AZ Real Estate and then sort of from there you can look at what your priorities are and narrow your focus. People tend to overlook the master bedroom. You need to take care of yourself too, so work on renovating that space where you go to at the end of the day to unwind. DS: The main thing is people want somewhere to start, they want inspiration. The things you’ve got to think about are flow. Open up the walls to open up flow. When you’re entertaining and you have kids, you don’t want to be locked in the kitchen. Add an entertainment space or an island in the kitchen so you can see everything when you’re cooking. Features like fireplaces are good, too, to build around and arrange your furniture. Features could be anything from a kitchen island to a chandelier. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Q: Jonathan mentioned in the past he feels that everything in your guys’ Las Vegas home should be a conversation piece. What is the best conversation piece in your house? JS: My girlfriend and I went to Uganda and Kenya this year so we got a lot of local artifacts and goods. The stuff that we brought back is unbelievable, so I’m creating a whole little display of stuff to showcase this stuff. I don’t think you can truly appreciate where you’re from until you go somewhere else. Q: And what about Drew’s Honeymoon House, which he is updating with fiancee Linda? DS: Linda and I love that this is a restoration, not just a renovation. We’re keeping elements of the original fireplace and the old pocket doors. We have antiques we’re peppering in, like original Dr. Seuss books, the original album of Santo & Johnny’s “Sleep Walk.” Conversation pieces are something that’s sentimental to you, or even the process during the renovation. *On the story behind the baby hand prints outside his new home*

Question: This will be your guys’ fourth time back in Phoenix. What are some neighborhoods that you both have become familiar with during your time in the area? Jonathan Scott: We’re not crazy familiar with individual neighborhoods. I’ve spent time in Scottsdale and gone golfing in Phoenix. For us, we always want the fans to tell us on social media where we should go. We’re big foodies and always looking for great food, great cuisine, but want to know what’s something kind of unexpected and places that are kind of away from the main downtown core. Drew Scott: I don’t know any specific neighborhoods yet, but I’ve been down for the Phoenix Open and the Super Bowl. We love going to new cities, and the viewers love to see new cities, so we want our fans to hit up social media and tell HGTV to tell us where we should go in their towns. Q: Any plans to film in Phoenix any time soon? JS: To date we have not filmed there, but I will give you a little inside scoop. We’re looking at locations for our ‘Brother vs. Brother’ show, and right now Phoenix and Scottsdale are on the short list. So, keeping that in mind, we always have these fun challenges for fans when we come to town: what are some fun things that we can do around Phoenix? Q: What’s the most common advice you give to people asking you for tips on renovating their homes? JS: I always say that the biggest step is you never want to stifle creativity in the beginning. Dream big, write everything down, pull out magazine pictures,

DS: The woman who sold us the house, her parents are the second owners of the house, and she was literally born in the front entrance of the house. Her baby hand prints are still in the cement outside of the walkway, so we’re going to take those and give them to her as a thank you for selling us the house. Q: You’ve experienced everything from pregnant couples sharing their gender reveal with you to couples proposing on the show. What is a memorable moment that has stood out to you over the years? JS: We’ve become like family to a lot of these families we’ve worked with on the show. We’ve come back and visited families years later and done barbecues with them. One of the homeowners had me propose using magic. She had no idea it was coming, and at first she was like, what’s happening? She lost it and it was great. I think the audience really likes the human stories on our show even more than the reveals. DS: I’ll tell you one that embarrasses me. We’re helping a couple renovate this house and she was pregnant but she wasn’t telling her family and wanted to wait a few months and surprise them. Fifty of their family members flew in for the reveal of the house and I had asked our production managers if the family knew. They thought I was talking about the reveal and said yes, so I walked out, Jonathan said “What a great surprise,” and I put my hands on her stomach and said, “That’s not the only surprise.” Her mouth dropped open and I felt terrible. I ruined the surprise. Q: You recently went on a House Party tour to promote your second book and best-selling memoir “It Takes Two.” How was the writing process different this time around? Was it difficult to write about these more personal details? JS: This book was a lot more fun to write because we were recanting sto-

