This month’s cover story is going to the dogs. DC Ranch recently launched a PUP (Pick Up Poop) program, which is a fun and educational way to help keep the community safe and clean for all residents and their pets. Learn more about it on page 10.
As we reach the peak of summer, we have some helpful tips on keeping your pet safe in the heat. If you like dogs and cats but aren’t able to make a long-term commitment to care for one, a local animal shelter may have the perfect solution on page 10. Also in this issue you'll find that just because it’s summer doesn’t mean the fun slows down at DC Ranch. Comedy Night at The Homestead is back by popular demand. This summer comedy series for adults brings some of the Valley’s top comedians right here to the cool indoors of The Homestead Community Center. For families, we have Dive-In Movies at the Desert Camp pool. You can find all the information you need on pages 6 and 7.
Enjoy the dog days of summer!

Ranch Updates Ranch Association officer positions and committee appointees announced
T
he newly-elected Ranch Association Board of Directors conducted its first regularly-scheduled meeting May 7. The first item of business was to elect officers for the term commencing May 2018 through the Annual Meeting in 2019, which is usually in early April. Incumbent
Susan Grace will serve as president, Elizabeth Kepuraitis as vice president, Mike Esparza will again serve as treasurer, Dr. Phil Geiger as secretary. Fred Green, Vince Durocher and Stephen Koven round out the Board and will serve as directors at-large. The Modification Committee Charter and appointees were also reapproved at the May meeting. The charter is voted upon annually by the Board.
Monsoon and summer landscape tips
Monsoon season officially begins in early July when heavy rains, lighting and flash flooding can occur as humidity levels rise. Many homeowners tend to overwater this time of year, thinking more is better in the triple-digit heat, but the extra humid weather actually means homeowners can water less frequently. Reduce turf watering from every other day to every three days. Drip systems, used to water desert-friendly plants, can extend to every seven to ten days in between watering. Pots and annual blooms should be saturated daily. Do not allow water to collect; keep
R
gutters and drains clear and remove standing water from saucers as these can be breeding grounds for mosquitos. DC Ranch Landscape crews will stay atop of storm cleanup, clearing paths and trails, and removing downed trees in common area and streetscapes where the Ranch Association is responsible. There are two wet crossings that should be avoided during monsoons where water crosses the road carrying with it rock and debris. They are located at Gilded Perch and 102nd Street, and between Siesta Lane and Clubhouse Drive, both in the Silverleaf Village.
Javelina proof your yard
esidents share the desert with many species of amazing wildlife, but the omnivorous javelina can be a pest by ravaging gardens, plants and flowers. Many times, they dig up plants for no apparent reason and they tend to forage on whatever is available. If you’re tired of replanting your beautiful blooms and cleaning up the mess left behind, try picking a javelina-resistant plant species. The DC Ranch Community Standards team has assembled a list of DC Ranch permitted plants that javelina are less likely to eat, however the only true guarantee is through an approved wall or fence. Call The Ranch Offices on Market Street for additional information at 480.513.1500. Landscape and maintenance crews are hard at work this summer. Exterior wood trim and shutters, garage doors and front courtyard iron fencing will be getting a fresh coat of paint in Market Street Villas. Trees are being replaced in various neighborhoods including Arcadia at Silverleaf, Camelot, the Haciendas, Desert Haciendas, The Estates, Horseshoe Canyon, Park and Manor, Terrace Homes East, and in parks and streetscape areas off of Windgate Pass. New irrigation controllers are being installed in park and common areas
of Horseshoe Canyon and in the Haciendas. Turf reduction and irrigation system improvements are also planned for Market Street Villas while the irrigation system in the main park of Park and Manor will be redesigned and sod areas improved. Additional landscape improvements are also scheduled for Ethel’s Garden, in Terrace Homes West, and in Rosewood. Crews will continue to monitor for any monsoon damage as the season kicks in the first week of July.
Lazy, hazy days of summer are busy for DC Ranch
would you rate the security services provided at DC Ranch? Look for an email survey later this 2018 Security Survey How summer that will help gauge resident opinion to let us know what’s working, and what can be improved.
This data will also assist with the security services contract which will be competitively bid this fall. But you don’t need to wait for the survey, email Communitysafety@dcranchinc.com, to let us know your thoughts. On October 24, residents are encouraged to attend a Safety and Security Forum that will include DC Ranch’s current safety partners Allied Universal and Safeguard (the gate maintenance provider). The program will also include a special presentation on home safety tips from Scottsdale Police Community Engagement Officer Jason Glenn. Look for more information and details in the coming months.

