FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to RiverCenter. Whether you are a returning patron or this is your first time at RiverCenter, I am glad that you have chosen to visit and hope that you enjoy your RiverCenter experience. Starting off a new season is perhaps the most exciting responsibility of my job. RiverCenter staff eagerly anticipate welcoming you to our theatre and the moment that the curtain rises. This season we again present something for everyone. From the tradition that is Fiddler on the Roof and the unstoppable CATS to the Norman S. Easterbrook great music of Carole King, Jimmy Buffet, Executive Director The Coasters, Drifters, and Platters and The Empress of Soul – Gladys Knight; from the excellence of Complexions Contemporary Dance and Pilobolus to the breathtaking grand concert of multiple units of the premier United States Navy Bands ensembles sent to us directly from The Pentagon–and more, we know that you will find something thrilling, something soothing and something that will excite your perspective of our community and world. In order for RiverCenter to remain relevant to our audiences, it is important that we bring new experiences that are exciting and interesting. At the same time, we revel in the nostalgia of the tried and true classics of the stage for that sense of familiarity. We hope that this season fits the bill for you in as many ways as possible. We could not present the programs that we do without the kind and continuing support of our contributors, both corporate and individual. If you are not already a contributing member of RiverCenter, I encourage you to do so at any level comfortable for you. From that vision she left a substantial bequest to the RiverCenter, Inc. for the sole purpose of bringing the finest classical music to Columbus. Her philanthropy provides the necessary support to facilitate RiverCenter in planning and presenting just what she envisioned. For this program to thrive, continued and added support is necessary. His essays have appeared in the New Yorker, The New Republic, Vanity Fair and The New York Times. GERRY GOFFIN (Words and Music). Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Gerry Goffin met Carole King at Queens College, and their musical collaboration began almost immediately. They married in 1959, and that same year wrote their first hit song “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” (The Shirelles). The duo penned more than 50 Top-40 hits including “The Locomotion,” “Natural Woman” and “Up on the Roof.” In 1987, Goffin and King were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Goffin has left an indelible mark on American music. CAROLE KING (Words and Music). Pop music would be very different without the contributions 27

of Carole King, who at age 17 wrote her first #1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” for the Shirelles. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was 1971’s Tapestry that took King to the pinnacle, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop to the decade. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles and six Grammys. BARRY MANN (Words and Music) has written the melodies of some of the most influential pop songs in musical history. CONDUCTOR William Bullock, conductor, brings fifty-plus years of conducting and administrative experience to his work with Cantus Columbus. In 2000 he retired as professor emeritus from Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music, where he had served as coordinator of music studies and director of choral activities. Previously he held similar positions at the University of Southern Mississippi and Tarrant County College (Fort Worth). His BME, MM and Ph.D. degrees are from Florida State University. He recently retired as executive director of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Bill has conducted and adjudicated choruses in seven south and southwestern states, conducted concert tours of Mexico and Eastern and Western Europe, and led study tours of Scandinavia and Australia. He has participated in international choral conferences in Vienna, Sydney, and Vancouver, founded the Six Flags over Texas Choral Festival, and served as Mississippi state president of the American Choral Directors Association, executive director of Southeastern Music Center, and choirmaster for Methodist and Episcopal churches. A choral literature authority, Bill has published journal articles, musical editions and arrangements, a book on the cantatas of J. S. Bach, and a well-received edition of the Brahms Requiem that includes his own modern, prosodic translation. A recipient of several awards, he is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, and various professional organizations (including the American Choral Directors Association) and is listed in biographical publications, including The New International Who’s Who in Music.

