Surf Havana Surf Club Advocating for the Legalization of Surfing in Cuba

In the island nation of Cuba, surrounded by the sea on all sides, it's hard to imagine that there are only about a hundred surfers. In a country where surfing was once illegal, there was no surfing culture, no surf shops, and no surfing equipment. However, this didn't deter the creative spirit of the Cuban people from pursuing the waves. The Cuban surfers have been working tirelessly to gain recognition for the sport from the government. In Havana, amidst the challenges of material scarcity, this project aims to repurpose materials from collapsed buildings. It envisions the creation of a surfing club on a beach in Havana – a place where surf training, surfing culture exhibitions, hands-on surfboard crafting experiences, and a surf shop coexist with a Cuban-themed bar. This surfing club actively promotes the popularization and development of the surfing movement.

The optimism of Cuban surfers has allowed surfing to take root in this parched soil. But surfing has been illegal on the island since its inception.At the same time, because of ideological issues, surfing is considered to be an "American sport" and its legalisation is hardly on the agenda. The Cuban surfers hoped that surfing would be supported by the government, that they could form their own clubs and that they could build a national team to represent their country in the Olympics, and thanks to their efforts, the ban on surfing in Cuba has been lifted, but surfing is still not supported by the government. But the Cuban wave riders are not discouraged, life's trials and tribulations have brought them resilient optimism, and they are pinning their hopes on the 2024 Olympics, where the government will once again see the limitless possibilities that the sport of surfing offers.

Over the last three decades, rural areas in China integrated into cities, with Guangzhou having 138 urban villages. Some regions completed urban transformations, while others are in progress, guided by the three old demolition policies. Despite urbanization-induced shifts in identity and institutions, villagers struggle to adapt promptly. Changes in traditional fishing and farming patterns caused economic loss for farmers, and the absence of a tangible land base challenges the preservation of old farming memories. Empowering development models are needed for 'urban villages.' The new design aims to revitalize these areas through an integrated community model, covering agriculture, residence, and tourism. It seeks to stimulate economic development, improve local conditions, a n d a d d r e s s s o c i a l i s s u e s l i k e c i t y- v i l l a g e disconnection.

Moving to a new country is often something to be celebrated. However, for new international students arriving in the Netherlands, this is often a stressful time.Large-scale immigration in Amsterdam has resulted in a housing crisis, which has particularly affected international students. Shortages of student accommodation have led to homelessness, adding to the challenges of adapting to a new life. Furthermore, cultural conflicts in the new environment, coupled with universities and workplaces serving as the sole social hubs, create a closed atmosphere, making it difficult to establish interpersonal networks. I plan to create a youth hostel-style community center, integrating daily social activities into the design. The goal is to address housing challenges, enhance interaction between locals and international students, and help students from diverse backgrounds assimilate and find common ground with the local community.

In the contemporary world, there is often a sense of spiritual emptiness and a lack of heroes. Standardized architecture and mundane spaces surround us. It is crucial to reflect on the emotional impact of architecture and the messages it conveys. As humans, we experience a range of emotions, from anger to joy, which we express through our facial expressions and body language. Architecture serves as a medium for expressing emotions. In the design process, complex architectural functions are broken down into spatial narratives composed of specific themed scenes. Each scene addresses plotlines, emotions, and spatial requirements. Humans interact with and integrate into space through sensory pathways, which are organized accordingly.