DC Ranch breaks sales record
Did you hear that DC Ranch broke the record for the highest individual home sale in the Valley in March? Well, it happened again with an $18.8 milliondollar sale now on the books. All this attention begs one to stop and wonder … why is DC Ranch more desirable than other Scottsdale communities? While you may have a favorite reason, here are the most popular reasons:
• DC Ranch has a fabulous location. It’s in the heart of what makes Scottsdale special—fine dining, world class events such as the WM Phoenix Open and Barrett Jackson, and a plethora of hiking opportunities right in your own backyard. DC Ranch’s proximity to the 101 freeway allows residents to head in any direction within minutes. • DC Ranch has a wide-range of housing options. From apartment living that appeals to young professionals, to empty nesters wanting to downsize into a condominium within walking distance of dining and shopping, to families who desire front porches for visiting with neighbors or living near their child’s school. There are homes surrounding lush golf courses as well as massive estate homes—all can be found within the boundaries of DC Ranch.
• Life in DC Ranch is interesting and enjoyable. Its unique governance structure provides for the Community Council to foster connectivity between residents by hosting events, activities and programs where shared interests and friendships grow. • DC Ranch was designed to stand the test of time. The community has remained relevant throughout its 20-year history. It is well maintained, financially stable, and committed to quality. It supports the delicate synergy between residential living and its natural desert environment.
School Supply Drive benefitting United Way
Help children get prepared for a bright school year with new school supplies. Last year, residents donated more than 600 school supplies for the drive. This year, the goal is to collect 1,000 items. All donations will benefit Valley of the Sun United Way which assists students attending Title I schools in the Phoenix Metro area. Donations can be dropped off during business hours to Desert Camp Community Center and The Homestead Community Center from July 2 to Aug. 3. Monetary donations are accepted; checks must be made out to Valley of the Sun United Way. Tax receipts available. For more information, call Devin Haggerty at 480.538.3544.

DC Ranch also hosted “Yappy Hours” to launch the initiative. Neighbors and their pets were invited to enjoy treats and sweets while they learned about the program. Make sure your pet is stylish in their DC Ranch gear and take the PUP Pledge today!
Local animal shelter offers residents a chance to foster pets
I
Spring and summer months are typically referred to as “kitten season” because of the vast number of homeless kittens arriving at Valley shelters. Many of those felines are too small to be put up for adoption and require a temporary home where they can remain until they're big enough for spay or neuter surgery.
While the kittens are growing, their foster family is responsible for providing socialization, cuddling and TLC. Foothills Animal Rescue provides medical care (vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery) and

whenever possible, the agency also sends foster families home with supplies such as pet food. Fostering is a great activity for the entire family. Just ask Foothills Animal Rescue foster, Ginny Verhamme. Ginny and her family have fostered more than 50 dogs for Foothills over the past few years. “We love animals, so fostering made perfect sense. It also helps our children learn from a young age why it is so important to be involved in community service,” said Verhamme.
While kitten fosters may be the most immediate need, Foothills Animal Rescue is looking for fosters for a variety of pets. This could include adult dogs and cats that are recovering from an illness, or pets that need temporary homes until space becomes available at the shelter.
Many potential foster families fear that it will be too difficult to surrender their foster pet back to the shelter. Verhamme offers a bit of advice, “Although it is hard to let each foster pet go back to the shelter, it is comforting to know they are going to good homes. The love and joy that each animal uniquely provides is incredible.” To become a foster family for Foothills Animal Rescue, simply complete a volunteer application online at foothillsanimal.org. From there you'll attend an orientation and learn the next steps.
If you are unable to foster but still want to help, consider purchasing an item or two off of the Wish List that Foothills Animal Rescue has through Amazon. The Wish List is also available at foothillsanimal.org and contains items that can be used by foster families when caring for Foothills̕ pets.

