Message From the director It is a distinct pleasure for me to share the upcoming RiverCenter performances with you. Our annual season continues with shows that will delight, inspire, and amaze. In our halls you are sure to find something that pleases be it classical ballet, science fiction, opera, a very hungry caterpillar, or simply a story told with grace and artistry. RiverCenter holds a very special place in the heart of the Valley, not only by its programming and educational outreach but by its support of local arts organizations such as the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Schwob School of Music, Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus, Cantus Columbus, and the Columbus Ballet. Additionally, RiverCenter supports outstanding community events including

RISING STARS OF THE MET “The Metropolitan Opera Rising Stars Concert Series” offers fans across North America a rare opportunity to experience remarkable young artists on the cusp of extraordinary careers. For more than 125 years, the Metropolitan Opera has been the artistic home of the greatest singers in the world. But the Met is also the launching pad for the opera stars of the future. Some of today’s leading artists got their first big break by winning the company’s national auditions, as members of the young artist program, or by catching the attention of Met talent scouts. Stephanie Blythe, Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Deborah Voigt, Thomas Hampson, and Mariusz Kwiecien are just a few of the major artists to have come through the Met ranks.

BRENT FUNDERBURK, pianist, Praised by The New York Times as an “excellent pianist,” South Carolina native Brent Funderburk has partnered world-class singers and instrumentalists in concert and on recording. He has garnered respect as a distinguished recitalist and vocal coach in New York City.
Mr. Funderburk has participated in many renowned summer programs and festivals including Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, where he returned as a resident pianist in the 2015 Program for Singers. Other recent summer engagements include the International Vocal Arts Institute (IVAI) in Virginia and SongFest at Pepperdine. He is a recipient of the Margo Garrett and Marc and Eva Stern Fellowships along with the prestigious Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. In the realm of art song, Mr. Funderburk has made many notable appearances, including a recent performance in the Marilyn Horne Song Celebration at Zankel Hall. He has collaborated with rising young artists as part of The Song Continues at Carnegie Hall. His long-running collaboration with mezzo-soprano Naomi O’Connell has led to many U.S. recital appearances under the auspices of Concert Artists Guild, as well as radio broadcasts on New York’s WQXR as part of The McGraw-Hill Companies’ Young Artist Showcase. Mr. Funderburk has also appeared in recitals at Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Symphony Space and the Ravinia Festival, among others. Also known for his instrumental collaborations, Mr. Funderburk has maintained an active schedule with violinist Francesca Anderegg. The duo has performed at many U.S. venues, including the Chicago Cultural Center as part of the International Music Foundation’s Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert series. They have been featured on WQXR, Chicago’s WFMT, and MPR (Minnesota Public Radio). Recording credits include a debut release with Ms. Anderegg under the Albany label. Mr. Funderburk is on staff of the Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts at The Juilliard School, where he received his Master’s degree in Collaborative Piano under the tutelage of Brian Zeger, Margo Garrett, and Jonathan Feldman. LORI GUILBEAU, soprano, Hailed by The New York Times for her “beautiful tone and a graceful sense of phrasing,” soprano Lori Guilbeau returns to Theater Kiel in the 2015–16 season, this time as a member of the company’s ensemble, where she will sing her first performances of Helmwige in Die Walküre, Micaëla in Carmen, and Euridice in Orfeo et Euridice. Last season, she returned to her home state for Verdi’s Requiem with the Louisiana Philharmonic and to Theater Kiel for Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. She also returned to the Metropolitan Opera as the High Priestess in Aida as well as for the company’s production of Don Carlo. The soprano made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2012 as the High Priestess in Aida with Marco Armiliato conducting and has returned to the company for Voce dal Ciel in Don Carlo as well as for its productions of Götterdämmerung and Nabucco. She recently sang her first performances of the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos 17
