GRADES 6-8

Middle School

Our Students Know Us Best.

ā€œ

Small classes provide personalized support from teachers instead of them just talking to the whole class. They know what we are learning in other classes and how to make connections.

Vivienne C.

Teachers remember your growth from previous classes and support you every step of the way with an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses.

Lindsey M.

Chess Club: There is something about the community of playing together that makes this special. You spend time sitting and talking with people you might not otherwise connect with and it is really fun and builds our community.

Maggie S.

Middle School sports are so important. We can play with kids across all grades and be competitive. You show up at the game and together you can raise the level of play and see teamwork result in victory.

THE RIVERSTONE DIFFERENCE

At Riverstone International School, we understand that middle school is a pivotal time for personal growth and self-discovery. Our approach goes beyond academics; we strive to recognize and support each student as a unique individual.

With small class sizes and a dedicated faculty, we build strong relationships with our students, allowing us to understand their strengths, challenges, and aspirations. This personalized attention ensures that every child feels seen, heard, and valued.

Our Middle Years Programme (MYP) emphasizes not only academic excellence but also the development of critical life skills such

as self-awareness, empathy, and resilience. Through advisory programs and a curriculum that connects learning to real-world experiences, we guide students in setting personal goals and developing a vision for their future.

By partnering closely with families, we create a supportive community that fosters confidence and encourages students to reach their full potential. At Riverstone, we are committed to helping each child navigate the complexities of adolescence with compassion and purpose.

Inspiring Instruction and a Thriving Middle School Community.

Our Middle School is more than an academic journey—it’s a transformative experience. We prepare students for the most challenging high school programs through a personalized approach that combines individualized support with the IB Middle Years Program (MYP).

Our teachers are committed to each student’s unique growth, fostering a vibrant community that celebrates individual pursuits while emphasizing collaboration, experiential learning, and global citizenship. Our students build understanding that starts locally and expands to a broader, more interconnected world perspective.

OTTER STORIES

BUILDING LEADERS

Every extracurricular club at Riverstone begins with students’ initiative. We match students with faculty advisors who champion those ideas and help them succeed. The result? Students who know they can lead.

ā€œI first thought of the idea of Debate Club after my summative PR speech in English class. I got an 8 [the highest possible score] on the presentation. Jack, Henry, and Stellan were like, ā€œTopher, you were the only person to get an 8!ā€

Three others said the same thing. I realized we wouldn’t have another graded speech the entire year. I thought to myself, ā€œSo many people in Riverstone would be good lawyers. That is when I knew I needed to create a debate club. Ms.

Arnold, my English teacher, supported me a lot as we were making everything come together for about a month. Once that was done, the club was created. I think the club is very successful so far. Everyone is getting better at speaking. Team Awola won the first week over Team Staley, arguing that ā€˜chess is not a sport’ over ā€˜chess is a sport.’ Now we are getting into more serious topics. I think the club exemplifies ā€˜leadership by example because public speaking is being a leader. Maybe someone will go to law school by starting their love of law in Debate Club.ā€ -

ACADEMIC

EXCELLENCE

Unparalleled Academic Rigor and the Support to Match.

The tools to unlock your child’s potential.

Our Middle School program offers a dynamic academic experience built on the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). Students are challenged to think critically, solve complex problems, and make meaningful connections between what they’re learning and the world around them.

Our commitment to academic rigor is matched by our commitment to support. With small class sizes and highly engaged teachers, we create an environment where students are encouraged to stretch themselves,

OTTER STORIES

THE BEEKEEPING CLUB

Holistic Learning that Makes Us Braver and More Engaged.

At Riverstone, we believe in transforming fears into opportunities. Our Beekeeping Club, advised by Art Teacher Amber Tookey, does just that. Students care for live bee colonies, learning science, math, and entrepreneurship while harvesting and selling honey locally.

ask questions, and dig deeper. Lessons are designed to be both challenging and engaging, blending creativity, inquiry, and realworld application.

