FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to RiverCenter. Whether you are a returning patron or this is your first time at RiverCenter, I am glad that you have chosen to visit and hope that you enjoy your RiverCenter experience. Starting off a new season is perhaps the most exciting responsibility of my job. RiverCenter staff eagerly anticipate welcoming you to our theatre and the moment that the curtain rises. This season we again present something for everyone. From the tradition that is Fiddler on the Roof and the unstoppable CATS to the Norman S. Easterbrook great music of Carole King, Jimmy Buffet, Executive Director The Coasters, Drifters, and Platters and The Empress of Soul – Gladys Knight; from the excellence of Complexions Contemporary Dance and Pilobolus to the breathtaking grand concert of multiple units of the premier United States Navy Bands ensembles sent to us directly from The Pentagon–and more, we know that you will find something thrilling, something soothing and something that will excite your perspective of our community and world. In order for RiverCenter to remain relevant to our audiences, it is important that we bring new experiences that are exciting and interesting. At the same time, we revel in the nostalgia of the tried and true classics of the stage for that sense of familiarity. We hope that this season fits the bill for you in as many ways as possible. We could not present the programs that we do without the kind and continuing support of our contributors, both corporate and individual. If you are not already a contributing member of RiverCenter, I encourage you to do so at any level comfortable for you. Thirty years later, he and Sheldon Harnick gave birth to The Body Beautiful in Philadelphia. In between was Catch a Star and Mr. Wonderful (starring Sammy Davis Jr.). Bock and Harnick’s celebrated collaboration yielded five scores in seven years: The Body Beautiful, Fiorello (winner of the Broadway triple crown: Tony Award, NY Critics Circle Award, Pulitzer Prize for Drama),Tenderloin, She Loves Me, Fiddler on the Roof (nine Tonys, including Best Musical), The Apple Tree (and to have had Eddie Sauter as the original orchestrator of The Apple Tree was a gift to this composer beyond measure) and The Rothschilds. Bock and Harnick have been inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame. SHELDON HARNICK (Lyricist) Mr. Harnick is the recipient of a Tony and Drama Desk Award for Lifetime Achievement. His career began in the 1950s with songs in revues both on and off Broadway (e.g. “The Boston Beguine,” “The Merry Little Minuet”). With Jerry Bock he cre-
ated a number of memorable musicals including Fiorello (Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize), She Loves Me (Grammy) and Fiddler on the Roof(Tony). JEROME ROBBINS (Original Choreography & Direction) Mr. Robbins is world renowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets as well as his work as a director and choreographer in theater, movies and television. His Broadway shows include On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby, High Button Shoes, West Side Story, The King and I, Gypsy, Peter Pan, Miss Liberty, Call Me Madam, and Fiddler on the Roof. His last Broadway production in 1989, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Director. Among the more than 60 ballets he created are Fancy Free; Afternoon of a Faun; The Concert; Dances at a Gathering; In the Night; In G Major; Other Dances; Glass Pieces and Ives, Songs; which are in the repertories of New York City Ballet and other major dance companies throughout the world. His last ballets include A Suite of Dances created for Mikhail Baryshnikov (1994), 2 & 3 Part Inventions (1994), West Side Story Suite (1995) and Brandenburg (1996). From 2000-2010, Mr. Sher was Artistic Director of Seattle’s Intiman Theatre, where his credits include the world premieres of Prayer for My Enemy and Singing Forest by Craig Lucas and Nickel and Dimed, Joan Holden’s adaptation of the nonfiction bestseller by Barbara Ehrenreich, and plays by Chekhov, Shakespeare, Goldoni and Tony Kushner, among other credits. His New York credits include the Theatre for a New Audience productions of Cymbelinewhich premiered in England and was the first American Shakespeare production at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and for which he received the 2001 Callaway Award and the American premiere of Harley Granville-Barker’s Waste, winner of the 2000 Best Play Obie. He is a graduate of Holy Cross College and received his graduate training in a class of international theatre artists at the University of Leeds in England. HOFESH SHECHTER (Choreography) Israeliborn, UK-based