RISING STARS OF THE MET with Theater Kiel, Giorgetta in Il Tabarro with LidalNorth in Oslo, and Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte with Shreveport Opera. On the concert stage, she joined the American Symphony Orchestra for Esmerelda in Schimidt’s Notre Dame at Carnegie Hall as well as for concerts featuring French repertoire by Saint-Saëns, Gounod, Delibes, and Massenet at the Bard Music Festival. Among her other concert performances are Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder with the Monterey Symphony, Verdi’s Requiem with the East Alabama Arts Association, and concert programs of varied repertoire for Verein Opera in Zurich and Den Nye Opera. She sang a solo recital in New York City that was presented by the Marilyn Horne Foundation and Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall and joined bass John Relyea in a recital presented by the George London Foundation at New York City’s Morgan Library. She triumphed as a grand prize winner of the 2010 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in which she sang “Give me some music” from Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra and “Toi qui sus le néant” from Don Carlos with the legendary orchestra under the baton of Marco Armiliato. She is the 2010 recipient of the George London/ Leonie Rysanek Award from the George London Foundation, first prize in the Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition, first prize in the Alan M. and Joan Taub Ades Vocal Competition at Manhattan School of Music, and the Richard F. Gold Career Grand from the Shoshannah Foundation. Addition, she received the Beverly Sills Award from the Elardo International Opera Competition and both the Edvard Grieg and Audience Choice Award at the Solveig Competition in Oslo, Norway. The soprano received both her Master of Music and Bachelor of Music from Manhattan School of Music, at which her performances of the title role of Fauré’s Pénélope received great critical acclaim. While there she also performed scenes of Agathe in Der Freischütz, Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro, Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera, Leonore in Fidelio and was presented in recital at the Terrace Theater of the John F. Kennedy Center as part of the Conservatory Project Recital Series singing songs of Duparc and Marx. A former participant of the Merola Opera Program in association with San Francisco Opera, she sang excerpts of the title role of Arabella, Alice Ford in Falstaff, and Mimì in La Bohème. Additionally, she is a former participant of the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiari, Italy; Intermezzo Festival in Bruges, Belgium; Lidal North in Oslo, Norway, and Sherill Milnes’ VOICExperience. SARAH MESKO, mezzo soprano, Sarah Mesko begins the 2015–2016 season with her role debut as Carmen at Washington National Opera in the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist performance. She will also cover Malcolm in La donna del Lago at the Metropolitan Opera. In concert, she will appear with the Columbus Symphony in Alexander Nevsky and with Mercury Baroque in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Recently, Ms. Mesko debuted at the Glimmerglass Festival in Vivaldi’s Catone in Utica to great acclaim. She was seen at Washington National Opera as the Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte and made her debut at Houston Grand Opera as Mrs. Segstrom in A Little Night Music. In concert, she appeared with the Bach Society of Houston as well as Mercury Baroque in Houston. As a member of the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program, Ms. Mesko’s appearances with Washington National Opera include Alisa in David Alden’s production of Lucia di Lammermoor, a striking role debut as Dorabella with Washington National Opera in their Emerging Artist performances of Così fan tutte, and her role debut as Hansel. In 2011 she made her debut in Madama Butterfly, first as Kate Pinkerton and then in a highly acclaimed role debut as Suzuki, conducted by Plácido Domingo in a Young Artist performance. The Washington Post remembered her as “the best part of the Young Artist Program performance of Madama Butterfly last year.” In 2009, Ms. Mesko was a national finalist of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, performing with the Met Orchestra under Patrick Summers. She is also among a rare number of singers who have won the Richard F. Gold Career Grant more than once: in 2011 from Washington National Opera and in 2009 from Central City Opera. 18
