DC Ranch kicks in to high gear in October.
It marks the start of another exciting season of events and activities for residents of all ages. The largest event, Tour de Scottsdale, is on Oct. 8 at Market Street. It raises funds for The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, with more than $500,000 donated to date. Even if you aren’t a cyclist, it is fun to cheer on the participants—who are a spectacular sight in their brightly colored biking clothes—and then enjoy the live music and an expo in Market Street Plaza.
In this issue, we feature a long-time DC Ranch resident who has ridden in the Tour several times. Learn why he loves the ride so much and what attracts him to return to the pack every year.

For sci-fi enthusiasts, mark your calendars to attend Fire in the Sky, a presentation where Arizona resident Travis Walton will recount his alien abduction which was later adapted into a major motion picture. It's the perfect adult lead-in to Halloween!
No matter what your interest, we hope you’ll take advantage of the many opportunities to get out and engage with neighbors and new friends this month.

Oct. 2 | 6-7:30 p.m. Agenda item for Ranch Association Board of Directors Meeting Nov. 6 Deadline for Candidate Statements to be received at The Ranch Offices on Market Street by 5 p.m. Candidate statements may be mailed, faxed to 480.513.1505 or emailed to Terri.Raimondi@dcranchinc.com.
Overseeding Begins in October
Nov. 20 NVM election ballots are mailed to residents with the 2018 Monthly Assessments. Dec. 8 Ballots are due by 5 p.m. at The Ranch Offices on Market Street. Dec. 18 2018 NVMs will be announced on DCRanch.com. Jan. 1 New NVM one-year term begins.
Ranch is managed by a unique governance structure that offers the highest quality of customer service and helps to sustain high property values. It starts with a grass-roots effort of neighbors helping neighbors. The community is divided into 43 different voting sections headed by volunteers called Neighborhood Voting Members or NVMs. These individuals are just like you. They embrace their neighborhood. They form lasting friendships. They are guardians of the lifestyle at DC Ranch.
NVM positions are perfect for newcomers wanting to get involved or long-term residents that want to share knowledge and historical perspectives. All neighborhoods in DC Ranch should be represented by an NVM as they are the designated voice on matters requiring a vote, such as election of the Ranch Association Board of Directors—perhaps the time is right for you to become an NVM? Typical tasks include greeting new neighbors with a welcome gift and surveying neighbors on proposed new policies or changes.
The NVM election kicks off this month. Candidate forms are posted online at DCRanch.com/ governance. Candidates must own property in the neighborhood that they wish to represent and may only serve one neighborhood during the one-year term. New NVMs receive training and tools, and almost any schedule can accommodate serving in this capacity.
Several special NVM-only events are held throughout the year to make volunteering all the more fun! If you are a people person that likes connecting with others, please think about becoming an NVM. Call Terri Raimondi, Communications Manager at 480.419.5308 to hear more about this special way to give back to your community.
The greenbelts, parks and the community center lawns will soon sport lush, velvety green grass thanks to the hard work of the DC Ranch landscape crews. The crew will be busy scalping, overseeding with winter perennial rye and watering to produce dark green winter turf—perfect for upcoming holiday parties and get-togethers. Residents are asked to please follow posted signs in all parks while the new grass takes root. Weather-permitting, all areas should be ready in time to use for Halloween festivities.

Inspiration to grow your garden this fall BY TYLER STOREY | DC RANCH GARDEN COACH
F
or the gardeners of yesteryear who lived in colder climates, gardening inspiration came from winter catalogues. Huddled around the kitchen table while the wind blew over the snow outside, the gardener could look at all the fresh bright pictures and plan what novelties and stalwarts would fill the garden beds come spring.
While gardeners in the Valley of the Sun can plant and garden year-round, it’s still worthwhile to step back from the six-pack plants at the local store and spend some time looking at catalogues for inspiration. Here are three great catalogues to help find the best seeds:
Victory Seed has over 31 varieties of lettuce alone, each one with pictures and a description, and more than 156 different tomatoes—and that’s just the red kind! victoryseeds.com
Burpee Seed Company has been in business almost 150 years and has inspired generations of gardeners. Their catalogue has 133 varieties of root vegetables, almost all of which will thrive in an Arizona garden. burpee.com
Johnny’s Selected Seeds not only has excellent seeds, but their online catalogue has pictures that will definitely inspire. You may want to try every one of their 43 selections of carrots, just because you didn't know carrots could be so beautiful. johnnyseeds.com
Whether you try these or others, peruse through catalogues and get inspired this fall.