choreographer Hofesh Shechter began his professional dance career with Tel Aviv’s Batsheva Dance Company. While working with Batsheva, he began studying percussion and went on to become a drummer in a rock band. He made his choreographic debut in the UK in 2003 with the duet Fragments, followed by Cult, Uprising, and In Your Rooms. In 2008, he formed Hofesh Shechter Company, an international cast of outstanding dancers and musicians, to create an extended version of Uprising/In Your Rooms: The Choreographer’s Cut. In 2010, Shechter presented Political Mother at the Brighton Festival, which brought the company international attention. It has since toured Australia, Asia, Europe, and the US, including at BAM. Shechter has worked as a choreographer at the UK’s Royal Court Theatre and the National Theatre and for BBC 4’s popular drama “Skins.” He is the recipient of
many prizes, including the 3rd Serge Diaghilev choreography award for Fragments, an Audience Choice Award at the Place Prize 2004 for Cult, Movimentos Most Promising Newcomer in Dance Award in 2009, and the British Theatre Institute’s Award for Excellence in International Dance in 2011. Knight is a two-time Grammy winner in the gospel category, and “Where My Heart Belongs” dropped on September 9th from Deseret Book, and recently won an NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Gospel Album.” “Another Journey” enjoyed success from the hit “I Who Have Nothing” as well as the up-tempo track “Settle,” produced by Randy Jackson, with whom she previously collaborated with on her Grammy-winning album, “At Last.” Knight also enjoyed the success of her song “You and I Ain’t Nothin’ No More” which appeared over the end credits of the critically-acclaimed Lee Daniels film THE BUTLER. Last month, Knight returned to the small screen in the Lifetime original movie “Seasons of Love”. In the story about two lovers as they journey through life, love and family, Knight stars alongside Oscar-nominee Taraji P. Henson and fellow Grammy winner Cliff “Method Man” Smith. In the New Year she will guest on Lee Daniels and FOX TV’s new series “Empire” opposite Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. Also on the small screen, Knight recently shared her musical expertise on the second season of Centric’s original series “Apollo Live.” Joining judges Doug E. Fresh and Michael Bivins, the legendary songstress gave guidance to contestants as they took the stage with the hope to jumpstart their career in the entertainment industry. No stranger to performing and light choreography over the course of her career, Knight raised the stakes when she put on her dancing shoes in the spring of 2012. She joined the cast of ABC’s hit reality competition “Dancing with the Stars” for season 14, partnering with Tristan MacManus. The year of 2011 was a year of much recognition as Knight was both honoring and being honored, first at a Michael Jackson tribute concert, and then at the 2011 Soul Train Awards. At the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, Knight joined such performers as Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, and Smokey Robinson in a tribute to the legendary King of Pop in a concert event called “Michael Forever.” Following that, Knight was honored with a “Legend Award” alongside fellow recipients Earth, Wind & Fire on the BET broadcast of the 3rd annual Soul Train Awards, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. Knight, known as the “Empress of Soul,” a longtime Las Vegas resident, returned to the Strip in the late-2000s to the famed Tropicana Hotel for a special engagement that ran in the newly named Gladys Knight Theater, making her the first African-American performer to have a venue named after her in Las Vegas. This followed a successful four-year show run at The Flamingo, which the Las Vegas Review-Journal praised as “the number-one show on the Strip.” A tireless humanitarian, Knight is an iconic supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of America, to which she donated a Randy Jackson-produced song, “The Dream.” As the 38
celebrated singer of the timeless song “Midnight Train to Georgia,” Knight was a natural fit as national spokesperson and host of Amtrak’s National Train Day, the celebration of which took place Washington, DC’s famed Union Station. In February 2011, Knight reunited with Elton John, Dionne Warwick, and Stevie Wonder for the first time in 25 years to perform their Grammy-winning song, “That’s What Friends Are For” at an AIDS research benefit at the downtown Cipriani in New York. Adored the world over, Knight then toured across the UK, performing at packed arenas that included a sold-out performance at Wembley Stadium.
