eaturing a fantastic array of drop-dead-dazzling vehicles, including high-end customs, collectibles, classics and more, Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions®, is back in town in a big — and we do mean BIG — way.
Highlights of the Palm Beach auction’s to-die-for docket include one of only seven supercharged F-code 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliners with a retractable hardtop plus a 1957 Ford Thunderbird F-code convertible that has been meticulously restored and finished in a rare Flame Red exterior. Both of these breathtaking beauties boast the supercharged F-code 300bhp, 312ci overhead-valve V8 engine. This year’s Palm Beach auction also showcases two sexy Porsche Carrera GTs from 2004 and 2005 - mid-engine supercars putting out over 600hp with a 5.7-liter V10 and 6-speed manual transmission — as well as an extremely lowmileage 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition still in the wrapper. With less than five actual miles on the odometer, finding one of the 343 Heritage Editions this pristine is extremely rare. In between the hot auction action, thrill-seekers feeling the
need for speed can mosey on over to the Ride ’N Drives and Thrill Rides, presented by premier sponsors Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge. After your heart rate slows down, be sure to check out an info-packed session of Meguiar’s Car Care Seminars. If shopping’s what revs your personal engine, you can’t go wrong at the Sponsor and Exhibitor Marketplace, THE place to be for those whose passion runs to specialized and/or vintage collectibles. Here, exhibitors offer a sensational array of products ranging from fashion-forward jewelry and clothing to art and unique automotive aftermarket products. Those looking for the inside scoop on buying and selling collector cars should be sure to attend the highly anticipated “Behind the Hobby” Collector Car Symposiums, where top experts offer tips on everything from what to look for when purchasing, viewing or inspecting a collector car to a primer
on engine sizes and output during the muscle car era. Clichés aside, last but certainly not least is the event’s ever-popular Automobilia Auction, which takes place from 9 to 11 each morning. Offering the opportunity to take a nostalgic trip back in time, this memory-lane event features authentic, one-of-a-kind collectibles sure to send you into smile-a-minute overdrive. From neon dealership signs, hood mascots and pedal cars to gas pumps, racing posters and garage relics, these authentic automotive items are all sold at No Reserve to the highest bidder regardless of bid price. So whether you’re primed to experience live auction action at its best, capture the car of your dreams or rub elbows with celebrities, don’t miss your chance to be part of an extraordinary celebration of automotive passion. “This year’s Scottsdale auction kicked off our 45th Anniversary year with one of the strongest events in company history,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We’re excited to continue that momentum with our Palm Beach auction, and we have an exciting weekend planned for what has become a true world-class lifestyle event in South Florida.”

THE PORSCHE CARRERA GT
FROM THE RACE TRACK TO MAIN STREET TO YOUR DRIVEWAY By Steve Magnante, independent automotive journalist
T
here’s an oft-repeated adage claiming that racing improves the breed. In no instance is this truer than in the case of the Porsche Carrera GT. Built between 2004 and 2007, this street-legal supercar rides on a chassis and suspension developed for Porsche’s 1998 LeManswinning GT1 race car. It’s mid-mounted 605hp 5.7-liter V10 also traces its roots directly to the race track, being an evolution of the power plant developed for the 1991 Arrows/Porsche Grand Prix racing team. WHAT’S IN A NAME
Even its name, Carrera, is Spanish for the word “race,” keying into Porsche’s first adoption of the cherished marque, first applied to a competition version of the 356A in 1955. With an original sticker price of $448,000, Porsche built only 1,270 of the highly anticipated supercars, of which approximately 604 shipped directly to customers in North America. Like every Carrera GT, the two pristine examples (Lot #428, a 2004 model, and Lot #400, a 2005 model) offered by Barrett-Jackson are each equipped with a 6-speed manual transaxle, controlled by a traditional
Porsche originally planned to build 1,500 of the modern Carrera GT supercars worldwide, but a 2006 change in U.S. air bag regulations influenced Porsche to cease production after 1,270 were completed. centrally located shift lever and floormounted clutch pedal. Unlike the so-called cutting-edge paddle-shifted semi-automatics found in certain competing supercars, the Carrera GT’s conventional gear switch arrangement gives the driver total control of every upshift and downshift. Even the ignition key is positioned to the left of the steering wheel, a nod to the LeMans starts of the mid-1950s, where drivers literally sprinted to their waiting race cars and jumped behind the wheel moments after the pistol fired. Though surrounded by soft, plush leather, a Bose sound system, air conditioning and tasteful brushed metal interior surfaces, the 225 mph speedometer and 10,000 rpm tachometer hint at the Carrera GT’s potential for exhilarating performance. Underpinning it all is a

LOT #428 2004 PORSCHE CARRERA GT POWER’S ON!
A key attraction to the Carrera GT is the artful presentation of its allaluminum, DOHC V10 power plant. Instead of hiding it under a solid panel, the engine lid includes twin blisters fitted with meshed screen inserts that hug the shape of the engine. Formed to continue the lines started by the dual roll-over hoops, the hinged lid protects the engine while venting heated air – and showcasing the cast-aluminum
But like all modern-era Porsches, one can certainly cruise the Carrera GT gently in normal traffic, or idle up to the country club valet without causing a commotion – other than many strained necks among gawkers stealing a second look. The race-capable nature of the car lurks behind a thin shadow. At lower engine speeds, the mighty V10 hums along quietly. But when prodded to its 8,000 rpm power peak, all 600+ horsepower are quickly summoned with a sound akin to a small fleet of Kawasaki Ninjas flying in formation in a concrete tunnel. If you don’t have access to a Carrera GT to hear this symphony, don’t worry. YouTube has plenty of action videos. Or there’s always the option of bidding on the two crossing the block at the Palm Beach Auction. Considering their limited production and the fact they were highly collectible the minute they roared out of the factory, this is an extremely rare opportunity to lay claim to two of Porsche’s final non-computerassisted supercars.

intake plenums and exhaust heat shrouds. Directly behind the engine bay is another cool feature in the form of a speed-sensitive tail spoiler. At speeds over 70 mph, the spoiler’s feet rise up out of the body, into the slipstream and away from the stagnant boundary layer. When activated, the spoiler generates over 100 pounds of downforce to help plant the rear tires at speed. Now if all of this sounds like serious race car stuff, well, it is.
