2018 ACURA NSX

2018 BMW 3 SERIES • Base price (incl. destination): $157,800

• Base price (incl. destination): $35,800

• Type: Two-door sport coupe

• Type: Compact sedan/ wagon

• Engine (h.p.): 3.5-liter V-6, twinturbocharged, with three electric motors (573, combined)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 (180240); 3.0-liter I-6 (320); 2.0-liter I-4, turbodiesel (180); 3.0-liter I-6, turbocharged (425); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged, with electric motor (248)

• Transmission: Ninespeed automatedmanual The original NSX that challenged German and Italian supercars costing much more when it debuted for the 1991 model year was considered revolutionary in its day. Now more than a quartercentury later a completely redesigned mid-engine NSX is poised to shake up that elite car class again. The most unique part of the car is the hybrid propulsion system consisting of two electric motors powering the front wheels plus a third motor connected to a twin-turbo V-6. The next result of this gasoline-electric mélange is 573 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque. Extra-cost options include fade-free ceramic brakes, and a carbon-fiber roof, rear spoiler and other pieces

• Drivetrain Mid-engine, all-wheel-drive • Base mpg (city/ highway/combined): 21/21/22 • Base weight (lb.): 3,870

2018 ACURA TLX

The 3 Series remains the one vehicle group that all other automakers covet. The 320i Sedan remains the starting point with its 180-horsepower 2.0-liter engine. The 330i Sedan and Sports Wagon follow with a 248 horsepower version of the I-4 That same engine is also found in the 330e plug-in hybrid that works with an 87-horsepower electric motor (fed from lithiumion batteries) to produce 248 combined horses. Likewise, the 340i runs with an inline 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that puts out 320 horsepower. Still standing is the 328d turbo-diesel’s 180 horsepower. For those needing a bit more oomph, the M3 rockets from 0-60 mph in 3.9-seconds via its turbocharged 425-horsepower 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine.

• Base price (incl. destination): $33,950

• Base price (incl. destination): $34,900

• Type: Four-door sedan

• Type: Four-door compact wagon • Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 (228)

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automated manual (2.4); ninespeed automatic (3.5)

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic

• Drivetrain Front- /allwheel-drive

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 23/32/26

• Base mpg (city/ highway/combined): 23/33/27 (2.4) • Base weight (lb.): 3,505

2018 BUICK ENCLAVE

The Enclave introduced luxury and three rows of seats to the Buick lineup when first introduced for 2008. The Enclave uses the same significantly lighter body structure as the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse, which means there’s two more inches between the front and rear wheels. The vehicle’s impressive utility is unchanged thanks to three rows of seats with room for either seven or eight riders. Pushing the start button fires a 302-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 that operates through a new nine-speed automatic transmission. Base Enclaves come with front-wheel-drive, with all-wheel- optional. That’s apparent with the Avenir trim that elevates the Enclave into the opulence bracket with an abundance of premium add-ons and active safety technology.

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

In creating the most humble model in the X family, BMW mounted the body on a chassis developed for BMW’s Mini division. That means it’s essentially a front-wheel-drive small utility vehicle with available all-wheel-drive hardware similar to that installed in the Mini Countryman. The system turns the front wheels only when conditions are ideal, but can shift up to 100 percent of the torque to the rear wheels when traction is needed. The sDrive 328i FWD) and xDrive (AWD) 328i 328i are the only models available and the only engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. According to BMW, that combination yields a zero-to-60-mph time of 6.3 seconds. The only major performance add-on is an M Sport Package that includes a sport-tuned suspension. All X1s come with the usual assortment of amenities plus extras such as heated mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, and fog lights.

• Base weight (lb.): 3,660

2018 BUICK ENCORE • Base price (incl. destination): $40,000

• Base price (incl. destination): $23,900

• Type: Full-size sport utility vehicle

• Type: Four-door subcompact tall wagon

• Engine (h.p.): 3.6-liter V6 (302)

• Engine (h.p.): 1.4-liter I-4, turbocharged (138)

• Transmission: Ninespeed automatic

• Transmission: Sixspeed automatic

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 17/25/20 (FWD)

• Base mileage (city/ highway/combined): 25/33/28 (FWD)

• Base weight (lb.): 4,360

2018 BUICK REGAL TOURX

Buick’s small and tall wagon continues to distinguish itself as a best seller for Buick and proves that a small car can still provide plenty of luxury trimmings. The Encore uses the same basic architecture as the Chevrolet Sonic sub-compact sedan and hatchback. The front passenger seat folds flat so that stuff like ladders and building materials can be more easily accommodated. The Encore comes with active noise cancellation that uses ceiling-mounted microphones to detect engine sounds. A 138 horsepower four-cylinder is standard. But the engine could really use some extra punch to offset the vehicle’s 3,200-pound-plus weight (not including the optional all-wheel-drive).

• Base weight (lb.): 3,240

2018 BUICK ENVISION • Base price (incl. destination): $30,000

• Base price (incl. destination): $35,000

• Type: Large station wagon

• Type: Five-passenger tall wagon

• Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (250)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (197), 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (252)

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic

• Transmission: Sixspeed automatic

• Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive

The TourX might wear a Regal badge, but has a style and function all its own. Perhaps Buick figured that since hatchbacks appear to be catching on, why not add what amounts to a more squaredoff version to the fleet. Along with a not inconsiderable amount of charcoal-colored side cladding, one of the more interesting TourX features is the extra-long distance between the front and rear wheels. A single turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant that connects to an eight-speed automatic transmission propels the TourX (it’s also the base engine and transmission in the Sportback) and standard all-wheel-drive helps keep the good times going, whatever the road and/or weather conditions.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 24/35/27

2018 BMW X1 • Engines (h.p.): 2.4-liter DOHC I-4 (206); 3.5-liter V-6 (290)

Honda’s premium division has performed a bit of surgery on the TLX. The resulting angular-shaped “diamond pentagon” grille that both vehicles now display is a darn sight more appealing than the shiny shield look that dates back more than a decade. Left untouched are the TLX’s two non-turbocharged drivetrain choices. Leading the way is a snappy 2.4-liter four-cylinder, but for a bit more sport, you can move up to a 3.5-liter V-6. The 2.4 is mated to an eight-speed automated manual transmission, while the 3.5 uses a nine-speed automatic. For 2018 Acura is introducing the A-Spec trim level with a unique bumper design, gloss black rear spoiler and exterior trim, up-lever interior finish and unique 19-inch wheels (18-inchers are standard).

• Transmission: Six-speed manual; eight-speed automatic; seven-speed automated manual (M3)

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 19/28/22 (est.) • Base weight (lb.): 3,420

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive The five-passenger built-in-China Envision slots between the seven-passenger Enclave and the sub-compact Encore in Buick’s tall wagon stable. In many respects, overall styling is reminiscent of the larger Buick Enclave, particularly in the rounded, bulging shape of the front fenders. But from any angle, the Envision is one attractive automobile that contains not the slightest hint of its import heritage. Buick claims the Envision competes favorably with the segment leaders in stowage room. All-wheel-drive is available (front drive is standard) but the system depends on the engine. Models with the optional turbo 2.0 get an available “Active Twin-Clutch” all-wheel-drive system with a rear differential that distributes added torque to the outside wheel when turning (called torque vectoring).

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 22/29/25 (2.5, FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 2,850

2018 CADILLAC CTS

2018 CADILLAC XT5 • Base price (incl. destination): $47,000; $88,000 (CTS-V)

• Base price (incl. destination): $40,400 • Type: mid-size tall wagon

• Type: Premium sedan • Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (272); 3.6-liter V-6 (335); 3.6-liter V-6, twin-turbocharged (420); 6.2-liter V-8, supercharged (640)

• Engine (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (310) • Transmission: Sixspeed automatic • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic Cadillac is heavily vested in sedans, which makes it tough sledding in a world gone crazy for wagons of every size and description. The CTS remains one of the better four-doors in its class, with a range of powertrains to rival the pack-leading BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The sole transmission is a strengthened eight-speed automatic that helps launch the big car to 60 mph from rest in a claimed 3.7 seconds, and has a top speed of 200 mph. The base engine is a 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 335 horsepower, while a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is optional, as is a twin-turbo V-6 with 420 horses at the ready. All CTS models get the eight-speed automatic transmissions.