ries that we hadn’t thought about in decades. We were fact checking all of that. DS: Jonathan can tell you that we actually found out he inserted himself into my stories. JS: The crazy thing is, I actually remember telling these stories over the years, and I remember being in these situations, but I actually wasn’t there, it was Drew. We always said if we were going to do a memoir we would only do it if there was nothing omitted. We’ve never talked about our private lives before. I’ve never talked about my divorce, and it was very painful. It wasn’t an easy road to where we are today. I was scammed in my 20s and filed for bankruptcies, and Drew was riddled with debt. But we stuck to our guns, and we are in careers that we really love. Q: Reading your book, it’s clear you guys have done everything: you play the bagpipes, do karate and have even been clowns for hire. What are some other odd talents you have that fans don’t know about? DS: When we were young we were always willing to try something new, our parents really wanted us to get out, explore and experience. We would put on our own plays and write our own songs. If something was of interest to us, our parents were always pushing us to experience it. Now, I even take lessons for ping pong because I love it so much. JS: I actually do a magic routine I call the world’s most dangerous card trick. Someone picks a card and I use a nail gun to find it in a very unique way. You’ll have to come to the Home Show and see how. One of my favorite magic tricks is I would do this routine on stage where I would vanish on stage and appear in the middle of the audience. Question: I live in an over 55 community. On spring break, many of the grandchildren are here in Arizona visiting their grandparents. Our HOA CC&R’s restrict the hours children under the age of 18 can use the pool area. The restriction indicates that children are only allowed in the pool from 10am to 12noon and from 4pm to 6pm. Would you consider this discrimination and is restricting the hours legal? Answer: In a community that is not age restricted (55 and over), a pool rule that restricts children from using the pool certain hours of the day is a problem under the federal fair housing laws. Such rules that are not facially neutral have been successfully challenged and invalidated in communities around the country. However, a qualified age-restricted community has something like a “free pass” to discriminate against those who are not age qualified. The age qualification principally applies to occupancy of a home or unit and that the occupants of the units or homes be over the age of 55. This creates an obvious tension between parts of the fair housing laws that protect the rights of active adults living in these types of communities and the laws that protect families with children in regards to housing related issues. In resolving that tension, the law favors active adult community and allows the age restriction with regard to use of the amenities in that community as well. While there really is no reported decision on such rules in age-qualified communities, it would seem that the age-restricted community can lawfully impose rules restricting children in their use of the common amenities. In what would be unlawful in other communities, the 55 plus community can restrict the children’s use of the pool. A HUD (Department of Housing and Urban Development) fair housing publication long ago provided such guidance: The housing community/facility may restrict families with children from benefits of the community, or otherwise treat family households differently than senior households, as long as those actions do not violate any other state or local law. However, the community/facility is not exempt from the provisions of the Act that prohibit discrimination against any resident or potential resident on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, or disability.

When you complete a lease application for a new apartment, your application will likely include a credit check. Recent, serious security breaches with companies including Equifax and national retailers may have impacted

you without your notice. More than 143 million consumers’ data were compromised and if your data was stolen, your credit score may be affected if your information was used or abused. The stolen data included information ranging from social security numbers to bank account information so you need to check with your bank and credit bureaus to be sure that your information is safe. Before you complete any applications for credit, you should request your free credit score through a reputable web-

site. According to the law, every person can request a copy of their credit report, once each year, from each of the major credit reporting companies for free. Your credit score and application will certainly figure into your lease application approval for a rental home or apartment. Knowing your credit score in advance could help you in securing a lease. Management companies use a number of tools to run “hard inquiries” on your credit, and most have a desired credit score range for approval. If you

have something on your credit that needs to be explained, you may want to bring the credit report with you during the lease application and review the issues in person. You don’t want to have multiple companies running hard inquiries on your credit because this can negatively impact your score too.