RISING STARS OF THE MET SIMONE OSBORNE, soprano, Soprano Simone Osborne is one of the youngest winners of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and an alumna of the Canadian Opera Company Studio Ensemble. Simone Osborne begins the 2015–2016 season with a return to the role of Gilda from Verdi’s Rigoletto and Handel’s Messiah with Vancouver Opera. She returns to the Canadian Opera Company to debut the role of Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen with an all-star cast. She will return to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 and a selection of soprano opera arias. Ms. Osborne will debut Berlioz’ Les Nuits d’été with Berkeley Symphony and join Bach Choirs for Handel’s Messiah. In the 2014–2015 season, Ms. Osborne was played Nannetta in Robert Carsen’s production of Falstaff at the Canadian Opera Company and made her role debut as the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor at Edmonton Opera. On the concert stage under the direction of Kazuki Yamada, Ms. Osborne reprised the role of Marguerite in Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher with Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, and Orchestre de Paris. She also debuted with the New York Philharmonic in the same piece under Alan Gilbert. Simone has performed with Vancouver Opera as Pamina in The Magic Flute and debuted with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel as Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro. She also debuted at Opera Hamilton as Gilda in Rigoletto and at Carnegie Hall with pianist Warren Jones as a part of the Marilyn Horne Song Celebration. In the summer of 2012, she was performed at the Saito Kinen Festival in Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher as Marguerite under the guidance of Seiji Ozawa. At the Canadian Opera Company, she played Gilda in Rigoletto, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, and Ilia in Idomeneo conducted by Harry Bicket. She also made her Vancouver Opera debut as Juliette in Roméo et Juliette. TREVOR SCHEUNEMANN, baritone, In the 2015–2016 season, Trevor Scheunemann will make his Atlanta Opera debut as Marcello in La Bohème. Last season he played Marcello at the Washington National Opera in a new production of La Bohème. He returned to the Metropolitan Opera as Morales in Carmen and Silvano in Un Ballo in Maschera. In the summer of 2015, Mr. Scheunemann debuted at Teatro Municipal de Santiago as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly. He also debuted in Orff’s Carmina Burana and in Bernstein’s A Quiet Place with the Montreal Symphony and Kent Nagano. In recent seasons, he appeared at Opéra de Monte Carlo in his role debut as Donner in Das Rheingold, Belcore in L’Elisir d’Amore with Baltimore Concert Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera as Silvano in the new production of Un Ballo in Maschera under Fabio Luisi, which became a Met Opera HD broadcast. Mr. Scheunemann played the debut role of Joe in the world premiere of Heart of a Soldier at the San Francisco Opera. Additionally, he debuted at Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly to great acclaim and Opéra National de Bordeaux as Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro. MOSCOW FESTIVAL BALLET: SLEEPING BEAUTY The Sleeping Beauty, a crowning jewel of Marius Petipa’s career, is often considered the finest achievement of the Classical ballet. It is a grandiose and refined blending of the traditional mime, expressive pas d’action and spectacular divertissements in a lavish theatrical setting. Tchaikovsky was delighted with the invitation to write the music for a ballet based on Charles Perrault’s well-known fairy tale. A baby princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, is saved by the gift of the good Lilac Fairy, who declares the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. The fairy tale, replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects, and courtly splendor, lent itself perfectly to the full evening ballet that was Petipa’s pride. Although different productions have cast the kingdom of King Florestan and his Queen in varying centuries, it is really a storybook kingdom set in the realm of the imagination. In the Prologue, the hall of the palace where the christening is about to take place is resplendent with color, and imposing with its high ceilings and great stone archways. The master of ceremonies, pages, heralds, ladies in waiting, and finally the King and Queen all promenade into the royal setting, looking most distinguished in their elaborate dress. Next, the fairies of the kingdom join the scene of courtly pageantry with the Lilac Fairy, six cavaliers and maids of honor entering last. All dance in honor of the King and Queen and baby Aurora, about to be christened. Each of the fairies dances her own solo, presenting a gift to the Princess. Just as the Lilac Fairy finishes her dance a strange and frightening rumble is heard. Its meaning soon becomes clear: the master of ceremonies has forgotten to invite the evil Fairy Carabosse! The grotesque woman, her face a white mask, her long dress black and tattered, enters in a huge black coach drawn by four ugly rats. Stepping down, she gesticulates with her hand and threatens with her stick that they will have to pay the price for their omission. In mime, she delivers the ominous curse that the