Knight fans enjoyed Before Me – Knight’s last big commercial effort – which paid homage to the great legends of song – Ella, Duke, Billie, Lena – as well as the many artists who served as Knight’s friends, mentors, colleagues and inspiration throughout her career. Knight’s second collaboration with the Saints Unified Voices gospel choir, A Christmas Celebration, was an album of holiday classics. Coming off of a “Best Gospel/Choir Album” Grammy win with their debut album One Voice, Knight again directed the 100-member multi-cultural choir she formed, injecting their unique flavor and definitive soul into such Christmas staples as “Silent Night,” “White Christmas,” and a medley of “Winter Wonderland/Jingle Bells” among others. Adding to her already impressive collection, Knight won another Grammy for her duet with the late Ray Charles on his posthumous album Genius Loves Company (2005). The duo won for Best Gospel Performance for their duet “Heaven Help Us All.” Knight’s solo album At Last also won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album in 2002 and featured a duet with Jamie Foxx, “I Wanna Be Loved.” During the televised opening ceremonies kicking off the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Knight performed “This is Our Time” (which she co-wrote with husband William McDowell), which was featured on a commemorative Olympic album. 39
A tireless performer who still wows audiences around the country and the world, Knight also finds the time to make forays into film and television. Her version of “I Hope You Dance” played during the end credits of Tyler Perry’s THE FAMILY THAT PREYS TOGETHER, and she appeared in his film I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF (which featured her song “The Need to Be”). She also starred in the holiday-themed HOLIDAZE, her first animated project to which she also contributed a track, UNBEATABLE HAROLD, and the Harrison Ford film HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE. On the small screen, Knight did a cameo on the Emmy-winning NBC hit comedy “30 Rock”, and also appeared in NBC’s “Las Vegas,” former CBS hit “JAG,” and former FOX talent competitions “American Juniors” and “Duets.” She also starred as Jamie Foxx’s mother on “The Jamie Foxx Show.” Knight has appeared as a guest judge on FOX’s smash hit “American Idol,” and has performed in the show’s always star-studded finale. In season two of “Idol,” Knight famously dubbed eventual winner Ruben Studdard the ‘Velvet Teddy Bear” while she sat in the guest judge’s chair. Georgia-born, Knight began performing gospel music at age four in the Mount Mariah Baptist Church and sang as a guest soloist with the Morris Brown College Choir. Three years later, she won the grand prize on television’s “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour,” and the following year, her mother Elizabeth Knight created the group consisting of Gladys, her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda and her cousins William and Elenor Guest. They called themselves The Pips in honor of their cousin/manager, James Pip Woods. In 1959, Brenda and Elenor left the group, replaced by cousin Edward Patten and friend Langston George. The group was renamed Gladys Knight & The Pips, and following George’s departure in 1962, the classic line-up was in place. The group debuted their first album in 1960, when Knight was just sixteen. With Knight singing lead and The Pips providing lush harmonies and graceful choreography, the group went on to achieve icon status, having recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Top 20 hits, like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and “If I Were Your Woman,” set the stage for an amazing run in the mid-1970s, with Top 10 gold-certified singles like “Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye),” “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination,” “Best Thing to Ever Happen to Me”

