Dear Neighbours Autumn is a busy and exciting time in the River District, and this year is no exception! School is back, the days are getting shorter, and before we know it, Halloween will be here. There’s plenty happening around the neighbourhood, and we are excited to share it with you in Issue 22 of River District Living. As River District continues to grow, we welcome BMO and Almond Nail Bar to Town Centre, and get to know Salmon Stone Childcare Centre, which opened its doors in the community last November. We highlight a talented River District neighbour who has taken up crochet, creating some wonderfully whimsical pieces and sharing a special call to action for neighbours. Artist Spotlight: Anna Lazar

ARTIST BIO I'm a self-taught artist and a creative at heart. I think I've always searched for and found inspiration in the places around me. In doing so, I've discovered that every place has its own little charm. Finding the little things that give each place its character is like a treasure hunt. For me, painting is a way of capturing the identity of the place for the brief moment that I experience it, then sharing it with others to also enjoy it too. Since making Vancouver home, I've found myself especially drawn to the beauty and character of my surroundings like the changing seasons, the gardens, the architecture, the river, and those little corners of the neighbourhood that hide in plain sight. A lot of what I paint begins that way, something catches my eye, and I think, "this is so beautiful, I need to paint that." I work primarily in acrylics, and I'm interested in capturing the magical feeling of a place. My subjects can range from landscapes and neighbourhood scenes to gardens, animals, food and whatever else speaks to me. River District is a meaningful source of inspiration because there is so much life happening here. Painting things from my surroundings around my everyday routines has brought me so much joy. Just like adding seasoning to dishes, adding colour to the mundane makes life so much more interesting and above all, exciting!

FEATURE ARTWORK This painting was inspired by the community garden planters here in the River District. I've always loved them, they're small pockets of personality scattered throughout the neighbourhood. They are almost like the signatures of the residents that live here. They tend to them with a lot of care and nurture and over time they become part of the landscape we all share. Gardening feels very similar to painting to me. You start with a desire to create, sprinkle in some colour, and eventually it takes on a living spirit.

After painting the planter, I gave it to the neighbours who planted them to keep a memory of what makes this place our special home. It was like a full circle moment for me, they created something beautiful for the community, I was able to preserve that moment through my own form of creation.

I chose this particular perspective because it captures so many things associated with River District in one small scene like the surrounding nature, and the feeling of being close to the river. The river itself isn't really visible in the painting, which I actually like. It's just beyond the garden, almost like an unseen presence in the background. You know it's there. This is what it's like living here, we all sense its magnificent presence, it is the identity of the neighbourhood, whether it appears directly in the view or not.

Love for River District

I followed my brother and my friend Leeann to move into the River District in 2008. Even after more than 15 years, I walk the river path every day, and every day there is something new to see. I'm always on the lookout for my favourite neighbours: the beavers and the barn owls. Our dog loves Everett Crowley, the largest dog friendly park in the city. I love that we have community spots like the party kiosk at Riverfront Park, where we can get together with friends and neighbours for parties—and Bark-B-Ques!

One of the things I love most about River District is that inspiration is everywhere and it's all familiar. It's fun painting familiar places and highlighting the ordinary. When I paint it, it becomes a popular star, and people who pass by it pay more attention to it. I love the idea that someone might recognize a spot they pass all the time and see it a little differently. Also, sometimes I leave pieces for people to discover but they never stay in place for too long! Maybe someone takes them home to protect them from the elements, or maybe it resonates with them. I love the mystery of not knowing. This is where I form the connection with my neighbours. First it's with the land, then the people around me and this is how I get to ground myself to the environment. I truly appreciate our community and want to give back through my art.

River District is so peaceful! After years of renting around Vancouver, my partner and I moved into our first home in the River District. There is an abundance of calm nature, yet we’re still a close drive to city areas. We go for more walks to run errands, whether to Champlain or Metrotown, and enjoy the view of the Fraser River. We also run into folks we know that now live here too. These simple pleasures make this neighbourhood feel like home.

When you spend time here, it’s easy to understand its appeal. I love walking along the finally reopened river walk and watching the unleashed dogs attack the pedestrians and bikers fighting over the paved part of the walkway, and then navigating the treacherous Sawmill Crescent crosswalks to finally arrive at Boketto for some friendly hospitality and a mango smoothie with cream foam (75% sugar).

River District has been the perfect place for Winnie to flourish. The incredible community, beautiful waterfront, and welcoming neighbours have made it feel like home for both of us.