• Drivetrain: Rear- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 21/29/24 (2.0) • Base weight (lb.): 3,920

2018 CADILLAC CT6

The five-passenger XT5 wagon shares virtually nothing with the SRX it replaced for 2017. Even so, Cadillac chose not to fiddle too much with the overall dimensions, other than a two-inch increase between the front and rear wheels for more rear-seat legroom plus a bit more stowage space behind the split-folding rear bench. Both SRX and XT5 share similar traits, but the latter’s front and rear ends are considerably sleeker and the side body panels are more sharply defined. But what really separates the old from the new is a platform that’s lighter by about 50 pounds. The reduced heft assists the standard V-6, which has been engineered for a bit more spunkiness. The engine also gets cylinder deactivation that shuts down two of the six cylinders under light load conditions for reduced fuel consumption. Sending twisting force to the front or all four wheels is handled by an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift paddles.

• Base weight (lb.): 3,990

2018 CADILLAC ESCALADE/ESV • Base price (incl. destination): $54,800

• Base price (incl. destination): $74,600; $77,600 (ESV)

• Type: Four-door sedan

• Type: Four-door luxury sport-utility vehicle

• Engines: (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (265, 335, hybrid); 3.6-liter V-6 (335); 3.0-liter V-6, turbocharged (404)

• Base engine (h.p.): 6.2-liter V-8 (420) • Transmission: 10-speed automatic

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic

• Drivetrain: Rear- /fourwheel-drive

• Drivetrain: Rear- /allwheel-drive If there are niches to fill in the luxury car category, Cadillac appears determined to fill them. The CT6 combines luxury appointments, prodigious power, knife-edgy design and lithe and lightweight construction. Assisting in the pound-paring quest is a 100-percent aluminum body and front suspension. Preventing the CT6 from becoming corpulent ensures that the four available power teams will provide the driver with plenty of kick. That includes the plug-in hybrid version that combines a base turbocharged four-cylinder with two AC electric motors for a 335-horsepower output and a maximum range of 31 miles of EV range at speeds up to 75 mph. The plug-in’s power is sent to the rear wheels through a continuously variable transmission, while the gasoline engines use an eight-speed automatic.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 19/27/22 (FWD)

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 22/30/25 (2.0) • Base weight (lb.): 4,400

For those who enjoy living and driving large, Cadillac has the ultimate luxury juggernaut. The Escalade and extended-size Escalade ESV are more like luxury staterooms or penthouses on wheels. The ESV is 20 inches longer and has a 14-inch wheelbase advantage over the standard-size Escalade. That translates into a considerable gain in cargo space with both rear seats folded or with the standard third-row seat in place. The Escalade comes with a Chevrolet-Corvette-based V-8 that, for 2018, is fitted with a 10-speed automatic. It can be left in fully automatic mode, or in manually selected “4 HI” for added traction in mud and snow conditions. The Escalade is certainly off-road capable, but you’re not likely to find many out there.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 14/21/17 (4x4) • Base weight (lb.): 5,600

2018 AUDI TT

2018 GMC TERRAIN • Base price (incl. destination): $45,000 (coupe); $48,500 (roadster)

• Base price (incl. destination): $26,000

• Type: Coupe/ convertible

• Base engines (h.p.): 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (170); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (252); 1.6-liter I-4, turbodiesel (137)

• Type: Compact sport utility vehicle

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (220-292); 2.5-liter I-5, turbocharged (400)

Most people love sports cars, but few actually buy them. That’s why they tend to be slow sellers. With the TR RS joining the line, buyers can pick from three levels of performance. Basic TT coupes and convertibles are fitted with a 220-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, while the coupe-only TTS turbocharged I-4 ratchets up that level by 72 horses to 292. The TT RS bursts through that ceiling with a turbo five-cylinder engine that pumps out 400 horsepower. Fast? How does zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds (as measured by Audi) sound? A six-speed dual-clutch (automated manual) transmission with paddle-shift controls sends power to all four wheels in the TT and TTS, while the TT RS is equipped with a seven-speed version.

• Transmissions: Sixspeed automated manual (TT, TTS); seven-speed automated manual (TT RS) • Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 23/30/26 • Base weight (lb.): 3,160

2018 GMC ACADIA

Without question, the second-generation Terrain is considerably more attractive than the previous version, even though that model proved to be a popular choice with buyers right from the start. Compared to the first-gen Terrain, this one is about three inches shorter overall and the distance between the front and rear wheels has shrunk by more than five inches. Nevertheless, the 2018 edition maintains about the same cabin space, while cargo room, whether the back seat is upright or folded, suffers only slightly. On the plus side, the front passenger seat’s backside can be dropped to create more stowage volume. The gas engines each use a nine-speed automatic transmission, while a six-speed auto fits with the turbo-diesel.

• Base weight (lb.): 3,450

• Base price (incl. destination): $29,700

• Type: Four-door midsize pickup

• Type: Full-size pickup • Engines (h.p.): 4.3-liter V-6 (285); 5.3-liter V8 (355); 6.2-liter V-8 (420) • Transmissions: Sixspeed automatic (4.3); eight-speed automatic (5.3, 6.2)

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base Mileage (city/ highway/combined): 21/26/23 (2.5 FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 3,960

2018 HONDA ACCORD

GMC’s light-duty pickup last received significant updating for 2016 and continues to stay the course. Since the Sierra and Chevrolet share the same chassis and powertrains, the question of which one to buy boils down to personal preference. Even their interiors share the same basic dashboards, control panels and touch-screen communications screens that are a masterstroke of efficient legibility. The Sierra’s V-6 and the two available V-8s use aluminum cylinder blocks and direct injection, whereby fuel is force-fed into the cylinders under high pressure. All three cabs – regular, double (extended) and four-door crew cabs can be order with four-wheel drive, however the near-luxury GMC Denali comes in crew cab only and 4WD is included. The Sierra comes with a plethora of special options and trim packages.

• Drivetrain: Rear- /fourwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 18/24/20 (4.3) • Base weight (lb.): 4,700

2018 HONDA CR-V • Base price (incl. destination): $25,000

• Base Price (including destination): $25,000 (est.)

• Type: Four-door compact sport-utility vehicle

• Type: Mid-size sedan • Engines (h.p.): 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (192); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (252); 2.0-liter I-4 with electric motor (n.a., Hybrid) • Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT, 1.5); 10-speed automatic (2.0) • Drivetrain: Front-wheeldrive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): • Base Weight (lb.): 3,200 (est.)

2018 HONDA CIVIC

• Engine (h.p.): 2.4-liter I-4 (185); 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (190) • Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) One of North America’s best-selling cars has received a major makeover for 2017, resulting in more passenger and cargo room and more power from two new engines. The CR-V uses a version of the same platform first developed for the current-generation Honda Civic. As a result there’s an extra 1.6 inches between the front and rear wheels that primarily benefits rear-seat passengers with more legroom. The CR-V’s tried and true 2.4-liter fourcylinder engine remains, but buyers can now upgrade to a turbocharged 1.5-liter I4 (also from the Civic) that makes an estimated 190 horsepower. Front-wheel-drive is standard while an upgrade to all-wheel drive is a relatively affordable option. Also optional is Honda Sensing that encompasses adaptive cruise Control, forward collision and lane-departure warning and lanekeeping assist.

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 26/32/28 (FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 3,310

2018 HONDA HR-V • Base price (incl. destination): $19,600

• Base Price (including destination): $20,500

• Type: Four-door sedan; two-door coupe; fourdoor hatchback

• Type: Four-door compact wagon • Engine (h.p.): 1.8-liter I-4 (141)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4 (158): 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (174, 205 Si); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (306)

The 10th-generation Honda Civic sedan, coupe and hatchback deliver the whole space, style and performance enchilada without compromise or beating too hard on the list price. For 2018 there’s now a whole lot of added spice to enjoy with the return of the Civic Si. The turbocharged engine in each produces slightly more horsepower than the previous edition. Honda obliges with the new Civic Type R. This fast hatch pounds out 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque from its turbo 2.0-liter I-4. Of course the Type R looks outrageous, with a giant rear wing, roofline “vortex generators” to help reduce drag and fender-filling 20-inch wheels. A continuously variable transmission is available in more genteel Civic coupes and sedans.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 26/30/28 (1.5, FWD)

• Base price (incl. destination): $30,000

• Transmission: Sixspeed automatic

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that North America’s two leading sedans (the Toyota Camry is the other) have been completely redesigned for the 2018 model year. But it’s the Accord that displays the most radical adjustment, both in the design and in propulsion systems. For 2018, the Accord runs with a couple of turbocharged four-cylinder powerplants plus a non-turbo four-cylinder with an electric motor in the Hybrid model. The base turbo delivers 192 horsepower replaces the previous 185-horsepower non-turbo 2.4-liter four-cylinder, while a largerdisplacement turbo makes 252 horses. The optional 2.0 also gets the manual gearbox, while a 10-speed automatic is optional. Meanwhile, Honda is promising a more efficient engine and battery pack for the Accord Hybrid, however details have yet to be released.