and the #1 smash “Midnight Train to Georgia” established Gladys Knight and The Pips as the premiere pop/R&B vocal ensemble in the world. The party kept rolling with hits like “On and On” from the Academy Award nominated soundtrack of Curtis Mayfield’s “Claudine,” the 1974 comedy about love in the inner city. Knight enjoyed another #1 hit in 1985 when she teamed with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dionne Warwick on “That’s What Friends are For.” She and Stevie Wonder sang together again for the successful Frank Sinatra Duets II album, joining his voice for the song “For Once in My Life” in 1994. All told, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade: “Good Woman” (1991); “Just for You” (1994); the inspirational “Many Different Roads” (1999); and “At Last” (2001). “At Last” showed the world that she still has what it takes to record a hit album, employing the talents of contemporary producers like Randy Jackson, Gary Brown and James D.C. Williams III, Jon John, Jamey Jaz, Keith Thomas, Tom Dowd and Tiger Roberts. Her involvement in other creative undertakings, business ventures and humanitarian activities has been extensive, and has brought her honors from industry and community alike. In 1986, she produced and starred in the Cable Ace Award-winning “Sisters in the Name of Love,” an HBO special co-starring Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle. That same year, she showcased her acting ability when she co-starred with Flip Wilson in the CBS comedy “Charlie & Co.” Other acting roles followed on such TV shows as “Benson,” “The Jefferson’s” and “New York Undercover,” and in such television films as “Pipe Dreams,” “An Enemy Among Us” and “Desperado.” She recorded the title theme for the James Bond movie “License to Kill” (1989). In 1999, she completed a starring run on Broadway in the smash musical hit “Smokey Joe’s Café.” In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Knight published an autobiography, “Between Each Line of Pain and Glory” (a line taken from her million selling recording “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me”), in 1997, and the next year, she and The Pips were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. In 2004, Knight received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the annual BET Awards ceremony. A humanitarian and philanthropist, Knight has devoted to various worthy causes, including the American Diabetes Association – for which she is a national spokesperson, the American Cancer Society, the Minority AIDS Project, amFAR and Crisis Intervention, and The Boys and Girls Club. She has been honored by numerous organizations as well, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), B’Nai Brith, and is a recent recipient of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Today, Knight and husband William, along with various other members of the family, oversee her busy career from the Las Vegas headquarters of Shakeji, Inc., her personal entertainment corporation. She is a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, performer, restaurateur, and businesswoman with a spiritual outlook on her life. Her faith in God has been the driving force behind all of Knight’s endeavors, guiding her through her many successes.

Employing animation, video, and shadow-theater, this madcap adventure dips its toe into the genres of science fiction, film noir, and romantic comedy. CAST NATHANIEL BUCHSBAUM (Dancer) Manipulator of Light and Shadow, Student of the Ephemeral, Harnesser of Momentum, Walker of the Physical plane. Quick of tongue, slow of mind. When he isn't touring the Earth, delighting both young and old with his nimble, scantilyclad acts of physical storytelling, he is most likely dwelling in Brooklyn with his tall, striding friend Jake and his silverhaired pal Quincy. He is 61% water. He was assimilated by Pilobolus in 2012.
MISTRAL HAY (Dancer) first worked with Pilobolus in 2011, helping to break the world record for most people (26) to fit inside a Mini Cooper. Ever since, she has had the pleasure of working for Pilobolus Creative Services, and dancing in Shadowland, and Shadowland: The New Adventure, both in the US and abroad. She is based out of Brooklyn, New York, where she also works as an aerialist and a 500-hour certified yoga teacher.
KRYSTAL BUTLER (Dancer) began her training at Duke Ellington School of the Arts. She attended dance programs such as AAADT Summer Intensive, ADF, EMIA and Arke Danza. After graduating from LIU, she performed with the companies, INSPIRIT and Forces of Nature Dance Theater. In 2010, she joined Pilobolus. Krystal enjoys teaching and traveling. ARIANA NAKAMINE (Dancer) A Los Angeles native, Ariana has been able to call New York "home" for the past six years. She parted from the LA-based contemporary group collidEdance to study classical Modern Dance at Marymount Manhattan College in NYC. Shortly after receiving her BFA, she began working with Pilobolus Creative Services, and in 2014 became a cast member of Shadowland.