Keep your pets safe in the heat
V
alley of the Sun temperatures are heating up and, while summer is a fun time for the entire family, don’t forget to keep your four-legged friends out of harm’s way.
Hyperthermia is a rising elevation in body temperatures above the normal range and dogs are equally at risk as humans. Pets need extra care in the hot summer months due to their fur coats. The Arizona Humane Society receives 40 to 50 calls per day for rescue services and suspected animal cruelty. Nearly half of these calls are related to heat.
Make sure your best friend stays cool with the following summer safety tips from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA): • • • • •
•
• • •
•
• •
Visit the veterinarian to get tested for heartworm Never leave your pet in a hot parked car Avoid direct contact with hot pavement Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool Give your pet plenty of fresh, clean, cool water throughout the day Make sure your pet has a shady spot to escape the sun Know the symptoms of overheating which include heavy breathing, drooling, increased heart rate and even collapse Never use fireworks around pets Trim long-haired dogs; but don’t shave them as the coat is a layer of protection Be mindful when hiking with your dog. Bring canine-friendly snacks, plenty of water and a bowl Don't assume a tree or bush provides enough shade, or that a metal bowl left in the sun will hold a day’s worth of water. Do keep your dog inside as much as possible during the day. Too much time outdoors can lead to everything from sunburn to dehydration, if not heat exhaustion.
Your pet will be around to love you for years to come with the help of these simple tips.

Food takes flight at new hotspot
New north Scottsdale restaurant PNPK is flying high. BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
T
he venue, named in homage to nearby Pinnacle Peak Mountain, is now open on the Southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak and focused on offering flights of nearly everything. “The menu is meant to offer a little something for everyone—and we encourage sharing,” said owner Kellie Pruitt.
A stand-out on the menu is the option to mix and match more than a dozen craft sliders, each available on brioche bread, gluten-free bread or in lettuce wraps. Just some of the mouth-watering munchies include a short rib French dip, bangers + mash with Schreiner’s locally made sausage and garlic mashed potatoes, and a crispy hot fried chicken with a house made spicy aioli sauce. PNPK also offers a full bruschetta flight menu, where guests can choose any three options from a list of 11 choices that run the gamut from garlic hummus with cucumber and tomatoes to sautéed mushrooms with melted brie to smoked salmon with herbed goat cheese, red onion and capers. During happy hour, you can order the bruschetta —or mix and match it—for just $3 each. But PNPK doesn’t stop there.
There are also a bevy of salads, side dishes, charcuterie and signature entrees available. During happy hour, many of their shareable plates are offered at just $6.

“On the drink side, we kept the idea of flights in mind, developing both craft beer and wine flights—and yes, we even have a bubbles flight,” said Pruitt. Happy hour deals include wine flights and craft beer flights from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
“My husband and I loved Rock & Vine Bar & Grill, which back in the day was tucked into a cozy enclave in La Mirada shopping center in north Scottsdale. When I heard the owners wanted to sell in 2014, I just went for it,” said Pruitt.
In July 2016, Pruitt’s daughter Harleigh passed away unexpectedly at just 17 years-old. Understandably this took her away from the day-today duties of running a restaurant. “Earlier this year, I knew I either needed to close or do something new, in part to throw myself into something creative to help myself heal,” said Pruitt. “PNPK has been transformational for me.”
PNPK is more than 2,600-squarefeet, has a dog-friendly patio, and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

states at DC Ranch resident Tanaha Hairston is a successful business owner and consultant. Hairston holds a degree in Computer Science and Engineering as well as an MBA from Thunderbird School of International Management. But her journey to higher education and entrepreneurship wasn’t exactly a walk in the park.
After marriage at a young age, she obtained her MBA while raising young children and facing a new transition—life as a single parent. This was not an easy task; the college admission requirements were stringent and there were many obstacles, but she never gave up. She’s traveled the world a few times over to destinations such as London, Budapest, Ireland, Austria and Italy. But, she credits her international MBA with broadening her horizons about the world at large.
“It was amazing how the global MBA program unlocked my awareness of how people live around the globe, so different—yet also so similar. I have such an enlightened mind and spirit now—and I’m truly thankful,” commented Tanaha. After obtaining her MBA, and while the children were adjusting to living in dual households, she launched her first business, Derivations Skin Care, from her home. This turning point in her life was driven by her desire to re-enter the business world while enjoying as much time as possible with her children.
Tanaha sold Derivations Skin Care and started a second business, Blended Pure, a natural haircare product line for women with curly hair—all through online sales and while working from home between countless commitments with the kids. However, it’s her newest role as a business consultant that she’s really passionate about—because she’s helping business owners to optimize their positive contribution to society while growing their top and bottom lines through exciting new technologies. It’s the perfect combination of her computer engineering background and business training. “I love adding value to businesses through consulting on new product development, analyzing data, enhancing their digital interface, driving digital ads and leveraging technology to increase reach, growth and impact.“

