PRESENTAZIONE

PRESENTATION

For its particular geographic position linking Iran, the Indian region, Asian republics and China, Afghanistan has always been the keystone of the largest Continent. Afundamental strategicjunction, for centuries its cities and valieys have been the paths oftrade caravans on their "Silk Way". The know/edge ofits hist01y along with politica/ events, which.have caused the Coun/J·y to become both a victim and a protagonist on the international stage, appears detenninant in an attempt to compose the Afghan mosaic and guarantee peaceful coexistence of different peoples in a Countty comingfrom more than twenty years of uninterrupted conjlicts, which ha ve jeopardised relational structure, socio-economie system and values underlying the social re/ationships. Today the internationa/ community vouches for the on-going process of reconciliation. Afghanistan has its constitution, legitimate President, lawjùlly elected Government and Par/iament. Howeve1; the situation is stili unstable, there are serious infrastructure problems: shortage of electric energy, disas/J·'OUS state of already limited water .systems. Therefore,a new economie and social basis for the nation is badly needed. In the scope of the ISAF Mission the !talian Army is invo/ved into this stabilising an d building process. The sector under our Coun/Jy's responsibility covers the vasi province ofH erat, which, apart from its centre, comprises other important cities, such as Badghis, Ghor ancl Farah. The effort, lavished by our contingent, is also aimed at the safeguard ofthe en.ormous artistic and archaeological heritage ofthe province. A valuable contribution to this particu/ar aspect is the remarkable volume by Elena Croci, Lieutenant of the Special Rese1ve. !t gives us an opportunity to comprehend better this importan! facet of a Country with a mi/lenary history, abounding in unique an d irrep/aceab/e vestiges. These are the notes of a journey over this province with its enchanting minarets and other marve/Lous maste1pieces of Herat's architecture, the most gracefu/ and inviting of the Afghan cities, with its Timurid monuments, its rich vegetation ofpines, stirring restless/y in the strong foca! wind. This is also a work which gives a description ofthe genuineness ofthe Country, the freedom ofthe nomacf !ife, the thousand-Y.ear hist01y, embodied in numerous monuments (infact, it was defined the "Florence ofAsia''), the spel/-casting beauty of its endless natural Landscapes. The book tells us about the dialogue of the peoples living in this !an d, an exchange of lmowledge, which allowed clevelopment ofan area of coexistence and co-operation ofdifferent civilisations, bearing the marks of important events and cultura/ inspiration. With her characteristic sensitivity and great passion for art and archaeology, mingled with /ively ancl gripping descriptions ofthose distant fands, the Author in/J··oduces us into a world of inva/uab/e treasures, humanity's inestimab/e heritage. Another commihnent ofthe Jtalian military in this Province is to preserve these wonders, prevent their irretrievab/e Loss. This is a privilege to cherish and a challenge to win. This is another aspect revealing the ~ffort, the sign ofchange pursued by our Army in orcler to establish the minimum conditions for peaceful coexistence as we/1 as the foundations fora socia/, economie, institutional and cultura/ reviva/ of the Counny Brigadier Generai Giorgio Battisti

INTRODUCTION The significant presence ofthe Jtalian military in Afghanistan, specifìca!ly in Kabul and Herat, has given /ife lo, introduced and inaugurated a trend, so far never explored in the course of a mission, that is, communication through culture. Tfle project flas been deve/oped on the way, because tflere have been many black ho/es ofscientific-cu/tural kind. Tfle retrieval ofthe plwtographic materialas we/1 as logistic support flave been the elemenls which have incited enthusiasm for this project intended lo restore Hemt's hislorical memo1y, which has appeared a stumbling block to overcome because of the lack of writlen an d ora/ historical evidence. Thanks to the excellent relations with Jta/y, l managed to reconstruct a brief histol'y, making use of the recent technical publications by UNESCO, SPACH and AKTC. Howeve1~ these Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) flave faced the same difficulties while solving the problems of reconstruction and maintenance of ancient techniques. The element, which impressed me most during my stay, was actually speaking to people, w/10, even tlwugh educated, were not ab/e to provide me with any reliable reference regarding Lhe artistic and cultura/ heritage. The only memol'y survived in their mil?ds and continuously emphasised was the one of invasion and destruction, besides the appare11t calm with no liberty and possibility of expression over the las t years. Jndeed, ve1y little has been written aboul Afghanistan an d its histOI'Y, apart from th e momenls an d events of world's importance, sueh as the destruction of the Buddha of Bamyan in 2001 and short news about the Kabul Museum. Therefore, this investigation ofmine is a little contribution to the knowledge ofa Countty rich in histmy, whose visible monwnenls are si leni guardians ofa ve1y ancient lime and a stratification ofthe passages of great warriprs an d commcmders. Over the time I discovered a less manifest history emel'ging.from t he perception offeelings: al/ that once reigned behind th e portals and is hidden in the narrow streets ofthe old city. Ajourney motivated by curiosity, intended lo extend knowledge and supported by the ltalian Army.