Where did Halloween come from? Our modern-day celebration of trick or treating and jack-o-lanterns originated thousands of years ago with the Celtic Pagans who observed Samhain, which marked their New Year festival, the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. From Oct. 31 to Nov. 1, they believed the veil between the living and the dead thinned, and magical creatures such as fairies and goblins, as well as spirits could cause a little mischief and mayhem. You would wear costumes to trick these creatures into thinking you were one of them so they’d leave you alone. This festive tradition was brought over to America by Irish immigrants in the late 19th century. In the Christian calendar, All Hallow’s Eve was celebrated on Nov. 1 to honour saints. Halloween is most well-known today as a secular holiday for everyone to enjoy! While Halloween is one of the best holidays we have (dress up and ask for candy!), considering the seasonal significance of this holiday, it’s also a great time to journal and if you work with tarot or oracle decks, pull some cards! Here are 3 tarot spread ideas for you to try this Halloween season. No cards? No worries! Light a candle, get a pen, and paper. These can serve as journaling prompts too. 14

Crafting on the River WORDS, IMAGES & DESIGNS BY KEVIN YEE

Crafting content creator was never a part of my plan, especially after a lifetime in show business that spanned record deals, dancing on Broadway stages, and writing for award winning TV shows. But the world shifts fast nowadays, as what we once knew to be a sure thing becomes as reliable as the rotting wooden planks on the Kerr Street pier. Leaving Hollywood and moving back to Vancouver at what should have been the height of my show business career was a tough decision, but there were union strikes, an industry collapse, and my own sudden lack of interest in a long and thankless career.

“We have so little control over so many things, but we could have control over our own whimsy. Creating art is taking back ownership of your life.” Dollarama was the change of perspective I needed. While perusing the craft aisle, I stumbled upon a crochet kit that would inevitably bring me a new type of inspiration. It was my failed attempt at that crochet kit and the hilarity of trying something new in your middle age that suddenly brought me a community that I felt connected to. And now, two years later, my growing audience watches me improve at crochet as I graduate from wonky scarves to neon bodysuits. I’ve also tried a slew of other crafts including candle making, pottery, glass sculpting, and dollar store craft kits that have seen me growing my own crystal dinosaur to bedazzling a unicorn painting. I’ve even attempted sewing, bringing my mother’s old Pfaff machine from the 1970s to be repaired by one of the last remaining sewing machine experts in the Lower Mainland. While it’s easy to dismiss crafting as something for children, the benefits to one’s mental health and physical dexterity cannot be understated. I was a highly effective and promising youth, and that pressure drove me to amazing heights with a work ethic that was second to none. Unfortunately it also caused a lot of internal turmoil which led to my current moniker: the internet’s depressed gay uncle. But now as my pile of crafting masterpieces grows, I’ve finally learned that perfection isn’t the goal. Perfection is boring. It’s about igniting my middle aged adult whimsy. So while it is often seen as such, crafting is not just child’s play.

In a world that can sometimes feel monotone and monotonous, why not create a little colour? In a time of fast fashion mass produced in shades of beige, why not peruse the yarn and fabric section of your local store and bring to life a colourful outfit of your own envisioning? And if it seems unaffordable, why not make budgeting a part of the fun? Pricing materials and couponing are all things I consider a part of my crafting. We have so little control over so many things, but we could have control over our own whimsy. Creating art is taking back ownership of your life. I can’t be the only person feeling a little low nowadays. But if you let yourself be inspired you may be able to envision something different, and craft a whole new life for yourself.

The Boardwalk Community Trick or Treat PRESENTED BY THE BOARDWALK NEIGHBOUR COMMUNITY

Halloween Night,

Costumed kids and kids at heart are invited to come out to East Kent Ave North at Jellicoe for the 7th Annual The Boardwalk Community Trick or Treat!

SATURday, October 31 5:00 pM - 7:00 pm

This community-led initiative brings neighbours together to provide a fun, safe, and inclusive trick-ortreating experience for local kids. All stations are at street level and are accessible.

East Kent Ave North, at Jellicoe

Anchored around large scale Halloween scenes, you'll find at least 5 candy stations for kids, 1 inclusive noncandy station, and 1 for dogs. Come have some treats and get fun photos of your kids or fur kids. This year's theme is Monster Mash! We welcome all ages to come dressed as your favourite monster for a group photo at 5:30 pm! Want to get in on the fun? The easiest option is to donate individually packaged candy. With Halloween on a Saturday this year, we expect over 700 kids - that means 12,000+ pieces of candy! Last year, despite heavy rain, we had 600 kids and over 10,500 pieces of candy! Other ways to get involved: If you're creative, volunteer to help create the Halloween art or help us build the displays. If you want to set up your own station, bring a table and candy! If you like logistics, folks are needed to help control traffic. Have an interactive idea like a Monster Mash Dance Off - or you want to debut your alter-ego as a Mystical Magician - we love bringing more family fun to the event! In November 2025, Salmon Stone Childcare, a City of Vancouver (COV) purpose-built, licensed childcare centre operated by South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH), opened its doors in the River District community, creating 49 childcare spaces for children from birth to five years of age.

“Like the salmon, children embark on a journey of learning and discovery, guided by the support of their families, educators, and community. The stone symbolizes strength, stability, and a solid foundation for lifelong learning.”

The centre's name was gifted by South Vancouver Neighbourhood House Indigenous Council Member Geraldine Clevette, who recognized the significance of the location and the centre's purpose in supporting children and families. The name Salmon Stone reflects connection, resilience, and growth while honouring the natural and cultural heritage of the area. Like the salmon, children embark on a journey of learning and discovery, guided by the support of their families, educators, and community. The stone symbolizes strength, stability, and a solid foundation for lifelong learning. Today, Salmon Stone Childcare is a welcoming and inclusive space where children can learn, play, and thrive. Operated by South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH) on behalf of the City of Vancouver, the centre provides high-quality, affordable, and accessible early learning opportunities for children and families in the River District community.