Princess will prick her finger on a spindle and die. The master of ceremonies is in disgrace, the King and Queen are in despair. But the Lilac Fairy has not given her the gift. She steps forward and assures the royal court that on her 16th Birthday the princess will indeed prick her finger, but then fall asleep for 100 years. Carabosse speeds off in a rage while the others surround the infant’s cradle as if to protect her from further harm. The Sleeping Beauty was the first of Petipa’s classics to be seen in Western Europe. Under the title The Sleeping Princess, it was presented by Serge Diaghilev (1872–1929) in London in 1921. In 1939, it was remounted in Great Britain and has been considered the foundation of the Classical ballet repertory in that country ever since. It has now been adopted worldwide, and performance of the leading role remains a kind of initiation rite for aspiring ballerinas. The Sleeping Beauty is a supreme demonstration of the challenge of Petipa’s style—steel point work, sharply accented spinning turns, soaring leaps, high extensions, brilliant battery (beats in the air), daring lifts and, in addition, it gives a fairy tale plot lavish stage treatment. However, its production actually checked a growing tendency toward shapeless extravaganza in 19th century ballet, adhering closely to the principle of choreographic symphonism—like the composition of a symphony—it had a certain formal structure. The Sleeping Beauty was choreographed in strict association with Tchaikovsky’s music. There are themes developed and resumed throughout the ballet, and each act is a unity unto itself. Tchaikovsky willingly took instruction from Petipa as to the length tempo and character of each musical sequence (as he would also do in The Nutcracker). The themes—a young girl’s coming of age and the triumph of good over evil—are developed dramatically and musically during the course of the ballet. Each of the three acts in cludes an Adagio for Princess Aurora, the first celebrating her girlhood, the second her falling in love, and the third her marriage. In these pas d’actions, Petipa makes fuller use than previous choreographers of the dramatic potential of
MOSCOW FESTIVAL BALLET: SLEEPING BEAUTY the Classical ballet, as when Aurora’s curved (questioning) attitudes become sharp (exclamatory) arabesques and her balances grow steadily surer. PROLOGUE King Florestan the XIVth declares a grand christening ceremony to be held in honor of the birth of his daughter, Princess Aurora named after the dawn. An entourage of six fairies are invited to the Christening to be godmothers to the child. They are the Candide Fairy, the Coulante Fairy, the Miettes Fairy, the Canari Fairy, the Violente Fairy and—most importantly—the Lilac Fairy, who is the last to arrive. As the fairies are happily granting gifts of honesty, grace, prosperity, song and generosity, they are suddenly interrupted by the arrival of the wicked fairy Carabosse, who is furious at the King’s failure to invite her to the ceremony. The King and Queen begin to remonstrate, and the Master of Ceremonies, Catallabutte, intervenes to take responsibility, whereupon Carabosse rips off his wig, laughing. With spite and rage, Carabosse declares her curse on Princess Aurora: she will prick her finger on her sixteenth birthday and die. But all is not lost. The Lilac Fairy, fortunately, has not yet granted her gift to the Princess. She acknowledges that Carabosse’s power is immense and she cannot completely reverse the curse. However, she declares, though the Princess shall indeed prick her finger, she will not die, but instead sleep for 100 years until she is awakened by the kiss of a prince. Carabosse departs, and the curtain falls as the good fairies surround the cradle. ACT I: The Spell Act I opens at Aurora’s 16th birthday party. Brightly clad peasant girls dance a divertissement with flower garlands. Holding the arched garlands overhead, they dance in multiple circles, weaving in and out to a waltz tempo. All await the arrival of the Princess Aurora. The ballerina princess bursts onto the scene, dancing a brief and vivacious solo in the manner of a carefree young girl. She is then ceremoniously introduced to the four princes who
have come to seek her hand. The Rose Adagio, the famous pas d’action expressing a young girl’s blossoming into womanhood, is about to start. Aurora begins the adagio in with one leg raised and bent behind her, one curved arm raised overhead. Some have read in this “attitude” pose, which Aurora repeats often, a kind of gentle questioning or youthful uncertainty. One after the other, each of the suitors turns and displays her while she maintains her pose. She releases the hand of the suitor supporting her, and raising both of her arms overhead, balances momentarily, as if tentatively testing her abilities. She then takes the arm of the next prince and begins the sequence again. After a brief interlude in which the princess dances alone, she returns to accept a rose from each of the suitors (hence the title, Rose Adagio). She pirouettes slowly and accepts each rose; one prince supports her while the next offers his flower. At the end