While landing with our C130 emotion stir up and they come back throughout our stay in this land so different from lta/y. Apart from sunshine, wind and dust, which are the main climatic e/ements characteristic of the summer period, the long journey that separates you from your Country intensifies this feeling of diversity. However, curiosity wins over tiredness: the first impressing images, besides those of the /ta/ian, Spanish, French and American military, are the children swarming behind the barbed-wire fence which protects the military airport of Herat.

Curious children observe us. They are /aughing and p/aying noisi/y.During my entire stay, l never saw a sad tace. Even those bearing traces of illness hid a smile, which kept reminding me of how simplicity can win the "spleen" that often affects our children in the western world eve n from early age ..

Furthermore, along the way to the "Camp Vianini" base, l see thousands of motorcycles ridden by men, with women behind them, wearing a lightblue burqa, those ghost women whose sweet and tender looks l discover later.

My arriva/ coincides with the fast hour of schoo/, so l see children so different from each other running across the street.

The normality seems to have been kept to a/so in the times of war. l turn round and see a ruined house: the most tangible and immediate sign of the past of this piace, of the thirty years of incessant war which drifted the Country towards a state of extreme backwardness.

Solo osservando bene, vedo.

l need to observe carefully to see the extreme decay which reigns in the houses, the lack of a sewer system, electricity being a luxurious advantage, water not being provided to houses. Surely, children can't remember much, and this is why they are the only ones who smile. l believe that if women could show their eyes, the long-/asting sufferance of these places wou/d be perceived immediately. The present picture revea/s a great movement, confusion and a whole set of contradictions, which are worth mentioning.

Afghanistan is an interlacing of different ethnic and tribal groups which have lived there shoulder to shoulder over the centuries. /t is bui/t up of the Pashtun, Tajiks, Hazara, Uzbeks, Turkmen, Aimak, Baluch, Brahus, Nuristani, Pashais, Pamirs, Kirghiz, Oisilbash, Mongo/s (a/so ca/led Moghul), Arabs, Gujars, Kohistans, Wkhis and Jats. To the above we must add a number of the Hindu, Sikh and Hebrews. These ethno-linguistic groups differ in their /anguage, accent, ethnic origin as we/1 as in essential cultura/, physical and religious characteristics. Opportunities offered by big cities have brought these various peop/e together in a c/ose working contact, giving birth to an inter-ethnic and multicultural society where national identity has assumed a homogenising and tyingup rate. Nowadays, the people first cali themsellles Afghans and then Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazara or Uzbeks. In large urban areas, such as Kabul and Herat, tribal identities have been absorbed and rep/aced with new metropolitan terminology - the Kabulians or the Heratis.

Each period - lranian Zoroastrian, lndian Buddhist, /slamic Nomad - left traces of its cultura/ presence, which every following invader tried to erase to stop its influence and take away the power. Herat has been the crossroad of these passages and stays and has absorbed each culture and withstood its destruction, and today it is the most representative city, reflecting the cultura/ and artistic mosaic of what was once "the Florence of Asia".

The Pashtuns The Pashtuns are lndo-Europeans with lranian origins who speak Pashtu. Settled mainly in the south-west of the Country, they form a society devoted primarily to agriculture stili characterised by the usage of the watermill. Some are craftsmen while others stili lead a nomad fife. According to an estimate m ade in the seventies of the fast century, the Pashtuns represent the most numerous ethnic group, nearly half of the population, counting up to 13 - 14 million. The /ack of a reliab/e genera/ census drives to deductive suppositions and calculations. One of these was made in 1980 by Louis Dupree, American anthropo/ogist, who esteemed this people as about 6.5 million (Princeton University Press). Nowadays, the number has further increased, /eading to a major presence of this group along the border with Pakistan. Worth mentioning is the fact that a pari of the Pashtuns speak Dari and /ive in Kabul, Herat and other provinces.

HERAT- Nell'antichità- breve cronologia HERAT- In allciellt ti111es - brief chrollology

HERAT- Nel medioevo HERAT- In the 111idd/e ages

!

By the lime Cyrus of Persia conquered Herat, in 500 BC, it was already an important city from the strategie point of view. In 330 BC Alexander the Great further strengthened its fortifications and gave the city the name of Alexandria in Aria. From that moment on it became a symbol of power, continuously contended by different tribes (Se/euicids, Partgians, Kushians, White Huns) unti/ VII AD when it was sacked by the Turks and passed under Muslim dominion (645 AD).

