and tenants will need to complete a facility usage agreement and key fobs will be renewed on a two-year basis. To ensure uninterrupted usage, homeowners and tenants may sign the agreement and update their key fobs at the Desert Camp Community Center front desk from Jan. 1 through April 5.
home to someone on a short-term basis; a robust seasonally oriented rental market certainly exists in north Scottsdale. DC Ranch Community Standards require a minimum rental period of six months and further provide that any advertisements must reflect the six-month time frame. Community Standards Specialists regularly check vacation websites and send courtesy notices to short-term rentals that are being advertised, knowing that many owners may not be aware of this guideline. Please call 480.513.1500 should you seek additional information, or visit DCRanch.com/Standards.
Artificial grass requires approval With the growing popularity of artificial grass, more homeowners may be thinking about converting their Hybrid Bermuda to artificial grass, especially as their backyard trees mature, often creating large areas of shade. DC Ranch permits artificial grass, but it is limited to backyards only, with prior approval from the Modification Committee. No matter how realistic artificial grass may look, it is not permitted in the front yard landscaping.
This is specified in the DC Ranch Design Guidelines published in 1997, and remains under the jurisdiction of the Covenant Commission. The guideline states that all front yard turf must be a Hybrid Bermuda grass species, and that it must be overseeded with perennial rye annually. Residents who would like to install artificial turf may download a modification form on DCRanch.com and submit it to The Ranch Offices on Market Street for review. The Modification Committee meets bi-monthly and residents should submit all applications at least two days in advance of the next meeting. For more information, please contact the Community Standards Team at 480.513.1500.
2018 Budget and Neighborhood Voting Member election Work on next year’s budgets will be finalized this month as the Community Council and Ranch Association boards ratify the proposed recommendations with a formal vote. The Ranch Association Board of Directors will vote at its Nov. 6 meeting set for 6 p.m. at The Homestead Community Center. The Community Council Board of Directors will vote Thursday, Nov. 9, at its 5:30 p.m. meeting scheduled at Desert Camp Community Center. Prior to Dec. 1, budget and assessment details will be distributed by mail to all residential and commercial property owners. Ballots for the 2018 Neighborhood Voting Member (NVM) election will accompany the budget and assessment material. Election ballots are due back to The Ranch Offices on Market Street by Friday, Dec. 8, at 5 p.m.

What it means to be a Neighborhood Voting Member BY TERRI RAIMONDI | RANCH ASSOCIATION
DC
Ranch strives to be a connected community, and much of that effort starts with residents wanting to get involved. Each neighborhood has a Neighborhood Voting Member (NVM) who acts as an ambassador for his or her neighborhood. When a new neighbor moves in, the NVM hand-delivers a DC Ranch Welcome Basket. For long-time residents, serving as an NVM creates value in knowing the history and growth of the community.