of the Adagio, she returns to her attitude position, and supported in turn by each prince, she again releases her hand and balances for a little longer each time. Finally, as she frees her hand from the clasp of the fourth prince, she again releases her hand and balances for a little longer each time. Finally as she frees her hand from the clasp of the fourth prince, the curved attitude straightens into a sharp, arabesque extension. She retains her balance poised confidently on one toe, as if she has visibly come of age before the eyes of the adoring suitors. The Princess continues dancing a joyful solo until her attention is suddenly distracted by a strange woman dressed in black who offers her an unfamiliar object. Before anyone can stop her, Aurora seizes the dreaded spindle. The unwary Princess pricks her finger, grows weaker, and falls to the floor in a swoon. Just as those assembled lapse into despair, the Lilac Fairy steps forward. Waving her wand soothingly, she reminds them that the Princess will only sleep and she casts everyone into deep slumber along with her. The Lilac Fairy summons a forest of thorns, thickets, and enormous shrubbery to grow around the sleeping court. INTERMISSION
MOSCOW FESTIVAL BALLET: SLEEPING BEAUTY ACT II: Scene One: The Vision Act II takes us to a neighboring kingdom 100 years later. Prince Charming and his lord and lady friends are out for a hunt. The cheerful retinue amuse themselves with dances and games, but the Prince is tired of everyday diversions and stays behind to wander about alone. Suddenly the Lilac Fairy floats in on a boat with gossamer sails. She offers to show the melancholy Prince a vision of Aurora. The Prince is utterly enchanted by the sight of the Princess dancing lyrically and romantically amidst a tableau of fairies and nymphs, bathed in a bluish light. He pursues her but can only hold the Princess in his arms for a moment before she eludes him and disappears. She is after all only a spectral image conjured up by the Lilac Fairy. The Fairy offers to take the Prince across the lake, through the dense and tangled forest, to the castle where the real Princess lies asleep. ACT II: Scene Two: The Awakening The Prince approaches the canopied bed set on a high platform and, as the music heightens, he plants the awakening kiss. Aurora greets him. The King and Queen appear from either side of the stage and welcome the awakened Aurora and her Prince with joy. ACT III: The Wedding The final act ushers us into a sumptuous hall, graced with statuesque columns and a circular gold staircase crowned by a blue sky. It is here that the Royal wedding of Prince Charming and Princess Aurora will take place. A full series of celebratory divertissements is performed by the inhabitants of fairyland. Puss ‘n Boots, Bluebeard and his wife, Goldilocks and a Bear, Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf all dance. A highlight is the pas de deux of the soaring Blue Bird and his Princess. First dancing together and then separately, they compete with each other spinning and fluttering in sparkling flight, sometimes jumping so high they seem virtually suspended in the air. The man’s variation in particular, which features many
beating jumps while he arches his body backwards and forward (brises voles) is one of the most famous and demanding in the international repertory. The Bluebird’s Dance ends with the female lifted on the male’s shoulder. The celebration then climaxes with the Grand Pas de Deux danced by the Prince and Princess. They are regal, formal and confident dancing together. Prince Charming supports his bride’s pirouettes and displays her long extensions and secure balances. The Prince jumps and spins during his solo and the Princess spins on pointe with even surer mastery than she showed in the Rose Adagio. Finally, Aurora whirls into the Prince’s arms and dives toward the floor; the Prince catches her around the waist and supports her in the famous inverted pose known as the fish dive. All join the bride and groom for a spirited mazurka and the Lilac Fairy, standing in their midst, bestows her blessing on the happy couple.

BEN BLAQUE (The Weapon Master) Born and raised in the mid-west of Missouri. Ben Blaque was introduced to magic, variety acts and live performance when he accepted a job working as a stage tech for the Kirby Vanburch show in Branson, Misssouri. It didn’t take him long to fall in love with magic and illusions and the live stage shows that he wanted to create an act for himself. As Protege to Kirby, they both decided to start with the crossbow act. Kirby made a deal with Ben if he learned the act that he would feature him in his show as a special variety act. After 6 years of performing in the Kirby VanBurch show and establishing himself in the crossbow performing world, he moved on to perform all over the United States, many beautiful countries, and live TV shows, including season 7 of “Americas got Talent”, and NBC 2015 show “I Can Do That”.