Subsequently, following the Mango/ invasion around 1250, great part of the Ghorid art was destroyed. lbn Hawkal provided us with a precious description, dating back to the X century, which testimonies that Herat was "a rich mode/ city with a mosque in the centre of such beauty, admired by the neighbours of Khorasan and Sijistan".

Nel medioevo

In the milldle ages

31

Of a particu/ar interest is the fact that in 1200 AD many milis were bui/t in the area of Herat. Their traces can stili be seen. In the seventies, one of these could stili be admired in the o/d city. These windmills exploited the "wind of 120 days" blowing from June to September, stili ca/led "bad-i-sad-o-bist ruz". Few-numbered and smallsized wooden vanes represent e!ements completely different from our c/assic mode/s.

Their origin is quite ancient: it is believeÊJ that they preceded Chinese and European milis. In VII AD records , we find the first mentioning of Arab geographers who describe the landscape of Herat and its windmills.

La cittadella Qala-ì-Ikhtiyaruddin The citadel Qala-i-lkhtiyaruddin

Unti/ June 2003 the citadel was used by the "military" personnel. When the Soviets arrived they made of it their dwelling. In the nineties the citadel became the main settlement of mujaheddins. Talebans' dwelling and refuge par excellence, the fortress was subsequently transformed into barracks for /smail Khan's troops unt(l the moment when different non-govermenta/ organisations and the same city authorities decided to attach this symbol of Herat's history cultura/ importance.

Presently, rehabilitation works and clearing of mines are at the fina/ phase, which wi/1 al/ow the further scientific digging intended to give a more precise dating to this stronghold enclosing, in its foundations ancient history going back to Alexander the Great's invasion in 330 BC.

La fortezza Qala-ì-lkhtiyaruddin The fmtress Qala-i-lkhtiyaruddi11

Erected in IX-X AD on the ruins of a more ancient construction, the fortress stands on a rectangular surface of 1300 x 1400 metres, in the north-west part of the citadel. So far there has been no accurate archaeological excavations, however, it is wide/y be/ieved that at its base there are stili the ruins of Alexandria in Aria. The bastions and the towers have been rebuilt different times, especially under the Kart dynasty, after the Mango/ period (XIV AD) and by Shah Rukh, when the Timurids gained contro/ over the city.

The fortress represents a monumental area of about 33000 square metres. The main entrance is on the south side and it /eads to a wide corridor dividing the two main sections of the building. The Arg is a regu/ar area designed for defence purposes. /t has many turrets and positions on the top, dwelling for commanders, prison cel/s and various hai/s.

The lower citadel served as a munitions storage, soldiers dwellings, stalls and stab/es. Along the external wa/1 there are as many as 18 towers of maximum height of 31.4 metres.

Crossed the threshold, l ask my interpreter if l can visit ali of it, considered that l am a military and a woman. There seems to be no problem obviously, but of course it would be better a few hours away from the afternoon's prayer. The corridor which leads to the main courtyard intended for the prayer, is made of marble. When walking a long the corridor silence grows. In the centrai part l notice that worshippers are sitting on the sides, in the cove-

red gal/eries around the centrai area. Shoeless, walking a/ong the side walls, most men are intent on their prayer or reading. Many are university students who come here to study in peace, undisturbed. The mosaics and co/ours are intense and the marble floor is so polished that it makes sun reflection dazzling. With the most discretion l photograph everything which l believe of a historical and artistic importance: the mosaics, the inscriptions framing the whole of the courtyard, the west side, which l know is the most ancient, the iwan, open vaults which fade in mysterious dark places. About twenty minutes later l start feeling observed. l do not want to be indiscreet so l 'l/ come again.

La Moschea del Venerdì Masjid-e-jami

The Friday Mosque- Masjid-e-jami

Although the Friday Mosque is the second most ancient construction in Herat, preceded on/y by the citadel, the o/d texts provide quite a little information on its origin. The structure of the palace is typical of four-iwan lranian mosques (a cavity, a vault atrium). The main vau/t with two minarets on its side is situated in the west part, inside the courtyard of 90 per 58 metres. On the apposite side, at the entrance, there are two more iwan, unusual/y deep. Ancient man of letters, lsfizari ascribed in 1405-6 the foundation of the mosque to Ghorid Sultan Ghiyat-ud Din Sa m and his successor Shahab-ud Din in about 1200. /t is known, however, that there was a more ancient mosque. The Ghorid structure was damaged by the Mongols to be partly reconstructed later by the Kharti at the beginning of XIV. During the Timur period the mosque was spared and it reached its peak of splendour around 1500, when Herat acquired the epithet "the Florence of Asia". In the next one hundred years, though, the mosque was despoiled and once again restored thanks to Shir Nevai, the vizir (the minister) of Husayin Baykara. Numberless finishing touches were being put far three hundred years, in particu/ar under the Persian direction of Safavide shahs. In modern times, a restoration work was started in 1943 and it stili continues today. In fact, there are works aimed at recovering the ceramic coating, missing in some parts of the building.