DC Ranch Pioneers BY NIA HUGHES | DC RANCH COMMUNITY COUNCIL
The fourth of July will mark the 20th anniversary of the day Terry McDonnell moved to DC Ranch—and he is as grateful to live in the community today as he was back in 1998.
As the owner and publisher of Business Real Estate Weekly, or BREW, a newsletter that covers business and real estate activity in Arizona, McDonnell could have chosen to live anywhere in the Valley. “I was familiar with DMB Associates and their standards of excellence and DC Ranch seemed like a natural fit for me at the time. In addition to the Camelot home that I have owned for 20 years, I have invested in five other residences in DC Ranch, including a custom home in Arcadia at Silverleaf,” said McDonnell.
Terry McDonnell people in all stages of life, from traditional single family homes to condos. There are also amazing path and trail systems for active families. He picked a barren plot of land when there were no models, designs or elevations to choose from. He had faith in DMB’s vision.
According to McDonnell, DC Ranch has something to offer
The Chicago native initially moved to Arizona in the early 1970’s and made his home in Scottsdale. The city has grown leaps and bounds since that time—and so has DC Ranch. McDonnell feels grateful to have raised his son Connor, who will be 12 this month, in the safety and security of the community. “I grew up in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park where we’d have these fun block parties. The way that DC Ranch is designed with the grass parks, it reminds me of being back home in Oak Park,” said McDonnell.
“My son can play outside and ride his bike and feel completely safe. It gives me such peace of mind to have that security. Where can I go that’s better?” he said.
Similar to previous Pioneers, McDonnell has served the community in different capacities over the years. He was on the original committee that helped write the community’s mission statement. Nearly 20 years ago, a team DC Ranch Mission Statement: of eight residents gathered to discuss why Architectural integrity and they wanted to live in DC Ranch and what design, maintenance of roads they deemed important for the community. and security, and developing a sense of connectedness The mission statement still represents among residents are integral what DC Ranch stands for today. components of the DC Ranch experience. And though these three operational areas are certainly interconnected, they are distinct services that require a range of expertise. As a result, three governance entities oversee the delivery of the three separate services.

All three entities work toward the same goal: to serve residents and create a community that is beautiful, functions well, and creates a deep sense of belonging.
In the past, he’s also represented his neighborhood village as an NVM, helping to provide a voice for his fellow residents. “DMB and DC Ranch have absolutely delivered on what they promised in the original mission statement. We can see the vision realized and it’s more than we could’ve hoped for,” smiled McDonnell.

he Conservancy is grateful to the collective group of more than 650 volunteer stewards who protect and maintain the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
Stewards provide the community opportunities to learn about the value, significance, and wonders of the Preserve through interactive tours and trailside learning.
Perhaps the best benefit people get from volunteering is the satisfaction of incorporating service into their lives and making a difference in their community. The intangible benefits alone— such as pride, satisfaction and accomplishment—are worthwhile reasons to serve. In addition, when we share our time and talents, we: • • • • •

Solve problems Strengthen communities Improve lives Connect to others Transform our own lives
The past two decades have seen a growing body of research that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social ones. This research, presented by Corporation for National Community Service, has established a strong relationship between volunteering and health.
Those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer.
If you would like to join the team and serve the community via a variety of steward programs, visit McDowellSonoran.org or call the Conservancy office at 480.998.7971 to learn about the application process and reserve your spot at an upcoming New Steward Orientation. Cheers to sharing your time, talent and treasure with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.
