RIVERCENTER INC. & the Cultural Economy: Aside from providing great entertainment, performance space, and support services for several area arts organizations, RiverCenter plays an important role in our local economy. As calculated by the Americans for the Arts Economic Impact Calculator based upon an annual budget of $2,760,000, RiverCenter activities result in more than $4.5 million in economic activity. This supports 153 full-time equivalent jobs and represents over $3.5 million in local household income. RIVERCENTER INC. & Tourism: RiverCenter supports conferences, meetings, productions, and other programs that attract tourists to our community for multiple days. Those visitors dine in area restaurants and support other retail businesses in the county during their visit. The entire local economy wins. Since our performing arts center attracts tourists to the city, stands as a symbol of high culture, improves the community's quality of life, and aids businesses when attracting talent to the region, RiverCenter receives a subsidy from the hotel/motel tax. The revenue is derived from taxes paid by visitors staying in area hotels or motels located within Muscogee County. These funds are exclusively dedicated to the maintenance, utilities, and upgrades necessary to keep the facility competitive and attractive for the city. Area residents do not fund this tax but they reap the benefits of having their very own performing arts center in Columbus. RIVERCENTER INC. & the Next Generation: RiverCenter provides extensive educational programming, both in and outside of RiverCenter, for area K-12 public schools. Activities include teacher workshops, study aids, pre- and post-visit lesson plans, subsidized tickets and transportation to low income schools, and access to the arts for over 20,000 students. RIVERCENTER INC. & Facility Partners: Through significant in-kind contributions RiverCenter supports the activities and performances of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus. Both are resident companies within the Center. ln addition, RiverCenter's south wing is home to the Schwob School of Music. Through this collaboration both organizations serve the community in uniquely different ways that would ordinarily not be possible. This synergy brings the university and our nonprofit together to create vibrancy and variety in Uptown.

FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to RiverCenter. Whether you are a returning patron or this is your first time at RiverCenter, I am glad that you have chosen to visit and hope that you enjoy your RiverCenter experience. We are at the midpoint of our season with more of the excitement of the live performing arts to come. One of the things that we try to do in selecting a season is to curate what we offer for our audiences. We like to have diversity reflected in many ways in our program. That has always been the goal of RiverCenter programming. Diversity is measured by a variety of criteria. Norman S. Easterbrook You will find cultural diversity in our programs Executive Director with the exciting Ballet Hispanico, diversity in genre with Ray Charles on My Mind to Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Look for diversity in genre from jazz to rock to country. How about diversity in age with country music phenom EmiSunshine? If your interest is in Broadway shows, we have diversity there from The King and I to Kinky Boots, Finding Neverland and Rock of Ages. If that is not enough, take a look at Squonk Opera with their mystical kinetic performance piece called Cycle Sonic which can only be performed outdoors. We will be bringing this whimsical piece of performance art to three locations in Columbus. In order for RiverCenter to remain relevant to our audiences, it is important that we bring new experiences that are exciting and interesting. At the same time, we revel in the nostalgia of the tried and true classics of the stage for that sense of familiarity. We hope that this season fits the bill for you in as many ways as possible. We could not present the programs that we do without the kind and continuing support of our contributors both corporate and individual. If you are not already a contributing member of RiverCenter, I encourage you to do so at any level comfortable for you. Your contribution makes it possible for us to offer a broad base of programing and makes our programs affordable for a greater number of individuals whom we hope will be inspired to follow your example of philanthropy. I hope that you will visit us often. I also hope that you will always feel free to let me know your thoughts about our programs and services. We are always looking for ways to improve and build upon what we think is an already pretty amazing RiverCenter experience. I am happy to see you at the theatre!

CONDUCTOR William Bullock, conductor, brings fifty years of conducting and administrative experience to his work with Cantus Columbus. In 2000 he retired as professor emeritus from Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music, where he had served as coordinator of music studies and director of choral activities. Previously he held similar positions at the University of Southern Mississippi and Tarrant County College (Fort Worth). His BME, MM and Ph.D. degrees are from Florida State University. He recently retired as Executive Director of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Bill has conducted and adjudicated choruses in seven south and southwestern states, conducted concert tours of Mexico and Eastern and Western Europe, and led study tours of Scandinavia and Australia. He has participated in international choral conferences in Vienna, Sydney, and Vancouver, founded the Six Flags over Texas Choral Festival, and served as Mississippi state president of the American Choral Directors Association, executive director of Southeastern Music Center, and choirmaster for Methodist and Episcopal churches. A choral literature authority, Bill has published journal articles, musical editions and arrangements, a book on the cantatas of J. S. Bach, and a well-received edition of the Brahms Requiem that includes his own modern, prosodic translation. A recipient of several awards, he is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, and various professional organizations (including the American Choral Directors Association) and is listed in biographical publications, including The New International Who’s Who in Music.