TENOR Steven Tharp, tenor, enjoys a diverse career as concert vocalist, operatic star, dedicated song recitalist, and recording artist. His concert repertoire includes the 18th and 19th century vocal masterpieces (the Bach passions, the masses of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, and the oratorios of Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn) and extends to Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, Schonberg’s Gurre-Lieder, the Verdi Requiem and Britten’s War Requiem. Steven has appeared with numerous orchestras (New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, etc.) under multiple conductors (Sir Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim, Kurt Masur, Charles Dutoit, Valery Gergiev, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Marin Alsop, etc.) Steven’s operatic credits include performances with many opera companies, including among others, the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Netherlands Opera, Badisches Staatsoper, and the companies of Dallas, Houston, Seattle, Memphis, Omaha, Salt Lake City and Miami. The operas of Mozart and Handel hold a special place among the more than sixty opera roles Steven has to his credit, and his keen interest in 18th- and early 19th-century opera has led to roles in lesser known masterpieces such as Gluck’s Les Pèlerins de la Mecque, Haydn’s L’Isola Disabitata and L’Infedeltà Delusa, Scarlatti’s Gli Equivoci nel Sembiante, and Schubert’s Alfonso und Estrella. 45

As song recitalist, Steven has appeared at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 92nd Street Y, Carnegie’s Weill Hall, the Bard Festival, Caramoor, Newport Chamber Music Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, the New York Festival of Song and venues in Europe, Japan and South America. Steven has recorded for Decca, Delos, Newport, Albany and Naxos. His world-premiere recording of the complete songs of Edward MacDowell, accompanied by the late James Barbagallo, earned a Grammy Award nomination, and his recording of Frank Martin’s Le Vin Herbé was an “Editor’s Choice” in Opera News. Other recordings include Vaughan Williams’ On Wenlock Edge with the Ciompi Quartet, Handel’s Messiah with the American Bach Soloists, Schubert’s Schwanengesang with Jan-Paul Grijpink and a CD of Fauré songs with Rachelle Jonck. Recipient of a master of music degree from Wichita State University, Steven is associate professor of music in the School of Music at the University of Missouri.

ORGANIST Jeff R. McLelland, organist, received degrees in organ performance from The University of Southern Mississippi, The Eastman School of Music, and The University of Alabama, where he studied with Paul Andersen, Russell Saunders, and Warren Hutton, respectively. He is a past dean of several chapters of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and has served on the AGO Executive Council as Regional Councilor for the southeast United States. A native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Jeff is director of music and fine arts at Independent Presbyterian Church (IPC) in Birmingham, Alabama. His duties include, besides serving as organist, direction of all choral activities and administration of the nationally prestigious November Organ Recital Series and the annual Religious Arts Festival. He also serves on the board of directors for the Mississippi Conference on Church Music and Liturgy. Prior to assuming his duties at IPC in 2000, Jeff worked for seventeen years in academia in Mississippi, serving as organ professor at Mississippi College and William Carey University. He has worked as a church musician since he was 14 years old. Jeff performs frequently for churches and AGO chapters throughout the eastern United States. He was a featured performer at the 1997 and 2001 Southeast Region Conventions of the AGO. In August of 2003 he accompanied the Christ Church Cathedral Choir of Cincinnati (Ohio) in a residency at Salisbury Cathedral, England. He has taken the IPC Choir on performance tours to Italy, Prague, Bratislava and Vienna and in 2015 took the choir to Spain for performances at the Sagrada Familía in Barcelona and the Great MosqueCathedral in Córdoba.

PIANIST Janie Lee Bullock, pianist, has been the pianist for Cantus Columbus since the group’s founding. Currently she is a collaborative pianist for CSU’s Schwob School of Music, where she plays recitals, competitions, master classes, juries and auditions. Having worked as a church musician in Methodist and Episcopal churches for several years, she currently serves First Baptist Church of Columbus as organist/pianist. Janie Lee has always been extensively involved in choral accompanying, and she has been pianist/organist for several choral concert tours throughout Eastern and Western Europe. Specializing in art song literature, she has played numerous vocal recitals and has accompanied MTNA Young Artist competitors in Toronto, Canada and Denver, Colorado. Janie Lee also has been active in musical theater, having served as music director/ pianist/conductor for Broadway productions in Texas, Mississippi, and Georgia. For several years she also served as principal pianist for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Janie Lee studied pedagogy and for many years taught group and private piano on all levels, from beginners through college. She received bachelors and masters music degrees from Florida State University and the University of Southern Mississippi, where she collaborated in many vocal and instrumental chamber music programs and musical theater productions.