The Friday Mosque

As a genera/ impression, the mosque appears to be a mainly Timurid structure, undoubted/y resembling the other historic building of the city, such as the Gazar Gah or the mauso/eum of Gawhar Shad.

On the west side of the main façade there is what most recal/s the Ghorid period of the mosque: an arch, or better, a porta/ hidden by an identica/ structure but of the Timur period. The former has been discovered quite recently permitting a comparison of decorative richness and artistic evolution. In its Ghorid part a clear Persian influence can be noticed; magnificent turquoise (Persian blue) Kufik inscriptions feature in Persian the name of the founding monarch, sultan Giyasuddin. These inscriptions are drawn on the background of flora/ decorations made of fired brick. The upper part of this arch testifies their evo/ution: from geometrica/ motifs to the more complex and baroque expressions of the Timur period; thé colour used in 1200 as an exception, in 1400 becomes a common trait, and every single centimetre is coated with e/aborated mosaics of thousand shades.

There are only few remains of what once was the Musal/a. !t used to be a typica/ structure with four iwan and a minaret at each corner (this /ayout is witnessed in a precious photograph dated 1916). Three ofthose minarets have col/apsed. Two during the earthquake in 1931 and one more in 1951. As for the minarets that nowadays support the Friday Mosque, they were at least twenty in the originai construction. In 1885, during the second AngloAfghan war, a part of the Musalla complex was brought down to a heap of rubble. In a sketch made by an English officer shortly before the partial demolition a great state of neg/ect of the main portai with only one minaret in the front part of the compiex ca n be easily noticed. The Husayn Baykara's madrassa occupied the surface of about 100 x 100 metres. /ts outline is stili traceable by the four visible minarets. That time minarets were about 40 metres high; however, taking into consideration the missing top parts, it is presumed that original/y they were even higher, decòrated with blue and turquoise geometrica/ ornaments framed with white mosaics which nowadays are partially preserved. The present-day mauso/eum, commonly ascribed to Gawhar Shad, presumably was a part of two constructions situated in the centre of a sma/1 pinewood c/ose lo the channel (ONG Spach has planned two trees in order to revive the pinewood). lts architecture disc/oses important innovations, including a bit stumpy construction with a bulb-shaped dome of about 25 metres high.

Robert Byron* visited Herat in 1933 and took pictures of the then-existing minarets of Musa/lah and of the Mausoleum of Gawhar Shad. These precious documents, kept at the Courtauld lnstitute of Art (GioA), recorded a clear im age of the construction before the collapse of some of the towers and modern restoration works. /t is presumed that once there were twenty minarets, Byron's writings mention seven of these stili in good condition, while the photographs and sketches give an idea of a mausoleum in the middle of the minarets whose structure does not correspond to the present one. Three Anglo-Afghan wars (1838-1919) made their disastrous contribution to the co/lapse of many of these "chimneys" bui/t during the Timur period. An earthquake of 1951 along with the Soviet occupation, whose testimony is bome by the ho/e in the fifth minaret, caused continuous flaking and co/lapse of the blue and turquoise ceramic external covering. Fra le sue opere ricordiamo anche The Station (1928), the Byzantine Achievement (1929) e First Russia, Then Tibet (1933). *Robert Byron (1905-1941): an erudite gentleman, eccentric and aesthete, Robert Byron wrote innovative works on Byzantine civilisation and /slamic architecture. So, in the period which was happy and rich for this kind of literature, the thirties, Byron managed to write a book that stands out as a "masterpiece" (Chatwin)- The Road to Oxiana, first published in 1937. The west part of the city is sharply dissected by a long two-way asphalt road, bui/t in the eighties. Ti/l some time ago, lorries, cars and other means of transport were allowed to traffic through the site with the remaining minarets, so exposing the fragile fifteenth-century structures to vibration and smog. In particu/ar, the fifth 55-metre-high minaret seems on the verge of collapsing at any moment, due to a visible crack in the base which caused its inclination. And if only that happened it would be reduced to a heap of co/oured bricks. UNESCO intervened in the problem availing itself of the expertise of ltalian Professar Giorgio Macchi (the expert who restored the Leaning Tower of Pisa). La Musalla - complesso monumentale di Gawhar. Shad The M usai/a - The Gawhar Shad lllOnU111ental C0111plex

In 1845 a young French traveller described the Timurid structure of which little remains today as "one of the most elegant an d finished architectonic complexes of Asia".