KEVIN JAMES (The Inventor) is one of today’s most ground breaking and innovative illusionists. Some of his ideas have made it into the shows of Penn & Teller, David Copperfield and Doug Henning. ASIA LIVE NETWORK (Producer). Asia Live Network owns and operates the interests of producers Simon Painter and Tim Lawson,who began collaborating in 2007 on Le Grand Cirque at the Sydney Opera House. The show broke all box office records in the history of the iconic venue and led to multiple international productions. They repeated the critical and box office success over the coming years with Aerial Dreams and Adrenaline, again launching at the Sydney Opera House followed by extensive touring through Australasia and beyond. “Gerry was my life partner. She and I met as teens at a place called Scraggy Neck on Cape Cod. We would have celebrated our 50th anniversary this past year. She was a wonderful wife and mother who was primarily responsible for the fact that we raised three children—Heather, Greg and Patrick—of whom we are justifiably proud. She loved and doted on our four grandchildren—Harrison, Will, Caroline and Bert and would be thrilled to know that a fifth grandchild is on the way. In the mid 1960’s I was in graduate school at Princeton—only about an hour from New York City. We used the opportunity to go to many Broadway shows. We had always loved Broadway musicals, and this love was enhanced by seeing shows with legendary performers such as Ethel Merman, Barbra Streisand, Jerry Ohrbach, Angela Lansbury, Liza Minelli, Zero Mostel, Carol Burnett, Sammy Davis, Jr. and many others. I chose 42nd Street for this tribute because in October, 2001 it was the last Broadway musical Gerry and I attended in New York.” —Gavin Spence

Current: Dames At Sea on Broadway at The Helen Hayes Theater. MICHAEL STEWART (Co-Author) scored on Broadway the first time out when he won a Tony for his Bye Bye Birdie libretto. Subsequently he was the librettist for Carnival, for which he won the Drama Critics Circle Award, and Hello, Dolly!, which won him both the Tony and the Drama Critics prize. He also wrote the books for George M; Mack and Mabel and The Grand Tour, both book and lyrics for I Love My Wife, and lyrics for Barnum. Mr. Stewart died in 1987. HARRY WARREN AND AL DUBIN (Composer and Lyricist) were legendary tunesmiths both as a team and as individuals. Between the two, their prodigious careers spanned six decades. They wrote Broadway shows and revues and were pioneer songwriters for sound pictures. Their combined output of songs can only be described as astonishing. Al Dubin, born in Switzerland in 1891, died in New York in 1945. Harry Warren was born in Brooklyn in 1893 and passed away in 1981. His first hit song was written in 1922, and he scored his last movie in 1962. His other collaborators included Ira Gershwin, Billy Rose, Joe Young, Gus Kahn, Arthur Freed, Johnny Mercer, Mack Gordon, Mort Dixon, Bud Green and Ralph Blane. GOWER CHAMPION (Director and Choreographer of original 42nd Street) was awarded the Tony Award for Best Choreography for 42nd Street and also won the Drama Desk Award in the same category.His name is synonymous with some of the greatest musicals in Broadway history. He was the director and choreographer for Lend an Ear, Bye Bye Birdie (for which he won Tony Awards as Director and Choreographer), Carnival (Tony nomination for Direction), Hello, Dolly! (two more Tony Awards for Direction and Choreography), I Do! I Do, The Happy Time (two more Tony Awards), Sugar, Irene and Mack & Mabel. He died in 1980. RANDALL A. BUCK (Producer, Chief Executive Officer) has produced more than 50 productions across the globe for TROIKA Entertainment. Before joining TROIKA in 1999, Mr. Buck was Vice President and General Manager for Livent in Toronto. Mr. Buck was a stage manager for more than 20 years, surviving a year with Mary Martin and Carol Channing in Jimmy Kirkwood’s Legends!, a year in Japan with Siegfried & Roy, opening The Phantom of the Opera Music Box Company and opening Show Boat on Broadway. Cantus Columbus Cantus Columbus, a professional chorus, was founded in 2000 by Dr. William J. Bullock. It presented its inaugural concert in the spring of that year at the Springer Opera House and that December inaugurated its annual series of Christmas concerts at Columbus’ Saint Luke United Methodist Church. The concerts of its subsequent seasons have been performed at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, one each in Studio Theatre and Bill Heard Theatre, the rest in Legacy Hall. The group has occasionally performed run-out concerts in LaGrange and Savannah. Made up of singers from Columbus and the surrounding areas, the chorus is proud of its performance standards and the quality and variety of its literature. Its annual Christmas concert, A Cantus Christmas, which draws sell-out crowds, recounts the Christmas story with music of master composers and familiar audience carols. Frequently the chorus also presents a spring concert. Except for one program of Psalm settings performed at First Baptist Church of Columbus, these concerts have presented lighter works in RiverCenter’s Legacy Hall. Recent spring programs have been joint presentations with the Vega Quartet and have featured arrangements of the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, George & Ira Gershwin, and Jerome Kern and a diversity of “serenades” by a variety of composers. Now a resident performing ensemble at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the chorus is supported by grants, contributions, concert sponsors, and ticket sales. The group rehearses in Columbus at the Saunders Center on the River Park campus of CSU and at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and First Baptist Church. Vega Quartet The Vega Quartet, the string