Love for Inlet District The neighbourhood embraces its natural beauty and though I do not live in this neighbourhood, I was able to feel the strong sense of community when I was painting the mural at Site B. I love how you can see the mountains and not far off are forest trails and the beautiful waterfront! The gathering spots, local businesses, and emerging art events create a feeling of connection and belonging. I feel that it is a neighbourhood where people come together for sure, whether that’s sharing stories, supporting local artists, or simply enjoying a walk by the water or having a brewski at one of the iconic breweries. The balance of history, culture, and ecology makes Port Moody feel vibrant and alive, and it inspired me as an artist to create work that reflects this harmony. For me, the Inlet District is a place of memory and continuity: the cedar trees, ocean air, and wildlife connect us to the land, while the people and their stories keep evolving. It’s this intersection of nature and people that makes it such a meaningful place to create art.

Artist Spotlight: Mara “Mar” Cortez

ARTIST BIO ARTIST, MURALIST, AND COMMUNITY BUILDER

Mar Cortez is a Filipino-Canadian artist, muralist, and cultural worker based in Vancouver, BC. She believes in the power of art to heal, connect people, and tell stories that matter. Since beginning her full time public art journey in 2022, she has transformed walls, stairwells, plazas, and picnic tables into vibrant spaces that spark pride, dialogue, and belonging. Her work includes the Pagalala at Pagasa: Remembrance and Hope Mural tribute to Lapu Lapu Day Tragedy Victims at Astro Arts Festival 2025 among many other community-centred projects. Rooted in collaboration and storytelling, Mar’s practice blends bold colours, narrative imagery, and cultural symbolism. She often engages with youth and newcomers, ensuring that their voices and lived experiences shape the spaces she creates. Alongside her murals, she facilitates workshops on Baybayin, a precolonial Filipino script, which has become both a personal journey of reclamation and a collective act of cultural reconnection. Her art extends beyond the streets into galleries and brand collaborations, working with organizations such as Herschel, Arc’teryx, Kasama Chocolate, Modo Car Co-op, and Tanduay Rum. She has been featured by OMNI News, CBC, the Georgia Straight, and ABS-CBN, and has earned recognition with two first-place wins in Golden Brush Events’ Battle of the Brush competition. At the heart of her practice is transformation: of spaces, memory, and identity. Whether leading workshops, painting murals, or mentoring emerging artists, Mar’s goal is to create art that brings people together, honours heritage, and leaves a lasting impact.

FEATURE MURAL ARTIST STATEMENT

This mural celebrates the strength, spirit, and interconnection of community through the lens of local ecology. Bright, bold, and full of movement, it honours the shared environment we call home: from the ocean waves to the forest edge and the beings we coexist with. Featured in the mural are iconic West Coast animals: orcas, salmon, and a black bear, each representing collective care, seasonal cycles, and land-based wisdom. The flowing waves and blooming flora reflect the rhythms of nature, while the sun rising behind the trees symbolizes renewal and unity.

At the heart of the design is the word “Community” rendered in expressive script: a visual echo of belonging and togetherness. This work invites viewers to recognize their place within the natural world and to see community not only as people, but as the land, water, and creatures that support us.

Apex Fencing Academy recently opened its doors in Port Moody and is bringing the sport of fencing to the community. Eric Boisse, French Olympic champion, and Monica Peterson, 2012 Canadian Olympic fencer, are excited to share their knowledge and passion for a sport that has been an integral part of each of their lives. Apex is more than a fencing club - it’s a place where confidence grows, friendships form and the Olympic values of discipline, respect, and perseverance are woven into every lesson. A place that strives to be inclusive, accessible, welcoming and inspiring for anyone who walks through the door.

Fencing is equal parts physical and mental, often being referred to as physical chess. It’s a refreshing alternative to traditional fitness classes, offering both challenges to the mind and muscles. A key aspect of Apex’s mission is community engagement. The club hosts camps, school workshops, birthday parties and introductory events aimed at making fencing accessible to everyone. The team feels strongly about creating an environment where kids and adults feel welcomed and supported - a space that allows people to challenge themselves and learn new skills. Fencing is equal parts physical and mental, often being referred to as physical chess. It’s a refreshing alternative to traditional fitness classes, offering both challenges to the mind and muscles. For kids, fencing is an incredible way to channel curiosity, creativity and energy into something meaningful. It improves agility, coordination, problem solving and focus. 9

