Still time to enjoy cooler temps Ranch News is a not-for-profit newspaper published monthly by the DC Ranch Community Council to share timely and relevant information with residents. The publications seeks to build community by connecting neighbors through stories and pictures and to offer a product valuable to advertisers. Ranch News celebrates and perpetuates the values of the DC Ranch community.
Mission:
When May rolls around each year I find myself making plans for the summer. Should we have a couple of pool parties? Where’s a new spot we might travel to for cooler weather? And perhaps the biggest question of all—how will we keep the grandkids busy? This issue of Ranch News provides information on youth camps and activities in DC Ranch. Several will be located at Desert Camp and The Homestead community centers and others at The Silverleaf Club and The Country Club at DC Ranch.
Community Engagement Director Jona Davis
The DC Ranch Community Council facilitates a connected and welcoming community that instills pride and a sense of belonging in each DC Ranch resident.
In preparation for Mother’s Day, dads may want to bring the kids to the Community Garden for “Lavender and Lemonade” where they can make a special gift for mom. Homemade gifts are often the most memorable. The DC Ranch Community Garden recently celebrated its one year anniversary. It has benefited residents who love to garden and has also served as a fun venue for several children’s events.

Ranch Association board remains status quo
R
esults of the 2015 board election are final. Incumbents Fred Green, John Henrickson, Stephen Koven and Norm Schuminsky won overwhelming approval for additional two year terms from Neighborhood Voting Members and residents. This is good news for the various endeavors of the current seated board which includes simplification of community standards and
modification of policies and enforcement procedures. The new initiatives are coming together due largely to the cohesion of community leadership. The Ranch Association, Community Council and Covenant Commission are working harmoniously to impact residents in positive ways, from less complicated landscape guidelines to safer streets, paths and trails. A good crowd attended the April 6 Annual Meeting at which the election results were announced.
The Ranch Association Board of Directors updated residents on past and future projects and initiatives at its annual meeting on April 6.
Speed bumps or not?
Subcommittee revisits enforcement
Ranch Association management took its first aim at reducing speeding with the use of electronic, programmable signs on major community-wide thoroughfares. Initial results show a positive impact and more drivers are slowing down. However, some residents think measures like speed bumps should be used; others don’t want to penalize the majority due to the actions of a few. Here are some excerpts of resident comments:
hile the Ranch Association board is making progress on setting the community standards, one group of community leaders and residents is tasked with addressing the violators. The Safety and Security Subcommittee meets weekly to analyze and research the best methods to curb repeat safety offenses. The 10-plus member ad-hoc group is meeting with legal counsel, law enforcement and Ranch management to develop substantial, yet equitable enforcement procedures concerning behavior, community standards and safety. The group completed an extensive review of comparable valley-wide master planned community policies and is now discussing the DC Ranch enforcement platform. Resident input is welcome.
• “The speeding along the Desert Camp loop ... is still overwhelming and without control. Our Board must act and use teeth against this issue by taking some appropriate action that is realistic and practical, just as some other nearby communities have done.”
• “While I was not sure I would like the look of rotating signs, I think they are a good idea. In no way however, should we ever allow speed cameras ...”
• “We witness cars racing up and down at speeds well in excess of the posted limit ... an effective solution would be some strategically placed speed bumps.”
The Ranch Association is still seeking resident input on speeding controls. Share your thoughts at 480.513.1500.
• “I think you’d get better speed control with more stop signs ...”

T
he DC Ranch Community Council is proud to partner with AquaSafe to host a youth swim team at the Desert Camp Community Center pool. AquaSafe also offers swim lessons at their stateof-the-art aquatic facility behind Tom's Thumb Market. AquaSafe Swim School has been in business for more than 11 years. Local owners Gail and Tom Spivey are committed to teaching infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged children, and adults to swim and be safe in and around water. “It has been a privilege to serve the community. We’ve met so many great
families, and it is fun running into them years later,” said Gail Spivey. “In fact, several of our former swimmers are now coaches for us—boy, do we feel old!” Swim lessons significantly reduce the risk of drowning when accompanied by pool barriers and constant adult supervision. In a community like DC Ranch where many homes have swimming pools, parents must be diligent and proactive. AquaSafe provides year-round, small group instruction in its sparkling indoor swimming pool, where parents can watch their children's progress from the comfortable viewing gallery. The instructors are experienced, caring professionals who have a passion for

With the added adjustment of fitting in with peers—Mira journeys through the challenge of having to wear new glasses. Childsplay, Arizona’s professional theatre company for young audiences and families, will address the matters of growing up in this humorous new play Saturday, May 9, at the Community Council's Family "Play" Date at The Homestead Community Center.
“In middle school I was the girl who wore glasses and often felt like an oddball,” Negri said. “Girls Who Wear Glasses is a play written for the middle school me; for kids who are struggling every day to figure out life with the help of family, friends, and teachers.” Suddenly no longer interested in popularity, Mira has to decide who she really wants to be. With the help of her glasses, she starts to clearly stand up for herself. The play is recommended for children ages 7 and up. Kids are encouraged to invite their friends. Tickets are $1 per person and can be purchased on DCRanch.com. Girls Who Wear Glasses is the featured production for the May 9 Family Play Date at The Homestead Community Center.

Hydration is critical:
Ways to safely explore the Preserve during summer BY JACE MCKEIGHAN | MSC STEWARD AND DC RANCH RESIDENT
Summer brings many changes to the Sonoran Desert, most notably the heat. After months of enjoying outdoor living, summer requires desert dwellers to adjust their hiking habits. With planning and preparation you can still get out and enjoy the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Every year the City of Scottsdale and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is called to assist individuals and dogs suffering from dehydration and exposure to the heat. These are conditions that can and should be avoided. Plan accordingly Both humans and dogs will function better in the early morning, while temperatures are lower and the sun is less direct. Just a couple of hours can mean a tremendous difference in conditions. If you plan on a five-mile hike at 6 a.m. and oversleep, consider rescheduling your hike for another day or taking a shorter route. Hydration is critical If you plan on being active outside, start hydrating as early as the day before. At minimum, drink 1 to 2 quarts in the hour or two before you head outside.
Once on the trail, for every hour you hike, you should drink about 1 quart of water. A general rule of thumb—every 30 minutes eat a little and drink a lot. It’s a good idea to stick to your planned route. Detours or unexpected events can leave you short of water if you are not careful. Take your hydration seriously. Keep your dog well hydrated too If you are thirsty, your dog is probably even thirstier. Bring ample water on the trail and give them plenty of rest and opportunities to drink. Dogs do not deal with heat as efficiently as humans and great caution and care is required in summer conditions. Even if you and your pet are properly hydrated, you can still experience heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Be aware of the symptoms for yourself—elevated heart rate, feeling cool and clammy, dizziness or nausea, cramping or disorientation. Likewise, if your dog is constantly seeking shade or is reluctant to move, they are likely struggling with the sun and heat as well. If you or your pet experience any of these symptoms: find shade, hydrate, make a wet compress, rest, and if symptoms worsen, call 911. Be prepared and stay safe this summer. I’ll see you on the trails —Jace