2018 GMC SIERRA • Engines (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (193); 3.6-liter V-6 (310)

The previous Acadia that was launched for the 2007 model year had been a big success for GMC. The second-generation Acadia that launched last model year hits a sweeter spot with buyers seeking space and comfort in a more manageable size. Although it still comes with three rows of seats, the folding third-row is more kid- than adult-friendly. With a smaller base powerplant factored in, the new Acadia also weighs a significant 700 pounds less. A four-cylinder engine that produces 193 horsepower serves as the base engine, while a 310-horsepower V-6 is optional. The system can be disconnected from the rear axle to save on gas, or switched to 4x4, Sport, Off Road or Trailer/Tow modes by adjusting the console-mounted selector knob.

• Transmissions: Ninespeed automatic; six-speed automatic (turbo-diesel)

• Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT) • Drivetrain Front-wheeldrive • Base MPG (city/ highway): 28/40/32 (1.5, CVT) • Base weight (lb.): 2,740

• Transmission: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT) • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive Think of the HR-V as the middle child of Honda’s small wagon lineup. In length it’s exactly half way between the larger Honda CR-V and the smaller (but no less versatile) Fit. The vehicle’s sloping roofline is more hatchback than wagon, but in terms of cargo volume, the HR-V beats the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage and is significantly ahead on volume compared to the Chevrolet Trax and Jeep Renegade. As with the Fit, the HR-V’s fuel tank is located in the center of the vehicle beneath the front seats, allowing for a flat floor and ample legroom for rear-seat passengers. The Fit-like rear seat-bottom folds up, which comes in really handy when transporting tall objects. The HR-V’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable unit (CVT) with optional paddle shifters that control seven pre-set ratios.

2018 HYUNDAI ACCENT

2018 HYUNDAI SANTA FE • Base price (incl. destination): $16,000 (est.) • Type: Four-door sedan

• Base price (incl. destination): $25,000 (Sport); $30,850 (Santa Fe)

• Engine (h.p.): 1.6-liter I-4 (130)

• Type: Four-door tall wagon

• Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.4-liter I-4 (190); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (264); 3.3-liter DOHC V-6 (290)

• Drivetrain: Frontwheel-drive Flying in the face of the public’s growing disdain for traditional sedans, Hyundai is taking the opposite tack and banishing the Accent wagon from the lineup. However, with the all-new sub-compact Hyundai Kona hatch also launching for 2018, the automaker’s reasoning makes sense. Besides, the new Accent is likely to be one of the more desirable small sedans around, if looks, passenger room and features are any measure. The Accent uses a brand new and much stiffer platform that’s less prone to twisting for a more secure (safer) and quieter ride. The Accent’s 1.6-liter engine, which has been refined for improved fuel economy, can be had with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic.

• MPG (city/highway/ combined): 28/38/30 (MT, est.) • Weight (lb.): 2,500 (est.)

2018 HYUNDAI ELANTRA

• Transmission: Sixspeed automatic The Santa Fe tries to be all things to all families by offering both two- and three-row seating capacities. To accomplish this, the automaker makes the shorter-wheelbase five-passenger Santa Fe Sport or the extended-length seven-passenger Santa Fe (with no suffix). The elongated version is heftier than the Sport by a good 400 pounds, which explains why it’s only available with a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V-6. Conversely, the Sport comes with a base 2.4-liter four-cylinder, or the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4. The system includes Torque Vectoring Corner Control (TVCC) that monitors driving conditions and can instantaneously direct the correct amount of power or braking force to any single wheel. TVCC assists in slippery conditions and provides added precision when negotiating turns.

• Type: Two-door sports coupe/convertible

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4 (147); 1.4-liter I-4, turbocharged (128, Eco); 1.6-liter I-4, turbocharged (201)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (275); 3.6-liter V-6 (335); 6.2-liter OHV V-8 (455); 6.2-liter V-8, supercharged (640, ZL1)

• Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic; seven-speed automated manual.

• Transmissions: Six-speed manual; eight-speed automatic (2.0, V-6); ten-speed automatic (ZL1)

• Drivetrain: Frontwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 26/36/29 (2.0, MT)

2018 CHEVROLET BOLT

The battle for horsepower supremacy continues unabated between General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler and their respective rear-wheel-drive sporty models. The latest salvo sees the arrival of the Camaro ZL1 1LE to the lineup in all its supercharged 650-horsepower V-8 glory. As a thinly disguised racecar, the coupe-only 1LE builds on the existing ZL1 with goodies such as a chin spoiler and a carbon fiber rear wing (adds 300 pounds of downforce to keep the car planted in the corners). Additionally there are specially designed aluminum dampers (shocks) and Goodyear Eagle Supercar tires mounted to lightweight 19-inch aluminum wheels. Chevrolet claims the 1LE can reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds (same as a regular ZL1). The regular ZL1 as well as other Camaro coupes and convertibles that are powered by the turbo- I-4, non-turbo V-6 or V-8 engines can each be fitted with an available six-speed automatic.

• Drivetrain: Rear-wheeldrive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 22/31/25 (I-4, MT)

• Type: Four-door sedan • Engines (h.p.): 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (163); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (250); 1.8-liter I-4 plus electric motor (182, Hybrid)

• Base engine (h.p.): Electric motor (200) • Transmission: Singlespeed controller • Drivetrain: Frontwheel-drive • Base MPG (equivalent) city/highway/ combined: 100/105/95 • Weight (lb.): 3,600

2018 CHEVROLET IMPALA

The Malibu is attractively and intelligently designed, allowing it to compete head to head with its rivals. That’s especially important these days, with the sedan category steadily losing ground to tall utility wagons (crossovers). The Malibu’s dimensions provide greater passenger space than its predecessor, particularly behind the front seat, where it was needed the most. The powertrain lineup places significant emphasis on torque and fuel economy and not just horsepower, which is fine for a car that’s one of the lightest in its class. Meanwhile the Malibu Hybrid uses components from the Chevrolet Volt’s plug-in system to achieve exemplary fuel economy (49 mpg city and 43 highway). Chevrolet claims the Hybrid can run at speeds up to 55 mph on battery power alone.

• Transmissions: Sixspeed automatic (1.5); nine-speed automatic (2.0); continuously variable (Hybrid) • Drivetrain: Frontwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 27/36/31 (1.5) • Weight (lb.): 3,110

2018 CHEVROLET SILVERADO • Base price (incl. destination): $28,400

• Base price (incl. destination): $29,100

• Type: Four-door sedan

• Type: Full-size pickup

• Engines (h.p): 2.5-liter I-4 (195); 3.6-liter V-6 (305; 260 in bi-fuel)

• Engines (h.p.): 4.3-liter V-6 (285); 5.3-liter V-8 (355); 6.2-liter V-8 (420)

• Transmission: Sixspeed automatic

• Transmissions: Sixspeed automatic; eight-speed automatic (5.3; 6.2)

• Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive

North American full-size sedans like the Impala as well as the Ford Taurus, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger are being left on the lots as car buyers are either gravitating to mid-size four-doors or are purchasing tall wagons. Chevrolet’s big flagship shares the same platform with Cadillac’s XTS, but the Impala’s appearance is far more broad-shouldered and defined than that of the Caddy. The Impala’s base 195-horsepower 2.5-liter comes with fuel saving start/stop technology that kills the engine when the vehicle is stationary, then restarts it when the brake is released. For maximum potency and trailering duties, a 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 is optional. The base Impala LS includes the air/ cruise/tilt basics plus 10 standard airbags, with the mid-grade LT significantly upping content levels.

• Base weight (lb.): 3,420

• Base price (incl. destination): $26,900

• Type: Four-door sedan; four-door hatchback wagon

The five-seat Chevrolet Bolt EV that launched in 2017 has a certified 238-mile range on a full charge, or enough to get most folks where they need to go. The tall roofline and squared-off body aid passenger comfort and stowage capacity with the split folding back upright or flat. Chevrolet claims the Bolt can sprint to 60 mph from rest in less than seven seconds (right up there with BMW’s i3 electric), thanks to the motor’s 266 pound feet of torque that kicks right in from the get go. An available 240-volt home charging station tops up the batteries from empty in about 9.5 hours, while charging at 120 volts (household current) takes more than day.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 21/27/24 (2.4, FWD)

2018 CHEVROLET CAMARO • Base price (incl. destination): $16,950 (sedan); $19,350 (GT)

Hyundai continues to introduce regular — and sometimes significant — changes to its models, as it did for 2017 when a new sedan was introduced. The Elantra sedan might appear more buttoned-down than before, but it’s consistent with the kind of quality image that Hyundai wants to project. Additionally, the stronger, stiffer body structure is lighter and, along with a rear suspension designed to deliver a better driving experience plus added comfort and quietness for passengers. For 2018 an all-new GT hatchback makes its debut and steals the show with aggressively good-looking sheetmetal. The Elantra sedan can be had with a 147-horsepower four-cylinder with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, a turbocharged 128-horsepower I-4 with a seven-speed automated manual.