While expectations are high, our teachers are right there alongside each student— recognizing strengths, offering guidance, and making sure no one gets lost along the way. It’s a place where students are pushed to reach their full potential, and supported every step of the journey.

Take Celeste, a 7th grader who was once terrified of bees. By joining the club, she’s learned to face her fears, developing confidence and pride in her ability to overcome challenges. From hive management to product design and sales, students discover that stepping out of their comfort zone can be incredibly rewarding.

The club isn’t just about honey—it’s about building courage, collaboration, and real-world skills.

Our Instruction is Focused on the Student.

Units unfold around big, debatable questions. Students are encouraged to explore these questions, think critically, and apply their knowledge to real-life situations. In this way students engage and develop a lifelong love of learning. We work with every student to help them grow into their individual strengths – whether it’s through our video game and 3D printing design technology units, award-winning National History Day research projects, or taking high school language and math courses.

National History Day Competition

At Riverstone, we believe history is more than memorizing dates – it’s about discovering compelling stories and developing critical thinking skills and deep understanding. Our students compete in National History Day after weeks of immersive study. They dive deep into topics of their choice, creating documentaries, websites, exhibits, performances, or research papers. Students learn to be true historians: analyzing

Math & Literacy

We offer a comprehensive and flexible approach to mathematics that meets each student exactly where they are. With seven distinct course offerings and small, targeted classes, students receive individualized attention that allows them to build a robust mathematical foundation. Topics include pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics. Whether a student needs additional support or is ready to tackle high-school level mathematics, our program is designed to nurture mathematical curiosity and confidence. The middle school math program prepares every student to take calculus in high school, some as early as in 10th grade.

Wednesdays Without Walls

Wednesdays at Riverstone’s middle school are anything but ordinary. Our innovative Wednesday programming offers students an extraordinary educational experience that goes far beyond textbook learning. From 8:20 to 12:05, our teachers lead carefully designed experiences that allow students to apply their learning in creative, meaningful ways.

Recent Wednesdays have included ā€œFandango Dayā€ with local artists and musicians to combine music and Spanish studies through dance; a national grant-funded math experience

complex sources, crafting persuasive arguments and presenting their findings with creativity and confidence. Riverstone’s middle school students are regularly chosen to represent Idaho at the national competition in Washington, D.C. The skills they develop will serve them throughout their academic and professional lives.

Our literacy program is designed to empower students as confident communicators and critical thinkers through a dynamic, personalized journey of discovery. Through integrated writing experiences across all subjects, students develop mastery in informational, persuasive, and creative writing. They learn to research deeply, organize their thoughts with precision, and refine their ideas through careful editing. Public speaking and reflective practices are woven into our curriculum, ensuring students not only write with clarity but also speak with conviction.

to explore area, volume, speed and velocity at the ice rink; working together on habitat restoration projects and trail building; or getting belay certifications at the climbing gym. The day ends with engaging elective courses, ensuring a full day of dynamic, student-centered learning.

I NTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING

Middle school is the perfect time to expand horizons and cultivate global understanding. Our commitment to international mindedness isn’t just a program—it’s a way of life. Language learning is at the heart of this journey, with students exploring Mandarin and Spanish, building communication skills that bridge cultures and continents.

The IB Middle Years Program (MYP) framework guides our approach, encouraging students to see themselves as part of a global community. Our diverse student body brings perspectives from multiple countries, creating a rich tapestry of cultural exchange right in our classrooms. Our boarding program, starting in Grade 8, further extends this global perspective, allowing students to live and learn alongside peers from around the world. Students begin practicing for the Idaho Biliteracy Seal in Grade 8.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

We Go Far When We Go

Together.

Discovering confidence, leadership, and responsibility in the great outdoors.

At Riverstone, not all classrooms have walls. Our outdoor education program takes students beyond the traditional school setting, immersing them in the rugged beauty of the wilderness. Whether trekking through the Sawtooths, paddling down remote rivers, or biking across high desert landscapes, students gain a sense of freedom while learning essential life skills.