QUINCY ELLIS (Dancer) began training as a gymnast and figure skater in Maine before earning an Acting degree from Emerson College. He has been performing and teaching for the past ten years with companies such as The MoveShop, DeFunes Dance, and Theatre Raleigh. Outside of traditional theatre, Quincy also dance for a variety of NYC Drag Artists, including Juicy Liu and Miz Cracker. Quincy joined Pilobolus in 2017 and does not dye his hair grey...it grows that way. HEATHER FAVRETTO (Dance Captain) grew up in NJ and started dancing young. She loved it so much, she married it. Heather joined Pilobolus in 2010 and has been lucky enough to form incredible lifelong friendships while performing around the world. She enjoys making tacos, rocking out, and drinking sauvignon blanc. She has a BFA in dance from Rutgers University. She sincerely thanks her actual husband, Michael Gonzales, whose patience has allowed her to live her dream. 48
JUSTIN NORRIS (Dancer) was born and raised in Western Massachusetts and is a self-taught multimedia artist. At the age of seventeen he found his love for movement and dance while attending the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts High school. Justin was introduced to Pilobolus in 2007 and soon after began to teach and work with Pilobolus Creative Services. In 2009 he received the James Baldwin Scholarship to Hampshire College for visual art. Justin is a freelance visual creator, think tank and problem solver. JACOB MICHAEL WARREN (Dance Captain) hails from New York City, where he spends most of his time trying to decide if he’s a musician, an actor, or a dancer. When he’s not dancing with Pilobolus, he’s probably playing with his band the Harmonica Lewinskies, eating, or trying to prove that gravity is a myth. Thanks Mom & Dad for nurturing my furious and hyperactive creativity, rather than stifling it.
CREATIVE TEAM ITAMAR KUBOVY (Executive Producer) oversees the many moving parts of Pilobolus. After joining Pilobolus in 2004, he founded Pilobolus's acclaimed International Collaborators Project, a program that invites artists and thinkers from diverse fields to participate Pilobolus’s collaborative choreographic process. He also grew the business of Pilobolus Creative Services, collaborating with clients to develop custom movement and storytelling for film, advertising, publishing, and corporate events. Itamar was born in Israel and grew up in New Haven, where he studied philosophy at Yale. Prior to joining Pilobolus, he ran theaters in Germany and Sweden, directed plays by John Guare, co-directed the 2002 season finale of The West Wing, and made a film, Upheaval, starring Frances McDormand. RENÉE JAWORSKI (Co-Artistic Director) received her BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Upon graduating she began work with MOMIX, performing and teaching throughout the world as well as creating her own work in Philadelphia. She began performing with Pilobolus in 2000. Renée has served as choreographer and creator for exciting projects and collaborations such as the 79th Annual Academy Awards, the Grammy® nominated video for OKGo’s All is Not Lost, Radiolab Live: In the Dark, and has worked with myriad outside artists through the International Collaborator's Project. In 2010, her alma mater honored her with the University’s Silver Star Alumni Award for her work as an artist in the field of dance. Renée lives in Connecticut with her husband and daughter. MATT KENT (Co-Artistic Director) has worked with Pilobolus since 1996 as a dancer, collaborator, creative director, and choreographer. Past Pilobolus projects include Head Choreographer for Andre Heller’s Magnifico, a large-scale circus production; choreographer for a Sports Emmy-nominated teaser created in collaboration with the NFL network; and choreographer for a television appear-
ance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. His work for Pilobolus on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, co-directed by Teller and Aaron Posner, was nominated for Best Choreography by the L.A. Drama Critics Circle. Outside of Pilobolus, he has worked as zombie choreographer for AMC’s hit series “The Walking Dead”; as movement consultant on the Duncan Sheik musical, Whisper House; and created family and children’s performances with Rob Kapilow. Matt lives in Connecticut with his wife and two sons. STEVEN BANKS (Creative Collaborator) Emmy-nominated head writer of SpongeBob Squarepants. He wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed oneman play Home Entertainment Center which aired on Showtime and won L.A. Weekly, Drama-Logue and Bay Area Critic’s Circle Awards and is featured on HULU. He also created and starred in the