DC Ranch resident prepares for Tour de Scottsdale
TdS Tips
Hydrate Drink at least one large bottle of water per hour when riding. If it is hot or you are working hard, the minimum should be 1.5 bottles per hour. Without adequate hydration, your body will suffer severe reductions in performance which can be damaging overall. Many people use a hydration formula mixed with water which is especially important in hot weather or when riding at a demanding pace. You should always carry two water bottles on the bike and one in a jersey pocket for long rides. It’s also important to practice the art of drinking safely and efficiently while controlling your bike.
Don’t ride alone Consider riding with a bike club or doing a group ride. In addition to helping learn skills, you will meet folks who can share their experience.
What to eat For an event lasting over two hours, eat a protein bar just before the start and eat every 30 minutes for the duration of the event.

hris Kirkpatrick, DC Ranch resident and cyclist, is ready to hit the streets for the 14th annual Tour de Scottsdale this month. The Tour is hosted and produced by DC Ranch and benefits the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy which helps maintain the Preserve with the City of Scottsdale.
Kirkpatrick was first introduced to the Tour through volunteering at the water stations for two years with his local Rotary Club. After serving, Kirkpatrick was encouraged to begin cycling by a friend and avid cyclist, which piqued his curiosity. He purchased a bike four years ago and has been riding ever since. Kirkpatrick currently has three Tour de Scottsdale rides under his belt and is excited to add a fourth.

