An Introduction and Welcome from Stacey Walker, High School Director

Dear Riverstone Community, You are invited to learn more about our graduating class in this installment of Meet the Seniors! In these pages, you will hear from our incredible seniors firsthand about their experiences at Riverstone and their journeys to come. One of our seniors, Fiona V.D.G. has been at Riverstone since the beginning of her academic journey. We also have six graduating boarding students: Isabella G., Matteo M., Alex T., Alex X., Tuan Anh V., and Thomas W. No matter when their Riverstone journey began, we are honored to be a part of it. As a senior class, they are quirky, kind, and ambitious. They consistently stand up for each other, they have developed strong leadership in High School, and I am excited to see where they all choose to go in the future. Aidan C. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 11 What is the title of your Extended Essay? The Extent to Which Fox News and CNN Employed Rhetoric in their Coverage of the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Project Good with One Stone, where I mentored younger students one-on-one in summer camps and developed a service project to help bridge the generational divide between teenagers and senior citizens. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? I suppose my biggest challenge has been managing my time in the Diploma Program. In Junior Year, I spent almost all my time working on homework/studying, and it caused me to feel burned out and not engage in many social/personal activities. This year, I'm doing my best to balance my time so I can be successful academically while still enjoying my last year at Riverstone! What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? I have a lot of fond memories, but a few of my recent favorites are encountering a family of grizzly bears on the Rogue River trail and playing intense games of Ninja in the Eagle Cap Wilderness as the sun went down. I also treasure the 6th grade Yellowstone trip and the 7th grade bike trip. Some memories from elementary school are Ms. Stewart reading to my class in our Horsethief cabin as rain poured down outside, playing games of freeze infection at recess in 4th grade, and Mrs. Morgan reading me a tiger-themed birthday book on the last day of school in 1st grade. (I know that's a lot, but there are just so many to choose from!) What the ways in which you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey? Riverstone has enhanced my creativity and critical thinking skills through a variety of out-of-the-box projects/activities. I've also found/developed my identity during my time here. Riverstone has fostered passions in me for everything from animals and insects in 1st grade to creative writing and debate in 6th-7th grade.

What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? 1. Appreciate -- and take advantage of -- the supportive community around you. As a side note, don't compare yourself to your peers -- instead, learn and grow from them. 2. Be an active part of the community. Riverstone is one of the few places where you can make an impact on the greater community, so take risks, join clubs, and if you think something is missing, take action to fix it. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Uplifting, Vibrant, Unforgettable

Aleksandra T. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 4 What is the title of your Extended Essay? I don`t have a title yet but I`m exploring the effect of the mass migration from Syria to Turkey caused by the Syrian civil war (specifically between 2011 and 2022) on Turkey’s relations with the EU over the same period of time What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Leading Girl Up and Model United Nations What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Handling the IB workload and other activities. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? The 11th-grade winter trip and living at the dorm with my friends How you are prepared for the next part of your journey? I'm a better time manager, researcher, and writer. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Try to have your EE 99% done by the end of your junior year and build good relationships with your teachers; they will support you every step of the way! What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Supportive. Challenging. Enriching.

Aseese S. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 4 What is the title of your Extended Essay? The Instability of South Sudan What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Safety Seminar for Riverstone Staff and working with the WCA. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? I believe that my personal challenge at Riverstone was finding the group of people that I connect with. I came to Riverstone in 2020 during COVID where our entire class was split into 2 cohorts. My classes were with only 2 other people, and while they were kindhearted and welcoming, we just did not click on a deeper level, meaning we did not have similar hobbies, interests, etc. Fortunately, on Wednesdays, our whole grade was at school where I was able to meet and talk to the rest of the students in my class. It was on one of these Wednesdays that I met 2 of my best friends: Leah and Maud. We instantly clicked over our love for music, sports, and 2000s movies, and throughout the rest of the year, we grew closer and inseparable. While we thought our group was complete, Maria joined our friend group; since then, you will never see one of us without the other 3. We play sports together, sing together, laugh and cry together, and have joint joy for binging the Kardashians. I am forever grateful to Riverstone for blessing me with my 3 best friends. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? 1. playing ultimate frisbee in Grand Gulch with Mr. Scripps, and 2. car ride concerts while driving to away games for basketball and volleyball. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? 1. Happiness does not equate to academic achievement, so do not confuse the two. 2. Help one another and lean on each other for support; don't go at the IB alone. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Tight-knit. Memorable. Unique. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I feel prepared for the next part of my journey because of the DP courses and DP teachers. Each course and teacher has taught me essential life skills that I will hold on to for my college journey and my future career path. Francesca and DP Core have taught me the importance of time management and organization. Throughout the entire EE process, it is essential to utilize these 2 skills in order to be successful. Managing your time with other schools, extracurriculars, and a social life can be difficult while writing a research paper on your own.

