Dear Neighbours Issue 8 of Brewery District Living magazine is a little reminder of just how much creativity, community and character can be found right here in New West. Love for Brewery District

There’s something so special about Sapperton: the walkability, the strong sense of community, and the way all the small businesses cheer each other on. It has that same warm, creative energy Katerina loved in her former neighbourhood, Commercial Drive, just with a quirkier, small-town twist. It’s vibrant, supportive, and full of zest: the perfect place to live, work, and raise her family.

What I love most about New West is that my Eldest “Sgwaz Cho” (Sgwaz is a Dakelh non gendered word for niece or nephew) is happy and doing well since living in New West. My Eldest Sgwaz has been employed for a few years at the Great Wall Tea Shop in the River Market. It is so special to see my relatives live well and thrive in such a cute and safe community. My hope was that “The Salmon" mural would bring together the Nadleh Whut’en and Qayqayt. However the artwork hit much closer to home by bringing my nuclear family together to help paint this mural. It was so meaningful to share that experience and creative endeavour with my “Sgwaz Cho”.

One of my favourite things about living in the Brewery District and Sapperton is that it still feels like a real little neighbourhood. I know quite a few of my neighbours now, although I think most of them know Mochi better than they know me. He's definitely the extrovert in this relationship. Between the great cafés, local shops and exciting new businesses opening, there's always another reason to explore the neighbourhood.

What's not to love? I always enjoy my experience at Newest Smile Dental. The staff are welcoming and friendly and the appointments are very efficient. Then I get to treat myself afterwards with a mouth-watering cookie from BAK’D Cookies! There are some hidden gems in this historic neighbourhood, including my favourites - The Zesty Lemon Clothing Co and Captain’s Oven Pizza.

We love everything about Brewery District, especially BAK'D Cookies. We are addicted!

There really is something for everyone here, whether you’re looking for archery lessons, health services, or the best cookies in the region. This is a neighbourhood where people feel connected. I love the mix of longtime and new residents and that every time you walk along East Columbia you inevitably see at least one neighbour - and dog! - that you know.

Brewery District has a wonderful community feel. I love the mix of history and modern, walkable streets, and beautiful riverfront views. There’s always something happening, yet it still feels relaxed and welcoming. With great parks, local shops, and places to gather, it’s the kind of neighbourhood where people truly enjoy living.

Artist Spotlight: Sus Cho, Randall Bear Barnetson

Sus Cho - Randall Bear Barnetson is a Trans Two Spirit multidisciplinary Northwest Coast Indigenous artist. Sus Cho is from the village of Nadleh Whut’en, the Dakelh nation, and of the Duntem’yoo Bear clan. The Artistic practice of Sus Cho interprets matters of mental health and wellbeing, identity, culture, and spirituality, through the framework of Northwest Coast Indigenous art forms. Sus Cho’s artistic practice and traditional storytelling aid in (re)conciliation, decolonization, & Indigenization efforts through intentionally integrating Indigenous Ways of Being. Sus Cho was born and raised in the urban Indigenous community of the Downtown Eastside in “Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada”. East Van is the Unceded Territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Coast Salish peoples. Sus Cho is a grateful guest of these communities that have sustained her Being. On this territory is Vancouver’s YVR International Airport, from which Bear received the Emerging Indigenous Artist of the Year award in 2022. Sus Cho spent her upbringing and professional career serving with missions on the 100 block of Hastings providing essential services to community members of the Downtown Eastside throughout her lifetime. Upon leaving frontline community engagement Sus Cho completed her Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2024. Sus Cho now has a full time studio practice in East Vancouver.

FEATURE ARTWORK The Salmon is about connection and community. I was born and raised in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. My home Indigenous community is Nadleh Whut’en. Nadleh is situated on the edge of the Fraser Lake almost as far East as the Fraser runs. The Talook (Salmon) is what connects the place of my birth to my home community and the resting place of the Dusneke (Ancestors). Every year, the same Salmon travel through the Fraser River from New Westminster up to the Fraser Lake. The Talook, our Salmon relatives are what connects us. The same Beings that sustain our community in Nadleh, are the same Beings that help sustain the Qayqayt. What affects the Talook and Qayqayt also affects the Nadleh Whut’en. We all have a responsibility to protect the lands and waters that sustain us, to care for the Beings that sustain us for all life is a gift. I was taught by my Elders from the Warriors Against Violence that one does not have the right to own another Being. Responsibility to care for other Beings and ways is entirely different to ownership and rights to said Beings and ways.

Saturday, October 31st from 11am – 3pm at participating businesses on East Columbia St. between Strand and Braid The Trick-or-Treat East Columbia Street celebration in Sapperton has become a wonderful example of what can happen when neighbours, local businesses, community leaders, and families come together to create something special. Now an annual neighbourhood tradition in its 4th year, the event gives children and families a safe, fun place to celebrate while strengthening the sense of community that makes New Westminster such a great place to live.

Creating a safe and joyful Halloween experience for children while bringing neighbours together. It is exactly the kind of grassroots event that helps make Sapperton a special and unique place to call home. In 2023, Katerina Tsangarakis-Senior, owner of the Zesty Lemon Clothing Co and City Councillor Tasha Henderson wanted to create a quiet, less scary, daytime trick-or-treating option for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers who perhaps weren’t quite ready to head out with the big kids on Halloween night. They are also two women who believe that small businesses are part of the fabric of a city and wanted to find creative ways for people to support and explore everything Sapperton has to offer.