There's a new face in River District, and it's changing what a trip to the nail salon can feel like. Almond Nail Bar River District quietly opened its doors in June, and the response from the neighbourhood was immediate - regulars started forming before the space had even fully settled in, a clear sign that River District had been waiting for a salon like this. Almond Nail Bar is a Canadian franchise born in Manitoba and now expanding into communities across the country, but the River District location was built with this neighbourhood specifically in mind - a quiet, convenient, community-minded pocket of the city that, until now, didn't have a nail salon to call its own. What sets Almond Nail Bar apart starts with what you won't find in the space: acrylics. The salon doesn't work with acrylic products at all, which means no overpowering chemical smell greeting you at the door. That choice ties directly into the brand's larger philosophy - every product used is non-toxic and odourless, so clients never have to wonder what they're breathing in. At Victoria Drive Denture Clinic, the belief is simple: every denture is unique, and every patient deserves care tailored to their individual needs. Located at 5477 Victoria Drive, the clinic is led by Denturist Cecilia Guglielmetti, who brings more than 20 years of combined technical and clinical experience in denture making. Cecilia began her career as a dental technician, working for 12 years in the denture departments of two of Vancouver’s largest dental laboratories. While she enjoyed the creativity and technical side of making dentures, she wanted to know the people she was making them for. That desire for a more personal approach led her to pursue her denturist training at Vancouver Community College.

After graduating, Cecilia joined Victoria Drive Denture Clinic and continued her education to stay current with new technologies and techniques. She has since taken over ownership of the clinic, building on the foundation established by previous owner Friedrich Brumm.

Today, Cecilia and her team Saveria Renucci (Technician) and Shrushti Cherukuri (Receptionist) strive to create a welcoming, judgment-free environment where patients can discuss their denture needs openly. The clinic offers complete and partial dentures, implant-retained dentures, immediate dentures, relines and rebases, denture repairs, and exams, care and maintenance. The clinic also offers Ivocap injection dentures, which use a precise injection technique and high-quality materials to achieve a comfortable, natural-looking result. For patients who are unsure where to begin, the first consultation is free and takes approximately 20 minutes. Cecilia conducts a preliminary oral exam, assesses the situation and listens to the patient’s concerns before presenting appropriate options and treatment plans. The clinic can also assist patients with determining dentalbenefit coverage and filing claims, and can coordinate treatment with other healthcare professionals when needed. Whether you are considering dentures for the first time, need an adjustment or repair, or simply have questions about your current dentures, a consultation provides an opportunity to discuss your options.

Meet Winnie: My Best Friend and River District’s Happiest Resident When people meet Winnie, they usually notice her beautiful floppy ears, fluffy tail, and constant smile. What they don’t see right away is the incredible journey she took to get here. Winnie was rescued from South Korea before finding her forever home with me in Vancouver. Like many rescue dogs, she didn’t have the easiest start in life, but you would never know it today. She’s confident, affectionate, curious, and has an amazing ability to make people smile wherever she goes. From the moment she arrived, she completely changed my life. What started as giving a rescue dog a home quickly became gaining the most loyal, loving, and entertaining companion I could have ever imagined. If you spend any time in River District, you’ve probably seen her. Whether we’re grabbing a coffee, walking along the waterfront, relaxing on a patio, or stopping to chat with neighbours, Winnie is usually right beside me. She has become a familiar face in the community, and honestly, I think she’s more popular than I am! Everywhere we go, people recognize her, call her by name, and stop to say hello. She never turns down a cuddle or an opportunity to make a new friend. One of the things I love most about River District is how dog friendly it is. Winnie absolutely thrives here. Her favourite adventures include running along the Fraser River, exploring the trails, splashing in the water, and, of course, chasing squirrels with endless determination. She approaches every walk as if it’s the greatest adventure of her life. Winnie also comes to work with me most days, where she’s become our unofficial office mascot. She has a way of making stressful days a little brighter for everyone. She greets coworkers with a wagging tail and happily accepts all the attention she can get. She does have one funny little quirk, though. Behind the safety of the office glass door, she’ll bark at other dogs as if she’s the toughest pup in Vancouver. The second that door opens, her bravery disappears, and she’s immediately ready to become their best friend. As a rescue dog, Winnie reminds me every day how grateful I am that our paths crossed. She has taught me that love, patience, and kindness can completely change a life, hers and mine. She has also reminded me to slow down, spend more time outdoors, and appreciate the little moments that often become the biggest memories. River District has been the perfect place for Winnie to flourish. The incredible community, beautiful waterfront, and welcoming neighbours have made it feel like home for both of us. Winnie may have started her life on the other side of the world, but today she’s exactly where she belongs, bringing smiles to everyone she meets and reminding us all that sometimes the best stories begin with a second chance.
