Elementary School

Our Parents Know Us Best.

My son has been at Riverstone for seven years…and I can unequivocally say that he is thriving in this vibrant school community.
Nothing short of amazing! Riverstone is everything and so much more than I’d hoped for. Everyone is kind, there’s an amazing focus on social emotional learning, which gives kids the capacity to learn academics too. The community of students, staff, and parents is strong.
The best school in Boise. Outstanding teachers from Preschool to high school. Our kids have both excelled there.
THE RIVERSTONE DIFFERENCE
Growing Confident, Curious Learners Through the IB PYP.
Small classes and caring teachers and staff make all the difference.
At Riverstone International School, our Elementary program combines small class sizes with the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) to nurture confident, curious, and compassionate learners. Students are deeply known by their teachers, allowing for meaningful relationships and personalized support that fosters academic and emotional growth.
The PYP encourages inquiry, connection-making, and action through transdisciplinary learning. IB-trained classroom and specialist teachers in library, art, music, Spanish, Mandarin, and PE guide students in exploring real-world concepts and building critical thinking skills.
Grounded in our Five Pillars—Academic Excellence, Community and Service, Leadership, International Understanding, and Outdoor Education—students develop resilience, empathy, and global awareness.

OTTER STORIES NATALIE CARL
As an educator who values curiosity and lifelong learning, I see Riverstone International School as a place where students are truly prepared for life, not just school. Guided by the International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy, Riverstone encourages students to explore ideas, ask questions, and think critically.
Literacy is a central focus, not just in English, but across every subject. Students learn to analyze historical texts, write persuasively in science, and communicate clearly in math. This cross-disciplinary approach helps them build strong thinking and problem-solving skills.
What sets Riverstone apart is how it blends academic challenge with personal support. Students are seen, heard, and encouraged to grow. Through modern teaching tools, interactive projects, and meaningful discussions, they don’t just learn to read and write; they learn to love it.
At Riverstone, students gain the skills and confidence to thrive well beyond the classroom.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Academic Excellence Through Inquiry and Skill-Building
A personalized, well-rounded IB PYP foundation for lifelong learning.
Academic excellence at Riverstone International School is built on the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), emphasizing inquiry, skill development, and strong foundations in core subjects. Students develop essential Approaches to Learning (ATL), including thinking, communication, self-management, research, and social skills.
Small class sizes allow for personalized instruction in literacy and math, with leveled reading groups, writing workshops, and
hands-on math lessons that build deep understanding. Students also participate in National History Day (NHD) and grade-level Expos to research, present, and apply their learning.
In addition to core academics, students receive specialist instruction in library, art, music, PE, and languages—Spanish from Preschool and Mandarin beginning in Grade 2—supporting a well-rounded and globally focused education.

MAYA BYRD & GABI FORTINO
At Riverstone, our flexible and aligned elementary schedule makes it easy for students to access the right level of challenge, right when they’re ready for it. For Odie and Ethan, two first-grade students excelling in math, this has meant the opportunity to join the second-grade math class.
This seamless transition supports their academic growth and gives them the confidence to stretch themselves. They enjoy the challenge of more

advanced content and the chance to collaborate with older peers. On days when the second grade is away, like during a field trip, they return to our class and proudly serve as helpers and role models, sharing their knowledge with enthusiasm.
Riverstone’s thoughtful approach allows each student to thrive at their own pace while fostering leadership and community. It’s just one example of how we meet learners where they are and help them grow.
Building Global Understanding Through Language and Culture
Empowering students with language skills and cultural awareness for a connected world.
At Riverstone, international understanding begins with language, offering Spanish starting in Preschool and Mandarin from Grade 2. These language programs not only develop communication skills but also promote empathy, cultural appreciation, and global awareness.
Students engage in cross-grade collaborations, where older students mentor younger ones, sharing the history, traditions, and values of OTTER STORIES