These adventures go beyond exploration— they teach responsibility. Students carry their own gear, prepare meals, navigate diverse environments, and support one another through challenges. Practicing ā€œLeave No Traceā€ principles instills environmental stewardship, while real-world problem-solving fosters independence and teamwork.

Through each expedition, students build resilience, camaraderie, and a deeper connection to the natural world. Whether skiing through fresh powder, sharing stories around a campfire, or tackling a steep ascent together, every experience strengthens their confidence and ability to lead.

With guidance from experienced teachers and supportive peers, our outdoor program creates lasting memories and lifelong skills—preparing students not just for the next adventure, but for life itself.

Each year, students embark on a series of unforgettable trips:

• Grade 6: A four-day camp-based trip to Yellowstone National Park, a camping and civil rights education trip in Southern Idaho, and ski/snowboard lessons.

• Grade 7: A four-day biking trip along the Weiser River Trail, ski/snowboard lessons, and a mountain biking and camping trip in the Owyhees.

• Grade 8: A six-day river expedition on the Main Salmon River, a three-day winter yurt trip near Idaho City, and a five-day backpacking trek along the Snake River in Hell’s Canyon National Recreation Area.

GRADE 8

SALMON RIVER TRIP

OTTER STORIES

STORIES DISCOVERED AND LIVED TOGETHER.

How the Trail Brings Us Closer Together as a Community.

For Middle School Director Damon Brown, the Outdoor Program is key to getting to know students and building rapport with students.

ā€œOur Outdoor Program goes beyond traditional learning. To truly support student growth, we must connect in ways that transcend the

classroom. When we struggle together, hike together, and share challenging experiences, we break down barriers. Students see us not just as teachers, but as full, compassionate human beings. These shared journeys—whether it’s a 30mile trek or a moment of collective challenge— are the heart of what Riverstone is built on: understanding each other’s stories and growing together.ā€

LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE

Everyone Can be a Great Leader.

Leadership in Riverstone Middle School isn’t just a concept – it’s a lived experience. Students explore what energizes them, build communication skills, and take risks in reaching further than they thought possible. This happens in an environment that honors student agency and authentic engagement.

Some students launch clubs while others study outdoor education leadership and become junior trip leaders. In classes

they tutor elementary students in 3D printing, advocate for social causes and plan service projects through their Grade 8 community projects. Design students plan our annual school-wide adventure race. Whatever their mode or style of leadership, we celebrate student actions that make our community better and stronger.

COMMUNITY AND SERVICE

Community and Service engagement is our way of life. We create an intentionally supportive environment where every student feels known, valued, and empowered to grow. Small class sizes and dedicated teachers allow for personalized attention, ensuring each student has a team committed to their success. Through service learning– from partnering with food banks, supporting refugee centers, working with animal welfare organizations, or collaborating with local nonprofits – we transform education from a solitary journey into a shared adventure of discovery and personal growth. Our students learn that true community means lifting each other up, embracing diverse perspectives, and understanding that everyone has something meaningful to contribute.

OTTER STORIES

Personalizing Education Experiences and Building Opportunities for All Students.

When we say we know and support every student, we mean it. Riverstone’s student support services make our rigorous curriculum accessible to a wide range of learning differences, and extend it to meet the needs of our most gifted students.

Twice a year, the middle school leadership team meets with every family in the middle school. These meetings result in personalized Learning Maps for each student’s unique journey.

ā€œThis year we built a plan with one family to accommodate their student’s Junior Olympiclevel sports schedule with our demanding academic program. Another student needed a book list in their areas of interest to meet their goal of reading more for pleasure. Another student dreamed of attending a competitive law school someday and knew they needed a competitive college admission as well. We helped them begin thinking through their trajectory through high school. Another student wanted more opportunities to perform; we helped them identify school activities and a local drama group to give them the experiences they were looking for.ā€ - Middle School Director Damon Brown