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 22/31 (2.5) • Base weight (lb.): 3,600

In the battle for full-size pickup supremacy among domestic- and foreign-based automakers, both the Chevrolet Silverado and its near twin the GMC Sierra fare pretty well as they duke it out for top spot against Ford F-150 and FCA’s Ram pickups. Following a major makeover two years ago, the Silverado lineup changes very little. All body styles are attached to frames with lots of high-strength steel, extra bracing for stiffness and body mounts that help isolate road noise and vibration. The V-6 produces impressive power for its size, but for major hauling and towing duties one the base or optional V8s is essential. Additionally, a number of Special Edition packages allow for significant customization.

• Drivetrain: Frontengine, rear- /fourwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 18/24/20 (4.3) • Base weight (lb.): 4,940

2018 DODGE CHALLENGER

2018 DODGE DURANGO • Base price (incl. destination): $28,100

• Base price (incl. destination): $33,600

• Type: Two-door coupe

• Type: Four-door sport utility vehicle

• Engines (hp): 3.6-liter V-6 (305); 5.7-liter V-8 (375); 6.4-liter V-8 (485); 6.2-liter V-8, supercharged (707, Hellcat, 808-840, Demon)

With the arrival of the limited-production SRT Demon, Dodge is affirming its status as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ throwback muscle car specialist. The Demon stomps all over the Hellcat’s 707-horsepower supercharged “Hemi” V-8 with up to 840 earthmoving (but street-legal) horses (on 100 octane racing fuel) using a special upgrade package that costs just one dollar (808 horses come standard). Taking the Demon route will set you back close to $85,000, if you can get your hands on one of the planned 3,000 cars for the U.S. For something much tamer that you can drive year-round, check out the all-wheel-drive Challenger GT. The V-6 and 5.7-liter “Hemi” V-8 (standard with R/T trims) returned unaltered, as does the 6.4-liter V-8 used to power the Challenger SRT 392.

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic (std. with V-6); six-speed manual (std. with V-8s). • Drivetrain: Rear- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway): 19/30/23 (3.6) • Base weight (lb.): 3,830

2018 DODGE CHARGER

• Engines (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (290); 5.7-liter V-8 (360); 6.4-liter V-8 (475) • Layout: Four-wheeldrive • Transmission: Eightspeed automatic Dodge has assumed the top spot for performance among North American automakers with a range of Hemi V-8-powered models. The Durango joins this August group with a new SRT model that’s packing 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough, says Dodge, to propel the Durango from zero to 60 mph in a fleet-footed 4.4 seconds. Unchanged is the highly regarded 290-horsepower V-6 — standard in the SXT and Crew models — has a fuel-saving system that automatically shuts off the engine when stopped, and then re-fires when you let off the brake pedal. Meanwhile the optional 360-horsepower V-8 has a variabledisplacement system that reduces fuel consumption by shutting down half of the engine’s cylinders under light-load conditions.

2018 RAM 1500 • Base price (incl. destination): $29,100

• Base price (incl. destination): $27,900

• Type: Four-door sedan

• Type: Two- /four-door pickup

• Engines (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (292-300); 5.7-liter V-8 (370); 6.4-liter V-8 (485); 6.2-liter V-8, supercharged (707)

• Engines (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (305); 3.0-liter V-6, turbo-diesel (240); 5.7-liter V-8 (395)

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic (3.6, 3.0, opt. on 5.7); sixspeed automatic (5.7)

• Drivetrain: Rear- /allwheel-drive Dodge’s full-size sedan doesn’t sell in huge quantities, although you’re probably aware that there are more and more Police Pursuit models on the road these days. Still, the Charger’s reputation sets a performance tone for the brand as a whole. Buyers can go as tame or as torrid as they wish and their budgets will allow, starting with the relatively mild V-6 (if you consider up to 300 horsepower “mild”) V-6. That engine in the Charger GT Plus trim means it also comes with all-wheel drive. Move uprange and a selection of “Hemi” V-8s are yours for the picking, ranging from the 370-horsepower R/T and Daytona to the 485 horsepower SRT 392. At the peak is the hellacious Hellcat with 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 19/26/22

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 19/30/23 (3.6, FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 4,020

Along with the Jeep brand, the Ram-series pickups have been the brightest stars in Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ universe. V-6 models take care of light-duty chores, while the big-boss “Hemi” V-8 takes on the tougher towing and hauling. The engine’s 420 pound-feet of torque allows it to tow up to 9,200 pounds, versus 7,450 for the gasoline-burning V-6. It’s also rated at 20 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Ram pickup content ranges from the barebones basic Tradesman, all the way up to the newfor-2018 fully loaded Limited Tungsten (11 trim levels, in all). Ram buyers looking to add the four-wheel-drive option can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant.

2018 FORD TAURUS

2018 FORD ESCAPE • Base price (incl. destination): $28,200

• Base price (incl. destination): $24,500

• Type: Four-door, front- / all-wheel-drive full-size sedan

• Type: Four-door tall wagon • Engines (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (168); 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (179); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (245)

• Engines (h.p.): 3.5-liter V-6 (288); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (240); 3.5-liter V-6, twinturbocharged (365)

It’s easy to understand the appeal of the Ford Taurus to both police departments and other fleet users, especially after its rather all-encompassing update several years ago. The bold grille, wide fenders and rear LED tail lamps contribute to the big sedan’s distinctive shape. The interior integrates a bunch of display screens that give access to the MyFord Touch and the latest SYNC system. Available luxury toys include massaging front seats, automatic high-beam activation and rain-sensing wipers. Base Taurus models are motivated by the 288-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 combined with a standard six-speed automatic transmission and optional all-wheel-drive. Those looking to save a little fuel can opt for the slightly more efficient turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 240 horsepower.

• Transmissions: Sixspeed automatic with available manual-shift and rev-matching functions • Layout: Front engine, front- /all-wheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 18/27/21 (3.5, FWD) • Base Weight (lb.): 3,960

2018 FORD MUSTANG

• Transmission: Sixspeed automatic The blue-oval automaker deemed that a nip here and a tuck there was all that was necessary to keep the Escape up with the times. With these minor front- and rear-end updates initiated for 2017, the 2018 edition remains quite the handsome devil and looks similar to the mid-size Edge. Inside, the hand brake was replaced with an electronic activator and the gear shifter has been relocated to the spot where the brake lever used to be. There are two optional turbocharged four-cylinder engines that supplement the base non-turbo I-4. Although the Escape’s recent updates might seem like change for the sake of change, buyers will likely not quibble with Ford keeping its popular wagon in tune with the times.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined) 21/29/24 (2.5) • Base weight (lb.): 3,890

2018 FORD F-150 • Base price (incl. destination): $25,600; $35,100 GT

• Base price (incl. destination): $28,700; $49,500 (Raptor)

• Type: Two-door coupe/ convertible

• Type: Two- /four-door full-size pickup

• Engines (h.p.): 2.3-liter I-4, turbocharged (310); 5.0-liter V-8 (460); 5.2-liter V-8 (526)

• Engines (h.p.): 3.3-liter V-6 (290); 2.7-liter V-6; turbocharged (325); 3.5-liter V-6, turbocharged (365450); 5.0-liter V-8 (395); 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel

• Drivetrain: Rear-wheeldrive Beside the word ‘iconic’ in the dictionary should be an image of Ford’s long-serving pony car. For 2018, fans of the brand will first notice a few styling enhancements, including a lengthened and lowered hood plus a slightly bigger grille that make the Mustang look sleeker. There’s also significant suspension upgrades, including new anti-roll bars and the availability of magnetically adjusting shock absorbers. The biggest change is the cancellation of the 3.7-liter V-6 as the base engine. It won’t be replaced, which means that the ’Stang’s turbocharged four-cylinder takes over that role. Each powerplant is connected to a reworked six-speed manual transmission, or an optional 10-speed automatic that replaces the six-speed unit.

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Transmissions: Six-speed manual; 10-speed automatic (opt.) • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): n.a. • Base weight (lb.): 3,400 (est.)