national PBS series The Steven Banks Show. His Young Adult novel, King of the Creeps, was published by Knopf. His plays include Love Tapes (co-written with Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller) and New York productions of Looking at Christmas and American Love Sex Death. Film and TV credits include Mom, My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, The Aristocrats and The Jimmy Kimmel Show. He is currently creating a show for The Disney Channel. He attended Ringling Brother’s & Barnum and Bailey’s Clown College. DAVID POE (Composer) performed, composed and produced the music for Shadowland and Shadowland 2: The New Adventure. He has toured the world with the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Tori Amos, and his songs have been recorded by several other artists, including T-Bone Burnett, Curtis Stigers, Oh Land, Ana Moura, Thomas Dybdahl, Grace Kelly, the cast of Nashville, Grace Potter and Daryl Hall. David's work also appears in a variety of film and television projects. He has scored numerous films and was named a composer fellow of the Sundance Institute in 2009. ANDREA LAUER (Costume Design) is a costume/set designer and fashion stylist. Recent credits include Red Bull's School for Scandal at the Lucille Lortel, the German premier of Shadowland 2: The New Adventure by Pilobolus, and MEOW ROYALE in Tasmania, Australia. Her work has been seen on Broadway (American Idiot, Bring it On), around the country and internationally. Upcoming projects this fall are MEOW'S PANDEMONIUM with the London Philharmonic at the Royal Festival Hall, and The Blueprint Musicals, under the direction of Tom Ridgely, a site specific piece on the USS Intrepid as part of The Public's Under the Radar Festival where she will be doing sets and costumes. T I C K E T I N F O R M AT I O N The RiverCenter box office has tickets available for these series and events: TSYS Broadway on Broadway, Synovus Center Stage, RiverCenter ArtsReach and ArtsReach Matinees. Tickets also are available for programs presented by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, CSU Schwob School of Music, and various third-party presenters. The box office accepts cash, and all major credit cards: VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. TICKETS AT THE DOOR—Tickets to events that are not sold-out may be purchased at the box office beginning one hour before the start of the event. SEASON TICKETS—Season tickets may be purchased at the box office, by telephone (706) 256-3612 or with order forms in RiverCenter publications and mailings. MY SERIES PACKAGE—Tickets to RiverCenter events may be purchased at a 20% savings as a My Series Package. A My Series Package consists of at least one ticket to at least five events per patron. GIFT CERTIFICATES—Available year-round in any dollar amount at the RiverCenter box office.
CUSTOM COMBOS—Tickets to RiverCenter events may be purchased at a 10% savings as Custom Combos. A Custom Combo consists of at least one ticket to at least three events per patron. SINGLE TICKETS—Single tickets to individual RiverCenter events may be purchased without a service charge at the box office at the corner of Broadway and Tenth Street. For a service charge, tickets also may be purchased online at tickets.com, or rivercenter.org GROUP DISCOUNTS—Most RiverCenter events offer discounts on individual tickets sold to groups of 10 or more. For information call (706) 256-3612. SPECIAL DISCOUNTS—Patrons must come to the box office to take advantage of most special promotions and discounts with presentation of appropriate ID. Military, Public Service, Educator and Senior discounts are available on single ticket purchases to most events. Student Rush prices are available all day on the day-of-show at most events. Patrons using vouchers or gift certificates should note deadlines and restrictions that apply. No refunds are given for ticket price variances or special offers.
I M P O RTA N T I N F O R M AT I O N BOX OFFICE & PARKING BOX OFFICE—The box office at RiverCenter, located at the corner of Broadway and Tenth Street, is open Monday–Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It opens one hour before each performance and remains open through inter mission. The box office is not open on federal holidays unless there is an event that day. FREE PARKING—Parking is available in the parking garage directly in front of RiverCenter, 900 Broadway. Parking for those with disabilities is available in front of RiverCenter’s main entrance. The garage is managed by the City of Columbus, not RiverCenter. HOUSE RULES NO BABIES IN ARMS—Everyone attending a ticketed event, including all children regardless of age, must have a ticket.
