Cantus Columbus Cantus Columbus, a professional chorus, was founded in 2000 by Dr. William J. Bullock. It presented its inaugural concert in the spring of that year at the Springer Opera House and that December inaugurated its annual series of Christmas concerts at Columbus’ Saint Luke United Methodist Church. The concerts of its subsequent seasons have been performed at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, one each in Studio Theatre and Bill Heard Theatre, the rest in Legacy Hall. The group has occasionally performed run-out concerts in LaGrange and Savannah. Made up of singers from Columbus and the surrounding areas, the chorus is proud of its performance standards and the quality and variety of its literature. Its annual Christmas concert, A Cantus Christmas, which draws sell-out crowds, recounts the Christmas story with music of master composers and familiar audience carols. Frequently the chorus also presents a spring concert. Except for one program of Psalm settings performed at First Baptist Church of Columbus, these concerts have presented lighter works in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Recent spring programs have been joint presentations with the Vega Quartet and have featured arrangements of the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, George & Ira Gershwin, and Jerome Kern and a diversity of “serenades” by a variety of composers. Now a resident performing ensemble at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the chorus is supported by grants, contributions, concert sponsors, and ticket sales. The group rehearses in Columbus at the Schwob School of Music and at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and First Baptist Church. CANTUS CHRISTMAS 2016

Conductor William Bullock, conductor, brings forty-eight years of conducting and administrative experience to his work with Cantus Columbus. In 2000 he retired as professor emeritus from Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music, where he had served as coordinator of music studies and director of choral activities. Previously he held similar positions at the University of Southern Mississippi and Tarrant County Community College (Fort Worth). His BME, MM and Ph.D. degrees are from Florida State University. He recently retired as Executive Director of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Bill has conducted and adjudicated choruses in seven south and southwestern states, conducted concert tours of Mexico and Eastern and Western Europe, and led study tours of Scandinavia and Australia. He has participated in international choral conferences in Vienna, Sydney, and Vancouver, founded the Six Flags over Texas Choral Festival, and served as Mississippi state president of the American Choral Directors Association, executive director of Southeastern Music Center, and choirmaster for Methodist and Episcopal churches. A choral literature authority, Bill has published journal articles, musical editions and arrangements, a book on the cantatas of J. S. Bach, and a well-received edition of the Brahms Requiem that includes his own modern, prosodic translation. A recipient of several awards, he is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, and various professional organizations (including the American Choral Directors Association) and is listed in biographical publications, including The New International Who’s Who in Music.

Harpist Susan Bennett Brady, harpist, has toured Europe extensively, performing as soloist and with chamber and orchestral ensembles. She is principal harpist with the Atlanta Opera Orchestra, Macon Symphony Orchestra, and Columbus Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Young Singers, Atlanta Singers, Atlanta Boy Choir, Spelman and Morehouse Glee Clubs, Shorter Chorale, and Michael O’Neal Singers. Susan has performed as concerto soloist with the Macon Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Huntsville Symphony, Cobb Symphony, and CSU Philharmonic Orchestra. A freelance musician working out of Atlanta, Susan concentrates her efforts in the choral accompaniment and orchestral performance areas. Susan received her bachelor of music in harp performance (1983) and a certificate of special studies (1984) from the Curtis Institute of Music. Her major teachers include Marilyn Costello, former principal harpist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Marjorie Tyre, former principal harpist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Kathryn Case Holm, and Frances Miller. In 1982 Susan was a prizewinner in the Elizabeth Herbert Hobin Harp Competition, and in 1983 she attended the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood on a scholarship and was awarded second prize in the Young Professional Division of the American Harp Society Competition. A faculty member at the Brevard Music Center from 1991 to 2001, Susan is founder of the Atlanta Harp Ensemble and co-founder of the Young Artist’s Harp Seminar and Competition, an annual two-week summer program that attracts harpists aged 12 to 26 from across the nation.

CANTUS CHRISTMAS 2016 As a teacher, Susan coordinates a harp studio of more than twenty students in weekly lessons, harp ensembles, and informational harp workshops. Her students have participated in the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and other regional and school orchestras, won regional and national competitions, and attended some of the most prestigious music schools in the country.