Ford dominates in the light-duty pickup segment and should maintain that position with improvements to the F-150. The switch to lighter dent-resistant aluminum body panels hasn’t hurt the popularity of Ford’s class-leading light-duty pickup. For 2018 the F-150 gets new front-end styling that’s similar to the Super Duty pickup, resulting in a better-looking truck. There are also drivetrain revisions starting with a 3.3-liter V-6 in base F-150 trucks that makes 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, up from the previous 282 horsepower and 253 pound-feet. The optional twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6 makes the same power, but now pumps out 400 pound-feet of torque (up from 375), helped by a new fuel-injection system. An available turbo-diesel comes on board as a mid-season addition.

• Transmissions: Sixspeed automatic; 10-speed automatic • Drivetrain: Rear- /fourwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 15/22/17 • Base weight (lb.): 4,500 (est.)

2018 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE • Base price (incl. destination): $31,500 • Type: Four-door sportutility vehicle • Engines (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (295): 5.7-liter V-8 (360); 6.4-liter V-8 (475); 6.2-liter V-8, supercharged (707) • Transmission: Eightspeed automatic The five-passenger Grand Cherokee makes a significant performance move by borrowing the Dodge Challenger/ Charger Hellcat’s supercharged V-8 that makes a ridiculous 707 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque. The model that gets it is called Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, and it comes with all-wheel-drive. To handle the prodigious torque, it also gets a stronger eight-speed automatic transmission and a tougher differential and rear driveshaft. If the Trackhawk’s $86,000 price tag is too steep, the much cheaper 475-horsepower SRT model delivers plenty of thrills. Meanwhile, the Trailhawk is specifically designed for more extreme off-road traversing. On the luxury side, the full-on luxury Summit eclipses the next-in-line Overland with “Natural Plus” leather-covered seats, open-pore wood trim, faux-suede headliner, dual-pane moonroof and an 825-watt 19-speaker Harmon Kardon surround-sound system.

2018 JEEP WRANGLER JK • Base price (incl. destination): $25,100 • Type: Two- /four-door sport-utility vehicle • Engine (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (285) • Transmissions: Sixspeed manual; fivespeed automatic (opt.) • Drivetrain: Four-wheeldrive The Wrangler JK enjoys a hardcore following among dilatants and devil-may-care rock bounders and mud crawlers alike. However seismic-shift changes are expected for the 2019 model year when the Wrangler JK sheds its all-sheet-metal body for some lighter-weight aluminum panels. All trim levels are fitted with a 285-horsepower six-cylinder engine with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. The Rubicon comes with OffRoad Rock-Trac with extra-low-range gearing, front- /rear-locking differentials and 32-inch off-road rubber. For extreme off-roading crawling the extra-tough Rubicon X features special BF Goodrich off-road tires and Trak-Lok anti-spin rear differentials with available electronic rear lockup. For its final hurrah, a new Golden Eagle trim level features a Tan top, body color fender flares plus special interior trim.

2018 INFINITI Q50

(Individual test drive times may vary, please visit www.AutoShowPhoenix.com for more details.) • Base price (incl. destination): $35,200 • Type: Four-door sedan • Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (208); 3.0-liter V-6, twin-turbocharged (300-400); 3.5-liter V-6 plus 50-kw electric motor (360) • Transmission: Sevenspeed automatic

Last model year, Infiniti’s best-selling model inherited a new three gasoline-engine lineup that is being matched this year with revised body styling that centers on both ends of the sedan. The idea here is to make the Q50 more aggressive looking, which is what buyers in the entry luxury class prefer. The starting-point turbocharged four-cylinder (courtesy of Mercedes-Benz) puts out a modest 208 horsepower, but from that point it’s performance all the way with a twin-turbocharged V-6 that churns out up to 400 horsepower (in the Red Sport model). All engines are mated to seven-speed automatic transmissions. An interesting Q50 option is Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS). It allows drivers to determine steering ratio and steering effort by selecting from Standard, Sport, or Sport-Plus modes.

High fashion for the highway best describes the QX30. It’s possibly the least wagon-y wagon in a group of premium crossovers that has seemingly sprung from out of nowhere to become dominant in cutting-edge vehicle design. Just about every surface area on the QX30 has one or more sharp creases or pointy bits that give it a contemporary art- design appearance. That’s in stark contrast to the less sassy Mercedes-Benz GLA wagon from which it spawned. In fact, both vehicles operate with identical turbocharged 208-horsepower engines built by Mercedes-Benz. The base front-wheel-drive QX30 arrives loadedup with more than just the basics, but that still leaves plenty of room for optional stuff like all-wheel-drive leather-covered seats, 10-speaker Bose audio system and power moonroof navigation system.

2018 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR

2018 LINCOLN MKZ • Base price (incl. destination): $36,100

• Base price (incl. destination): $73,250; $81,950 (L)

• Type: Four-door, front/all-wheel-drive sedan

• Type: Four-door sport utility vehicle

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (240): 3.0-liter V-6, twin-turbocharged (400); 2.0-liter I-4 with a 47-horsepower electric motor (188 net, hybrid)

• Engine (h.p.): 3.5-liter V-6, twin-turbocharged (450) • Transmission: 10-speed automatic • Drivetrain: Rear- /fourwheel-drive There’s literally a lot to love about the all-new Navigator if you’re in the market for a Titanic-sized luxury utility vehicle. Both it and the equally large Ford Expedition have received similar changes to their skins and all-new chassis, but the Nav’s twin-turbocharged V-6 outguns the Expedition’s version by 75 horsepower. Buyers will find plenty of standard and optional trick stuff in their Navigators, including laminated side glass for a quieter cabin, “speeddependent” adaptive headlights that spread the light over a wider area at lower speeds and a customizable cargo management system that keeps stored items in their place. Last, but far from least, you can order a 20-speaker premium audio system.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 15/21/17 (4x2) • Base weight (lb.): 6,000 (est.)

2018 LINCOLN MKC

If the Continental’s $46,000 base tariff is too rich for your credit limit, then check out the Lincoln MKX and save yourself about $10,000. The MKX’s front-end is nothing short of stunning, and looks considerably better than the previous winged grille. The car’s massive windshield and rear window glass, including an optional retractable panoramic sunroof, makes claustrophobia doubtful. Inside is an ultra-sophisticated leather-covered and wood-trimmed interior plus a floor console that seamlessly extends almost the full length of the cabin. The base turbocharged four-cylinder engine carries on, while buyers craving more power can opt for twin-turbocharged V-6. The front-wheel-drive-only Hybrid adds electrification to the turbo 2.0 and connects the system to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 21/31/24 (2.0) • Base weight (lb.): 3,740

2018 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL • Base price (incl. destination): $33,800

• Base price (incl. destination): $45,650

• Type: Four-door compact utility vehicle

• Type: Four-door, front/all-wheel-drive sedan

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (240); 2.3-liter I-4, turbocharged (285)

• Engines (h.p.): 3.7-liter V-6 (305); 2.7-liter V6, turbocharged (335); 3.0-liter V-6, twinturbocharged (400)

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Transmission: Sixspeed automatic

• Transmission: Sixspeed automatic The compact MKC faces off against the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and other upscale compact wagons. Lincoln’s design team started with the Ford Escape’s platform and created a unique and handsome shape. However the MKC’s standard and extra-cost luxury content ensures there will be little, if any, commonality with the Escape. It’s also quieter inside, aided by Active Noise Control that uses hidden microphones to cancel out unwanted engine noises. The system can be combined with continuously adjustable shock damping, power-assisted electric steering, variable transmission shift mapping plus traction and stability control to form “Lincoln Drive Control.” There are base and optional turbocharged four-cylinder engines to pick from, with each operating through a six-speed automatic transmission.

• Transmissions: Sixspeed automatic; continuously variable (Hybrid)

• Base MPG (city/ highway): 21/28/23 (2.0, FWD) • Base Weight (lb.): 3,820

Ford’s upscale division appears to be going all out to prove it can build a limo-like model to rival the best efforts from Germany, Japan, England, plus the brand from down the road, Cadillac. In so doing, Lincoln brought back the Continental nameplate, which it let lapse more than 15 years ago. The latest version, which replaced the MKS sedan, appears similar to the smaller MKZ sedan, but the rest of the car displays original, understated lines topped by a formal roofline. Lincoln claims the front seats are inspired by those found in executive jets, and are adjustable up to 30 ways. You can order both front and rear seats with heating, cooling and massage functions (the rear bench also reclines).

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined) 17/26/20 (3.7) • Base weight (lb.): 4,220

2018 NISSAN ROGUE

2018 NISSAN TITAN • Base price (incl. destination): $25,400

• Base price (incl. destination): $30,800

• Type: Four-door compact wagon

• Type: Full-size pickup • Engines (h.p.): 5.6-liter V-8 (390); 5.0-liter V-8, turbo-diesel (310)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (170); 2.0-liter I-4 with 30-kw electric motor (176, combined, Hybrid)

• Transmissions: Sevenspeed automatic; sixspeed automatic (opt.)

