Seven Standout Hiking Trails Worth the Journey

With 300-plus days of sunshine, it’s no wonder Scottsdale has an extensive network of hiking trails spanning hundreds of miles, from up mountains to through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Whether you’re looking for an easy hike that a ords you a view or you’re a seasoned hiker looking to challenge yourself, these are some of the best hiking trails in the area.

Gateway Loop Trail (McDowell Sonoran Preserve)

Di culty: Moderate | Distance: 4.4 miles

This trail takes you on a scenic loop through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. It begins relatively flat before gaining in elevation and becoming rockier. Since it’s a loop, the second half is downhill. Take in the local flora and panoramic views. Parking can fill quickly on weekends, so arrive early.

Tom’s Thumb (McDowell Sonoran Preserve)

Di culty: Hard | Distance: 4.6 miles

This steep, quad-burning climb rewards you with one of the best dramatic viewpoints in the Valley. Known for its massive granite outcroppings, including the iconic one named the “thumb”—a spire reaching for the sky and named in honor of Tom Kreuser, the first Arizona Mountaineering Club member to summit the formation—this popular trail is a favorite for sunrise hikers and photographers. There are no water fountains along the hiking trail, so make sure to bring plenty of water.

Di culty: Moderate | Distance: 3.1 miles out-and-back

Brown’s Ranch features a manageable incline that leads to a summit with unobstructed desert vistas and fewer crowds than Scottsdale’s more popular hiking trails. It features unique rock formations, and the terrain is generally smooth. The trailhead features interpretive exhibits about the human history of the Preserve.

Sunrise Peak Trail (McDowell Sonoran Preserve)

Di culty: Moderate to hard | Distance: 3.8 miles

A steady climb to one of the best sunrise viewpoints in Scottsdale. Hikers flock to it in the morning as it is partially shaded, then the day brings full sun. Note that it can be rocky and challenging. However, from the summit, you can see Fountain Hills, South Mountain, Camelback, Four Peaks Wilderness, and Superstition Wilderness.

Pinnacle Peak Trail (Pinnacle Peak Park)

Di culty: Moderate | Distance: 4 miles out-and-back

This trail o ers a smooth surface, although it still allows for a workout. Enjoy scenic views of boulder formations and North Scottsdale’s luxury desert landscape. It’s perfect for a weekday morning or golden-hour active walk. There are rock-climbing routes in Pinnacle Peak Park, too.

culty: Easy | Distance: .5 miles

This easy-going Scottsdale hiking trail was constructed to allow everyone to experience nature. It’s an innovative, interactive experience for those who want to learn more about Arizona’s unique Sonoran Desert, and is accessible not only for everyday hikers but also for those in wheelchairs or with walkers and those who are hearing impaired. The Scottsdale hiking trail is also filled with signs that illustrate the nearby plants and geology.

Di culty: Easy to moderate | Distance: 4–5 miles, depending on route

A quieter alternative to Gateway with broad desert views, rolling washes, easier hiking trails, and plenty of wildlife spotting. Lost Dog is great for casual hikers, families, and anyone looking for a more meditative desert experience.

Three Arizona Powerhouses Unite to Create State Forty Eight Wines

A new iconically Arizona wine is on the market, and it was created by a trio of power players who have historically championed Arizona-made goods. State Forty Eight Wines is the brainchild of Rod Keeling, owner of Keeling Schaefer Vineyards, Mike Pigford, owner of Arizona Wine Events and Mike Spangenberg, CEO and co-founder of State Forty Eight. The wine recently debuted at the 10th Annual Arizona Wine Festival and Kierland Fine Art & Wine Festival at Scottsdale’s Kierland Commons shopping center and will soon be at restaurants and retailers across the state in addition to being available for tastings and purchases at the Keeling Schaefer tasting room in Willcox, Arizona – where 75% of the state’s grapes are grown.

Rod Keeling and I came up with the concept a year ago and that’s when we reached out to Mike at State Forty Eight about a collaboration. Together, we ironed out the details and from there this label was born.

Creating a wine that was as budget-friendly as it was delicious was also an important goal for the trio, who created two varietals – the State Forty Eight Red (a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Durif grapes, also known as Petite Sirah) and State Forty Eight White (a blend of Viognier and Picpoul Blanc) – which are both proprietary blends that are 100% estate grown on the Keeling Schaefer Home Place Vineyard, and their Rock Creek Vineyard.

Both vineyards, and the winery, are located 10 miles south of the Chiricahua National Monument in Cochise County.

“We wanted to create a new premium brand to be sold in major markets at a value price point,” said Rod Keeling, owner of Keeling Schaefer Vineyards in Willcox, Arizona.

“The concept of an Arizona theme for a wine is not new but was attractive to us due to our lifetime of living in Arizona and a family history of ranching in since 1919.”

Keeling said he and Pigford are excited to be connected with such a popular and beloved company as State Forty Eight.