CANTUS COLUMBUS

Cantus Columbus, a professional chorus, was founded in 2000 by Dr. William J. Bullock. It presented its inaugural concert in the spring of that year at the Springer Opera House and that December inaugurated its annual series of Christmas concerts at Columbus’ Saint Luke United Methodist Church. The concerts of its subsequent seasons have been performed at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, one each in Studio Theatre and Bill Heard Theatre, the rest in Legacy Hall. The group has occasionally performed run-out concerts in LaGrange and Savannah. Made up of singers from Columbus and the surrounding areas, the chorus is proud of its performance standards and the quality and variety of its literature. From 2000 to 2019 the chorus drew sell-out crowds for its annual Christmas concert, A Cantus Christmas, which, patterned after the annual Christmas concerts of famed choral conductor Robert Shaw, recounted the Christmas story with music by master composers and audience carols. 47

The chorus continues to present a series of spring concerts. Except for one program, Psalmodic Pleas & Paeans (works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, and others), performed in 2004 at First Baptist Church of Columbus, this series has presented lighter works. It began in RiverCenter’s Studio Theatre in 2001 with Sentimental Journey, a concert of songs from various lands arranged for chorus and mixed instrumental ensemble, and continued in Legacy Hall with two additional concerts of international song arrangements: Traveling with Two Pianos in 2002 and, in collaboration with a piano trio, Strings Attached in 2003. Since 2007 Cantus Columbus has devoted its spring concert series to a collaboration with the Vega String Quartet, presenting mostly arrangements of songs by the five founders of the so-called Great American Songbook: Cole Porter (2007), Rodgers & Hart (2008), George & Ira Gershwin (2010), Jerome Kern (2014), and Irving Berlin (2019) as well as two concert digests of gems from these concerts: Porter and Gershwin (2016) and Kern, Berlin and Rodgers & Hart (2019). In 2011 the collaboration yielded Sensational Serenades, an impressive concert of rarely heard works by a great diversity of composers: Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Dohnányi, Bizet, Glazunov, Elgar, Sibelius, Wolf, Borodin, Vaughan Williams, Carl Nielsen, Max Bruch, Rudolf Friml, Harry Warren, Glen Miller, Geoffrey Bush and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Now a resident performing ensemble at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the chorus is supported by grants, contributions, concert sponsors, and ticket sales. The group rehearses in Columbus at the Schwob School of Music and at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and First Baptist Church. LEE ROCKER…OF THE STRAY CATS! Grammy-nominated musician and Bass Player Hall of Famer Lee Rocker made his mark singing, playing, standing on, spinning and rocking his giant upright bass as a founding member (along with Brian Setzer and Slim Jim Phantom), of the Grammy nominated music group The Stray Cats, who sold over 10 million albums, garnered 23 gold and platinum certified records, and were music video pioneers of the MTV. The Stray Cat’s worldwide mega hits “Stray Cat Strut”, “Sexy and Seventeen” and “Rock this Town” have become a part of the fabric of rock and roll. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has included “Rock this Town” as one of the 500 most important songs in rock. From the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine, to appearing on Saturday Night Live, to headlining the US Festival and touring with the Rolling Stones, Lee Rocker has seen and done it all. In addition to The Stray Cats and the Rolling Stones, Rocker has toured and performed with George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, and John Fogerty. In 1982 Rocker and his father Stanley Drucker, (classical clarinetist) both received Grammy nominations; this was something that has only occurred twice in the history of the Grammy Awards. In 2012 Lee appeared on Broadway in the hit musical "Million Dollar Quartet" and in 2014 he was inducted into the Bass Player Hall of Fame. Rocker has received numerous honors for his contributions to music and the arts, including being inducted to the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame and he is a recipient of the Visionary Artist Award by the City of Laguna Beach California. In his concert performances, Lee Rocker rocks every town and leaves every audience on their feet and cheering. Lee Rocker has been consistently touring, recording and performing around the globe since 1980 and has cultivated a fanatically loyal following of rockers, rebels and all types of music lovers. He is known for making his upright double bass appear as if it were a lightweight instrument as he spins, throws it in the air, catches and plays it on stages throughout the world. His concert show is a time for him to tell stories about his days on the road and in the music business for the last 35 years – including sharing stories about his adventures lugging the giant piece of equipment around. 56

