THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS CULINARY SHOWCASE This Christmas, on Friday 18th December, the Club
will bring one of the season’s most familiar traditions to life in a very different way, with an exclusive culinary showcase inspired by The Twelve Days of Christmas.
Designed especially for members, the evening promises to be a celebration of festive flavours, culinary creativity and the simple pleasure of gathering around a table at Christmas. Taking inspiration from the much-loved carol, the Club’s culinary team will reinterpret its twelve days through an imaginative menu that combines seasonal ingredients with a contemporary approach. Guests can expect a dining experience that goes beyond the traditional Christmas dinner, with each course offering a playful nod to the characters, gifts and imagery of the carol. From the partridge and pear tree to the golden rings, the menu will invite members to discover a new interpretation of familiar festive references, with thoughtful presentation and plenty of culinary theatre along the way. The Twelve Days of Christmas provides the perfect creative starting point for an evening such as this. Its sense of abundance, celebration and spectacle lends itself naturally to the table, while its familiar imagery offers endless possibilities for the Club’s chefs to explore. For members, the showcase will be an opportunity not only to enjoy an exceptional meal, but to experience the Club at its most convivial. Good food, conversation and a little festive indulgence will come together in an evening designed to celebrate the season and the community that makes the Club so special. There will, of course, be surprises along the way. While the full menu is best discovered on the night, members can look forward to a succession of beautifully considered courses, each revealing another part of the Twelve Days story. At a time of year when traditions take centre stage, this promises to be a fresh and memorable take on one of Christmas’s most enduring ones.
FIRST SENIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR RIYC CADET By Fiachra McDonnell I was incredibly
I’m hoping to compete there and represent Ireland, with this being an opportunity to qualify Ireland for the LA 2028 Olympic Games, adding even greater significance to the event.
excited to finish the season at home, with my first Senior World Championships taking place in Dún Laoghaire, hosted out of the Royal St. George Yacht Club and National Yacht Club.
As always, I’m incredibly grateful to my family and to everyone who supports me and helps get me to the start line with the best possible chance of performing. I’m particularly proud to be a member of the Royal Irish Yacht Club and honoured to represent the Club on the international stage.
It has been a hugely rewarding season, with plenty of valuable experience gained competing on the senior circuit. A highlight was finishing second at the Arenal Regatta, while I was also delighted to successfully defend my national title. The national championships came after a challenging couple of weeks in hospital due to an illness, which unfortunately set back my training, so I’m particularly pleased to be back to full fitness and training hard. I looked forward to competing at the highest level once again, and there was no better place to do it than at home in Dún Laoghaire. Racing against the best sailors in the world was a fantastic opportunity to test myself and continue building experience at senior level. Reflecting on the week, it was brilliant to race a World Championships in my home waters, in front of everyone from the Royal Irish. It was very light all week with tricky shifty breezes. Strong first beats put me in good positions at times in qualifying with a highlight being 1st around the top , however I couldn't convert these advantages into high quality finishes and I ended up 105th overall. There's a lot to take from that and build on. Now, the focus will turn to further high-performance training, with a potential trip Down Under to Australia on the cards to work on some key areas of technique. All of this preparation will build towards the World Sailing Championships in Brazil in January.
The support I’ve received from RIYC has played an important part in my progress, and I’m very grateful to everyone in the Club who continues to get behind me. I hope that continues as I head into a big block of winter training in Australia and the World Sailing Championships in Brazil in January, all building towards LA 2028. I’m looking forward to the weeks ahead and hopefully making the Club proud as I take on some of the biggest challenges of my sailing career so far.
RIYC SILVER CUP CLASSIC CAR RUN Despite many religious figurines being placed outdoors, the weather Gods were not cooperating. Sunday started with heavy downpours that discouraged many from taking their precious vehicles out of their cocoons and garages for purposes of entertainment and tyre kicking. Those who did face down the rain and brought their cars were much admired and 22 participants took the scenic drive to Castletown House for a fabulous tour. Lunch was had on return to RIYC and many stories of driving adventures and challenges were shared. The trophy was awarded in absentia to Michael Cotter. Many thanks to John Peart and Edward Maughan for arranging such a super day out!