The interior of the mausoleum and the dome is one of the most representative of existing examples of /slamic art. Pointed interlacing arches, recalling the Gothic style, split the sphere into different segments, which in their turn are divided into polygonal multi-parts (mukarnas) decorated with lapis lazuli, go/d, ochre and white ornaments. The pigments in lapis are made of precious stones (lapis /azuli) coming from Badakhshan. The exterior decoration of the dome has in its upper part a band of rectangular medal/ions of white flora/ ornaments on a blue background. The m idd/e part bears an inscription, nowadays unfortunately damaged, while the inferior one is decorated with /arger rectangular portions: dark blue hexagons with stylized gilded flowers separated by blue and white rectangles. Under a closer scrutiny, the external decoration of the mauso/eum is definite/y less sophisticated than the one of the minarets. The exact number of the tombs sheltered by the complex is not yet certain. Some sources suggest twenty gravestones, but, on his joumey, Yale saw only five of these, while Byron only three. That would not be surprising, considering that the foca/ tradition allows the tombstones to be reused different times. These seem to belong to Gawhar Shad (1457), her sons and other two sultans. !t is widely known that Husayn Baykara ordered the construction of his own mauso/eum nearby, but, unfortunately, in the course of time it was destroyed. Today on/y one gravestone is left and visible.

/t was bui/t in 1960 and contained a /arge collection of antique texts in Arabic and Persian (Farsi). In 1997 the Talebans sacked the library taking possession of as many as 22000 volumes which were partly so/d to Pakistan, the United States and partly burnt down. Nowadays the library possesses books of the recent period, mainly of scientific, linguistic and literary interest. The oldest dates back to 1955. The daily attendance is about 400 students (both women and men). The library is strictly divided into two sections: for men and women, separaled by long rows of bookshelves.

Testi scritti in lingua dari e farsi , pochi in inglese.

" And tell the believing women to subdue their eyes, and maintain their chastity. They shall not reveal any parts of their bodies, except that which is necessary. They shall cover their chests, and shall not relax this code in the presence of other than their husbands, their fathers, the fathers of their husbands, their sons, the sons of their husbands, their brothers, the sons of their brothers, the sons of their sisters, other women, the male servants or employees whose sexual drive has been nullified, or the children who have not reached puberty. They shall not strike their feet when they walk in order to shake and. reveal certain details of their bodies. Ali of you shall repent to GOD, o you believers, that you may succeed!" (Sura 24 or Light Sura (AI-Noor) , verse 31)

Entering the Centra/ Library in uniform caused a wave of curious /ooks. Women are rigorously separated from men and the books are the only intermediary between the two worlds. l address the director who is ready to help

and l ask if l can see both the books and the women's part. The volumes are arranged in alphabetica/ arder, by topic. However, al first sight, it becomes clear that there is not much to consult. Most texts are in Dari or Farsi, very few in English. The man in charge of this recently restored building tells me about different events this p/ace of culture has lived through: continuous thefts and the Ta/ebans' prohibition of access to women. Many, a great many volumes have been taken away. Now assistance from the university and different cultura! organisations is patiently expected. Naturally, l rea/ise that there is no point in /ooking far some sources regar.ding the artistic and cultura/ heritage but, stili, l try to explain my problem to the director. In the women's area l am approached by women students who speak a good English. When they come to the women's section they hang on their burqa and getto study, sipping their tea. !t seems a ''padded" world where you ha ve to speak in a low voice. They are dressed very fashionably, and, although they wear a veil, ali of them have a mobile phone. Their curiosity is enormous: they ask me al/ kinds of questions about the western worfd which they know through television, they smile at me and ask if in Europe the choice of the husband is real/y free. What shou/d l answer? The choice is individua/ but, anyway, the approva! of the family is important. Their faces do not change the expression, maybe they gel resigned but their enthusiasm does not diminish. They con fide to me their expectations: teaching is maybe the most sought-after profession but there are a/so students who want to graduate in engineering. They project their future and their English, which they studied secretly at home during the four years of the regime, is admirable. In fact, in the lower section English courses are the most asked for. They are happy to talk to a western woman. They say they are /ucky to have the opportunity to study. l ask if their burqa makes them feel /ess free. We are in Herat, which, compared to Kabu/, is a smaller city. While in the capita! there are more women who wear a simple veil, here it happens quite more rarely. Al/ of them answer to be obliged by their families, and while the veil is considered a beauty item, the burqa is really uncomfortable. l do admire them, their courage to face such a difficu/t world far women. We communicate in English, but our /ooks go deeper and l hope they understood that solidarity of al/ of us, western women, was my message. Then, we leave each other simply saying 'bye-bye".