BANDMATE BIOS

(Written by each individual) BUZZ CAMPBELL (Guitar/Backing Vocals) BUZZ CAMPBELL is an American guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. He founded his group, Hot Rod Lincoln, from San Diego, CA in 1990. Buzz met Lee Rocker while opening for him and approached Lee about producing his first release. Lee produced self-titled CD, Hot Rod Lincoln in 1992 as well as Blue Cafe, the bands third CD, in 1996. The title track, "Blue Cafe”, was written for Buzz by Brian Setzer, original front-man of the Stray Cats. In 2000, Buzz was asked to join Sha Na Na, 1950’s revival group whose legacy includes performing at Woodstock, a cameo in the movie Grease, and their own TV show from 1975-1981. Buzz left Sha Na Na in 2004, after Lee Rocker asked him to join his group. Buzz has been touring the world with Lee ever since and is on all of Lee’s releases since 2004. Buzz penned the song, “Crazy When She Drinks” for Lee, which was released in 2008 on the album, Black Cat Bone. In 2015, Buzz approached Lee with the idea of doing a theater show telling Lee’s musical story. JOEY EIGHTS (Keys/Harmonica/Backing Vocals) What can be said of Joey Eights other than he is a true rock & roll monster! They did their best at the Berklee School of Music to channel his brilliance into more refined forms of expression, but his feral hunger for raw, savage rock & roll always found him at the seedy juke-joints & underground blues hops where the primitive, real sounds of pure, unfiltered rock & roll could be found. He would beat up the pianos in these rough establishments for decades until the drunken crowds were sent into fits of unbridled ecstasy from the pounding fury. He has lately found the perfect outlet for his expression with the Lee Rocker Band, where his appreciation of real, original, unadulterated rock & roll is shared with the other members who quest for the perfection of the pure form. With the collaboration of these like-minded masters, who knows how the world will react to the straight up rock & roll savagery at its purest. LARRY MITCHELL (Drums) Larry Mitchell was raised in Southern California in the 60’s and has played drums professionally since he was 16 years old, in and around Los Angeles and Nashville. He is currently touring North America with Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats. His professional accomplishments reflect his love of Americana and roots music, which has included touring and recording for many artists such as Heather Myles, Wylie & the Wild West, Jann Browne, Rosie Flores and Trini Lopez to name a few. His studio work includes countless sessions for genres that range from blues to country to rock and pop.

T I C K E T I N F O R M AT I O N The RiverCenter box office has tickets available for these series and events: TSYS Broadway on Broadway, Synovus Center Stage, RiverCenter ArtsReach and ArtsReach Matinees. Tickets also are available for programs presented by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, CSU Schwob School of Music, and various third-party presenters. The box office accepts cash, and all major credit cards: VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. TICKETS AT THE DOOR—Tickets to events that are not sold-out may be purchased at the box office beginning one hour before the start of the event. SEASON TICKETS—Season tickets may be purchased at the box office, by telephone (706) 256-3612 or with order forms in RiverCenter publications and mailings. MY SERIES PACKAGE—Tickets to RiverCenter events may be purchased at a 20% savings as a My Series Package. A My Series Package consists of at least one ticket to at least five events per patron. GIFT CERTIFICATES—Available year-round in any dollar amount at the RiverCenter box office.

CUSTOM COMBOS—Tickets to RiverCenter events may be purchased at a 10% savings as Custom Combos. A Custom Combo consists of at least one ticket to at least three events per patron. SINGLE TICKETS—Single tickets to individual RiverCenter events may be purchased without a service charge at the box office at the corner of Broadway and Tenth Street. For a service charge, tickets also may be purchased online at tickets.com, or rivercenter.org GROUP DISCOUNTS—Most RiverCenter events offer discounts on individual tickets sold to groups of 10 or more. For information call (706) 256-3612. SPECIAL DISCOUNTS—Patrons must come to the box office to take advantage of most special promotions and discounts with presentation of appropriate ID. Military, Public Service, Educator and Senior discounts are available on single ticket purchases to most events. Student Rush prices are available all day on the day-of-show at most events. Patrons using vouchers or gift certificates should note deadlines and restrictions that apply. No refunds are given for ticket price variances or special offers.