ark LeVally, a 29-year Veteran of the United States Army Special Forces and a DC Ranch resident, looks forward to Veterans Day on Nov. 11 to commemorate the service of those who have served in the military all over the world.
As a Lieutenant Colonel with the “Green Berets,” LeVally was responsible for the operations, planning and execution of Special Forces missions. He spent a year at U.S. Special Operations Command from 2003 to 2004 and deployed to Afghanistan. LeVally then deployed to Iraq for a year from 2007 to 2008 and served another year in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2012. This was followed by two more years at The Joint Special Operations Command at FT Bragg, NC from 2013 to 2015.
Veterans Day honors residents’ service
During LeVally’s time in the service, he was afforded the opportunity to train in incredible locations like Fiji, Thailand and Australia. However, there were many times when Trailblazer Breakfast: Veterans Tribute LeVally was Saturday, Nov. 4 | 8 to 10 a.m. unsure if he would make it home. Desert Camp Community Center
Are you a veteran or do you know someone who has served in the military? Please join your neighbors for a delicious continental breakfast to honor veterans. Place a pin on the map where you or your family member has served, then plant a small American flag on the community center lawn to commemorate their service. All residents are welcome to attend this enhanced Trailblazer Breakfast.
LeVally speaks about his service in the military with enthusiasm but recognizes just how hard it is for military members and their families. His wife, Cynthia, estimates he was deployed for a total of seven years during the 29-year period. Mark and Cynthia moved to DC Ranch with their three children Grace, Eric and John in 2001.
Campaign Medals.
Mark is grateful for neighbors and friends in the community who rallied behind his family during his deployment overseas. “The immediate families are not the only ones affected during war. The entire community feels it because everyone has to pitch in to help,” he said.
LeVally retired in December 2015 but has kept himself busy as a member of several military organizations including the Knights of Columbus. He’s won numerous awards and decorations including The Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation BE A HERO FOR A HERO Medal, Iraq and McDowell Mountain Ranch Afghanistan Saturday, Nov. 11 | 12 to 6 p.m.
Help local wounded Arizona veterans get their mobility back by helping to raise funds for all-terrain wheelchairs. Walt Altmann, Vietnam Veteran and owner of northeast Scottsdale The UPS Stores, his team and The Independence Fund have partnered to provide two severely wounded combat veterans with the tools they need to achieve independence and mobility. This event will feature a silent auction, live music, food and more! All donations will be matched. For more information, please visit donate.beaheroforaheroaz.com.
When asked what he misses most about his time in the service he said, “I miss my buddies. Some of them still serve. Sometimes I feel bad that I’m here and they’re still over there, but I’m happy to be home.” LeVally believes it is important to honor and recognize veterans as well as those who continue to serve our country.

his holiday season, DC Ranch resident Jennifer Gage has several reasons to be thankful. Donations from local businesses is one of them.
In 2015, Gage opened a GiGi's Playhouse in Scottsdale with the help of friends Lesley Robertson and Val Schlesinger; who also have children with Down syndrome.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making it the most common chromosomal condition. There are nearly 6,000 babies with Down syndrome born in the United States each year and more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome in the United States.

DC Ranch Gives: Group Service Project with GiGi’s Playhouse
Sunday, Dec. 10 | 12:15 to 5 p.m. Meet at The Homestead Community Center (Bus leaves promptly at 12:30 p.m.)$5 fee Volunteers ages 13+ are needed This year, DC Ranch is celebrating the holidays with Gigi’s Playhouse at McCormick Stillman Railroad Park by making crafts, decorating cookies, and more. Volunteers, ages 13 and older, are needed to help with check-in and assist with activity stations. Transportation, water and a DC Ranch Gives shirt will be provided. All funds collected will be donated to Gigi’s Playhouse. Please wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Register at DCRanch.com by Friday, Dec. 1. This event is limited to 20 volunteers.
Gage knew she wanted to open the University in time for Kaitlyn’s graduation from high school. Many parents feel at a loss “when the bus stops coming.” GiGi U and GiGi Studio Café is a place where adults will develop life and career skills. Gage is thrilled to expand the Playhouse to add these programs with incredible support and funding from the community. “When we first opened GiGi’s Playhouse in February 2015, I knew the next logical step was GiGi University,” said Gage. GiGi U will have a storefront, GiGi Studio Café, complete with products and cash registers to simulate a retail environment. The products will feature an art component with painting and handmade designs. According to Gage, GiGi U will give individuals with Down syndrome an opportunity to “intern” in a safe and nurturing environment.
The ultimate goal is to prepare individuals with Down syndrome for future employment and provide

Gage would eventually like to see students graduate from their internship to become employed in the local community. Her hope is that they are able to thrive in jobs they are well suited for, and have an interest in.
“This holiday season, I’m thankful for the local community that has rallied behind our vision for GiGi U. Donations are our lifeline,” said Gage. “Local businesses like Candelaria Design, Resource Flooring, Earth and Images, Caruso Construction and many more have donated time and resources to keep the project moving forward. We’re so grateful.” GiGi U is funded primarily through donations, fundraisers and grants and is volunteer-driven. It is slated to open February 2018 and will be located next door to GiGi’s Playhouse at 9160 E. Shea Blvd. All services are offered free of charge.
If you would like to donate or get involved, please contact Jennifer Gage at 602.291.9476.