different cultures. These interactions help students build a deeper understanding of the world and appreciate its diversity. By integrating language learning with cultural exploration, Riverstone nurtures an openminded, globally aware mindset, preparing students to connect meaningfully with others and embrace the richness of different cultures.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Connecting with Nature: Outdoor Education
Building confidence, teamwork, and environmental stewardship through outdoor adventures.
At Riverstone, Outdoor Education is a key part of the Elementary School experience, offering students in Presxhool through 5 the chance to connect with nature while developing important life skills. These outdoor experiences foster teamwork, resilience, and environmental stewardship. Students participate in a variety of trips throughout the year that challenge them
physically and emotionally, helping to build confidence and a sense of responsibility. By engaging with the natural world, students gain a deeper understanding of their surroundings and the importance of working together, all while aligning with Riverstone’s commitment to inspiring curiosity and personal growth.

OTTER STORIES
Carissa Schlachter first came to Riverstone as a student teacher, and from day one, she knew it was the place for her. “There is nothing else like this. We know our students so well and can work with them one-on-one, more than we ever could at another school. I made it my mission to teach here,” she says. One of the biggest draws for Carissa was the Outdoor Program. “We focus on academics, but we also take what we’ve learned and apply it outdoors. You have to experience the world to truly understand it, and camping trips help us see the biggest changes in students. That’s when they see us outside the classroom—not just as teachers, but as people. We’re more relaxed, playing games, and making sure they feel safe. Afterward, students come to us with classroom
or playground issues because they know we’re their person who can help. These connections make us better teachers.”
This philosophy came to life during the Grade 5 students’ week-long camping trip to Moab, Utah. The adventure began with a hike through Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, where students challenged themselves on difficult trails, showing perseverance and supporting each other. Their teamwork continued as they rafted the Colorado River, facing obstacles together. One student summed up the experience perfectly: “All we had was a backpack and a dream, and we did it!” This trip was more than just an adventure; it was a powerful experience in personal growth, teamwork, and lasting memories—an experience that strengthened the bonds between students and teachers alike.

COMMUNITY AND SERVICE
Growing Leaders Through Service
Fostering empathy and leadership through service projects.
At Riverstone International School, Community and Service are integral to our Elementary School experience, fostering empathy, responsibility, and global awareness from an early age. Through age-appropriate service projects, students engage with both local and global communities, developing a sense of purpose and understanding of their role in the world. These experiences are woven into the curriculum, encouraging students to apply their learning in meaningful ways. By participating in collaborative activities, students build connections, enhance their communication skills, and learn the value
of contributing to something greater than themselves. This foundation prepares them to become compassionate leaders who are committed to making a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE
Developing Leaders in Every Grade
Learning to be leaders through actions, empathy, and integrity.
At Riverstone, leadership begins in the earliest grades. We believe every student can lead— through actions, empathy, and integrity. In the Elementary School, students learn to lead by example in the classroom, on the playground, and within the community. They take on roles that promote responsibility and collaboration, from helping younger peers to contributing to classroom decision-making. Through experiences like buddy programs, group projects, and outdoor adventures, students practice active listening, problem-solving, and teamwork. These everyday opportunities help them grow into confident individuals who understand that leadership isn’t about being in charge—it’s about making thoughtful choices, supporting others, and setting a positive example. Our students are empowered to lead with kindness, courage, and respect.
OTTER STORIES
BUDDY PROGRAM
All of our Elementary School students participate in Riverstone’s Buddy Program, where older and younger students are thoughtfully paired to foster connection, mentorship, and leadership. These relationships are built through regular activities like reading together, collaborating on projects, and visiting each other’s classrooms.
For our youngest learners, their buddy offers a sense of comfort and belonging— someone who helps them feel safe and supported as they explore new experiences. For older students, the program provides a meaningful opportunity to develop empathy, responsibility, and leadership by example.
As Grade 4 student Bea shares, “I don’t want to treat my buddies like I’m not interested in them. I have to keep an eye on them. I want to be a good example and to make my friends feel good about themselves and school.”