I found it helpful to designate times for each activity, organizing notes and timelines, attending CORE class, and asking for help from Francesca and other teachers to gain confidence and collaboration skills.While I was initially intimidated by the backpacking trips, Emily E and Derek were great supporters and gave me the confidence to succeed in the outdoors. Collaboration with classmates in the wilderness, whether in tent, cooking, or hiking groups is essential for a great trip. We worked well together to complete tasks and have a great time.

Xuda (Charles) C. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 3 What is the title of your Extended Essay? How Deception Becomes the Nash Equilibrium of the Human Coexistence Mode in a Non-zero-sum Game What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? I participated in a five-day and four-night youth business competition during my last summer vacation. I met many friends of the same age who have different ideas and abilities. During the competition, I learned many practical skills that can be used in future work and life. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? In the first year, my English proficiency was very poor and I rarely communicated with people. I now constantly force myself to read and communicate in English to improve my English proficiency. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Our Grade 11 college trip where we spent all of our time eating and living together within a few days, walking between different universities, and looking forward to our future university life. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. The robotics club taught me how to divide work and cooperate as a team, and how to manage a planned timeline step-by-step to complete our robots. This really helped me to improve my time management skills. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? 1. Take your study time at school seriously 2. Take life outside of school seriously. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Exciting. Joyful. Growth.

CheukHim (Alex) X. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 3 What is the title of your Extended Essay? How does the structure of the aperture of an iris diaphragm affect the diffraction spike and the overall shape? What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Working with the Boise Bike Project. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? How to live more independently. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? My favorite Riverstone memory was the first outdoor trip I went on, which was the Rogue River backpacking trip in Grade 10. It was my first time on a backpacking trip and everything was new to me. I loved the view and that I had an opportunity to go on an outdoor trip with friends. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I have better time management skills. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? 1. Enjoy your outdoor trips, and 2. Make sure you have good time management! What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Growth. Learning. Exploration.

Cloe C. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 3 What is the title of your Extended Essay? To what extent did Coco Chanel shift the fashion industry while also emancipating women through her designs? What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? I would say living at the dorm was a pretty big challenge. Constantly being surrounded by so many other students 24/7 was difficult. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? The Rogue River trip was one of my favorite experiences because I was able to build closer relationships with my group and I was able to go outside of my comfort zone and do something I wouldn’t normally think to do on my own. The views were also beautiful. I also really loved some experiences I had at the dorm and the connections I made there. Hanging out on the weekends with my friends from the dorm was definitely a highlight of my Riverstone experience. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I am prepared for the workload of college and I have learned how to use my time wisely as well as advocate for what I want and what will make my life better. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Don’t procrastinate. Make a plan and have a planner so you can prepare. Also, talk to your teachers if you have questions. They are here to help and a lot of the time other students may have the same questions. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Hectic, Fun, Memorable. 8

The effect of the gauge of wire used in the stator of an automotive alternator on the current produced. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Playing competitive overwatch or restoring a 1973 Plymouth Scamp. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Adjusting to the DP which has a very high workload and dealing with procrastination. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Rogue River backpacking trip, Playing ice hockey on a frozen lake on a Fieldwork Wednesday. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I feel like I can manage a really high workload and I can collaborate with others well. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Don't play e-sports and don't procrastinate but don't overwork yourself. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Hard, Rewarding, Connected.

Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I am better at managing time. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Do your work on time and make good connections with the teachers. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Epic, Sick, and Swagger

What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Volunteering at Paradise Point What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? HL Chemistry, snowshoeing trip, Covid What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? All of World Religions with Udesen, and the college trips Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I'm absolutely a better time manager, which is something that I've struggled with for years. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? DO NOT procrastinate and choose a really good EE topic; it’ll make it so much better What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Hard but rewarding

Fiona V. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 13 What is the title of your Extended Essay? Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Subversions, Suppression, and Strength of the Titular Slayer What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Over the summers before junior and senior year, I worked with the Cabin, a program for teaching kids writing. Although I worked there last summer, I volunteered the previous summer and felt like I was able to not only help others but also improve my own explanation and teaching skills. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Throughout my time at Riverstone, building and maintaining strong connections has been difficult. This is especially because I have been here for a long time (the longest in my class, I believe), and hence many of the people I have grown close to have left. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Perhaps my favorite memories related to Riverstone have related to our various outdoor trips, given that they have always made me feel more connected to my classmates and allowed us to take a step back from everyday, mundane stressors. For example, the Taiwan trip in the spring break of junior year allowed me to not only learn more about other cultures, but also grow closer to my classmates and learn how to take care of myself more effectively in unknown environments (a valuable lesson for college). Similarly, both the college trip and Horsethief trip in junior year also allowed me to bond with my classmates, have deep, often existential conversations, and learn to be more comfortable in my own skin and at Riverstone. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. Although I have always been good at getting work done, the strenuous requirements of the IB education at Riverstone has taught me the importance of being willing to make mistakes and the need to sometimes prioritize the present over the future, no matter how important it is.