Organist Joel Gregory, organist, lives in Montgomery, Alabama, where he serves as organist/choirmaster for St. John’s Episcopal Church and works in the business side of the medical field. Previously he has directed the Montgomery Youth Chorale and served in the positions of organist/choirmaster at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Montgomery, director of music at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Asheville, North Carolina, and organist at First Presbyterian Church, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Joel studied organ with Sarah Martin and Warren Hutton and choral conducting with Sandra Willetts. He holds bachelor’s degrees in finance (Georgia State University) and music (University of Alabama) and a double master’s degree in organ performance and choral conducting (University of Alabama). Joel is a frequent organ recitalist and choral concert accompanist. Recent principal performances include recitals at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City (2010) and at St. Philip’s Cathedral in Atlanta, Georgia (2013), as well as frequent recitals and collaborative concerts at St. John’s Episcopal Church since 2012. In the summer of 2015 Joel traveled to England to play several Evensong services at Salisbury Cathedral with Montgomery’s Church of the Ascension Choir.

Pianist

Janie Lee Bullock, pianist, received the BME degree from Florida State University and the MM degree in piano performance with emphasis in accompanying from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she collaborated in many vocal and instrumental chamber music programs and musical theater performances. She has done extensive choral accompanying and has been pianist/organist for several choral concert tours throughout Eastern and Western Europe with the Columbus Civic Chorale and with the Young Presbyterian Singers. She is a collaborative pianist at CSU’s Schwob School of Music, where she plays recitals, juries, competitions, master classes and auditions. In 2007 Janie Lee accompanied the national winner of the MTNA Young Artists vocal competition in Toronto, Canada, and in 2008 accompanied the national finalist at the MTNA conference in Denver, Colorado. She has served as a church musician in Methodist and Episcopal churches for more than thirty years and has been the organist at First Baptist Church of Columbus since 2003. She is also active in musical theater, having been music director and pianist for Broadway shows in Texas, Mississippi, and Georgia. Currently, she is principle pianist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and has been pianist for Cantus Columbus since the group’s founding in 2000. This performance is supported by a grant from the City of Columbus through the Columbus Cultural Arts Alliance and the Columbus Convention & Visitors Bureau. 20

THE LIGHTNING THIEF Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy has ten days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves. Rob is the co-author (with Michael Ruby) of two award-winning musicals: Love, NY and Strange Tails and is hard at work on others including Relativity and the multi-media Monstersongs: Martha & Me (NY Fringe), Samson’s Fire (The Cell), Gingerbread House (NYFA). PAT METHENY was born in Lee’s Summit, MO on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable onthe bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility—a 56

way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. Metheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre. As well as being an accomplished musician, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). He has also taught music workshops all over the world, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music, and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also has been instrumental in the

AN EVENING WITH PAT METHENY development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar, the 42-string Pikasso guitar, Ibanez’s PM series jazz guitars, and a variety of other custom instruments. It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as “Best Jazz Guitarist” and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition at one point

winning seven consecutive Grammies for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt, Charlie Chrisitan and Wes Montgomery) and it’s youngest member. Metheny has spent much of his life on tour, often doing more than 100 shows a year since becoming a bandleader in the 70’s. At the time of this writing, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.

ANTONIO SANCHEZ (Drums, Percussion) Four time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez is considered by many critics and musicians alike as one of the most prominent drummers, bandleaders and composers of his generation. Born in Mexico City on November 1st, 1971, he started playing drums at the age of 5 and began performing professionally early in his teens. Antonio pursued a degree in classical piano at the National Conservatory in Mexico and in 1993 he moved to Boston to enroll at Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in Jazz Studies. Since his move to New York City in 1999, Antonio has become one of the most sought after drummers in the international jazz scene. His playing is featured in over a hundred albums and has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz including Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton and Toots Thielmans. He has been the drummer of choice for 20 time Grammy winner Pat Metheny and has been part of virtually every project the famed guitarist has put together since 2000. They’ve recorded 8 albums together and 3 of them have been awarded the Grammy.

