Hello Neighbours! Autumn is a busy and exciting time in Inlet District, and this year is no exception! School is back, the days are getting shorter, and before we know it, Halloween will be here. Artist Spotlight: Paula Tomko

ARTIST BIO Paula Tomko is a vibrant, high energy multi-disciplinary artist who views the world as a giant canvas waiting to be explored. She was born and raised in Alberta and moved to British Columbia five years ago, deciding to settle in Port Moody with her partner. Educated in geology and civil engineering, she often looks for creative outlets inspired by nature. Hiking the local mountains and swimming in the lakes and ocean have contributed to her creativity since moving to British Columbia. Her earliest art inspiration was a family trip to the Rocky Mountains when she was a child and an unrelenting need to draw Mount Robson. Her love of these geological giants and sketching them with charcoal was only the beginning of what has now become a beloved avocation. Positivity is her fuel and curiosity is her compass. She often refers to herself as a “Jane of all hobbies” and a perpetual student of the arts. From sewing and quilting to drawing and painting to dabbling in baking, knitting, embroidery and pottery, Paula thrives on learning new crafts and experimenting with different mediums. Deeply inspired by the natural world, her work is infused with the colours, textures and boundless energy of the wilderness.

COVER ARTWORK This fox quilt was created as my very first quilting project and serves as a heartfelt connection to friends back home. Made as a gift for a friend's child, the piece celebrates both friendship and the comfort of handmade traditions. Inspired by the beauty of the wilderness and the gentle presence of forest animals, the fox became a fitting symbol of curiosity, warmth, and adventure. Like many classic homemade crafts, this quilt was created with more love than perfection. While an experienced quilter might spot small imperfections, those details tell the story of a beginner learning a new craft and pouring care into every stitch. The process became a way to stay connected across distance, transforming fabric and thread into something meaningful and lasting. The finished quilt reflects the enduring value of handmade gifts: personal, unique, and created with the hope that it will bring comfort, joy, and a sense of connection for years to come.

FEATURE QUILT I started quilting when I moved to British Columbia as a way to keep connected to those I love back home in Alberta. I’ve made several personal quilts for friends’ babies and now one for my niece (feature quilt). It is such a special way to spend hours creating these magical blankets with thoughts of their futures ahead of them and what new memories we will make together. I hope as they grow, they think of their Auntie Paula every time they reach for their special quilt and that my friends and family have a reminder of my love and support despite the physical distance. This feature quilt that I made for my beautiful niece Wren includes elements of the ocean (to remind her of her Auntie and Uncle who live on the ocean in Port Moody), butterflies (to remember someone who loved her who has moved on from this world), pieces from her newborn onesies (so her mom can tell her the funny stories of what she did while wearing each one), birds (to symbolize her own name), and bunnies (for her favourite song). This quilt pattern is by Home Street Quilt Pattern and all materials I purchased locally from The Stitchery in Port Moody. I had lots of fun picking out all the threads, fabrics and the colour scheme for this quilt. What a joy to create with love!

Treat -orTreat?!

Maui is our first child, also a COVID puppy! It was a perfect time for mom and dad to get their first dog. He is a miniature American Eskimo, loves to talk, and full of energy! Maui could play tug for ever, but his favourite toy to play tug with is a ball… the hardest thing to grip onto, but we make it work. He is never afraid to speak his mind, but is also very smart and listens very well (at least for the most part). He can pull out many tricks, but of course at a price of a treat. Blue is our rescue from Korea - through Welcome Dog Korea and Loved at Last Dog Rescue. Mom here really manifested Blue, I wanted a second dog, but it had to be a rescue, same size and similar looking as Maui, but black. Then scrolling one night at 1am for rescue dogs, I found Blue! Blue is a Jindo mix, he was very nervous when he first arrived in Vancouver, but over the years his personality has grown so big. Blue loves to be lazy. He lays around all day, but becomes crazy before breakfast/dinner time. On walks we will bring him to the field where he gets his occasional zoomies, but lounging and getting belly rubs is his favourite activity. He is a very sweet dog, but occasionally has a feisty side - to be fair he was born on the streets. We are just happy to be giving him the best life possible. Although Maui and Blue are opposites, they really complement each other, and they have become the best brothers and are inseparable.