quartetin-residence at Emory University, is creating and cultivating a new generation of passionate and educated chamber music lovers. The New York Times raved that the quartet’s playing “had a kind of clean intoxication to it, pulling the listener along...the musicians took real risks in their music making...”, and the Los Angeles Times praised the ensemble’s “triumphant L.A. debut”. The quartet has toured throughout Asia, Europe and North America and has performed in major cities such as Brussels, Cologne, London, New York, Mexico City, Paris, Seoul, Tokyo and Vancouver. The quartet has appeared in New York at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall and Zankel Hall and in London in the Royal Academy of Music’s Duke Hall. It is a frequent guest at numerous music festivals (including Amelia Island, Aspen, Brevard, Highlands-Cashiers, Kingston, Mostly Mozart, Rockport, San Miguel de Allende, and SummerFest La Jolla) and has been the quartet-in-residence at the Van Cliburn Institute and on the artist roster of Carnegie Hall’s New York City Neighborhood Concert series. It also is on the Community Concerts Association roster and is a part of the Woodruff Arts Center’s Art for Learning program serving the greater Atlanta area. Since being designated Emory University’s quartet-in-resident in 2006, the quartet has undertaken a number of major projects, including a complete cycle of Beethoven quartets, a Bach-Bartók cycle, and numerous commissions and premieres of works by leading composers. It also started the Youth Chamber Music Program and developed innovative programs collaborating with other art forms, including dance, painting, poetry and theatre. The quartet’s live broadcast credits include NPR’s Performance Today (USA), the National Radio of China, Shanghai TV, Radio France, France Musiques, the Westdeutscher Rundfunk, and the National Radio of the Czech Republic. The quartet captured four of the top six prizes at the 1999 Bordeaux String Quartet Competition (including the international music critics’ prize) and top prizes at the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition, the Carmel Chamber Music Competition, and the National Society of Arts and Letters String Quartet Competition. The members of the Vega Quartet (violinists Domenic Salerni and Jessica Shuang Wu, violist Yinzi Kong, cellist Guang Wang) frequently collaborate with some of the world’s finest musicians, including Andres Cardenes, Eliot Fisk, Robert McDuffie, Christopher O’Riley, William Preucil, Richard Stoltzman, Robert Spano, Charles Wadsworth, the Eroica Trio, and the St. Petersburg Quartet. The Vega Quartet’s residency at Emory is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Abraham J. and Phyllis Katz Foundation. 78

Conductor William Bullock, conductor, brings forty-seven years of conducting and administrative experience to his work with Cantus Columbus. In 2000 he retired as professor emeritus from Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music, where he had served as coordinator of music studies and director of choral activities. Previously he held similar positions at the University of Southern Mississippi and Tarrant County Community College (Fort Worth). His BME, MM and Ph.D. degrees are from Florida State University. He recently retired as executive director of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Bill has conducted and adjudicated choruses in seven south and southwestern states, conducted concert tours of Mexico and Eastern and Western Europe, and led study tours of Scandinavia and Australia. He has participated in international choral conferences in Vienna, Sydney, and Vancouver, founded the Six Flags over Texas Choral Festival, and served as Mississippi state president of the American Choral Directors Association, executive director of Southeastern Music Center, and choirmaster for Methodist and Episcopal churches. A choral literature authority, Bill has published journal articles, musical editions and arrangements, a book on the cantatas of J. S. Bach, and a well-received edition of the Brahms Requiem that includes his own modern, prosodic translation. A recipient of several awards, he is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, and various professional organizations (including the American Choral Directors Association) and is listed in biographical publications, including The New International Who’s Who in Music.
Pianist
Janie Lee Bullock, pianist, has been the pianist for Cantus Columbus since the group’s founding in 2000. She is also principal pianist for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and a collaborative pianist for the Schwob School of Music, where she plays numerous recitals, choral concerts, opera productions, juries, competitions and auditions. Janie Lee received the BME degree from Florida State University and the MM degree in piano performance from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she collaborated in many vocal and instrumental chamber music programs and musical theater performances. She has had extensive accompanying experience, having played for the MTNA Young Artist competitions at national conventions in Toronto, Canada and Denver, Colorado. Janie Lee has played choral concert tours throughout eastern and western Europe with the Columbus Civic Chorale and the Young Presbyterian Singers and concerts for CSU’s Choral Union and University Singers. As a piano instructor, she has taught private and group piano from the preparatory through college levels. She also is active in musical theater, having served as music director and pianist for Broadway shows in Texas, Mississippi and Georgia. Janie Lee also has served as organist in Methodist and Episcopal churches and is currently organist for First Baptist Church of Columbus, Georgia. 79