“There’s so much excitement and adrenaline in the air at the Tour. People are cheering and Market Street is just so lively and beautiful. It’s amazing. I recommend other residents get involved in this great event in our own backyard,” said Kirkpatrick.
He begins training for the Tour de Scottsdale in late summer when the lower temperatures make cycling a bit more bearable. Although he typically participates in the 30-mile ride, Kirkpatrick has his sights set on the 70-mile course in the future. A meniscus surgery derailed his plan this year but, with the help of cycling and therapy, he’s working his way back to a full recovery. When asked what he enjoys most about the sport, Kirkpatrick said, “I love to get out there early in the morning or late evenings to experience the peace and quiet. I can’t explain it but there’s nothing quite like it. I’m able to zone out and clear my mind for a couple of hours.”
Kirkpatrick, a native of Missouri, has lived in Scottsdale since 1985. He and his wife, Dawn, are Scottsdale Realtors who are deeply embedded in the local community through work and volunteerism. He‘s amazed at just how much the neighborhood has grown since he moved to the community.
“DC Ranch residents are fortunate and blessed to have an amenity like the Preserve. We have to take advantage of it and give back where we can,” said Kirkpatrick.
Kirkpatrick has enjoyed participating in the Tour de Scottsdale and would like to see more residents volunteer and get involved. He has volunteered at the Conservancy for four years and is excited to give back to a cause close to his heart.
On the day of the ride, as he gets into position with nearly 1,500 other cyclists, Kirkpatrick’s goal will be to ride 30 miles.
According to Kirkpatrick, there are many advantages to cycling that far exceed the physical benefits.
“The best thing “DC Ranch is the DC Ranch hosts about cycling is that best location for and produces the Tour it’s applicable to othoutdoor activities. er areas of my life. I which raises funds enjoy setting goals It complements our active lifestyle and reaching them. for the Scottsdale of hiking, biking The training is also McDowell Sonoran exciting because it and running. “I was hoping to ride in the 70 mile, but a man needs to know his limitations,” said Kirkpatrick.
Getting ready for an epic ride
F
BY MICHAEL KOLIN | STRADA RACING
or all but the most experienced cyclists, tackling the 70 mile long course of the Tour de Scottsdale is an epic adventure. While the route is beautiful and the journey is thrilling, it is a lengthy ride with many hills to climb before the finish line is in sight. The fun factor can increase and your ride time can decrease with good preparation. You should think of planning for the event as a part of the overall journey to improve your fitness and performance.
Even if you can ride at 20 mph, which is no small feat, the Tour will take over three hours to complete and includes lengthy climbs. Unless you have the time to do long distance rides, expert trainers for endurance events advise the following.
Ride at least three to four days each week. It’s ideal to do short rides on weekdays and long rides on weekends, however, the most important thing is consistency. Riding twice per week on a regular basis is better than riding many days one week and then skipping two weeks. You should ride at a speed that allows you to be in an aerobic work rate. There are good tests to determine your personal rate but an easy guide
is to ride at a pace that allows you to talk without breathing too hard. As you get closer to the event, your preparation should include gradually longer rides until you can complete a three hour ride without being totally exhausted. If you do a few three hour rides in the month leading up to a long distance ride and ride two to three times per week, you should not have a problem finishing. During weekday rides, which should be at least one hour each, warm up and practice individual training elements. For example, you might ride up and down up your favorite short, steep hill five to eight times in a row on one day. On another weekday, you could ride at a faster
pace for 15 minutes up a longer gradual hill. This variation trains your body to perform at its best in the shortest number of training hours. Ride short and focused during the week and longer and easier on the weekend to build your overall workload and stamina. Mike Kolin is the coach for the Strada Racing Club and has trained cyclists who have won over 12 World Championships, 20 National Championships and over 600 Arizona State Championships. GoDaddy shows up in big numbers at Tour de Scottsdale
G
oDaddy is on track to be the largest team to participate in the 2017 Tour de Scottsdale. This will make the 3rd year in a row for the Scottsdale-based web hosting company. GoDaddy employs a sizeable community of cyclists and a significant group of employees who live in the area regularly hike Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Therefore, supporting the Tour de Scottsdale which is produced by DC Ranch and raises funds for the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy seemed like an obvious choice. In fact, the team has grown so large that they rent out Market Street Kitchen as their staging and preparation area. “The 2015 Tour was such an exhilarating experience for the GoDaddy
team that we set out to increase participation every year and this year is no exception,” said Melissa Derganc, Global Marketing Manager. The company is expected to exceed 2016 participation numbers with 200 cyclists this year. An epic after party with GoDaddy CEO, Blake Irving, also doesn’t hurt. Employees from as far away as Seattle and London are flying in to join the fun at the Tour.
GoDaddy has both experienced and amateur cyclists who participate in the event. To to ensure cyclists safety, the company holds group training rides twice per week in Scottsdale and Tempe. These rides are led by two volunteer GoDaddy Fitness in Tech champions (GDFIT), Sergio Bustamante and Jesse Merced. GDFIT is made up of volunteers who
organize all of GoDaddy’s fitness activities.
GDFIT was founded four years ago based on a personal need for a community of like-minded individuals who were in search of wellness/ fitness support. What started with one founding member quickly grew to more than 4,000 employees. “GDFIT participates in and organizes weekly events such as hiking,
cycling, yoga, virtual meditation, among others but the Tour de Scottsdale remains a favorite of many employees at GoDaddy,” said Derganc. With a strong comradery among work friends—not to mention an amazing Tour after party—riding on the GoDaddy cycling team is definitely considered a perk of the job and is all in a day’s work.

“Our new shop on Market Street is our first location outside the state of New Mexico, where my family have been pioneers in the jewelry business since 1986, said proprietor Gigi Fite. “My mother Lilly Barrack personally designs every piece in our jewelry collection. After the world-renowned artist designs each ring, earring, necklace or bracelet, Native American silversmiths forge each piece in heavy gauge American silver, adding hand-selected gemstone

Lilly Barrack Designer Jewelry accents. And the silver lining? While the Lilly Barrack collection is of extremely high quality, it’s also uniquely affordable, with prices ranging from $20 to $1,500.
Because each Lilly Barrack piece is crafted by hand, there are fewer chemicals used. Another advantage is that more artisans are engaged in the production process. Every piece is hand-sculpted and produced from
“We are excited to branch out, and develop new roots. We sought a location in the Valley where we could connect with the local community, and have fun pairing jewelry with each customer’s personality. Landing on Market Street in the vibrant community of DC Ranch is truly a dream come true for us, said Fite.
In addition to Lilly Barrack’s designer jewelry line for everyday wear, the Market Street boutique carries distinct candles, giftware and jewelry from 60 other designers, ready for exquisite gift-wrapping for any occasion. “We are proud to introduce this first-to-market retail experience to DC Ranch and the Valley, said Daniel Kovacevic, Whitestone REIT Regional Vice President. “Lilly Barrack’s Southwest-inspired jewelry line aligns perfectly with the spirit of this region, and is an excellent addition to Market Street’s retail collection.