This recent gift adds to the Parsons’ previous $5 million grant to the Campaign for Girls—the largest single gift ever received by a Girl Scout council nationwide—it allowed for the completion of The Bob & Renee Parsons Leadership Center

“The Girl Scouts are doing incredible work in providing a safe environment for girls to try on their leadership hats,” said businesswoman and philanthropist Renee Parsons. “Once this campaign is complete, the organization will be able to concentrate efforts on its true

Several Scout Troops count DC Ranch girls as members. Local businesses, community supporters and Girl Scout alumnae are challenged to join in their support and visit girlscoutsaz.org/campaign to make a gift today.

fast as when you were zipping around as a toddler but that’s okay. “Your race, your pace,” is a common saying at Fleet Feet. A 5K is a 5K, no matter how long it takes to complete. So how does walking and running improve your health? Running and walking increases your endurance, promotes cardiovascular health, it can elevate your mood with the runner’s high, and helps you control your weight. And there’s a social aspect as well if you run with a group.
Running season is finally here BY LINDA DESGROSEILLIERS | FLEET FEET SPORTS SCOTTSDALE
1
IT’S FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Looking for a healthy activity to do with the family? Running a 5K is an activity that almost anyone can do. At races, you’ll see families dressed in coordinated outfits, right down to the family dog being pushed along in a stroller. You can also make it a friendly competition to see who has the fastest time. Even those who can’t run can get involved by creating signs to greet runners along the route.
2
IT’S GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH
If you’ve ever seen a one-year-old learn to walk, you’ll soon notice she wants to run! Running is natural, even as you grow older. You may not be as

t can be difficult to incorporate a regular workout routine during the holidays, especially when there’s travel involved. DC Ranch Village Health Club & Spa personal Trainer, Colten Tyler, is going to make it easy for you to stay on track this holiday season with the following tips: • Always plan ahead and find out if the hotel has equipment or if there is a gym within a mile. If you fail to plan ahead,

it’s less likely that you will follow through.
• Do not underestimate the benefit of bodyweight training. Don’t overcomplicate things during the busy holiday season. For example, try a circuit of 10 pushups, 20 bodyweight squats and 30 second planks, three to five times each. • Look into investing in some basic travel friendly equipment, such as Suspension Trainer Straps, sliders and foam rollers. TRX makes a door anchor that
So while you’re sweating, remember that it’s all for a good cause. Running for a charity that you care about is a great motivator to keep you moving when the going gets tough.
4
IT BOOSTS YOUR CONFIDENCE
You can’t beat the confidence boost that you get from setting a goal and achieving it. The bonus effect of completing a 5K makes you believe in yourself. For that reason, runners often end up tackling other goals as a result. You know those people you see crossing the finish line at a marathon? A good portion of them began with a 5K. That confidence boost helps them to achieve goals outside of running such as career goals or following their passions. Where can running take you?

YOU CAN ENJOY THE BEAUTIFUL WEATHER Fall is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the cooler weather. You can start by stretching and walking or maybe even train for a December or January 5K. What better way to start the New Year than running to raise money for charity? There are plenty of great runs throughout the Valley to help get you motivated. Not sure where to start? The best thing to do is just lace up your shoes and hit the ground running! You can also participate in the DC Ranch Turkey Trot 5K on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Desert Camp Community Center. works for any door. Many of these tools are easy to find and can be used nearly anywhere.
• Challenge yourself by asking to have your room on a higher floor of the hotel. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. To make it into a cardio workout, try walking or jogging up and down the stairs two to five times. • Make it an adventure and explore your travel destination on foot instead of driving. If you are an outdoor person, find a great hiking trail to explore.
How to stay healthy this holiday season
• Stay hydrated. This can be easy to forget when on vacation but drink at least 64 to 120 ounces of water each day.
• Try to eat 80 percent of meals with a vegetable base, such as a salad or bowl. This can be hard when traveling, but doing so is the best bet to stay on track nutritionally. It can be tricky to stay active and eat healthy while on the move especially around the holidays when tempting comfort food is being served. If you can stay consistent and fit in short workouts around a busy schedule, you can be successful regardless of where you celebrate.