• Transmission: Continuously variable The Nissan Rogue is one of the top contenders in the compact wagon segment and will likely continue to gain strength since the gasoline-electric model joined the lineup. The Hybrid uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine working in tandem with a 30-kilowatt electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack to produce a combined 176 horsepower. Both models employ a continuously variable transmission, are available in front- or optional all-wheel-drive and in five- or available seven-passenger variants. Physically, the Hybrid benefits from the same makeover that regular Rogues received for 2017, including new and frontand rear-end redesigns, revised interiors and more available active safety items. The Hybrid also earns a 33 mpg city, 35 highway and 34 combined fuel economy rating (FWD).

• Drivetrain: Front engine, front- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 26/33/29 (gas 2.0, FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 3,420

2018 NISSAN LEAF

The most successful mass-produced electric car in the world is poised to become even more successful for 2018. The new Leaf, which is now built in Nissan’s Smyrna, Tenn. Plant, looks great with what Nissan calls “cool tech” styling. As for performance, the new Leaf delivers 40 percent more range (up to 150 miles) and 26 percent more peak torque (236 pound-feet), thanks to a new 147-horsepower electric motor and larger-capacity lithium-ion battery pack. Charging the batteries from empty takes about eight hours using a 240-volt home charger, or 16 hours on household current. In 2019, Nissan plans to offer a more powerful battery option that it estimates will extend the Leaf’s range to about 300 miles.

• Drivetrain: Rear- /fourwheel-drive Over the past couple of model years, Nissan has steadily expanded the California-designed, Tennessee-built Titan’s pickup assortment. It now comprises both regular and extended King-Cabs that joined the original four-door crew cab versions. A gasoline V-8 that produces 390 horsepower and 410 poundfeet of torque is standard in the light-duty half-ton Titan that has less payload and towing capacities than the original Titan XD. The half-ton’s less stout chassis is also about a foot shorter in distance between the front and rear wheels than the XD and also sits 1.5 inches lower to the ground. Meanwhile, the XD uses a V-8 turbo-diesel that puts out 310 horses and 555 pound-feet of torque. All Titans are covered by a generous five-year, 100,000mile bumper-to bumper warranty.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 15/21/18 (5.6) • Base weight (lb.): 5,180

2018 NISSAN MURANO • Base price (incl. destination): $31,000 (excluding government tax credits)

• Base Price (incl. destination): $30,700

• Type: Four-door compact hatchback

• Engine (h.p.): 3.5-liter V-6 (260)

• Engine (h.p.): 80-kilowatt electric motor (147)

• Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT)

• Layout: Front-wheeldrive

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Transmission: Singlespeed controller • MPG (equivalent, city/ highway): n.a. • Weight (lb.): 3,430

• Type: Four-door, fivepassenger wagon

Although the Murano carries on unaltered, it did receive several content revisions partway into the 2017 model year, but there were no adjustments to the body or powertrain. Since its inception, the Murano has been a car that appeals primarily to buyer’s hearts and not necessarily their heads. The sharply creased sheetmetal that extends along the door panels is interrupted by a fin-like hitch that seemingly rises into the rearmost side glass. The cabin is equally impressive, with a low-level instrument panel and a generously sized windshied. The Murano’s sole powerplant is a V-6 with 260 horsepower. Power is delivered to the front and/or rear wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with built-in “steps” that sort of mimic an actual multi-gear automatic transmission.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 21/28/24 • Base weight (lb.): 4,025

2018 PORSCHE CAYENNE

2018 PORSCHE MACAN • Base price (incl. destination): $65,700

• Base price (incl. destination): $48,850

• Type: Two-door hardtop

• Type: Four-door compact tall wagon

• Engines (h.p.): 3.0-liter, 340 h.p.

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (252); 3.0-liter V-6, twin-turbocharged (340-360); 3.6-liter V-6, twin-turbocharged (400)

• Transmission: Standard 8-speed • Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive

The Macan is more than a smaller-sized Cayenne; the wagon’s architecture originates from the Audi Q5. However its mostly aluminum body is influenced by the Cayenne. Interior styling is as trim as any model in Porsche’s lineup. The entry-level Macan comes with a turbocharged I-4 with 252 horsepower, while the Macan GTS’ twin-turbo V-6 makes 340-horsepower in S models and 360 horses in the GTS. Lastly, the Macan Turbo derives its 400-horsepower output from a twin-turbocharged V-6. Porsche says the high-performance Turbo takes as little as 4.4 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standing-start. Every Macan comes with a seven-speed automated manual transmission (PDK) that makes ultra-quick up-shifts and extra-smooth rev-matched downshifts.

Five doors that are open to any adventure. With a new, dynamic design and a new generation of efficient, turbocharged engines. With outstanding digital connectivity that brings the whole world into the cockpit. With versatility, quality and new cutting-edge driver assistance systems that offer both driver and passengers extraordinary comfort. This is how the Cayenne makes the Porsche experience even more fascinating. And nevertheless remains that which it has always been: a genuine sports car. A range of new, helpful services and smartphone apps that simplify your life in a variety of ways include the new Porsche Connect app, Apple® CarPlay, and My Porsche. The customary identifying features are there to be seen, including the strongly emphasized front panels, the long, downward sloping hood and with its power dome, and the characteristic three-piece air intakes, which are even larger and more dominant.

• Type: Two-door hardtop

• Engines (h.p.); 3.0-liter V-6 (370)

• Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive

• Type: Two-door hardtop

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 23/25

• Transmissions: Sixspeed manual; sevenspeed automated manual (PDK) The same changes that were made to the Porsche Boxster were also made to its hardtop stable mate. There are two four-cylinder units that are identical in output to those in the Boxster. The base Cayman 2.0-liter produces 300 horsepower, a gain of 25 from the previous 2.7-liter H6. Op for the Cayman S and the larger 2.5-liter H-4 pops for 350 horses, which is also a gain of 25 from 2016’s 3.4-liter six-cylinder. The added output and lighter weight for each model translates into improved fuel economy plus some impressive zero-to-60-mph times — 4.9 seconds for the Cayman and 4.4 seconds for the S. Porsche reengineered the suspension and steering systems to improve the Cayman’s and the Boxster’s road and racetrack agilities.

• Transmission: Sevenspeed automated manual

• Drivetrain: Mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 21/28/24 (2.0, MT) • Base Weight (lb.): 2,940

With less weight, a manual transmission with a shorter constant transaxle ratio, and a standard mechanical rear differential lock, performance and driving pleasure are heightened. The 911 Carrera T (“T” stands for Touring) is also equipped with several performance-enhancing features that are not available on the standard 911 Carrera. This includes the PASM Sport Suspension with a 0.39-inch (10 mm) lower ride height, a shortened gear lever with an embossed shift pattern in red, and seat centers made of Sport-Tex material. Rearaxle steering is not available for the standard 911 Carrera but is an option for the 911 Carrera T.

2018 MAZDA CX-5 • Base price (incl. destination): $72,520 (est.)

• Base price (incl. destination): $25,000 • Type: Four-door compact wagon

• Type: rear-wheel-drive sedan

• Engine (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (187)

• Engines (h.p.): 4.6-liter V-8 (359)

• Transmissions: Sixspeed automatic

• Transmission: Eightspeed sequential shift automatic

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Drivetrain: Rear-/allwheel-drive It is entirely possible that no single automobile has, upon its introduction, upended a deeply established category as decisively as the first Lexus LS did when it launched the luxury brand 28 years ago. Longer and lower than the model it replaces, the allnew LS debuts a strikingly sleek and bold design with a coupelike silhouette punctuated by the unique Lexus design language. While making the new LS even more of a driver’s car, Lexus also optimized the LS as a car to be driven in, lavishing considerable attention to the rear seat. For high power, scintillating performance and excellent fuel efficiency, Lexus designed an allnew 60-degree 3.5-liter V6 engine specifically for the new LS.

2018 LEXUS RX

The RX has been a trendsetter since first turning a wheel for the 1999 model year and the current fourth-generation model is no different. The RX 350 and 450h hybrid variant were stretched a bit between the front and rear wheels back in 2016. The RX 350’s V-6 produces 295 horsepower. The RX 450h hybrid functions with its own 259-horsepower version of the V-6, but combined with up to three motor generators, it makes 308 horsepower. An optional F Sport trim package’s constantly variable suspension system instantly adjusts the dampers according to road and driving conditions. Rumor has it that Lexus is planning to introduce an extended-length RX companion model for 2019 with room for seven passengers.