RIYC SAILING NEWS Irish product. We also welcomed the support from our local business community RIYC 195 WEEK - CELEBRATING ITS including Yaya Boutique and Frewen & Aylward as well as Dubarry for their sponsorship of prizes. MEMBERS A wave of good weather greeted the start of the Club’s 195th TEAM RIYC Finally much thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Anniversary commemorative celebrations, sponsored by Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin which featured a Classic Regatta on 20/21 June and culminated in the annual RIYC Regatta on 27 June. The RIYC 195 week was launched by Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, who attended the Club on the eve of the Classic Regatta.
CLASSIC REGATTA The Classic Regatta attracted various fleets from across the bay and beyond including the colourful Howth 17s , the Dublin Bay 21s, classic cruisers and dinghies. A variety of classic dinghies such as the International 12 (George Oakshott 1912), the 17ft Dublin Bay Mermaids (John B Kearney design, 1932) and the O’Brien Kennedydesigned IDRA 14s (1946) alongside Water Wags participated. Historic cruisers taking part included Hal Sisk’s Peggy Bawn, Guy Kilroy’s Margueritte, Michael Ryan’s Saki, the Sisk family’s Marian Maid and the Arthur Robb-designed 37ft yawl Verve, owned by Brian Comerford and winner of the Concours d’Elegance.
RIYC who pulled out all the stops and as always stepped up to the occasion for a memorable week of celebrations.
DARKNESS INTO LIGHT 2026 By Valda Boardman. Thank you for your continued support of Sail Darkness into Light. The weather wasn’t on our side this year and while a lot of big boats got out in the bay (albeit pretty lumpy!) others walked the piers instead. It is a very special event and one I’m particularly proud of as we do this version, doing what we love! We’ll go bigger and better for 2027 and hope the weather gods are on our side. Weather aside, we are doing something amazing to support and encourage funds for Pieta.
ADULT SAILING SUCCESS By Vice
Each year between April and September, on Tuesday evenings, we run our Adult Sailing programme. This serves as an introduction to sailing and to the RIYC. Over the three six-week courses we had a total of 74 participants, our highest ever number. The courses aim to teach the basics of sailing and to whet the participants for further adventures in sailing, racing or cruising. Commodore, Joe Conway.
As an innovation this year we also ran, in conjunction with the INSS, two introduction to racing courses, and these proved popular also. These courses could not be run without a large group of volunteers, who skipper the boats and drive ribs to act as safety boats. This year we even had two recent graduates of The Club regatta the following weekend saw over 100 boats the course who had gone on to complete Powerboat level 2 entered but unfortunately many of those did not compete on the Saturday of the courses coming back to help out as rib drivers! Equally well received was Hal Welsh IRC National Championship at Sisk’s art tour and was of great interest for Pwllheli, completing a notable late-season sequence of victories. RIYC CADET TIM NORWOOD SECURES BRONZE AT MELGES WESTERNS By Stephen
A BUSY SUMMER FOR RAM JAM By Austin Kenny. The
Breen. RIYC had two entries in the first ever Melges 15 Western Championships held in Lough Derg Yacht Club. Tim Norwood and Alex Haughton travelled along with 12 other Melges 15 to a sunny Dromineer for the first ever ‘away’ event for the class. The sailors were rewarded for their commute with a super welcome from the host club and some classic lake sailing. Congratulations to Tim and Becky who secured a well-deserved Bronze and are lining themselves up for further podium finishes as they perfect their skills on this exciting new class.
Ram Jam J80 team came 2nd at the J80 UK National Championships, part of Poole Regatta in May 2026. The title was won by the slimmest of margins, with Simon Cameron's 'Intergalactic' team defeating Ram Jam thanks to having one more first place. Unfortunately, Ram Jam were denied a final chance of the title on the third day as racing was cancelled due to the lack of wind.