PIANIST Janie Lee Bullock, pianist, received the BME degree from Florida State University and the MM degree in piano performance with emphasis in accompanying from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she collaborated in many vocal and instrumental chamber music programs and musical theater performances. She has done extensive choral accompanying and has been pianist/organist for several choral concert tours throughout Eastern and Western Europe with the Columbus Civic Chorale and with the Young Presbyterian Singers. In 2007 Janie Lee accompanied the national winner of the MTNA Young Artists vocal competition in Toronto, Canada, and in 2008 accompanied the national finalist at the MTNA conference in Denver, Colorado. She has served as a church musician in Methodist and Episcopal churches for more than thirty years and has been the organist at First Baptist Church of Columbus since 2003. She is also active in musical theater, having been music director and pianist for Broadway shows in Texas, Mississippi, and Georgia. Currently she is a collaborative pianist at CSU’s Schwob School of Music, where she plays recitals, juries, competitions, master classes and auditions. She also is principal pianist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and has been pianist for Cantus Columbus since the group’s founding. 25

CANTUS COLUMBUS

Cantus Columbus, a professional chorus, was founded in 2000 by Dr. William J. Bullock. It presented its inaugural concert in the spring of that year at the Springer Opera House and that December inaugurated its annual series of Christmas concerts at Columbus’ Saint Luke United Methodist Church. The concerts of its subsequent seasons have been performed at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, one each in Studio Theatre and Bill Heard Theatre, the rest in Legacy Hall. The group has occasionally performed run-out concerts in LaGrange and Savannah. Made up of singers from Columbus and the surrounding areas, the chorus is proud of its performance standards and the quality and variety of its literature. Its annual Christmas concert, A Cantus Christmas, which draws sell-out crowds, recounts the Christmas story with music of master composers and familiar audience carols. Frequently the chorus also presents a spring concert. Except for one program of Psalm settings performed at First Baptist Church of Columbus, these concerts have presented lighter works in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Recent spring programs have been joint presentations with the Vega Quartet and have featured arrangements of the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, George & Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, and Irving Berlin and a diversity of “serenades” by a variety of composers. Now a resident performing ensemble at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the chorus is supported by grants, contributions, concert sponsors, and ticket sales. The group rehearses in Columbus at the Schwob School of Music and at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and First Baptist Church. STRING QUARTET The Vega String Quartet, Quartet-inResidence at Emory University, is cultivating a new generation of chamber music lovers through dynamic performances and innovative community engagement. The New York Times raved that “[the Quartet’s] playing had a kind of clean intoxication to it, pulling the listener along…the musicians took real risks in their music making” and the L.A. Times praised their “triumphant L.A. debut.” The ensemble concertizes both nationally and internationally, most recently in Baltimore, Chicago, Nashville, Sacramento, Berlin, San Miguel, and the Brahmssaal in Vienna’s Musikverein. Highlights of the group’s 201819 season include the Quartet’s debut at Amsterdam’s famed Concertgebouw, a multi-concert tour of Denmark at venues such as the Royal Danish Conservatory, and appearances with cellist Zuill Bailey at El Paso Pro Musica. The Quartet has become a Columbus, Georgia, favorite through more than a decade of collaborations with Cantus Columbus. That collaboration includes two solo appearances on the Cantus Christmas series, a concert of “serenades” by a diversity of composers, and five previous concerts featuring arrangements of songs by Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, George & Ira Gershwin, and Jerome Kern. The Vega Quartet has won numerous international awards, including at the Bordeaux String Quartet Competition and top prizes from the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition, the Carmel Chamber Music Competition, and the National Society of Arts and Letters String Quartet Competition. It tours throughout Asia, Europe and North America and has appeared at Weill Hall and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, Bargemusic, and Duke Hall at the Royal Academy of Music, London. The members of the Vega Quartet collaborate with some of the world’s finest musicians, including Andres Cardenes, Eliot Fisk, Christopher O’Riley, William Preucil, Richard Stoltzman, Robert Spano, Charles Wadsworth and the Eroica Trio. They also commission, premier and record works by leading composers. The Quartet is a frequent guest at numerous music festivals, including Amelia Island, Aspen, Brevard, Highlands-Cashiers, Juneau Jazz & Classics, Kingston, Mostly Mozart, Rockport, San Miguel de Allende, and SummerFest La Jolla. At Emory a unique aspect of the Quartet’s residency is bringing performance into the classroom, collaborating with academic professors to create interdisciplinary parallels and conversations. The group also has enriched the cultural life of its community, having founded the Emory Youth Chamber Music Program, which gives intensive training in small ensemble playing to advanced pre-college students. The Quartet was appointed to the roster of the Woodruff Arts Center’s Young Audience program, engaging thousands of students throughout the greater Atlanta school system. It also has held residencies in Augusta, Jacksonville and Juneau that combine traditional concerts with educational outreach, performances in non-traditional venues, and masterclasses for area students. Members of the Quartet are violinists Elizabeth Fayette and Jessica Shuang Wu, violist Yinzi Kong, and cellist Guang Wang. 27