lt was not an easy task to spot those p/aces. The Non-Governmental Organisations in Kabul suggested many of them. However, in order to find the sites in worse conditions or those hidden, l had to ask thousands of questions to the /oca/ peop/e. Quite often, these places had different names so l had to repeat, explain, ask for descriptions of what they cali "an o/d p/ace". The concept of something "o/d" assumes in Afghanistan a meaning completely different from ours, as does the idea of time. "0/d" may be something which appears otd but, as the matter of fact, is just ruined, as it happens when the "very o/d" refers to a building /uckily survived intact in the thirty years of war. This assumption is right, considering that the ancient cistems truly ho/d an advanced architecture, not used any more, insomuch the techniques, the know-how have been /ost. During my research l met different key-keepers who opened the doors and gates to the p/aces where history showed itself immediately. For example, a humble shoemaker opened forme the door, which led to the Timur cistern ca/led Hauz-E-Vazir, the best preserved and most representative of the effort and architectonic e/egance of 1400, in my opinion. Another one brought me to an o/d synagogue, nowadays transformed into a school, which stili bears origina/ external decorations. The extremely crowded school a/so pitched some tents for the students: curiosity and amazement in front of such artistic beauty have been obscured by the urgent necessity of spaces and teaching aids for education. In particular, talking to the teachers in two of the schools, former synagogues, t realised that their desire to provide education to ali the children, swarming in crowded classrooms, was strong and sincere. l found it admirab/e that those peop/e burdened themselves with numerous problems, both /ogistic (to keep girls and boys separated) and educational. A higher education would give future generations the possibility of a better fife and the knowledge of the extent of devastation caused by the war. After the flight of the ghetto community in the late seventies, during a recognition of the Hebrew artistic heritage in 1998, some synagogues and other typica/ constructions were discovered, severa/ of which are stili in partly good conditions. The buildings ca/led Mul/ah Ashur-Yu and Gùl are situated in the section of Bar Durrani and Momada, in the north-west and south-east of the o/d city, the section which once was known as "mahal/a-yi musahiya", or, "the Hebrew quarter". Besides, il appeared that the present-day hammam (Turkish bath with some detai/s that reca/l the ancient Roman frigidarium and tepidarium) Hajji Muhammad Akbar Bath or Hammam-e Yahduiha nowadays used by the Muslim community, has its roots in the Hebrew tradition and culture. As far as the synagogues are concerned, only one of these is used today for re/igious services, as a mosque (the synagogue of Gu/, transformed into the mosque of Bela/), the others have been made into schoo/ buildings or private houses.

HERAT nascosta The hidde11 HERAT

THE TIMUR CISTERNS Water reservoirs are of extreme necessity, particularly in war times. Considered that Herat was in the past a protagonist of various sieges, it appears obvious to find /arge wells al/ over the city. In fact, the first thing invaders a/ways tried to para/yse were channels supplying the city with water. They date back to XVIII century, because in ancient times it was wrongly be/ieved that the spring water of Herat was sa/ty. In the Timur period (XV century) the cisterns were quite numerous, both in the city and in the neighbouring villages. Hauz-i-Zamzam is one of the most ancient, bui/t in 1428 by Shah Rukh. The biggest and most famous is the cistern of Charsooq, situated in the centre of the o/d city, in the south-east part. /t was erected in the early seventeenth century by Hassan Khan Shamlu, who became governar of Herat in 1634.

Having analysed 1000 dwellings, the commission dre w up a perimeter limiting the area intended for the application of an urban development pian which would allow construction only after having submitted the projects to the commission for the preservation of attistic-cu/tural heritage of the city.

