One of DC Ranch’s community values is Lifelong Learning.

As community stakeholders, we believe in continuous learning and personal growth as a lifelong endeavor. Through high quality community-based educational programs and relationships with educational institutions, we value opportunities that provide new experiences and broaden our knowledge.

In this month’s cover story, we highlight several adult learning opportunities both here at DC Ranch as well as at nearby locations. From a cheese making class at Sur La Table to a star gazing session at the Desert Botanical Garden, read about the variety of offerings to enrich your mind and imagination. Also this month, we will kick off a series of articles to enhance your understanding of the many amenities and services offered as part of living in DC Ranch. The 2016 Ranch-wide resident interest survey identified information that some residents were not familiar with.

I hope you’ll join me this month in expanding our minds and finding new interests!

Ranch Updates DDC Meeting Aug. 1 The City of Scottsdale will receive a project proposal for the Desert Discovery Center (DDC) concept from the consultant team on July 31. The report will be posted on the City’s website, ScottsdaleAZ.gov.

Several commission and design review meetings are planned in August and September, culminating with a City Council Study Session on Sept. 26. The meetings are public and residents may attend. A Community Open House is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. 2nd Street. Two times are offered—

11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or 4 to 7 p.m. Both will include a short presentation. Residents are encouraged to attend either of the sessions to learn more about the project proposal. In addition, DDCS will host a presentation for DC Ranch residents only in September to review the proposal. Look for upcoming communications on the date and time.

A schedule of the upcoming meetings, as well as agendas and presentation materials will be available on ScottsdaleAZ.gov as they become available.

Don’t over-irrigate during the hot summer months

T

he heat is on, but hotter temperatures don’t necessarily mean you need to use more water. Over-irrigating is a common practice when thermostats hit triple-digits, especially during monsoon season when humidity levels also rise. Too much water can harm plants, damage stucco and retaining walls, and increase utility bills. Plants that are over-watered will have yellow leaves and new shoots that are wilted. Overwatering may also cause the appearance of effervescence on stucco. Border and retaining walls may also crack or fail.

Drip emitters are typically used around the canopy line of trees and shrubs and are sized in gallons or liters per hour. If you don’t know the output of your drip emitters, take one to an irrigation supply or home and garden store for help. Desert-adapted plants can go one to three weeks in

between deep-root watering—one-foot for small plants and ground cover, two-feet for shrubs and three-feet for trees. A soil probe or long screwdriver can help determine the depth.

Sprinkler systems are used on turf areas and, if watered properly during normal seasonal highs, Bermuda hybrids should not be mushy, puddled or musty-smelling. A typical watering schedule for grass might be 30 minutes every three days, but residents should conduct their own water test to determine the output of their irrigation system. Information on watering times can be obtained on the Arizona Cooperative Extension website: ag.arizona.edu/azmet.

Reduce irrigation during periods of high humidity and rain. Seasonal adjustments may reduce landscape watering 30 to 50 percent which means a savings on your water bill as well. Visit wateruseitwisely. com for a helpful guide on desert watering.

Initiating change for common good

Do you have a suggestion for a stop sign, new tree, playground amenity or new service? These types of requests should be proposed to your Neighborhood Committee. A Neighborhood Committee’s primary purpose is to consider requests from neighborhood owners for additional levels of service, or a request for special services within the neighborhood. The Neighborhood Committee reviews the request and determines if a recommendation to the Ranch Association Board is in order. If the Board supports the request or proposal, then it is voted on by the neighborhood’s owners to

Neighbors help keep DC Ranch beautiful

Last fall, DC Ranch provided residents with a simplified version of its Community-wide Standards. The booklets include photos for easy understanding of how to maintain your home and landscape. This spring, staff began working with residents to identify areas for improvement. The response has been extremely positive. Homeowners took action more than 90 percent of the time after receiving a courtesy letter. Data for DC Ranch Standards for Homes are impressive with an average first letter success rate of 92 percent when courtesy notices are sent. Not surprisingly, stucco and paint are the main areas of concern, as the community nears its 20-year anniversary mark.

Courtesy notices for Standards of Landscape have also yielded an average first letter success rate of 92 percent. Data shows that weeds and offshoots are the most common occurrences. Resident input is always welcome and the team is available to help with information and guidance.

see if implementation and costs are of interest to them. A majority vote is required to pass the initiative. The Neighborhood Committee process is intended to be engaging and inclusive and establishing a committee is easy. Market Street Villas in the Desert Camp Village has recently undertaken this endeavor and is reviewing several requests. They got their committee up and running in only two weeks!

“It involves neighbors working with neighbors to develop ideas and bring about change as a community of interested and informed owners. We have already seen that once folks get excited about the ideas they are much more apt to appreciate other perspectives and work toward common good,” said Neighborhood Voting Member, MJ Hall.