Katerina and Tasha have boundless energy and enthusiasm when it comes to building community and connecting neighbours. Katerina’s business is committed to creating an atmosphere that is joyful, inclusive, and community-focused. Tasha believes that local leadership has a role to play in fostering inclusiveness and connectedness outside of City Hall. Paired together, they have made the event feel like much more than another Halloween activity - it is a place to meet new neighbours, see old friends, connect with small business owners, and to feel rooted in New Westminster. This year, Katerina and Tasha are thrilled to receive a Neighbourhood Small Grant to help grow the event. Neighbourhood Small Grants (NSG) are small, grassroots grants of up to $500 given to individual residents in British Columbia to fund simple community projects that connect neighbours, reduce social isolation, and build local trust. Events like Trick-or-Treat East Columbia Street remind us that strong communities are built not only through major projects and formal programs, but also through simple moments of connection. A decorated storefront, a bowl of treats, a friendly greeting, or a few hours spent celebrating together can make a neighbourhood feel more welcoming and connected. And isn’t that what we all want?! The success of the Trick-or-Treat East Columbia Street celebration is a testament to the people who put their time, energy, and enthusiasm into making it happen. With organizers such as Katerina from Zesty Lemon and community-minded leaders such as Councillor Tasha Henderson helping support the spirit of the event, East Columbia Street continues to show what a vibrant, caring neighbourhood can look like. Most importantly, the celebration is about community: creating a safe and joyful Halloween experience for children while bringing neighbours together. It is exactly the kind of grassroots event that helps make Sapperton a special and unique place to call home.

Meet Lily! Nicknames: Assistant Lily, Lilith, Lilo, and Pretty Girl Lily was named after the character Lily Potter from the Harry Potter book series. Harry is often described as having “his mother’s eyes” which are a brilliant green colour, like Lily the cat. Lily Potter’s character is also a kind but fierce woman, just like Lily the cat. She was born in Quebec in January 2019 and chose her family at just three months old. She is half Bengal cat breed, half mixed shorthair. She fell asleep in her mom’s purse on the initial visit, and it was love at first sight. She was a mischievous kitten but very social around humans and loved exploring the world around her. Lily’s parents trained her on a harness and leash right away, starting with neighbourhood walks and eventually buying a cat backpack for hiking trips! After one year in Quebec, her parents got married and an opportunity to move to British Columbia presented itself. However, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and her mom moved her to her home town in Florida while her dad began the house selling process and eventually moved to BC. Lily loved living in Florida and chasing lizards (and giving her mom a mini heart-attack when she escaped at night a few times)! Lily and her mom finally were able to join her dad and start their new adventure together in BC in June of 2020. Fast forward to 2026, she is a seven year old princess who loves being chased around the house, running on her cat wheel, and climbing her epic cat wall her mom created in their home in New Westminster. You can often spot her walking around the Victoria Hill neighbourhood, Queen’s Park, and the Glenbrook Ravine with her parents. Although her favourite activity is sleeping these days, she still has a sense of adventure. Lily is happy to have a mom that works from home most days. She is often called “Assistant Lily” and you can spot her on WasteKnot Weddings and Events social media account from time to time. She does not have a social media account of her own, so look out for a pair of beautiful emerald green eyes if you’re ever in New West!

If you had told my sixteen-year-old self that I'd end up building a brand around my perpetually hungry corgi, I would have laughed, smacked you on the shoulder and gasped, "Not in this universe! That’s crazy talk! Wait - I’m getting a corgi?? When?" I grew up in Montreal and studied actuarial science before working as an actuarial analyst. It didn’t resonate with me, and I eventually found my way into animation as a lighting and compositing artist. Growing up in an Asian household, I was expected to pursue a stable, traditionally "good" career. So ending up here was a complete twist of fate for me - and initially, low-key horrifying for my parents. I've always loved drawing, but for years it stayed hidden in sketchbooks as "just a hobby." Then came my corgi, Mochi, bursting into my life with his endless puppy energy. He's convinced everyone is his best friend, pretends his giant ears don't work, lets out dramatic sighs whenever I displease him, and never fails to make me laugh. He also loves food. A lot. Honestly, so do I, so we get along pretty well. Mochi drools constantly, and sometimes I wonder if he's just hungry 24/7. I started drawing him with all the foods I loved, and all the foods he wished he could eat. Ramen, sushi, pastries... basically anything edible. And those illustrations slowly took over my walls at home. Friends asked if they could buy prints, and a few drawings turned into stickers, notebooks, keychains, and eventually an entire little world. That's how mochidays was born. 19

As the brand grew, so did its cast. Mochi met Capy, a capybara searching for a new home after his pond was destroyed, and Chick, a tiny bird searching for a family of his own. Together they wander through little adventures, searching for snacks (mostly Mochi's idea) and discovering that home isn't always a place. One of my favourite parts of creating mochidays is seeing how people connect with Mochi. Some see their own dog in him, while others simply love a dramatic, hungry corgi. Even if you've never owned one, I hope there's something about Mochi that feels familiar. mochidays is also heavily inspired by Japanese stationery and its thoughtful design. Somehow, they always convince me that this notebook is completely different from the ten other beautiful notebooks already sitting on my shelf. I still don't know how they do it. Seriously, what kind of sorcery is that?

“One of my favourite parts of creating mochidays is seeing how people connect with Mochi. Some see their own dog in him, while others simply love a dramatic, hungry corgi.” That's the kind of magic I hope mochidays can have too the kind that makes you look at the ten beautiful, completely unused notebooks already sitting on your shelf and think, Okay, but this one has a cute corgi on it. I NEED it. Maybe that's why I've always loved a brand new notebook. There's something exciting about all those blank pages and what might end up on them. Somehow, mine led to mochidays. Now I get to make notebooks for someone else's big ideas. But business aside, sixteen-year-old me would probably still like to know one thing: When am I getting the corgi?