What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Although schoolwork is undoubtedly important, always make sure to take a break to appreciate the community around you and your own growth. Also, make sure to take classes because you enjoy them, not because they are easy; the work will almost always be worth it. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Empowering, Fun, and Meaningful

Giovani D. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 5 What is the title of your Extended Essay? What are Hinduism's eschatological views on the ultimate destiny of humanity and the cosmos? What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Volunteering for a Spanish Career Fair for the Boise School District Dual Language Program. It was great to see how much support the community is offering to the future generation. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? For me it was trying hard on subjects that I never found interesting. I sometimes struggled to find the meaning in those subjects. Over time, thanks to the teachers, curriculum, and learning environment, these class subjects have been more fun and interesting to learn about. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? One of my favorite highlights is meeting a longterm friend on the first-ever day of school. I am still very good friends with him and our bond has grown even more throughout the years. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. Backpacking taught me a lot about mental and physical strength. It taught me how I can achieve by having a strong positive attitude. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Manage time well and work hard to achieve your goals. Grant P. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 4 What is the title of your extended essay? How can we classify Fine Art Photography's perception and validity as an art form? What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Making a video advertisement for McCu’s Sports ( a local Boise business) downtown. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Balancing what I classes I enjoy and the time I spend in them versus the ones I dislike (chemistry). Socially it has been hard to learn how to be surrounded by the same people every day. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? The College trip in 11th grade. The after school talks about life, art, and philosophy with Mr. Udesen. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I've learned to show up even when I don't feel capable or like I want to. From stressful weeks with several tests and or presentations to 7-mile hikes with a heavy pack, I've learned how to make the best of what I have, looking for the positive in rough or challenging situations. The attitude and outlook by which I showed up every day directly influenced my ability to perform as a student and critical thinker. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Stay on top of your EE deadlines and get it done as soon as possible before senior year. Do what you are passionate about, what excites you, what brings your life meaning. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Expansive, Challenging, Fulfilling. 14

Effect of brewing temperature on chlorogenic acid amount in coffee What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Snowboarding with my friends and teaching them how to snowboard. This is the first time I can snowboard right after school instead of on breaks. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Communicating with the school administration when my parents are across the ocean. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Bonding with the class after prom was very fun. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I think I became more independent and I got a better hold of how to communicate with my teachers. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Communicate with your teachers. Listening and doing the things you have to do in class will save you a lot of time. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Jason K. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 3 What is the title of your extended essay? Flow State in the Game of Basketball. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Club Basketball. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Learning time management and overcoming adversity in sports. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Playing Basketball for Riverstone. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I have learned how to understand my mental health and develop a better relationship within myself to help me work towards my goals. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? To dream big, work consistently, and trust God with their goals, as well as to take care of and understand their mental health. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Challenging, Lessons, Grateful

Leah B. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 4 What is the title of your Extended Essay? Nadia Murad and the first conviction of genocide against ISIS What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? My most meaningful and important CAS experience was a Global Health Initiative service trip I went on in the Dominican Republic this past summer. My initial reason for going on this trip was to gain experience and further pursue my interest in the medical field as a career choice. However, the service and experiences I ended up having had a greater impact on me than I could have ever predicted. The majority of the service included shadowing doctors in clinics located mainly in illegal Haitian settlements. The clinical work was split up into multiple stations including checking in patients, vitals, patient history, consultations, and pharmacy. Although the medical portion of the service was engaging and very interesting, I was mostly impacted by the interactions I had the people. From playing soccer with the villagers, kids taking our hands and showing us around the village, and little girls spending hours braiding and playing with our hair, I realized that as much of a difference the service my group was doing was changing their lives, they might have changed mine a little more. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? One of the greatest challenges I encountered during my time at Riverstone was when I first started at the beginning of freshman year during COVID. I had never started at a new school and it was very difficult integrating into Riverstone academically and socially. As we were divided into two cohorts to reduce exposure to more students but to also still be able to attend school in person, I was the only new kid in my cohort, making it difficult to find other people who related to these new experiences. By the then end of the year, I began interacting more with my peers and eventually found my friends who I could not imagine not being in my life. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? One of the highlights of my journey at Riverstone is the trip to Rogue River during my sophomore year. I have many memories from the trip including running into a mother bear and her three cubs on the trail, swimming in the river and tanning in the field with my friends, and sitting around the campfire eating s'mores and laughing with my trip leaders. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I feel prepared for the next part of my journey because Riverstone has taught me to be persistent. No matter the workload given or how rigorous it may be, a challenge can almost always be completed if I keep working at it. This includes other skills such as time management and organization. 17