RIYC HOSTS IRISH SCHOOLS TEAM RACING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2026 By Stephen Breen. The club hosted the Irish Schools Sailing Team Racing National Championships on 25th & 26th April 2026 welcoming over 160 students from 24 schools to Dún Laoghaire for the highlights of the schools sailing calendar. More than 150 races were completed off the West Pier in champagne conditions, with fast-paced team racing on close display for the public throughout. Schull, the defending champions, took top honours, with Schull Seals second and St Andrew’s College third. A Saturday evening BBQ at the club rounded off the weekend, bringing together sailors, families and organisers. Schools team racing is one of the most effective pathways into the sport — tactical, accessible and built around teamwork. For many of the young sailors competing, this was their first experience of national-level competition. “We are seeing first-hand how junior sailors who find their feet in Team Racing become Team Racers in College and continue sailing later on in life.” said MJ Geraghty, RIYC member, Irish Schools Sailing Leinster representative and Head of Sailing at St. Andrew’s. “Hosting an event of this scale puts the RIYC at the heart of that journey for hundreds of young people from across the country — and that is worth all our volunteer time.“ MJ added as she thanked the club and volunteers.
TEAM RACING GAINING GROUND AT RIYC By Stephen Breen. Team Racing is making its mark at RIYC with two teams of six representing our club at the recent Elmo Trophy in Dun Laoghaire. Twenty eight youth teams from all over Ireland battled it over two days in early August. With 10 boats racing at any one time and over 200 youth sailors and volunteers on the water it was open to anyone to win.
Following our silver medal at the J80 UK National Championships, Ram Jam headed to Bilbao for the J80 European Championships and a significant step up in competition. The event proved every bit as challenging as expected. The start lines were fiercely contested, the local conditions were complex, and the fleet included some of Europe’s finest J80 sailors. The Spanish and French teams were particularly formidable, with Olympic, World and European medallists represented across the fleet. Although the results did not always reflect our progress, we improved throughout the event and recorded our best finish, 23rd, on the final day. A costly black-flag penalty contributed to our final position of 39th from 48 boats. We were also the fourth-highest-placed team from outside Spain and France, and finished 11th of 18 boats in the World Sailing Corinthian classification for amateur crews. More importantly, the championship was an extraordinary learning experience. Despite the intensity of the racing, our fellow competitors were welcoming and generous with their knowledge. New friendships were formed, along with invitations to race in Santander, Valencia and Bilbao again. Our visit was made especially memorable by the reciprocal relationship between RIYC and the Real Club Marítimo del Abra (RCMA). We received an exceptionally warm welcome from RCMA and thoroughly enjoyed its beautiful clubhouse and incredible facilities. Their hospitality made us feel at home throughout our stay. The event was on another level, we return as better sailors, stronger competitors and a more experienced team. We are hugely grateful for the encouragement and support RIYC has given our campaign.
A TOUGH BUT EXCITING SEASON FOR SASKIA It’s been a tough season, and while the results haven’t always reflected the level of execution we know we’re capable of as a top team, we’ve learnt a lot along the way.
Our Cadets have been training in a fleet of fireflies that the club has chartered from Irish Sailing to help re-establish the popular sailing discipline at RIYC. Special thanks to very generous volunteer coaching by Fiachra McDonnell in between his training for the ILCA Worlds. Thank you Fiachra!
It was really good to finish the season racing at the final Grand Slam in Los Angeles and come away with 3rd place especially in the home of the 2028 Olympic Games.
In partnership with Irish Schools Sailing, RIYC hosted the National Team Championships earlier this year and we are also hosting the Leinster Championships in November.
There’s a lot to review and reflect on from this year, but we have real confidence in the team around us and the foundations we’ve built. We’ll take the lessons, keep working, and come back stronger next season.
Our Cadets are now training for the year ahead including Regional and National events as well as The Shanahan Cup and Fastnet Trophy. If you'd like to get involved, either sailing or volunteering please reach out to Stephen Breen (srbreen@gmail.com) or Katy Kelly.
SUCCESS FOR XTENSION
THE ELMO CUP REVIEW By Joshua Stewart The Elmo Cup was a great experience. All the fun we had connecting with new people and different levels of racing was a fantastic experience. Day one started tough with high wind and learning all the different levels of everyone in a racing environment. Day two we came back stronger than ever with a great race against RIYC 2 with them coming out on top of us this time. Can’t wait to hopefully continue team racing through the Irish. It is a great learning experience that should be continued for the younger generations to learn the rules of racing and get into racing in a less stressful environment, with a team of people that may be older or younger to guide them through it all.