I M P O RTA N T I N F O R M AT I O N BOX OFFICE & PARKING BOX OFFICE—The box office at RiverCenter, located at the corner of Broadway and Tenth Street, is open Monday–Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It opens one hour before each performance and remains open through inter mission. The box office is not open on federal holidays unless there is an event that day. FREE PARKING—Parking is available in the parking garage directly in front of RiverCenter, 900 Broadway. Parking for those with disabilities is available in front of RiverCenter’s main entrance. The garage is managed by the City of Columbus, not RiverCenter. HOUSE RULES NO BABIES IN ARMS—Everyone attending a ticketed event, including all children regardless of age, must have a ticket.

BACKSTAGE AREAS RESTRICTED—For safety and security and out of respect for performers’ privacy, patrons are not given access to backstage areas before or after performances. HOUSE OPENING AND LATE ARRIVALS— RiverCenter’s Grand Lobby opens one hour prior to events and seating begins approximately 30 minutes before curtain. At the discretion of house management and in compliance with artists’ contractual agreements, latecomers will be seated at appropriate intervals during events. Latecomers may be seated near the entry doors out of courtesy to performers and other patrons. PROHIBITED EQUIPMENT—Please be courteous and turn off devices such as cell phones and pagers. Photography and recording is prohibited in the theatres. SMOKE-FREE POLICY—RiverCenter is a 71

Food and drink is not permitted in the theatres. COURTESY CUPS—Refillable Courtesy Cups will now be sold at RiverCenter concessions for $10 each. These cups will be allowed into Bill Heard Theatre during select RiverCenter performances. PRE-PURCHASE DRINKS—Pre-Purchase your drinks and other concession items before the show to maximize your intermission experience. Outside beverages are not permitted. ELEVATOR—A patron elevator is located between the entrances to Bill Heard Theatre and Studio Theatre. WHEELCHAIRS—Wheelchairs are available for patrons needing help getting to or from seating. Ushers will provide assistance.

LOST AND FOUND—Lost items should be given to an usher for storing with RiverCenter Security. These items are retained by Security for sixty days then donated to Valley Rescue Mission, Inc. Owners may claim lost items by calling (706) 256-3610. Applause, the program guide for RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, is published periodically by RiverCenter, Inc. and distributed to patrons of season shows. RIVERCENTER INC. & the Cultural Economy:  Aside from providing great entertainment, performance space, and support services for several area arts organizations, RiverCenter plays an important role in our local economy. As calculated by the Americans for the Arts Economic Impact Calculator, based upon an annual budget of $3,292,506, RiverCenter activities result in more than $4.9 million in economic activity. This supports 165 full-time equivalent jobs, represents over $3.5 million in local household income and generates $480,400 in state and local government revenue. With the advent of RiverCenter becoming a location for originating touring productions, this impact will be broadened and become more stable. RIVERCENTER INC. & Tourism:  RiverCenter supports conferences, meetings, productions, and other programs that attract tourists to our community for multiple days. Those visitors dine in area restaurants and support other retail businesses in the county during their visit. The entire local economy wins. Since our performing arts center attracts tourists to the city, stands as a symbol of high culture, improves the community’s quality of life, and aids businesses when attracting talent to the region, RiverCenter receives a subsidy from the hotel/motel tax. The revenue is derived from taxes paid by visitors staying in area hotels or motels located within Muscogee County. These funds are exclusively dedicated to the maintenance, utilities, and upgrades necessary to keep the facility competitive and attractive for the city. Area residents do not fund this tax but they reap the benefits of having their very own performing arts center in Columbus. RIVERCENTER INC. & the Next Generation:  RiverCenter provides extensive educational programming, both in and outside of RiverCenter, for area K-12 public schools. Activities include teacher workshops, study aids, pre- and post-visit lesson plans, subsidized tickets and transportation to low income schools, and access to the arts for over 20,000 students. RIVERCENTER INC. & Facility Partners:  Through significant in-kind contributions valued at over $175,000, RiverCenter supports the activities and performances of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus. Both are resident companies within the Center. ln addition, RiverCenter’s south wing is home to the Schwob School of Music. Through this collaboration both organizations serve the community in uniquely different ways that would ordinarily not be possible. This synergy brings the university and our nonprofit together to create vibrancy and variety in Uptown.