To celebrate Apex’s grand opening the club is doing a promotion of 75% off beginner classes starting in January 2026. The club will offer beginner child classes, adult classes, and a class entirely in French. Beginner classes introduce fencers to footwork, bladework, bouting and basic refereeing. Apex offers classes in two fencing disciplines - epee and sabre. Epee is a thrusting weapon where the whole body is the target and sabre is a slashing weapon where the target is the upper body. The introductory offer is a reflection of Apex’s core mission: to welcome the community with open arms and help people of all ages take their first step into the world of fencing. The club is located at 2805 Spring Street in Port Moody, steps away from Rocky Point Park and surrounded by many of Port Moody’s local restaurants and hot spots. Founder Angela Lusignan started making bath bombs as a personal passion project and first shared them at a craft fair in Vancouver. Customers instantly connected with her vibrant designs, natural ingredients, and joyful approach to self-care. What began as a hobby evolved into a successful small business that embodied Angela’s passion and her dedication to creating inclusive work opportunities.

What sets DisDaBomb apart is more than our handmade process or natural, locally sourced ingredients; it’s the story behind every product. Each bath bomb reflects teamwork, empowerment, and pride.

In 2017, Angela entrusted the business to Community Ventures Society (CVS), a Tri-Cities–based non-profit that has supported people with developmental disabilities for more than 40 years. CVS is rooted in the belief that every person has unique gifts to offer, and that inclusive communities are stronger communities. Through advocacy, innovation, and collaboration, CVS works alongside individuals and families to build independence, open doors to opportunities, and ensure people of all abilities can live the life they choose.

Today, DisDaBomb proudly operates as a non-profit social enterprise, powered by a diverse team of makers with developmental disabilities. Each member contributes their own strengths, ideas, and creativity. From personal signature bath bombs to new product expansion, they are involved in every step. Each member of our bomb squad takes part in the molding of bath bombs, packaging, labeling, and product development. They also represent the brand at markets and events making sales in the community and in store. Work is adapted to individual needs, and training is provided to help grow skills and confidence. This person-centered approach isn’t just something we talk about; it's built into every step of what we do. What sets DisDaBomb apart is more than our handmade process or natural, locally sourced ingredients; it’s the story behind every product. Each bath bomb reflects teamwork, empowerment, and pride. Over the years, the product line has evolved to include new shapes, blends, packaging designs, and products - all with input from the people who make them. Our community presence has grown steadily as well, through local markets, walk-in sales, retail partnerships, custom orders, and an engaged customer base that champions our mission. Coaching Corner with Brian Cady A Clear Start to the Year January tends to arrive a little quieter for many local business owners. After the rush of the previous year, there is finally some space to think. Not about growth or pressure, but about direction. Having spent more than 20 years running service-based businesses, and now working with owners across our local business community, I have seen the same pattern repeat. Most people are not short on effort. They are short on clarity. This is where goals can help, if they are approached simply. January is not about setting dozens of targets. It is about choosing direction. A good place to start is with just three outcomes for the year. One for your business. One for your time. One for how you want the year to feel. Then ask a practical question for each. What needs to change for this to be true by the end of the year? That question alone often reveals where structure is missing. Every business moves through familiar stages. Creation. Chaos. Control. Prosperity. Freedom. Many local service businesses operate right between chaos and control, busy and capable, but constantly reacting. Progress comes from small decisions made early. One process written down. One rule clarified. One responsibility passed on.

Ruffly Speaking, a new podcast hosted by local dog trainers Laura Garcia and Olivia Lam, was created for exactly that reason: to explore the human–dog relationship with curiosity, honesty, and a deep appreciation for the joy (and occasional chaos) of living with dogs. This isn’t a podcast for dog trainers - it’s for anyone who has ever shared their life with a dog (big or small), and wondered what’s really going on behind the wagging tail, the quirky habits, or the moments that make us laugh and cry. Each episode dives into a single story, idea, or perspective that expands the way we understand our dogs and ourselves. Through warm, conversational interviews and open reflections, Laura and Olivia invite listeners into a space where questions are welcomed, assumptions are challenged, and learning feels both accessible and fun. Together, the hosts bring a unique blend of expertise and lived experience. Laura, owner and founder of Curious Snoots (based in New West), is known for her thoughtful, curious approach to dog behaviour and her passion for helping people better understand their dogs as individuals. Olivia, founder of Olive Bark Dog Training (based in Port Coquitlam), brings lived experience as a reactive-dog parent, supporting humans with empathy and kindness through the emotional work of behaviour change. Both trainers believe that the best conversations about dogs happen when judgment is left at the door - something Ruffly Speaking wholeheartedly embraces.

Originally trained as a service dog, Chi was by her previous owner's side, providing invaluable assistance and support. With her keen senses and intuitive nature, she skillfully helped her mom navigate daily life with a cane, picking up the leash and offering a helping paw with every step.