Author of more than 20 books on Arizona and the West, Trimble is not only Arizona’s Official State Historian, but one of the state’s most recognizable, entertaining and informative personalities.
Trimble has been called the “Will Rogers of Arizona” and appears frequently on radio and television as a goodwill ambassador for the state. “Trimble’s Tales” are on radio stations around Arizona. He answers questions about the Old West from

Legendary works of Paolo Soleri to debut at SMoCA In October, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) will unveil a groundbreaking and unprecedented retrospective of the innovative Italian-born American artist and architect Paolo Soleri.
Organized by SMoCA Curator of Contemporary Art Claire C. Carter, Repositioning Paolo Soleri: The City Is Nature focuses on drawings, sculptures and models that Soleri produced during the richest years of his artistic evolution—from 1947 until the mid-1970s. The selected works represent Soleri’s most creative moments when he was making his artwork and constructing his Paradise Valley home-studio, primarily with his own hands. The exhibition brings together elements from his built and unbuilt residences, bridges, dams, cities and transportation systems.
In addition to original drawings, models and sketchbooks, the exhibition surveys the artist’s earliest ceramic and bronze artisan crafts, as well as fabric designs and silkscreens. It also investigates Soleri’s personal engagement with the art and architecture of his time; the widespread recognition of his work by museums, scholars and curators; his relationship with Frank Lloyd Wright; and his influence on the American counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s.

“The Museum is very excited about this retrospective,” said SMoCA Director and Chief Curator Sara Cochran, Ph.D. “It has been a joy to have the opportunity to work with Soleri during his lifetime and to publish this comprehensive catalog that we believe will add to the scholarship around this visionary thinker now that he has passed.” For more information, please visit SMoCA.org.

ctober has been declared McDowell Sonoran Preserve Month by the City of Scottsdale. It’s fitting that the Tour de Scottsdale, one the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy’s largest fundraising mechanisms, takes places during this month-long commemoration. Since the Tour began in 2004, the DC Ranch Community Council and the Conservancy have shared a rich history of partnership, growth and success.
The Conservancy leverages the Tour to gain funding through corporate sponsors, a portion of the registration price, and donations from cyclists. All funds raised go directly to the Conservancy for education and conservations programs in the Preserve.
“The Tour de Scottsdale is a huge undertaking that involves a big commitment not only from the riders, but from volunteers both on and off the course, and from DC Ranch who plans and executes the ride and expo,” said Paul Staker, interim executive director of the Conservancy. “But when you see the sense of accomplishment of the riders when they cross the finish line, and see the families having a great time at the expo, it makes it all worthwhile.” The Conservancy is the sole non-profit beneficiary, and has traditionally provided volunteer support as well as riders for the event. The Tour has raised more than $500,000 for the Conservancy.
McDowell Sonoran Conservancy stewards Carolyn DiFonzo, David Wilson, and Toni Vallee were top finishers in the 2016 Tour de Scottsdale.
“It has been one of those really long-standing relationships that has benefitted everyone involved,” Staker added. “We’ve certainly appreciated the financial support and the awareness the Tour de Scottsdale has provided to the Conservancy and the Preserve. The Community Council’s long term participation and support clearly demonstrates DC Ranch’s commitment to being both a good neighbor and a good community citizen.” Round up your elementary school-age kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews, even your neighborhood kids and bring them to the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy’s third annual Junior Citizen Science Festival presented by Cox Communications, our friend in the digital age, and in cooperation with the City of Scottsdale. Children and families will enjoy more than a dozen interactive, fun-filled educational STEM inspired activities about Sonoran Desert natural history and learn how junior and adult Citizen Scientists study the environment. Children and youth must be accompanied by an adult. Participants can visit as many of the activities as they wish or visit all the activities to collect special giveaways! Pre-registered participants will get a special Junior Citizen Scientist tote bag loaded with fun, educational items. Space is limited so reserve your spot today!