Xtension, helmed by Trustee, David Beattie and crewed by Pat Shannon, won the Lough Ree Yacht Club Regatta keelboat division on the August bank holiday weekend, following a closely fought five-race series. Beattie’s boat counted two race victories, a second and a fourth to finish on eight points.
SAIL FOR CANCER Davie Ryan organised an incredible sailing and social evening on Friday 21st August in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. He raised in excess of €5.5k, including €1,500 from the Dublin Bay 21s, which was a phenomenal amount. He and his volunteers worked really hard to bring it together with entertainment on the deck, an on the water quiz and some great prizes. All in all a great night in the Club and a big well done to all participants.

FROM THE HOUSE - A LETTER TO OUR ESTEEMED MEMBERS Dear Reader, One might be forgiven for believing that, with such a splendid summer upon us, the business of the Club has been entirely devoted to sailing, racing and enjoying the particularly agreeable weather. And indeed, there has been much of all three. Yet, dear reader, it would be a mistake to assume that matters behind the scenes have been quite so leisurely. There has, in fact, been considerable activity within the House, and I feel it only proper that our members should be apprised of the latest developments. OF DINING, AND THE OPINIONS OF MEMBERS In May, a new feedback form was introduced for our catering services. Members may now share their thoughts on the various dining options available throughout the Club, whether their observations be complimentary or, shall we say, somewhat less so. The purpose is not merely to collect opinions, but to encourage a genuine dialogue between members and the catering team, allowing the staff to respond where appropriate and make adjustments where required. The feedback received thus far has been most gratefully received. One hopes, naturally, that this exchange will continue, for few things are more useful to an establishment than knowing precisely what its members think. A MATTER OF SOME IMPORTANCE: TWO SURVEYS There are also two surveys on the horizon, and both deserve the attention of our membership. The first will be a long-form survey distributed to all members. This will provide an opportunity to share experiences, opinions and ideas, and, more importantly, to help shape the future of our Club. I would encourage every member to take part. The future of the Club is, after all, rather too important to be left to the opinions of only the most vocal among us. The second survey concerns the House itself. A comprehensive survey of the Clubhouse has not been undertaken since 1998/99, when Project 2000 brought about many of the building and development works that we continue to enjoy today. As we look towards our third century, it seems an entirely appropriate moment to take a rather more considered look at this historic building. The proposed survey will examine the condition of the listed Clubhouse and provide a strategic assessment of its future. The intention is to establish precisely what is required to conserve, maintain and adapt the building, whilst ensuring that it remains fit for purpose as a modern yacht club. It will also identify the risks to the building’s long-term preservation and enable us to establish a phased and prioritised programme of works.
And, perhaps of equal importance, it will allow the Club to plan financially for those works in a sensible and orderly fashion. One hopes, dear reader, that such careful planning will ensure that this much-loved House remains structurally sound, historically significant, environmentally sustainable and thoroughly fit for the generations yet to come. THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE CHANGING ROOM TAPS There are, of course, matters of rather greater urgency. The saga of the taps in the downstairs gentlemen’s changing rooms and W.C. has, by now, become something of an enduring tale. Since their installation, the taps have been serviced repeatedly, with batteries, sensors and even the complete tap units being replaced on numerous occasions. And yet, despite these considerable efforts, they have remained stubbornly troublesome.