• Type: Two-door roadster

• Engines (h.p.): 3.5-liter V-6 (295); 3.5-liter V-6 with electric assist (308)

• Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4 (155)

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic; continuously variable (RX 450h)

• Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic

2018 KIA RIO • Base price (incl. destination): $14,800 • Type: Sub-compact sedan/hatchback wagon • Engine (h.p.): 1.6-liter I-4 (130) • Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic • Drivetrain: Frontwheel-drive In the basic-transpo group, the Rio sedan and 5-Door hatchback wagon stacks up well as a good-looking, semi-sporty driver’s car with enough room for five passengers and their gear. The car is larger overall than most competitors (e.g. Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Sonic, Toyota Yaris iA), however a lower body height means it takes a back seat in interior space to the class-leading Honda Fit and Nissan Versa Note. The Rio’s completely new platform has been significantly stiffened for improved ride and driving qualities as well as for safety. Additionally, a revised suspension setup has been designed to help way the car handles road imperfections while maintaining its composure when cornering.

The CX-5’s smaller CX-3 relation is one cute and sporty little wagon that’s getting a lot of attention, but it does have its limitations. For more people and cargo capacity, the bigger CX-5 is a better choice. The CX-5’s mechanical bits are part of Mazda’s “Skyactiv” system that’s more than just marketing puffery; it represents a holistic transformation of the powertrain plus various other components that helps save fuel and turns the entire lineup into exemplary driving machines. For 2018 the CX-5 was given a modest front- and rear-end redesign plus a new dashboard with a tablet-style touchscreen that replaced the in-dash version. The 2.5’s output is now pegged at 187 horsepower. All-wheel-drive is optional on all models — Sport, Touring, Grand Select and Grand Touring.

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 26/31/29 (2.0, MT)

• Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 29/37/32 • Base weight (lb.): 2,650

• Drivetrain: Rear-wheeldrive

Compared to the previous Miata, the latest version is considerably sleeker from grille to trunk lid. Mazda’s stylists reduced the overall length by more than three inches and shortened the distance between the front and rear wheels by close to an inch. But for something a lot more stylish, you can upgrade to the MX-5 RF, which stands for Retractable Fastback. At the touch of a button, the rearward roof section rises up, the top panel tucks itself behind the seats, then the roof section returns to its original position. Unchanged is the Miata’s 155-horsepower engine with a six-speed manual transmission, or six-speed automatic. Of the three available trim levels, the top-line Grand Touring provides the most comfort and safety content.

2018 MERCEDES-BENZ C-CLASS

2018 MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS • Base price (incl. destination): $53,950 (sedan); $59,900 (coupe); $64,000 (wagon); $67,300 (cabriolet)

• Base price (incl. destination): $41,250 (sedan); $44,200 (Coupe); 52,200 (Cabriolet) • Type: Four-door luxury sedan/two-door coupe/ two-door convertible

The C-Class lineup is a toy box that’s brimming with similarly sized cars of different shapes to cover a huge range of buyers. It’s not like the four-door sedan is old by any means, but the new coupe and convertible models that were introduced for 2017 are the newest. The toggle-style gearshift lever that controls a new nine-speed automatic transmission is located on the steering column and in its former location on the console is a controller with a unique touch pad. The base engine for all is a turbocharged four-cylinder with higher-performing AMG models receiving turbo V-6 and V-8 variants. Luxury abounds with leading-edge luxury options such as a sport suspension, panoramic sunroof and 13-speaker Burmester-brand audio system.

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (241); 3.0-liter V-6, turbocharged (363); 4.0-liter V-8, turbocharged (469); 2.0-liter I-4 plus electric motor (275, combined) • Transmissions: Ninespeed automatic • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 24/34/28 (2.0, FWD)

2018 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE CROSS

• Types: Full-size luxury sedan/coupe/cabriolet/ wagon

Mercedes-Benz continues to provide the absolute latest in luxury and safety content in an expanding number of trim levels for its equally expanding list of patrons. The E300 runs with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 241 horsepower, while the E400’s V-8 increases that output to 329 horsepower. However the AMG E43 and AMG E63 S performance monsters blow the E400 away with outputs of 396 and 603 horsepower, respectively. The wagon is available as an E400 or an E 63 S only, while the coupe and cabriolet’s E300 and E400 model choices are the same as the sedan’s. The E-Class provides a quiet, comfortable and competent luxury ride that effortlessly transports you in typical Mercedes-Benz style.

2018 TOYOTA CAMRY

• Transmissions: Sixspeed automatic; continuously variable (CVT, Hybrid) A half-dozen years into its fourth generation and Toyota’s compact utility vehicle remains as popular as ever. And, other than the Nissan Rogue, it remains the only vehicle in its class to offer a hybrid powertrain. That model, which is about 20 percent more fuel-efficient than the non-hybrid version, was part of a 2016 refresh that included revised sheetmetal and interior adjustments and an extension in the number of trim levels. For 2018 a new Adventure model, available in front- or optional allwheel-drive, comes on board with added fender flares, rockerpanel guards, black alloy wheels and slightly increased ground clearance. As with all other RAV4s, a four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission combo motivates the gasonly versions, while the RAV4 Hybrid uses a similar 2.5 engine connected to a continuously variable transmission plus two electric motors.

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 23/30/26 (2.5, 4x2) • Base Weight (lb.): 3,440

• Base price (incl. destination): $25,500

• Type: Mid-size sedan

• Type: Two-/four-door mid-sized pickup

• Engines: (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (206); 3.5-liter V-6 (301); 2.4-liter I-4 with 105-kilowatt electric motor (208, combined, Hybrid)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.7-liter I-4 (159); 4.0-liter V-6 (278) • Transmissions: Fivespeed manual; sixspeed manual (V-6); six-speed automatic (opt.)

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic (opt.); continuously variable (hybrid) • Drivetrain: Frontwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 29/41/34 (2.5, MT); 51/53/52 (Hybrid) • Base weight (lb.): 3,240

The Tacoma remains Toyota’s top-selling pickup, but it’s feeling plenty of heat from GM’s Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon midsizers plus the second-generation Honda Ridgeline. A 2.7-liter four-cylinder, is the base engine, while a more potent V-6 is optional. The I-4 is paired with a five-speed manual transmission; the V-6 gets a six-speed unit. The TRD (Toyota Racing Development) gets sport-tuned or off-road Bilstein-brand shocks, Multi-Terrain Select system that regulates the transmission, throttle and brakes for mud, rock or sand conditions, locking rear differential and a crawl control for extreme trail conditions. Toyota also swapped out the Double Cab’s standard wheel and tire package for 16-inch black alloy wheels fitted with Goodyear Wrangler All Terrain tires.

• Type: Four-door compact wagon

• Type: Four-door tall wagon

• Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4 (144)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.7-liter I-4 (185); 3.5-liter V-6 (278)

• Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT)

• Transmissions: Sixspeed automatic (I-4); eight-speed automatic (V-6); CVT (Hybrid)

• Drivetrain: Frontwheel-drive The C-HR, short for Coupe High Rider, was supposed to wear a Scion badge, but instead received a Toyota emblem when the decision was made to axe the Scion brand in 2016. The powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that’s paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The absence of AWD might disappoint those living in areas where that cruel weather condition called winter can make driving a challenge. Along with AWD there are a few extras not available to C-HR buyers, such as leather seat covers, power sunroof, navigation system, Apple CarPlay or Android infotainment, or even the option of subscribing to satellite radio.

• Drivetrain: Rear- /allwheel-drive

• Base price (incl. destination): $22,000 (est.)

• Drivetrain: Front-/allwheel-drive

As the shift to tall wagons (crossovers) shows no signs of abating, Toyota seems more determined than ever to infuse plenty of styling, comfort, fuel efficiency and performance into its star player. The eighth-generation Camry has undergone what could be considered Toyota’s version of radical surgery. Toyota’s designers extended the length and width only slightly, but they increased the distance between the front and rear wheels by a generous three inches for greater interior leg and knee room. The powertrain lineup that begins with a 206-horsepower fourcylinder, while a 301-horsepower V-6 is optional. The Camry Hybrid combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 118-horsepower electric motor for a combined 208 horsepower.

• Transmission: Ninespeed automatic

2018 TOYOTA RAV-4 HYBRID

• Transmission: Continuously variable

The automaker that recently became part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance is launching a five-passenger tall wagon that uses a name originally assigned to a long-retired two-door coupe and convertible. The Eclipse Cross slots between the sevenpassenger Outlander and the Outlander Sport, but the Eclipse Cross is equal to both in distance between the front and rear wheels. There’s also a nicely designed interior with a separate tablet-type touchscreen and an available head-up display. A console-positioned control pad operates the communications and audio systems that are displayed on the touchscreen. A standard turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes 165 horsepower (estimated) and links to a continuously variable transmission. Front-wheel-drive is applied to base models, while all-wheel drive is available or standard with upper trim levels.