Five kilometres north-east from Herat, in the vii/age of Gazar Gah, there is the homonymous shrine erected at the foot of the tomb of Kohoja Abdul/ah Ansari. The shrine represents one of the most compiex architectonic monuments of the lslamic tradition. Gazar Gah means "white, faded land". /t is plunged into the green vegetation of the gardens and has always been a noble p/ace for the palaces and tombs of great Viziers of Herat. The first mention of this area dates back to IX century when in 1049 a monastery (khanaqah) founded by Sufi hermit Sheih Amu, was erected. Phi/osopher and mystic, he died while praying at the age of 84. He was a/so mentioned by Byron . Few literary sources report the construction of a madrassa during the Ghorid period, around Xli - Xl/ AD. Little remains of it- a sma/1 celi for prayer (chillah khana), which, however, could be of a previous period. Chingiz Khan's invasion plunged Herat into a dark age of distruction. Subsequently, in the Timur period (around 1425) Shah Rukh gained the possession of the area and made the ancient ruins flourish again, adorning and stratifying the ancient schoo/ of prayer with drawings and ornaments. The shrine unfolds in more directions. /t tums eastsouth and west through typical iwan, arches and vaults characteristic of the ancient orienta/ architecture with its flora/ motifs and decorations, some of which represent Mecca and Madinah. Exquisite jigsaw inlay works and mosaics in ceramics and majolica make the reading of this harmonious whole of places of prayer more difficult. "Everyone goes to Gazar Gah", wrote Byron in 1930. Gazar Gah is the destination for many families on the holy days. Coaches and cars let out women, men and children in this p/ace considered sacred by everyone. For western people this piace could seem a cemetery rather than a shrine, for its main courtyard is full of marble gravestones. The most eminent families in the province of Herat are buried here. Next to Gazar Gah an impressive mausoleum rises. This is the burial p/ace of /smahil Khan's son, Mirwais Sadiq, tragically died in a gunfight in 2004. My craving for an art masterpiece was satisfied in this piace, too. To the north of the courtyard, on one of its sides there is a door, usually locked, which guards one of the few works of art known to everyone: Haft Kalam, a blackmarble sarcophagi dated XV century and decorated with astonishing engravings, which were reputedly cut with seven different points.

The darkness deepens and l can not hide some uneasiness but, accompanied by my escort, l decide to go on, since everything seems ca/m. Thousand of tunnels, c/ouds of dust, /ittle narrow streets with gardens and little mud-and-straw houses. l see some women wearing burqa, other just a simple veil. Il ponte di Pul-i-Malan (1504) The bridge of Pul-i-Malall (1504)

The Hari Rud is the river which flows from Herat to the province of Ghor, passing the minaret of Jam. There is an o/d road used by carts and caravans that crosses it. The bridge, linking the two banks, is ca/led Pu/-i-Malan (the bridge of Ma/an). According Mukkadasi, it dates back to X century. /t is a very large monumental structure, supported by 26 arches, both pointed and rounded, originating from different periods of its one-thousand-year history. Historian Byron, who wrote a /ot of notes during his stay in Herat at the beginning of XX, asserted that, even if reconstru'cted different times, the Pulì-Ma/an bridge stands on the ancient foundations which unti/ now stretch out, forming a sort of a barrier on the waterway. An ancient folk legend attributes it to Bibi Nur and his brother Bibi Hur who spent a long time gathering eggshel/s which they mixed with c/ay to produce an extremely so/id materia/, the base of this most ancient passage between the two banks of the river.

". Rory Stewart. In Afghanistan, Ponte alle Grazie, Milano, 2005 pag. 187.

The Persian blue tesseras, the colour of an Afghan winter sky, on the frieze of the tower said: Ghir.assudin Muhammad fbn Sam, the King of the kings ... ".

The Hari Rud is the river, which flows from Herat lo the province of Ghor, passing by 450 km of ravines, valleys and high/ands and c/imbing up to the altitude of 2100 meters. A different landscape, an atmosphere suspended in lime, lightened by the sunrise at about five in the morning lo fade at seven in the evening. Emotions and feelings of the day seem to reflect in the pink light of the sunset over the surrounding mountains, which surpass the altitude of 4000 meters and are covered in snow from the end of September lo the end of June. Only seven hours from Chagcharan the minare! of Jam rises immense, a silent witness of a val/ey equally hidden and voiceless. In both provinces, of Herat and of Ghor, the minare! is a typical symbol of the West part of Afghanistan. In fact, it is always pictured on carpets and in various paintings in state residences. Many of archaeo/ogica/ expeditions, including the Italia n ones, set off for this enchanting and remote piace intended lo carry out research and digging, but they a/ways had to take into consideration the c/imatic conditions of this !and. In the morning, at about e/even o'c/ock, at the beginning of September, the temperature rises up to twenty-five degrees and drops dramatically later, after dawn,up lo two or three degrees in the night. The only witness of what some scholars be/ieve to have been the capita/ city of the Ghorid dynasty, which reigned in Afghanistan from 1148 to 1214, is the minare! of Jam, which, apart from its role of calling up for the prayer, assumes in this strategie position a/so the function of a look-out of the neighbouring area. This might have been the reason why Chingiz Khan did not destroy it on his march in 1221.