BACKSTAGE AREAS RESTRICTED—For safety and security and out of respect for performers’ privacy, patrons are not given access to backstage areas before or after performances. HOUSE OPENING AND LATE ARRIVALS— RiverCenter’s Grand Lobby opens one hour prior to events and seating begins approximately 30 minutes before curtain. At the discretion of house management and in compliance with artists’ contractual agreements, latecomers will be seated at appropriate intervals during events. Latecomers may be seated near the entry doors out of courtesy to performers and other patrons. PROHIBITED EQUIPMENT—Please be courteous and turn off devices such as cell phones and pagers. Photography and recording is prohibited in the theatres. SMOKE-FREE POLICY—RiverCenter is a 75
smoke-free facility. Smoking is permitted in outdoor areas only. Thank you for your cooperation. I N C A S E O F E M E RG E N C Y FIRE NOTICE—Exits are indicated by red “exit” signs. S P E C I A L S E RV I C E S BAR SERVICE—Bar service is available in the Grand Lobby prior to the start and during intermissions of most RiverCenter events. Food and drink is not permitted in the theatres. COURTESY CUPS—Refillable Courtesy Cups will now be sold at RiverCenter concessions for $10 each. These cups will be allowed into Bill Heard Theatre during select RiverCenter performances. PRE-PURCHASE DRINKS—Pre-Purchase your drinks and other concession items before the show to maximize your intermission experience. Outside beverages are not permitted. ELEVATOR—A patron elevator is located between the entrances to Bill Heard Theatre and Studio Theatre. WHEELCHAIRS—Wheelchairs are available for patrons needing help getting to or from seating. Ushers will provide assistance.
LOST AND FOUND—Lost items should be given to an usher for storing with RiverCenter Security. These items are retained by Security for sixty days then donated to Valley Rescue Mission, Inc. Owners may claim lost items by calling (706) 256-3610. RIVERCENTER INC. & the Cultural Economy: Aside from providing great entertainment, performance space, and support services for several area arts organizations, RiverCenter plays an important role in our local economy. As calculated by the Americans for the Arts Economic Impact Calculator, based upon an annual budget of $3,292,506, RiverCenter activities result in more than $4.9 million in economic activity. This supports 165 full-time equivalent jobs, represents over $3.5 million in local household income and generates $480,400 in state and local government revenue. With the advent of RiverCenter becoming a location for originating touring productions, this impact will be broadened and become more stable. RIVERCENTER INC. & Tourism: RiverCenter supports conferences, meetings, productions, and other programs that attract tourists to our community for multiple days. Those visitors dine in area restaurants and support other retail businesses in the county during their visit. The entire local economy wins. Since our performing arts center attracts tourists to the city, stands as a symbol of high culture, improves the community’s quality of life, and aids businesses when attracting talent to the region, RiverCenter receives a subsidy from the hotel/motel tax. The revenue is derived from taxes paid by visitors staying in area hotels or motels located within Muscogee County. These funds are exclusively dedicated to the maintenance, utilities, and upgrades necessary to keep the facility competitive and attractive for the city. Area residents do not fund this tax but they reap the benefits of having their very own performing arts center in Columbus. RIVERCENTER INC. & the Next Generation: RiverCenter provides extensive educational programming, both in and outside of RiverCenter, for area K-12 public schools. Activities include teacher workshops, study aids, pre- and post-visit lesson plans, subsidized tickets and transportation to low income schools, and access to the arts for over 20,000 students. RIVERCENTER INC. & Facility Partners: Through significant in-kind contributions valued at over $175,000, RiverCenter supports the activities and performances of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus. Both are resident companies within the Center. ln addition, RiverCenter’s south wing is home to the Schwob School of Music. Through this collaboration both organizations serve the community in uniquely different ways that would ordinarily not be possible. This synergy brings the university and our nonprofit together to create vibrancy and variety in Uptown.
