As November arrives, many of us are making plans for Thanksgiving gatherings and the upcoming holiday season. Amid the joy and anticipation of those celebrations, let us also pause to honor another important November day, Veterans Day, when we express gratitude to the men and women who have served our nation in both war and peace.
The date of November 11 carries great historical meaning. On that day in 1918, an armistice was signed between the Allied nations and Germany, marking the end of World War I. The following decades would see November 11 recognized first as Armistice Day and later, in 1954, renamed Veterans Day to honor all who have worn the uniform of the United States.
Today, Veterans Day remains one of our nation’s most meaningful observances. It reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy were secured through courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty. Many Riverton residents, both past and present, have served in the Armed Forces, and countless families have supported loved ones in uniform. To each of them, we offer our heartfelt thanks.
Please join us for Riverton’s Veterans Day Program Monday, November 10 at 7 p.m. at the Sandra N. Lloyd Community Center, 12830 S Redwood Road, Riverton.

As the Christmas season approaches, I also encourage residents to help us honor those who rest at Riverton City Cemetery by sponsoring a wreath through Wreaths Across America. This year, more than 390 veteran graves will be remembered with a wreath placed in their honor. To sponsor a wreath or learn more, visit rivertonutah.gov/ wreaths.
Enjoy patriotic music performed by the Riverton Jazz Band and refreshments following the program as we come together to honor our local heroes. This event provides a special opportunity for our community to personally thank
Veterans Day reminds us of what truly binds us together. Service, sacrifice, and love of country are values that transcend generations. As we gather with family and friends this month, may we carry forward the spirit of gratitude and unity shown by those who have worn our nation’s uniform. Riverton is a stronger and better community because of them.

I have often stated that my goal is to help Riverton City be a place where we can “Love Where We Live.” In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to acknowledge the people who really make a difference in making this a great community: the Riverton City employees. Often, when we interact with them, it’s because we have a problem. But every day, we forget the benefits we enjoy because of their hard work and dedication.
I turn on my tap, and clean water comes out. I drop my trash in a can, and every week it is hauled away. I flush my toilet, and everything goes away. I drive to work, and the roads are smooth and clear. I play in the parks or walk my dogs, and I enjoy a beautiful, fun experience. I sleep at night safe from the fear of theft. If there is an accident or fire, I know help is coming.
I enjoy this lifestyle because every day, city employees go to work dedicated to doing their very best. Are

there occasional problems? Sure—but when notified, they quickly do all they can to fix them.
This month especially, and hopefully in the months ahead, let’s stop looking for the negative and instead find all the ways things are good and positive. Let’s call out and show our appreciation for the people who make Riverton such a great place to live. We really do have a lot to be thankful for, and as we focus on that and the people who create that environment, Riverton will continue to be a place we can “Love Where We Live.”

The event will take place on Monday, December 1, 2025, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Riverton City Park, located at 1452 W 12600 S, Riverton, Utah 84065. Santa will arrive right at 6:30 p.m. sharp, so guests are encouraged to come a little early to catch his exciting entrance. The event is free and open to all, making it a perfect family-friendly evening to kick off the holiday season.

As winter approaches, Riverton City encourages all residents to take extra steps to stay safe when traveling. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can create hazardous conditions, but with proper preparation you can reduce risks and keep yourself and others safe.
Before the first big storm, make sure your vehicle is ready for winter. Check that your tires have adequate tread and are properly inflated or consider switching to winter tires for better traction. Test your battery, as cold weather can reduce its strength. Ensure your windshield wipers are in good condition and that your washer fluid is rated for freezing temperatures. Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze-up and to ensure you have enough fuel if you become stranded.
Every vehicle should carry a basic winter emergency kit. Items to include are blankets, gloves, a flashlight with extra batteries, jumper cables, an ice scraper, bottled water, non-perishable snacks, and a first-aid kit. A small shovel and sand or cat litter can help provide traction if you become stuck.

Winter driving requires patience. Slow down, allow extra distance between vehicles, and give yourself plenty of time to stop. Bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads often freeze first—use caution in these areas. Never use cruise control on icy roads. If conditions are severe, consider postponing travel until roads improve.
Check on neighbors who may need assistance, especially seniors or those with limited mobility. Offer help with shoveling or rides when it’s difficult for them to get around. Community support goes a long way in keeping