II minareto di Jam

Tlze mi11aret of Jam

The Minaret of Jam, 63 metres high, is a fired-brick structure, which is believed to have been origina/ly coated with turquoise ceramic ornaments. lt was built around 1194, probably, at the behest of Ghiyath adDin Muhammed (1163 - 1203) to commemorate a victorious battle. Chingiz Khan's invasion in 1221 AD brought destruction ali over the Country, but the minaret, out of reach, was not discovered. Jam is situated in the province of Ghor, at about 300 km from Herat, on the way a/ong the river Hari Rud, along the valleys of this rugged mountainous area, stili difficult to reach today. The Ghorid dynasty occupied this territory from Xl century unti/ the arrivai of the Mongols. The minaret was forgotten for many years. Actual/y there is no mention of it in the notes of travellers, including Byron's. In 1957 a French expedition discovered it. Luckily spared by the Talebans, Jam remains one of the precious few witnesses of the Ghorid dynasty. In the area around the minaret interesting finds were discovered, such as crockery, go/d coins, other va/uab/e objects to witness the antique exchange, which a/so included /uxurious goods, proving high standard of lifestyle and artistic sense of this dynasty. /t is believed that Jam was a mosque or even a madrassa. lt has the remnants of fired-brick flooring with geometrie patterns. Juzjani, one of the major sources of the Ghorid period reports the memories of a great flood washing away the mosque and bringing damages to the whole area. Today the minaret is in danger because of the fragility of its sttucture caused by continuous erosion of the base which stands almost on the riverbed. UNESCO has taken the measures of protection of the minaret, so in 2002 Jam was included into the list of the World Monument Fund - the eu/turai patrimony of world's interest to protect.

SPACH Society for the Preservation of Afghanistan's Cultura! UNESCO (www.unesco.org) The ongoing and initiating UNESCO projects involve the areas of Kabul, Herat and Jam. UNESCO takes profound care of the Kabul Museum through the activity of SPACH, which has the task to draw up a thorough catalogue. In Herat, in particular, UNESCO plans to restare the Gawhar Shad Museum and the fifth minare! currently in danger to fa/l and temporarily supported with steel cab/es. SPACH: Society for the Preservation of Afghanistan's Cultura/ Heritage (www.spach.info) Thanks to the UNESCO funds, SPACH is carrying out a macro-project, which intends lo draw up a complete catalogue of the items of lhe Kabul Museum. Presently, the Museum is not equipped wilh any computerized support, display cases suitable to ho/d precious objects nor wilh an appropriate illumination system. There are no publications. The only pholographic records consisl of o/d pictures daling back to 1978. lf is a long-term project considering lhe scarcity of the funds. Il lries lo reach a uniformity in application in fine with AKTC as far as the personnel is concerned, supported a/so by ISIAO. AKTC (www.akdn.org) There are different macro-projects already afoot or jusl initiating undertaken by AKTC. In particular, among lhe main on-going commitments in Herat, there is restoration of two antique cislerns, lhe façade of Gazar Gah and recovery of the Qala-i-lkhiyaruddin fortress inlended for a cultura/ cenlre. The philosophy underlying these projects is to support the population through a specific lechnical training for historic buildings restructuring. A particular attention to the ancient building techniques requires a longer lime, but the works are surely more so/id and of a major duration. Presently, the resloration of the regal gardens of Bahe Babour in Kabul has been going on fora year and a ha/f. The gardens with an annexed cultura/ centre for the public is due to open in March 2007. ARIC (www.aric.adb.org) ARIC has its main offices in Peshwar and its chief activity consists of gathering materials concerning Afghanistan's history, especially in the period between 1978 and 1992. Starting from 2000, the Associati been filing and creating series of microfilms of such documents, which wi/1 be stored in one of the wings of the ne w Kabul Universily.

li ERAT - Bibliografia

A tal proposito va citato il libro di Nancy Dupree "An historical guide to Afghanistan", Ed. La sua seconda edizione del 2004 (Edward Girardet and Jonathan Walter, Co- editors: Cha rles Norchi and Mirwais Masood) è aggiornata con tutti i fatti di questi trent'anni, ma più tecnica. lt has not been an easy task to retrieve the materia/ for this brief generai survey on historic-cultural heritage of Herat. Various pieces of the "Herat mosaic" consist mainly of technical texts, special sites, notes, drafts of projects, some of which ha ve never been put to practice due to the conflicts or other supervening events and of short essays of scholars who fully committed themselves to this country. In this connection we should mention the book by Nancy Dupree ·~ H i storica/ Guide to Afghanistan", Ed. Nancy Hach Dupree, 1977.