Antonio’s continuous search as an artist has pushed him to compose and lead his own bands and ensembles. He has released 4 critically acclaimed albums under his name. His first one, “Migration” was called “one of the best new releases of 2007” by All About Jazz and features a star studded cast which includes Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Chris Potter, David Sanchez and Scott Colley. His second solo effort “Live in New York” was recored during a 4 day run at the prestigious Jazz Standard in New York City and features saxophone greats David Sanchez and Miguel Zenon as well as bassist Scott Colley. 2013’s “New Life” was made entirely of his own compositions and was widely received by critics all over the world. It was the winner of the prestigious German Echo Jazz Award in 2014. 2015 saw the release of two very distinct projects that are important milestones in Sanchez’s solo career: “Three Times Three”, a double album which features three stellar trios: Brad Mehldau and Matt Brewer, John Scofield and Christian McBride and last but not least Joe Lovano and John Patitucci. This record includes six original compositions and three standards arranged by Antonio. 57

AN EVENING WITH PAT METHENY The second 2015 release will be with Migration, his working band since 2011. This edition of the band will feature Seamus Blake on saxophone, John Escreet on piano and Matt Brewer on bass. This album will feature a 60 minute long piece written by Sanchez called “The Meridian Suite” which pushes his compositional skills in a way that no other project has done before. In 2013 Antonio was invited by acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro Gonzales Iñarritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful) to create the original film score for his 2014 release “Birdman” (Fox Searchlight) featuring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts and Emma Thompson. This is a very unique project that features Sanchez’s drumming as the main musical ingredient in Iñarritu’s film. GWILYM SIMCOCK (Dancer) was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Whitney Young Magnet High School where he began dance training under the instruction of Lisa Johnson-Willingham at the age of 16. He has since trained with Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, Ballet Chicago, Joel Hall, and Central Florida Ballet. Since his first contract with Walt Disney Co., Antoine has danced with Busch Gardens Florida, Gwilym Simcock is one of the most gifted pianists and imaginative composers on the European scene. He moves effortlessly between jazz and classical music, with a ‘harmonic sophistication and subtle dovetailing of musical traditions’. Gwilym has been hailed as a pianist of ‘exceptional’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘dazzling’ ability, and his music has been widely acclaimed as ‘engaging, exciting, often unexpected, melodically enthralling, complex yet hugely accessible’, and above all ‘wonderfully optimistic’. Gwilym’s influences are wide ranging, from jazz legends including Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius, to classical composers including Maurice Ravel, Henri Dutilleux, Béla Bartók and Mark-Anthony Turnage. Although principally a jazz musician, Gwilym has composed numerous works for larger Classical ensemble that combine through-composed elements with improvisation, creating a sound that is distinctive and very much his own.

He co-leads the AngloAmerican Supergroup ‘The Impossible Gentlemen’ with British Guitar legend Mike Walker, Steve Rodby and Adam Nussbaum. He also tours with Classical virtuoso Nigel Kennedy, with whom he is writing a program of new music in the near future. Gwilym’s career is unique in spanning a huge range of musical settings. Testament to this is the fact that he was the first BBC New Generation Artist from a Jazz background, and that his album “Good Days at Schloss Elmau” was an album of the year in 2011 at the prestigious British music award the ‘Barclaycard Mercury Prize’. He has performed with orchestras, choirs, big bands, dancers as well as performing with musicians from diverse backgrounds including the classical, jazz, folk and rock traditions. Gwilym has also written music that has appeared on television and on stage, most recently composing the music for an adaptation of Edward Albee’s classic ‘A Delicate Balance’ at the Almeida theatre in London. He has frequently appeared on British television and radio and was guest presenter on ‘Saturday Classics’ on BBC Radio 3, and recently mentored and accompanied the finalists at the first BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year awards on BBC4 TV. Gwilym has led and recorded a variety of different projects. His debut album “Perception” was nominated for Best Album in the BBC Jazz Awards 2008 and has been critically acclaimed at home and abroad.

In 2002 she was accepted into the W.A Academy of Performing Arts and started taking lessons on doublebass.Linda was a James Morrison Scholarship Finalist in 2003 and in 2004 was an IAJE Sister in Jazz and received the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s award in 2008.She also received an honorary mention at the 2009 Thelonious Monk Bass Competition and received the 2010 Bell Award for Young Australian Artist of the Year.

Linda now lives in New-York City Linda completing her Masters at the Manhattan School of Music in 2008 studying with Jay Anderson, John Riley, Phil Markowitz, Dave Liebman and Rodney Jones. She now teaches the precollege division there and is involved in jazz videoconference master-classes for high-schools around the US.