Many residents were unaware that DC Ranch has a Community Garden and New Resident Welcome Program. Read below for more details about these two amenities and how they contribute to the DC Ranch experience.

WHAT IS THE DC RANCH COMMUNITY GARDEN? Created in 2014, the DC Ranch Community Garden at Copper Ridge School is located on the northwest side of the school near the ball fields. The Community Garden is a collaborative effort between DC Ranch and Copper Ridge School. The Garden supports both student curriculum-based projects and resident gardening. Currently, there are 44 irrigated plots available for lease. Its design reflects traditional farm and garden aesthetics and is devoted to sustainable organic practices. The Garden also includes demonstration beds, a shaded area, a solar powered irrigation control system and a communal tool shed. Tyler Storey, the DC Ranch Garden Coach, holds Garden Hours on two Saturdays each month, usually

from 8 to 10 a.m., and plans a Garden Workshop on one of those Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. Check the DCRanch. com calendar for specific information; summer hours may vary.

Residents are encouraged to attend the Saturday sessions to ask Tyler all their gardening questions. In addition, DC Ranch volunteer gardeners are often there several mornings during the week. An application to lease a garden plot can be found on the DCRanch.com website under Life at DC Ranch. If you have questions about the Community Garden, please contact Community Engagement Director Jona Davis at 480.538.3582 or email jona. davis@dcranchinc.com.

It’s time

to say farewell to summer and hello to a new school year. The first day of school sets the tone for the remainder of the year, so it’s essential to set your child up for success.

Back to school

What teachers wish you knew

It can be difficult for children and parents to get back into a regular routine after the carefree months of summer, but teachers stress the importance of a schedule prior to the first day. To help your children get off to a productive start, teachers and faculty at Copper Ridge School offered advice on how to make this school year the best one yet.

“One thing I wish parents understood about the beginning of the school year is that learning begins on day one. It’s important that your child is in attendance, with school supplies, ready to learn,” said Erin Corsi, second grade teacher. Teachers suggest that parents introduce children to an earlier bedtime and structured learning schedule in the weeks leading up to the first day of school. Parents can ward off the infamous "summer slump" by slowly increasing the amount of homework and reading time.

“Kids should start waking up and going to sleep as if it’s a school night. Also, add in 15-20 minutes of reading or workbook exercises to rev up their brains,” said Nicole Buongiorno, sixth grade English Language Arts teacher.

Parents should sit down with their children to set goals for the new school year and discuss the actions necessary to help them achieve those goals. Preschool and Kindergarten students need love, encouragement and support to help them with nerves associated with the big day.

“We've got this!” is an age-appropriate cheer Emily D’Ambrosio, Pre-Kindergarten teacher, suggests for parents.

Older children need encouragement but may also need to brush up on their reading and math skills or risk falling behind. “I would suggest that students need to be fluent in their math facts and the application of these math facts required for the grade level the students are about to enter,” said Kris Picard, Learning Resource Center teacher.

Parents should sit down with their children to set goals for the new school year and discuss the necessary actions to help them achieve those goals. A new school year doesn’t have to be stressful. With adequate preparation, a positive attitude and a natural curiosity to learn, a successful and productive school year is easily attainable. Teachers want you to know that they are there to help your child with all of their learning needs.

“The best thing a parent can say to their child is his or her teacher cares about them very much and they can feel comfortable coming to their teacher for anything at all,” said Karen Sacks, Kindergarten teacher.

“For those that practice yoga regularly, it gives the experience of needing to work with different muscles to establish and hold the pose. So there are many benefits that all come together in Aqua Yoga,” said Rhonda Vroman, one of the class instructors.

There are many advantages to Aqua Yoga, including an improvement in balance and flexibility that strengthens deep core muscles. The custom water yoga sequence is low impact making it helpful for those with limitations, however, anyone who desires to get deeper into their posture and yoga practice will benefit from this class. Aqua Yoga also relieves stress and pain associated with aching joints due to arthritis, hip and knee replacements, pregnancy and surgery.

“I had a student who had difficulty climbing stairs because of physical limitations. She came to a class and said, ‘Oh my gosh, I had no idea I could do this with my body.’ So for some, it’s a brand new experience that yes, in this environment, I can do this,” said Vroman.

Water enhances the traditional yoga experience and is often used in mediation practice to calm an overactive mind and encourage the feeling of weightlessness. Traditional yoga poses like plank, chaturanga, and cobra are adapted to the water and often use the side wall for balance. Props like kickboards and noodles may also be used while floating in poses like savasana. Register online at DCRanch.com. Its location near the Gateway Trailhead of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve led to some special design elements. If you like to hike or mountain bike, you can hit the trails in the morning, then store your gear (bike racks are available, too) and freshen up at the outside locker and bathroom area adjacent to the new 13,000-square foot building. Or have a bite and then head out into the hills.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, swing by soon. The DC Ranch Women’s Club is headed there for happy hour on Aug. 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. Join them!
