July 4 is always a big deal here in Riverton, but this year it is going to be even bigger. That is because on July 4, 2026, we will be celebrating, along with the rest of the nation, the semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of America. We have had several events leading up to this very special day. Please see the last page of this newsletter for a list of all the events.

I especially want to highlight the musical 1776. Only two cities in Utah were approved to perform this play, so it is a great honor. We are asking parents to leave children under

the age of five at home due to the stirring and serious nature of the production.

It has been a pleasure to meet with residents and staff members as they have read the book 1776. The general sentiment is one of increased appreciation for the challenges, sacrifices, and struggles that accompanied the birth of America, its ideals, and its purposes. Residents have shared that they were surprised to learn that:

•The war was long—eight years.

•The troops grew discouraged. Battles were lost, and the promised pay was slow in coming.

•The British army was better provisioned. American soldiers were cold, hungry, and poorly clothed.

But in the end, the battle was won, and a great nation was born.

Reflecting on Freedom as America Turns 250

Independence Day will be the most memorable Epocha, in the history of America.

A few years after the commemoration of America’s Bicentennial in 1976, I moved with my family overseas. We had many great experiences in that country, appreciating the people and the culture. However, we soon found ourselves in the middle of a revolution. We lived under martial law and faced numerous delays and setbacks before we could get back to American soil. I remember waiting at an airfield in groups of twenty, watching the sky for the Pan Am planes to come and evacuate us. All the passengers would erupt in applause as we took off and landed at each stop along the way before we finally made it home safely.

Last summer, as I was knocking doors and talking with the residents of Riverton, people would ask me why I would have any interest in participating in local government. My experience of living overseas, along with others, helped me to be aware of and appreciate the freedoms we enjoy, sparking my interest in civics and government. We live in a great

Like John Adams said, there are many ways we can celebrate our nation’s indepen-

dence this year. Here in Riverton, we have the third-largest parade in the state. Riverton Town Days is the best celebration I can imagine! America 250 Utah is asking people to join in organizing a potluck in your neighborhood in July. You might also celebrate by providing service or by voting in this year’s elections. I am grateful for this land and the opportunities and freedoms offered to us. Let’s celebrate our country together with our friends, families, and neighbors! q

Use fireworks safely outdoors with adult supervision, water nearby, and away from combustible materials.

As summer celebrations begin, Unified Fire Authority and Riverton encourage all residents to celebrate responsibly and make fireworks safety a top priority. Fireworks are a long-standing tradition during Independence Day and Pioneer Day celebrations, but they also create significant fire danger during Utah’s hot and dry summer months.

fireworks are restricted in their neighborhood due to wildfire risk, open space, or hazardous conditions. Residents should always confirm restrictions before lighting fireworks. Under Utah law, fireworks are legal to discharge from July 2 through July 5, and again from July 22 through July 25, between 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. On July 4 and July 24, discharge hours are extended until midnight.

Town Days Rodeo - 3 Days of Excitement!

Thursday, Friday & Saturday, June 25-27, 8 p.m., Riverton Rodeo Arena. Get your tickets early so you don’t miss out at rivertonutah.gov/rodeo Tickets are $15 each and must be purchased online. Tickets will sell out early and will not be sold at the gate.

3-Man Arena Sorting Competition

Riverton Town Days kicks off with the annual 3-Man Arena Sorting Competition. Come watch as teams of three cowboys and cowgirls work to sort eight sequentially numbered calves past a center line. Monday, June 22, 7 p.m. at the Riverton Rodeo Arena. This is a free event, no tickets required.

Join a Riverton family tradition and register for the Riverton Town Days races. There is something for everyone; 10K, 5K and for this celebration year, a 1.776-Mile. Register at rivertonutah.gov/races