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (241); 3.0-liter V-6, twin-turbocharged (329-396); 4.0-liter V-8, twin-turbocharged (603)

• Base Mileage (city/ highway/combined): 27/31/29 • Base Weight (lb.): 3,290

The eight-passenger Highlander is a popular alternative to a minivan, especially when equipped with available third-row seating; it has plenty of room for those who adorn their car windows with stick-people characterizations of their broods. Mechanically, the Highlander’s four-cylinder engine is only available on front-wheel-drive LE models, while the V-6 received a major overhaul and now puts out slightly more horsepower. The V-6 is more fuel efficient, aided by the installation of an eight-speed transmission that replaced the six-speed unit that’s exclusive to the base engine. The AWD Highlander Hybrid also received the reworked V-6, but as with all Toyota hybrids it sticks with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Toyota provides a number of key crash-avoiding safety features as standard equipment on all trim levels.

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 20/25/22 (2.7, 4x2) • Base weight (lb.): 4,130

2018 VOLVO S90/V90 • Base Price (including destination): $47,900

• Base price (incl. destination): $49,100 (S90); $50,950 (V90)

• Type: Seven-passenger utility tall wagon

• Type: Full-size sedan/ wagon

• Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter I4, turbocharged and supercharged (250316, R-Design; 400 with electric assist)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter DOHC I-4, turbocharged (250); 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged I-4 (316); 2.0-liter I-4 with electric motor (400)

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic The second-generation XC90 changed from the original in every way for 2017 and dropped 250 pounds in the process despite remaining about the same size. The T6 model uses a supercharged and turbocharged “Drive-E” four-cylinder. Additional pep is available from the all-wheel-drive R-Design version. Its T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid adds an electric motor to assist the gas engine. That increases output to a combined 400 horsepower, compared to 250 for the T5 model and 316 for the T6. This allows the XC90 to travel up to 25 miles on electric power alone. The T8 also gets up to 53 mpg in the city and 54 highway. The T6 and T8 hybrid each use eight-speed automatic transmissions.

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 22/29/25 (T5, FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 4,330

2018 VOLVO XC60

The sleek and shapely S90 sedan and V90 wagon are good lookers but, being Volvos, they do have their quirky touches, including a concave grille, “Thor’s Hammer” LED running lights and jagged taillights provide a measure of non-conformity. Turning the front or optionally all four wheels is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the T5 trims that produces 250 horsepower. T6 versions run with a supercharged and turbocharged version of the 2.0 puts out 316 horsepower. At higher rpm ranges, the turbocharger takes over. This unique engine, along with an 87-horsepower electric motor positioned near the rear axle, is used in the S90 and V90 T8 eAWD Plugin Hybrids. The system’s combined output amounts to 400 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard across the line.

• Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 23/31/26 • Base weight (lb.): 4,123

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic The five-passenger XC60 plays a critical role in the automaker’s increasing global popularity; the previous model accounted for about 30 percent of total sales for the brand. The new 2018 model is sleeker and far more artful than before. The front seats are especially well bolstered and the 9.0- and optional 12.3-inch touch-screens are surrounded by wood and aluminum garnish. Keeping the XC60 on the boil is a trio of four-cylinder engines, including a plug-in hybrid that adds a pair of electric motors for a combined system output of 400 horses and 472 pound-feet of torque. With an estimated 30 miles of electric-only driving range, the hybrid is ideal for commuting in gridlocked traffic. All models operate through eight-speed automatic transmissions.

2018 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE

Building the Auto Show...BY THE NUMBERS... • Base price (incl. destination): $21,300 (coupe); $25,500 (convertible) • Type: Two-door hatchback/convertible • Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter I4, turbocharged (174) • Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic

New turbo engine for all models; basic warranty coverage is six years or 72,000 miles — the new-generation Beetle will never come close to matching the original’s level of success, but it doesn’t have to. It’s slightly retro styling appeals to buyers looking for more than a cookie-cutter hatchback. For 2018, the previous turbocharged 1.8- and 2.0-liter gasoline-engine choices have been scrapped and replaced by a single all-new turbo 2.0 that’s standard in both hatchbacks and convertibles. This one is rated at 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque and can be paired with a six-speed manual transmission, or six-speed automatic. The Convertible’s power-operated soft-top opens and closes in 11 seconds and has a rollover system that deploys twin roll bars from behind the back seat.

It takes almost a week to set up the Auto Show, but teardown takes less than 48 hours.

The show covers approximately

About 400 workers build the Auto Show in 12,000 hours, using: • 30 miles of carpet tape • 4,000 square feet of signs • 11,360 feet of extension cords • 400 overhead quartz lights • 400 electrical outlets with enough electricity for nearly 500 homes

• Base price (incl. destination): $19,800 • Type: Four-door sedan

VW’s compact sedan is also the brand’s price-leader, but that doesn’t mean buyers get short-changed when it comes to style and impressive ride and handling qualities. The Jetta is also one of the few compact sedans on the market with such an assortment of manual, automatic and automated manual transmissions. This nifty little 150-horse powerplant is fuelefficient and will satisfy most drivers’ needs. More spice comes with the available 170-horsepower turbo-four-cylinder and 210-horsepower turbo-I-4 that’s standard in the sporty GLI. Added for 2018 is the Wolfsburg Edition that’s essentially a Jetta S with extra dress-up items plus fancier wheels. The Jetta’s option list includes increasingly popular safety items such as a blind spot monitor, cross-traffic alert when backing up, forward collision warning and parallel-parking assistance.

• Transmissions: Five-speed manual; six-speed manual (GLI); six-speed automatic (opt. on 1.4 and 1.8); six-speed automated manual (opt. on GLI) • Drivetrain: Front-wheeldrive • Base MPG (city/ highway/combined): 28/40/33 (1.4, MT)

• Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter H-4 (200-205)

The BRZ was originally created in concert with Toyota, which now markets its iteration as the 86 (previously the Scion FRS). Weighing in at less than 2,800 pounds is definitely one of the BRZ’s primary advantages. To aid turning and cornering capabilities, the BRZ’s powerplant is positioned almost midbody and sits low to the ground due to the horizontally opposed design. For 2017, Subaru made minor adjustments to the nose and tweaked the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. For 2018 a limited edition BRZ tS model that’s set up for both street and track use comes with a specially tuned suspension, Brembo-brand brakes, manually adjustable carbon fiber rear spoiler and unique interior and exterior trim.

2018 SUBARU LEGACY

• Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive Subaru’s best-selling model receives praise for its tough-when-itneeds-to-be attitude, passenger comfort and reliability. On good roads and bad, the standard all-wheel-drive system operates virtually unnoticed. But when required, the Forester’s mountaingoat capabilities make it a popular choice. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine can be upgraded to a turbocharged 2.0-liter H-4 on the top-end Forester, but comes only with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which is optional with the non-turbo engine. For 2017 The Forester received modest front-end styling revisions, added sound insulation and improved door seals for a quieter cabin and improved steering and suspension systems. Subaru’s Eyesight driver-assistance option now includes lanekeeping assist and can also be had with automatic reverse braking that stops the car to avoid hitting obstacles when backing up.

The Legacy combines the comfort of a roomy four-door with the ability of a near-off-roader, which is something that very few of its mid-size sedan competitors can come even close to claiming. Of course, that item is standard on all Subies and includes Torque Vectoring, a system that applies light braking force to the inside front wheel while turning to enhance steering control. The 2018 edition sees evolutionary updates to the car’s suspension and steering systems, resulting in better ride and handling and steering qualities. Both front and rear ends of the Legacy have been changed and there have been similar modest revisions to the interior, including the air conditioning unit. The base 175-horsepower four-cylinder and optional 256-horsepower-six cylinder engines remain unchanged.

Subaru remains solidly in the driver’s seat with the ever-popular Outback wagon and close kin to the Legacy sedan. Both models last received major refreshes in 2015 and have now received similar internal and external changes plus improvements to the suspension and steering rack that are engineered to provide improved ride and handling qualities. Unchanged are the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder and optional 3.6-liter six-cylinder engines. Both engines are connected to continuously variable transmissions. X-Mode includes Hill Descent Control, which keeps vehicle speed to a crawl when traveling slowly down a step and slippery slope. Note that Subaru’s EyeSight active safety suite is available and can now be had with reverse automatic braking and steering responsive headlights that pivot as the Outback turns.