RIYC CLUBHOUSE NEWS Therefore, the four existing taps have been removed and replaced with a considerably simpler “push-on, push-off” variety. Any remaining functioning components will be retained in storage, where they may be called upon to assist with the equivalent taps in the ladies’ changing room. It is hoped that this particular chapter may be brought to a close within the next few weeks. AN UNWELCOME DEVELOPMENT IN THE CAR PARK There have, regrettably, been a number of Incidents involving damage to members’ cars in the car park over recent months. An examination of our existing CCTV coverage revealed that one area of the car park and one area of the boat deck were not currently covered by the system. This omission has now been addressed. Two additional cameras are installed, both of which will link to the existing security system. These should provide full CCTV coverage of the Club grounds and, one hopes, a rather greater degree of reassurance for members and their vehicles. AND NOW, TO THE SEASON AHEAD…Finally, dear reader, there is considerably more pleasant news. An extensive autumn and winter programme is being prepared, with something to tempt almost every member of our community. This year brings two particularly welcome additions: the reintroduction of the Golf Group and a new Pilates class. There are also some splendid speakers lined up for our history, sailing and cruising talks, and I would strongly recommend consulting the events calendar and marking those dates in your diary. One would not wish to discover, too late, that one had missed an engagement everyone else was discussing. And so, as summer gives way to the season ahead, we look forward to seeing you around the Club. Until our next correspondence, dear reader, do take care—and do keep your eyes upon the events calendar. Yours, as ever, The House. (Apologies to Lady Whistledown. If you know, you know).

RIYC CELEBRATE GOLD MEDAL AWARD WIN! This well-deserved recognition highlights the vital role in-house catering plays in the Club’s identity and sense of community. Looking ahead, this achievement provides a superb platform for the future and raises the bar even higher for the seasons to come. With a continued focus on innovation, service, and the finest local ingredients, the Club looks forward to building on this success and further enhancing its reputation for excellence
with two particularly memorable reasons to linger over lunch: a celebration of rosé and an indulgent seafood lunch, each offering its own take on the season.
The Rosé Lunch brought together members for a relaxed afternoon centred around one of summer’s most effortless pleasures. With glasses of chilled rosé in hand, guests settled in for a leisurely lunch, enjoying good food, conversation and the convivial atmosphere that makes a long summer lunch feel like an occasion. The mood was elegant but unhurried — the perfect setting to raise a glass to the warmer months. Later in the summer, the club turned its attention to the sea with a dedicated Seafood Lunch. On this occasion, members were able to dine al fresco on the terrace, making the most of the sunshine and the outdoor setting. The menu celebrated the best of seafood, creating a fresh and indulgent lunch designed for enjoying slowly, ideally with something chilled in the glass. Together, the two events captured the spirit of summer at the club: beautiful food, generous hospitality and the opportunity to take time out with friends and fellow members. Whether sipping rosé or settling in for a long lunch on the terrace, both occasions offered a chance to enjoy the season at its most sociable and relaxed. As summer draws on, it is these leisurely afternoons — good food, good company and nowhere else to be — that become some of the most memorable moments in the club calendar.
This award places the Club among the very best in Irish member's club catering and is a proud reflection of the dedication, professionalism, and consistently high standards demonstrated by the Catering Team throughout the year. It celebrates not only the quality of the food, but also the care, creativity, and attention to detail that make the clubhouse such a welcoming and enjoyable place for members and guests alike.
RIYC & DIY SOS: THE BIG BUILD This summer marked a truly special milestone for the Leonard family, as their journey to bring Hannah home takes a transformative step forward. With the support of the DIY SOS team and an extraordinary group of volunteers, the family home in Bray has been carefully taken apart and reimagined to become fully accessible—making it possible for Hannah to return and live comfortably with her family once again.
The project has captured the spirit of community at its very best. Volunteers from across the region, including Members of the Royal Irish, have come together, giving their time, skills, and energy to help create a space tailored to Hannah’s needs. It is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people unite behind a meaningful cause. The Royal Irish Yacht Club was honoured to play a small part in this remarkable effort by providing meals to the dedicated volunteers on Monday and Tuesday evenings of the build. Supporting those who have given so much to the Leonard family was a privilege, and we are proud to stand alongside our members and the wider community in contributing to such an important initiative.

A PORTHOLE TO THE PAST: THE SERIES CONTINUES By Jane
Our Club history series 'A Porthole to the Past' returns in September with an account of Dr Ninian Falkiner's memorable cruise to Norway, the Shetlands and St Kilda in 1956 in his Dublin Bay 24 footer Euphanzel. We hope that Royal Irish members have fond memories of the 2026 summer cruising season including beautiful blue Mediterranean days and warm evenings, long lunches at Greek tavernas perhaps, and afternoon swims in crystal clear waters. Any memories of rough seas, fouled props, blocked heads or equipment failure are hopefully receding into the distance. Mahony.