What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? The first piece of advice I would give to other Riverstone students is to use your teachers as a resource. I can rely on almost all of my teachers to help me with an assignment when needed. This includes building relationships with your teachers. By spending time talking to them, students can find similarities between what they want to achieve in life and what their teachers have experienced. My second piece of advice would be to buy a backpacking pack at the beginning of freshman year. There are enough trips that make it worth having your own pack and it makes the trips easier when you are familiar with your bag. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Maria G. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 3 What is the title of your Extended Essay? To what extent could plants lower the rising ocean acidification levels? What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? President of SAGA (Sexuality And Gender Alliance) club here at Riverstone. It has been super important for me to be able to lead this club. I come from a very different school where diversity was not celebrated and being able to empower the students at Riverstone to be proud of who they are and create a safe place for everyone has been an amazing opportunity that I would not have gotten anywhere else. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? During the 11th-grade winter trip, we stopped at the top of a hill to bake bread dough that we had brought in a Dutch oven. While it was baking, Mr. Lofgren read us a story about a boy who had gone backpacking and almost froze to death. Where we were it was extremely cold and windy and Bailey and I made a hole in the snow and got inside of it to try to protect ourselves from the wind. It was very hard to stay positive and I thought I was going to die. It is one of the best memories that I have of my class now. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? During the 10th grade Rogue River trip, a momma bear with 4 cubs crossed the trail that we were hiking and climbed a tree that was 10 feet away from us. We had to come up with a plan on how to pass them without risking our safety. It was my first backpacking trip ever and it was absolutely amazing that on the first half an hour into the trip, I was able to experience this incredible thing. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. Riverstone has taught me how to manage my time. I play volleyball, basketball, and frisbee. I also am part of the Green Team, Girl Up, yearbook, and president of SAGA. It would not have been possible to do all of that without knowing how to manage my time. 18

What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? (1) Enjoy every single moment of high school because it won't last forever and time goes by really fast. (2) Push yourself to do things that you would normally not do because it is incredible how much you grow from them. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Amazing, exciting, everything I had ever wished for.

Matteo M. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 1 What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Learning the language. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Cooking at the dorm and going to the river with friends. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. My English has improved. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Have fun! What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? A Wonderful Adventure

Maud S. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 5 What is the title of your Extended Essay? The affect of academic performance on social skills within the student. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Organizing the Riverstone volleyball camp as my CAS project. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Changing from living in the Netherlands to being at Riverstone. Definitely with the language, being in a new grade, changing culture, and having to communicate in a language that I did not know how to speak. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? All of the outdoor trips! Definitely going to Grand Gulch with Derek and Ms. B and having so much fun on that trip climbing the rocks. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I feel like I have learned that it is fun to do things out of our comfort zone. This is how you learn to do new things, which usually turn out well. I also think that if you work hard you will see the result of your hard work. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? The first piece of advice is to be involved in your Riverstone community. It doesn't matter if it is Riverstone sports, volunteering, or having a good bond with your teachers. Being involved in the Riverstone community and knowing that the people around you support you makes your journey a lot better. I would also give the advice to definitely play a Riverstone sport or overall a sport outside of Riverstone because it will help your mental and academic state too. It is very helpful to have that time between school to relax your mind by being active and having fun playing a sport. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Exiting, Meaningful, Challenging.

What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Working with the Treasure Valley Youth Magazine. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Taking the IB and challenging classes. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Exploring the Accuracy of Aurora Borealis Prediction Models What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? The most meaningful CAS experience I have had is volunteering at the Boise Discovery Center. I consider it to be the most meaningful because I have been able to give back to the community after many years of enjoying the center. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Challenges that I faced during my time at Riverstone was striving to meet high expectations for grades and performance, dealing with stress and anxiety, time management, and navigating the complexity of the IB curriculum and assessments. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? One favorite memory of my journey at Riverstone was playing games with my friends when we could not meet up during COVID. Even though we could not meet up, we were able to create stronger connections, making this memory one of my favorite. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I understand the importance of balancing out my life between workload, exercise, and socializing.
